what happened in the autumn of 1484 S.R?
Valandil
08-26-2005, 11:52 PM
Are you sure about that? I take it you mean "Fourth Age" since we don't have any year-by-year account of "First Age" - but the Fourth Age accounts don't go as far as 1484.
I suspect you mean "SR" - is that the case? :p ;)

Valandil
08-27-2005, 10:44 PM
Well - it was in the Fourth Age, but I wouldn't call it year 1484 of that age. Still - I see you've corrected it now, so I will guess:
Is that when Merry and Pippin saddled up their ponies and left the Shire for the last time, to make a visit to see Rohan and Gondor once more?

A book?
Spock
09-14-2005, 11:52 AM
One might as well say "everything". The answer must be the answer not a broad statement.
Rconsole
09-14-2005, 03:59 PM
Oh well I tried :p
Lotesse
09-14-2005, 04:01 PM
Yes, at least you tried; it's a friggin' tough question! Spock's questions are always tough. :)
Valandil
09-15-2005, 04:19 AM
I'm not sure (AT ALL - in fact, this is little more than a wild guess), but was it another source book for the information in LOTR - sorta like the Redbook of Westmarch?
Spock
09-15-2005, 07:14 AM
..you're getting warm Val. :)
Valandil
09-15-2005, 07:24 AM
Then was it a particular edition of the Redbook of Westmarch? Did it come from Great Smials or Brandy Hall or something?
Spock
09-15-2005, 11:12 AM
....sighs....no :(
rohirrim TR
09-16-2005, 10:05 AM

Spock

Yes, at least you tried; it's a friggin' tough question! Spock's questions are always tough. :)
Yes, Lotesse has the right attitude on this one. No one guessed it and so I'll post the answer in a trice.
Spock
09-16-2005, 10:44 AM
THE ANSWER:
Not many ancient documents were preserved in the Shire. At the end of the Third Age far the most notable survival was "Yellowskin" or the Year-book of the Tuckborough. Its earliest entries seem to have begun at least nine hundred years before Frodo's time. :D
Valandil
09-17-2005, 10:52 AM
What did the Shire Hobbits maintain began on 2 Yule, year 1422 of Shire Reckoning, rather than as others accounted it?
Curubethion

Remember my hints involving a pun...
FYI, we can't use Puns and expect people to know/find/remember, the answer. Answers are determined by 'what is in the books'. Perhaps you'd like to rephrase your question.

THANK you, Spock!! Yes, what Spock says here - please, be distinct with your questions, and then you may find you receive distinct answers. :)
Valandil
10-02-2005, 07:40 AM
Curubethion's question was clear... he just used a 'pun' for a hint, which seems acceptable to me.

Words have meanings. Lotesse gets it, I get it, and others get it. He said "hints involving a pun" so we have to go on the assumption that he meant a pun! Please let's not have a debate about meaning. :(
Lotesse
10-02-2005, 01:04 PM
Oh, nice. Ok...who is Gimli's 4th cousin 3 times removed? (does anyone know genealogical terms?...I don't know what it is exactly... :o )
Please use terminology that originates from the book; i.e., the wording from the text itself. ;) :) Then perhaps we'll be better equipped to provide you with an answer. I never DID know what "removed" meant, in reference to cousins and relations...

Technically, I still disagree with you and Spock on this. The appendices contain charts and other graphic information besides just written narrative text. I think it's OK to open this game to those other parts. :)

NO PUNS
Mr. Praline : But you told me it was Ipswitch!
Owner : (a bit meekly) It was a pun.
It's not a palindrome! The palindrome of "Bolton" would be "Notlob!" It don't work!!
Valandil
10-03-2005, 11:53 PM
But Curubethion's "pun" was a hint, not the question itself.
A hint is not even a requisite part of the question-answer format - it's a bonus.
So what's the big deal if someone tells you that their hint is a pun?
Calm down... :p
Spock
10-04-2005, 01:12 AM
But Curubethion's "pun" was a hint, not the question itself.
NO it wasn't. It involved a pun. NO PUNS. Questions straight forward and from the book. No inuendos, no puns, no vague references.
We the members HAVE Spoken

I hate to a picky ass, but I believe a palindrome is read the same way forewards as it is backwards. bolton vs notlob is simply bolton backwards. A palindrome would a word or numeric that is read the same foreward as it is backward. For instance, otto is a palindrome as it is the same word backward as it is foreward; the base pairs adenine guanine guanine adenine or agga is also a palindrome, as is ABBA, the swedish supergroup. I think Ill stop now.( incidentally, I like the abba song "SOS" which is , you guessed it, yet anothr palindrome)

This was a direct quote from MONTY PYTHON. If you read the post you'll see that it is said "it doesn't work". :(
