Well... I'll give you the first two parts: It's 'Taranon' and the meaning of Falastur is 'Lord of Coasts' (I'm guessing you're translating from Hebrew... does modern Hebrew still leave out the vowels, like old Hebrew did?)
Do you know the other part... the two things that Taranon Falastur was 'first' at? :)

And no, there's 'pointing' of hebrew vowel marks, so I guess I didn't remember it properly.

OK - first I'll give other interested parties three hours from this post to correctly answer the other two parts... and if nobody does, I'll give those other answers and award the question to you. :)
Valandil
03-15-2004, 06:12 PM
OK... the three hours have passed. King Taranon Falastur, 'Lord of Coasts' was the first of the Ship Kings, and the first childless King of Gondor.
Radagast the Brown: your turn! :)

Was it attacks of orcs & Easterlings at the same time that Rohan was under attack from the Dunlendings?

A group that came from the east and attacked Gondor, mostly in the 1800's of the Third Age I think (sorry Earniel... that was long before the 19th Steward... Gondor still had a King then! :) ). It's all in Appendix A in the part about Gondor.
Radagast The Brown

Oh - them. No, not them. And not the Nazgul in Minas Morgul either.

Well, there were Orcs coming from Moria and that is one of the reasons Beren gave the keys of Orthanc to Saruman. (Hey, there was lots of bad stufff happening around then).:)

Beren gave the keys because Rohan was in a bad situation after the war, IIRC.

How many older brothers did King Valandil have?
And why did he get to become king anyway, with older brothers?
Radagast The Brown
03-25-2004, 04:52 PM
3.
Because they were killed with Isildur in the Gladden Fields, by orcs, and Valandil was in Rivendell during the war against Sauron.

Cirdan, 'Twista' is not keeping up with his duties. ;) I checked, and your answer was incorrect. He had done that 9 years before in 1427. King Elessar actually did SEVERAL things in that 1436 visit. Do you - or anyone else - want to try again? :)

Yes! He gave him 'The Star of the Northern Dunedain' - and I think some of us have already debated whether that was an 'Elendilmir' (crown of Arnor) - or maybe one of those cool star thingees like the Grey Company wore! ;)
Your turn!

Now THAT'S a fun one: Every fourth year (with certain exceptions) they added a day called the over-lithe, after the lithe, which was mid-summer's day. Neither the lithe nor the over-lithe had a corresponding day of the week... which allowed them to keep their calendars in order, with every date always keeping the same week-day! :)

How old was the sceptre of Annuminas? (roughly)
brownjenkins
04-14-2004, 04:58 PM
really old :D
it came from numenor... and was the object of the royal line of the lords of andunie... so, by the end of the fourth age i believe it would have been in existance for close to two ages, or a bit less than 6000 years?
Radagast The Brown
04-15-2004, 06:50 AM
You mean by the end of the Third age?
If yes - you exaggerated a bit. :p 6000 is too old for this sceptre. :) Good try though.
brownjenkins
04-15-2004, 10:14 AM
yeah, end of third age... i thought the sceptre originated with lords of andunie of numenor... which split off around 550 SA
putting the sceptre at about 5900 by the end of the TA (to be more exact ;) )
but, i must have confused my royal artifacts (where's Val :) )

OK Raddy, you've had us stumped on this one for way too long, so I just looked it up. The note says it was 'already more than five thousand years old when Elrond surrendered it to Aragorn' so it doesn't give an exact age...
Radagast, do you want to ask another - since you got us all on that one? Or brownjenkins, do you want to - since you were in the ballpark? I'll give either of you at least 24 hours to get up the next question - and I'll post one if you haven't yet.

Indeed. Your go!
EDIT: Sorry as I am to say this, I appear to have counted wrong. The correct answer was actually 11, and so Valandil actually had it.
As Radagast has not posted, I could suggest Valandil do so, but whichever way works for you two, as the mistake is mine.
Sorry for the trouble. I really should know how to count.

No problem... I'll bet it was the slide that got you, not the counting! ;) Ooo... VERY tempted to make a very bad pun about your name and 'counting' - but I'll spare us all. :p
OK - sticking with the dwarves: of the thirteen dwarves who went on the quest for Erebor, only one is known to have been a father at the time. Which one was he? :)
Count Comfect
04-28-2004, 11:30 PM
Let's see - poor Thorin was childless, Fili and Kili were young... gah. *wills not to look up* Something in me wants to say Dwalin.
Btw- I just started counting from Thrain II instead of Thorin II. Doh. And thank you for your humourous forbearance.
Valandil

You're welcome - and like I said, no problem. :)
(my first two tries on the 'Hobbit Trivia' thread I asked TOTALLY bad questions... I was trying to go from memory - and I completely mis-remembered the first - and the second actually was told in FOTR instead of 'The Hobbit' - boy was I embarrassed!) :D
Not Dwalin though.

Gloin, father of Gimli is correct! And by 'known at the time' - I meant, from the appendices, known to have been a father at that time - not necessarily known from reading 'The Hobbit'. Gloin is the only one on the charts with any offspring shown - though some of the others might have had some as well - we're just not told about it.

You probably would have if I hadn't just double-checked that family tree last night when we were sorting out how many generations from Durin VI to Thorin II. :p
Sticking with those dwarves:
Which three dwarves in Thorin's company were descended from dwarves of Moria, but NOT from the royal line?

Feel neither - those three are correct. The footnote on the family tree tells us that - as well as telling us that Ori, Nori and Dori were related to Thorin - but not as near. Balin, Dwalin, Oin and Gloin are all shown on the family tree - along with Fili and Kili of course.

Well... you, brownjenkins and I have been batting this thread about, so I WAS going to let someone else in... but I think now I'll take a stab at it after all. It was something like:
"I have looked inside the doors of Moria. It waits for you still... Durin's Bane. Some great change (or power?) must come to the world before we dwarves can ever live in Moria again."

he developed severe Thalassophobia
1: fear of the ocean: a persistent, abnormal, and unwarranted fear of the sea or the ocean , despite the understanding by the phobic individual and reassurance by others that there is no danger. 2: fear of the ocean: a strong fear of, dislike of, or aversion to the sea or the ocean.
unable to continue his annual fishing trips with 'the mouth' to the sea of nurnen... the lack of 'me time' has been suspected to have contributed to his increasing disagreeable disposition as the ages wore on ;)

Anyhow, ole Fram thought it'd be quite funny to just send them a necklace of Scatha's teeth - you know, telling them that THIS treasure was quite hard to come by. The dwarves, now they didn't think it was all that funny - and they done him in.
