In which war were the last descendants of Castamir killed?
Telcontar_Dunedain
11-09-2004, 03:16 AM
Not sure what it's called if it has a name, but was it between Angmar and Arthedain?
Radagast The Brown
11-09-2004, 05:06 PM
It didn't have a name - but it's definitely not between Angmar and Arthedain. And I'm looking for the name of the King that ruled in this war, by the way...
matthew
11-13-2004, 04:39 PM
Wasn't it just a that gondorish civil war? And the king was Earnil or Earnur whatever (I can never keep them straight). I'm prob. not right, if I am, I won't be back in a while so you can go without me... ;)
Radagast The Brown
11-13-2004, 05:39 PM
No, not in the civil war. The civil were Castamir was alive - he was the reason for the war, wanted to rule Gondor. His supporters fled to Umbar, IIRC. His son(s) too.
I'm looking for his last descendant. :) He died in a war.
Valandil
11-22-2004, 02:00 PM
Rad - are you sure the war had a name? (I didn't look it up yet, just don't recall a name from memory)
Radagast The Brown
11-22-2004, 03:58 PM
I said it didn't have a name. :p I wanted the name of the King of Gondor, not the war, that in his days the last descendant of Castamir was killed.
Valandil
11-22-2004, 04:04 PM
I said it didn't have a name. :p I wanted the name of the King of Gondor, not the war, that in his days the last descendant of Castamir was killed.

In which war were the last descendants of Castamir killed?
You say 'in which war'... Silly boy! :p We'll have to get you for THAT one!   :D
Which KING then... I'll start by guessing Calimehtar! :)

Valandil
11-23-2004, 08:39 AM

On what date did the Entmoot begin??
I guess we could ask one of the admins... ;)
Maybe... June 14. And I was just thumbing through the tale of years thing earlier myself
Valandil
01-30-2005, 08:52 AM
Radagast would be fairly close - because I remember that Gandalf the White first met the threesome of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli on March 1, 3019 (TA) in Fangorn Forest (it was Aragorn's birthday - although he makes no mention of it in the text).
So I'll guess March 1, 3019 - as also the date for the start of Entmoot.
ItalianLegolas
01-30-2005, 09:44 AM
sorry, neither of those are right
The Wizard from Milan
01-30-2005, 11:23 AM
You could tell from the name of the sender. If it was a flower or jewel name then the sender is female. Also, if the name ended in an "a" then it was a male sender. If the name ended in "o" or "e" then it was a female sender.
But Frodo and Bilbo end in "o" and they are male
Twista
01-30-2005, 11:23 AM
I tryed looking it up...
all i could come up with is that it would fall between Feb 26th - March 2nd 3019.

Valandil
01-30-2005, 04:31 PM
But Frodo and Bilbo end in "o" and they are male
WfM - I think you have to read on in the part of the appendix about Hobbit names - where Tolkien explains how he translated some of them, and what they originally were. Keith K is talking about a portion that relates to this... see the 'On Translation' part of Appendix F - the last few pages of the appendices. :)
Twista
01-31-2005, 02:11 PM

Valandil
02-07-2005, 06:00 PM
He was 49 - but he came to Lorien then, not Rivendell (and he didn't exactly have "duties" in Mordor :p ;) )... and Arwen was there and they met for their second time - and pledged themselves to one another... and Galadriel had arrayed him in white so that he looked like an Elf Lord, or something. :)
ItalianLegolas
02-07-2005, 06:27 PM

"linnod"?? What's that?
Telcontar_Dunedain
02-22-2005, 03:45 AM
I'm not quite sure, but that's what it says Gilraen's words to Aragorn are.
It meant something like this: I gave Hope to the Dunedain, I have kept no hope for myself.
Telcontar_Dunedain
02-22-2005, 12:22 PM

Oooh, my tengwar is so incredibly rusty... :o Let's see.... it's starts with 'Tara' I think, and ends on 'aliem' but I can't figure out the middle symbol and I have no clue what it could be.

02-24-2005, 12:09 AM
DARN! I'm it? :p
OK then.... um ... how many incarnations of Durin the Deathless preceded Dain II Ironfoot?
Valandil
02-24-2005, 12:12 AM
OOoooo... good one.
Um... six?
Count Comfect
02-24-2005, 12:16 AM
Good one, but you got it anyway... :D
Valandil
02-24-2005, 12:30 AM
Good one, but you got it anyway... :D
Only thing that made me guess that... I recall someplace a tale (maybe told as one unconfirmed) that a later descendant of Dain did indeed return to Moria and re-established it - I believe he was the seventh Durin - and the one most previous to him was the one referred to in the Balrog's title "Durin's Bane" - so I figured that had to be the sixth. (EDIT: where is that though? Appendix A? UT? HoMe?? )
OK - me again...
King Ondoher of Gondor had two sons, yet neither ever became kings. What were their names?
(for 'bonus points' :p how far apart were they in age? and what was their sister's name? ;) )
EDIT - Oops! Forget the underlined part - that's UT, not appendix. :o
Count Comfect
02-24-2005, 12:58 AM
It's in one of the Appendices - there's a genealogy of the Dwarves, and it goes from Durin VI to Durin VII, via Dain... therefore, it must be Durin VI that was the last before Dain ;)
As to you question, I have no idea.
Telcontar_Dunedain
02-24-2005, 12:55 PM
Artamir and Faramir.

02-24-2005, 01:45 PM
Yes TD - you're correct: Artamir and Faramir.
FYI - their sister, Firiel, married Arvedui - whose father Araphant was King of Arthedain / Arnor. And, according to UT (to fill in all the gaps) they were 3 years apart in age.

Yes - great thread to revive! :p
2654?
Valandil
07-11-2005, 08:40 PM
We're apparently below LCOU's radar, so I'm going to invoke this thread's "Three Day Rule" so we can move it along.
Borin died in 2712 - he was great-grandfather to Oin, Gloin, Balin and Dwalin, and great-great-uncle to Thorin Oakenshield (as well as Dain Ironfoot, but by different nephews), according to the record at the end of Appendix A.
Rather than ask the next question now, I'll give someone else the opportunity. If nobody has asked by the next time I check back, I'll ask one myself. :)
Lotesse
07-11-2005, 11:03 PM
O.K., fine. I'll make a question, I think Chrys is summering for a while, haven't seen him recently. I'll re-start this thread gently, by putting out an easy one.
What Eldarin language did the High elven speak in LoTR, and what language did the Grey elven speak?
Lotesse

Come on, you guys, it's an easy one.

*psst - we usually give Raddy those spelling ones, since he's reading the books in a different language with a different alphabet!* :p

07-17-2005, 03:07 PM
OK - here's one:
The Elves had six days in their week - one each in honor of: the Stars, the Sun, the Moon, the Two Trees, the Heavens and the Powers - or Valar.
In honor of what did the Numenoreans add a seventh day to their own week?

What misled Frodo when he listened to the Elves of Lorien speak?
OK - did it have to do with the Elven language they used? Silvan instead of Sindarin or something?
Radagast The Brown
07-27-2005, 11:13 AM
OK - did it have to do with the Elven language they used? Silvan instead of Sindarin or something? They used Sindarin... and I can't say more since it's the answer. :)

08-06-2005, 06:35 PM
Radagast, may I ask for a teeny, tiny hint - something, anything. It's gotta have something to do with dialect, but I can't seem to be getting anywhere in my search...
Radagast The Brown
08-06-2005, 08:36 PM
Well... it's not in Appendices A,B or C if it helps. And I think the answer can also be found in Unfinished Tales...
Lotesse
08-06-2005, 08:39 PM
Thanx, Raddy! I shall keep on looking...
Lotesse
08-06-2005, 10:04 PM
a-HA!! Found it! The accent that the east-elves in Lorien had in their speaking of Sindarin; it was the accent that misled Frodo, as well as his own "limited acquaintance" with the language.
One of the reasons I love these trivia threads so much is that it really gives one an opportunity to constantly learn more and more about the beautiful intricacies of Tolkien's stories, of which I cannot seem to get enough of.
