Ask a trivia question about "The Fellowship of the Ring". Whoever answers correctly shall ask the next question.
What happens in "The Hall of Fire"?
GAME RULES
........All answers to questions must be found in Fellowship of the Ring. Please give the current "question asker' two days (48 hours) to tell players if any of the answers given are correct. The question "asker" should give a hint if neccessary (four wrong answers). Of course, as soon as the current question "asker" tells you that you have answered his/her question correctly, you may ask a new one................

There is always a fire, and the hall is usually a quiet place for peace and thought, but on some days you may hear songs and tales.
Lizra
01-02-2003, 02:20 PM
Yes Barrelrider, you are correct. :) I will have to work hard to challenge you! The days for many songs and tales were called "high days". :) The fire is always there, as you mentioned, but little other light! Sounds very nice! Gandalf said you could hear many songs and tales "if you can keep awake"! I give myself 20 minutes. :D

Thank you, Lizra. :) Where did the hobbits dwell prior to their settling of the Shire in Eriador?;)

Hmmmmm, how about "the upper vales of Anduin, between the eaves of Greenwood the Great and the Misty Mountains".

Where do you think one of my favorite descriptions occured?
.......Frodo stood near the open door and watched the white chalky path turn into a little river of milk and go bubbling away down into the valley........
(silly, I know, but I can't resist) :)

The house of Tom Bombadil:)
"They had not made any definite plans, but had vaguely thought of going down to Crickhollow together first, and resting there a bit."

Yes Cirdan, rainy days are wonderful in the house of Tom Bombadil!. Too bad Frodo couldn't have stayed a little longer.

Yeah, it always seemed they had to leave the nice places too soon. I love the descriptions of the little places like the row of stones on the path to the dell on Weathertop. The combination of weather, terrain, and phase of the moon can almost pinpoint the location since each was unique.

Boromir.
barrelrider110
01-03-2003, 05:09 PM
Well done, Falagar. Your turn to ask us a question.
Interesting to note that Boromir told Celeborn that he "lost" his horse at the ford, which gives us the impression that the horse drowned. However, when Aragorn and co. first meet Eomer, Eomer states that the horse that they lent Bormir came back riderless. I wonder how Boromir, no doubt a skilled rider (although less skilled than the Rohirrim) "lost" his mount?
Falagar
01-03-2003, 05:13 PM
Ok...
Who (except from Aragorn (?and the Hobbits) was the only one in the book to attack the Black Riders with fire?
(very stupid question, brain=empty, and too long time since I read LotR)
barrelrider110

Not entirely brain empty. I thought the question about Boromir's horse was quite challenging. :)

'What in the name of wonder?' began Merry, feeling the golden circlet that had slipped over one eye. Then he stopped, and a shadow came over his face, and he closed his eyes. 'Of course, I remember!' he said. 'The men of Carn Dûm came on us at night, and we were worsted. Ah! the spear in my heart!' He clutched at his breast. 'No! No!' he said, opening his eyes. 'What am I saying? I have been dreaming. Where did you get to, Frodo?'

Don't forget this question! Since I wouldn't know one from the other, I'll pass. There was that meeting with Gildor, but I have no ideas what kind of elvish he spoke??? Frodo was the elf friend, Sam knew some stuff he learned from bilbo. Someone! :)
Renille
01-13-2003, 11:27 PM
I'm pretty sure it was Gildor's elves. Frodo mentioned they were "High elves," wouldn't they speak Quenya rather than Sindarian? I know they mentioned Elbereth, something Grey elves wouldn't normally do. It was either them or Frodo, because,
"Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo, a star shines on the hour of our meeting," he added in the high-elven speech."
Or am I totally off?
Lizra
01-14-2003, 08:05 PM
So if you say "Elbereth", it's Quenya, which is the language of the high elves? Hmmmm, That word gets used alot! I say Frodo.
Yes...... he tells Sam, "These are High Elves! They spoke the name of Elbereth!"
(Waiting for radagast on both trivias!) :)

I think that's right...but wouldn't the elves still have had to sing their song first for Frodo to comment on it? So I still think it's the elves. :) But I am pretty sure the Elbereth-being-Quenya thing is right.
Lizra
01-15-2003, 11:30 PM
Yes, you're right. I thought the song was written in the common tongue (most of it is), but they do say Gilthoniel! O Elbereth twice! :) We shall have to wait for Melkor's significant othe(r???) :D
Melkor's significant othe
01-16-2003, 06:16 AM
In the plot of the book it's Gildor's Elves, but in the diction of the book it's Frodo. Either way you're correct, as Elbereth is High (Quenya) Eldarin.
Now someone else's turn to ask.....
Lizra
01-16-2003, 07:35 AM
Well! Thanks for clearing that up Mso, :D (cough, cough)....Renille, why don't you (and Radagast is up too) ask us a question.

Tokien says in The Letters that the song is in Sindarin. (Just to muddle things up a litte more.)

Oh damn, now I'm not so sure. Elbereth is also known as Varda in Aman - is this Valinorean - ie.Quenya ? Does anyone know someone on the moot who is a lanuguages guru - I'm not !
The answer I wanted though, was the one posted - at the meeting of Frodo,Sam & Pippin with Gildor's Elves....So come on somebody - ask a question......(Only from FOTR )

It was one night, they camped in the guardroom, Gandalf couldn't sleep and relieved Pippin from watch and he stayed there for 6 hours while the others slept, then he got them up and chose the direction...

OOH! Then I think I know what I'm doing! Starmoon is also called ithildin, and is only visible in starlight and moonlight. The company first meets this metal when they read the inscription which reflects the moon. It reads "The doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter." And underneath "small and faint" it is written:"I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs."
Am I right?

A jewel in the form of a butterfly I believe. It was a gift for Goldberry.
barrelrider110
01-20-2003, 05:19 PM
He chose for himself from the pile a brooch set with blue stones, many-shaded like flax-flowers or the wings of blue butterflies. He looked long at it, as if stirred by some memory, shaking his head, and saying at last: 'Here is a pretty toy for Tom and for his lady! Fair was she who long ago wore this on her shoulder. Goldberry shall wear it now, and we will not forget her!'

`The words are in the elven-tongue of the West of Middle-earth in the Elder Days,' answered Gandalf. 'But they do not say anything of importance to us. They say only: The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. And underneath small and faint is written: I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs.'
I believe Narvi made the doors, and Celebrimdor made the writing, but that's close enough.

Fingolfin! This is Fellowship of The Ring trivia only! :) (Read the first post in this thread) You may only ask a question, if you have answered a question correctly. (this happens in order also) It's a game with rules....Now, if you would like to start a trivia thread about the Silmarillion, I'm sure you'd find some players! Cheers!
Though Bilbo did give wonderful gifts, This person I'm thinking of is specifically called "a giver of gifts beyond the power of kings" in FoTR.

Celeborn is the gift giver.
Lizra
01-25-2003, 03:11 PM
Yea Cirdan! You are correct! I always associated Galadriel with the gifts, poor Celeborn doesn't get the recognition he deserves!
You ask next please.....

right GW. It was in the council when Elrond describes his role in the siege of Barad-Dur. (Gil-Galad's spear-boy).
Gwaimir Windgem

Gwaimir, I love looking in the book! You pick up so much, and see the wonderful dialog! I like to post a bit of extra info gleaned from the book with my answers, this way, a trivia game can help people learn, with the book having so much more cool stuff than the movie, and some members here might not have read the book yet. Elrond alludes to a silmarillion character before the fellowship leaves. What is the allusion, who is he speaking of, and how does it apply to the conversation taking place?

I believe Elrond is alluding to the sons of Fëanor when he and Gimli are having the following conversation:
`The further you go, the less easy will it be to withdraw; yet no oath or bond is laid on you to go further than you will. For you do not yet know the strength of your hearts, and you cannot foresee what each may meet upon the road.' [said Elrond]
`Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens,' said Gimli.
'Maybe,' said Elrond, `but let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.'
'Yet sworn word may strengthen quaking heart,' said Gimli.
`Or break it,' said Elrond.

Frodo get's a little weird there. Tom has made a mockery of the ring, by putting it on and not disappearing. Frodo gets whacky, and puts the ring on afterwards, to make sure it's still "his precious". Tom tells him, ......."Your hand's more fair without it!".......Poor Frodo!

My my, this thread has been busy lately.
I am sure that in Tom Bombadil's house was the first time Frodo wore the ring. If he had used it earlier, the ringwraiths would have found him.
Always back to Tom Bombadil... the enigma;"what a strange creature" as Elrond said. The ring had no power over him, and he apparently could see Frodo with the ring on.

I suppose you probably mean the various invocations, etc.? Like the hymn that Gildor Inglorion and co. sung, when Frodo invoked her and Luthien at the Ford, and any of numerous other invocations? Also, in a way, any time that the Phial of Galadriel was used could be thought of as an invocation of Elbereth, I think, as it held the light of the Star of Earendil, and Elbereth was 'star-queen'.
