Who said 'Go not to the Elves for counsel, for tey will say both no and yes'? (it looks hard, so a hint - it's in the first book in FotR)

I think Frodo said that to Gildor... seems like he was quoting it as sort of a 'general saying'...?:)

Radagast The Brown
12-04-2003, 05:24 PM
Yup. :) Your turn.

Strider?

Bacchus
12-06-2003, 12:31 PM
I'm afraid not :(

Valandil
12-06-2003, 12:45 PM
Oh wait! It WAS an elf... and I remember the context now. It was when Bilbo recited his poem at the room with the big fire in Rivendell... and asked the Elves to say which parts were his and which were contributed by Aragorn...

I sure don't remember that particular elf's name though - unless it was just 'one of the group' there or something...

Bacchus
12-06-2003, 03:23 PM
You've identified the scene, and the elf is indeed named a couple of times.:D

Radagast The Brown
12-06-2003, 03:52 PM
Lindir? (IIRC. Read it a few days ago)

Bacchus
12-06-2003, 04:03 PM

Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow
His jacket is blue and his boots are yellow

Radagast The Brown
12-06-2003, 04:53 PM
Correct.

Bacchus
12-06-2003, 05:08 PM
How did Balin die?

brownjenkins
12-06-2003, 07:11 PM

The Gaffer
12-08-2003, 01:25 PM

Radagast The Brown
01-04-2004, 05:11 PM
okj - here's a question - how many days did Glorfindel looked for Frodo and the hobbits, from the day he left Rivendell to the day he found them with Aragorn?

Elvengirl
01-04-2004, 06:51 PM
nine days

Radagast The Brown
01-05-2004, 07:35 AM

Elvengirl
01-05-2004, 09:29 AM
When Gandalf first went into Moria, who was he looking for?

Valandil
01-05-2004, 09:38 AM

Elvengirl
01-05-2004, 02:14 PM
yes 'twas Thrain :)

matthew
01-05-2004, 02:48 PM

Alas, i cant find the quotation.
Its not in the council of elrond, nor is it mentioned in the tale of years.

THEY COULDNT SEE THERE OWN REFLECTION ALTHOUGH THEY COULD SEE EVERYTHING ELSE

matthew
01-10-2004, 02:25 PM
sorry about that last post. i just realised i was looking at page 1 when i wrote it, so it bounced back to here, and no, I do NOT think that Gandalf was looking for boromir in moria.

During their journey out of the Shire?

Yes...but be more specific! :)

Radagast The Brown
01-21-2004, 07:48 AM

Maybe Lizra wants the zip code.

Lizra
01-21-2004, 02:53 PM
Har har! ;) Ok, what interesting thing happened right before they had that little meal in the tree?

I will give Durin 1 the chance for the next question though...very good!

The Gaffer
01-21-2004, 04:27 PM
Was the fox quite right about something he never found out any more about?

Lizra
01-21-2004, 05:59 PM
Yes, but something very unusual happened between meals at this point, a peek at troubles to come.....

Durin1
01-22-2004, 06:49 AM
Methinks that a Black Rider came round the corner of the road and stopped near where the hobbits lay hid. It was actually only Frodo who initially got in the tree with Sam by him, if i remember rightly.

Lizra
01-22-2004, 07:51 AM
The tree meal was preceded by the first sighting of a sniffing Black Rider. After he passed, the hobbits kept "a stones throw to the left of the road" and as the sun went down, they came upon the huge hollow tree, still alive at the edges. The hobbits entered by a "great crack" on the side of the tree opposite the road, and sat "upon a floor of old leaves and decayed wood", eating their meal.
Your turn Durin! :)

Durin1
01-22-2004, 09:48 AM
A very easy one...

What was the place just before the Falls of Rauros that the fellowship come across and what was unique about it?

Radagast The Brown
01-22-2004, 03:53 PM
Tol Brandir? (people says no one has ever walked there)

Durin1
01-23-2004, 04:26 AM
Correct, couldn't really think of a difficult one:)

Radagast The Brown
01-23-2004, 06:37 AM

The Gaffer
01-23-2004, 08:39 AM

Radagast The Brown
01-23-2004, 10:45 AM
Yes.

The Gaffer
01-23-2004, 01:55 PM
Why shouldn't you go to the elves for advice?

Aromen

Falagar
01-24-2004, 02:17 PM
The problem with entering a trivia you haven't followed.

I'll try to make a new one then (hope this hasn't already been asked): how many days did Boromir's 'trip' to Rivendell take?

Radagast The Brown
01-24-2004, 02:22 PM
110?

Falagar
01-24-2004, 02:28 PM

I think that the ann thennath was the type of verse structure used in Sindarin. I believe that Aragorn describes his chant of the Lay of Leithian as being of this type of verse.

Cirdan
01-28-2004, 11:33 AM
correct

Durin1
01-30-2004, 05:29 AM

Lizra
01-30-2004, 12:06 PM

Oh my! You know how a lot of farther/son names rhyme or sound similar? Well the first thing that came to mind was Lard! What a horrible name that would be. I really hope there's no one named Lard. I mean, Groin is bad enough, but at least it's pronounced different...

Radagast The Brown
02-09-2004, 08:55 AM
The answer is not Brand or Lard. Keep guessing! :)

Radagast The Brown

The Gaffer

Thanks to RTB for reminding me to come back here!

The long expected question:

Why were the Hobbits physically uncomfortable after being freed from the barrow wight?

barrelrider110
03-03-2004, 02:22 PM
They were wearing strange garments.

Nurvingiel
03-03-2004, 02:51 PM
You're on the right track. I'm not referring to immediately after, but a short while after.

barrelrider110
03-03-2004, 03:09 PM
aha! they lost the clothes they were wearing, so they had to put on heavier stuff and they were uncomfortable 'cause the weather was warm.

Nurvingiel

Radagast The Brown
03-04-2004, 12:38 PM

Cirdan

Twista

Radagast The Brown
03-14-2004, 11:08 AM
Yes, they did, but the battle was not on the lands of the Shire. I'm looking for a battle on the lands of the Shire.

Making a rather belated contribution to this thread:) :

To the defence of RTB, during the Council of Elrond chapter of FoTR, Elrond states his lineage as coming partly from Earendil who is his "sire", surely this means that hs lineage through Elwing would also be relevant?

Radagast The Brown

Yes, it's in the council. Elrond says he's Earendils's son, son of Elwing, daughter of Dior son of Luthien.

Moon letters were written by what?

THE ANSWER..to forgo my victory dance and further hostilities amongst members.

Moon-letters were written with silver pens. The substance ithildin, made from mithril, reflected only starlight and moonlight, and it seems likely that ithildin, or something very similar, was used by the Dwarves to write their moon-letters.

...Encylopedia of Arda...

Ultimatejoe
05-13-2004, 10:11 PM
Look, I know this is a friendly place, but I'd stow the ego, and fast buddy.

The Encyclopedia of Arda contains a lot of information that is conjectural or plain hypocryphal, and your dependence on it bellies what YOU understand.

Oh, and that was nice that you copied the text from that page word for word. Surely someone as gifted as yourself is capable of writing their own answer.

As for the substance of your answer: there are certain dubieties of the english language that do in fact make the answer less "logical and literal" than you may seem. Does a sculptor make a statue, or does the chisel? The uncertainty in answering that question stems from the subjective interpretation of the question. In the case of your question, the word "what" does not exclude the possibility of a person being the answer, as I'm sure someone as smart as you is well aware. Now, your answer is right, but it is by no mean the exclusive answer. On top of that, the fact remains that a tool does nothing without a guiding influence of some sort. While a car propels people from one place to another, a car doesn't drive, a person does. In the same way, the pen you refer to may have performed the interactions that resulted in moon letters, but these were guided by the hands of the dwarves. Your subjective interpretation of the question is, in my humble opinion, a rather poor one when considering this; even if it is not entirely inaccurate.

No takers? Ok, here's the list:

Elrond, Arwen, Galadriel, Elladan and Elrohir, Theoden, Eowyn, Theodred, Eomer, and Celeborn.

I'm not including his son. He is also potentially related to just about every major player in the story so I won't include them. Just the confirmable cases. Here's a less insane question:

How many "drownings" are referred to in the books? (Incidents, not numbers of people.)

I was GONNA just say 'everyone', but couldn't quite work it out with Gimli and Frodo. :p And are you SURE about Galadriel and Celeborn (whose child WAS he, anyway?) before the marriage? I guess it depends how distant you want to go, huh? After all - he and Arwen were probably like 1st cousins, 64 times removed or some such. ;)

Refresh me on his relations with the Rohirrim though... are you talking way back to the First Age Edain ancestors... or was there someone more recent I'm forgetting?

Celeborn through marriage (he was the son of a Sindar Elf, and was a member of Elu Thingol's court.) Galadriel is related as she is Turgon's first cousin. Turgon's daughter married Earendil and begat Elrond and Elros.
