OK...new question time! Hmmm...
What large birds did they see, as they were cruising down the great river? (I hope I haven't asked that already! ) :)
wahine
07-09-2003, 10:06 AM
There seemed no sign of living moving things, save birds. Of these there were many: small fowl whistling and piping in the reeds, but they were seldom seen. Once or twice the travellers heard the rush and whine of swan-wings, and looking up they saw a great phalanx streaming along the sky.
Strider goes onto say they were Black Swans.
Am I correct or are you talking about something else?
Also, if that's correct I like the hint you gave in the question.
Lizra
07-09-2003, 10:25 AM
Dang! That was fast...and correct! :) What a beautiful sight that must have been! I see wild cranes, geese, and ducks....but never swans!
Your question Wahine.

I live near the Chesapeake Bay. The are so many swans that the Dept. of the Environment is going to kill some (apparently they eat all the water grasses).:(

Beneath an old grey hill.

Correct.
I was referring to the song Frodo sang in Bree, at the Prancing Pony.
Your turn, Diamond.

Radagast The Brown
07-21-2003, 12:15 PM
Well, I wasn't sure (I tried to look for that in the book, but didn't find it), and I decided to guess anyway. :p
Saruman described Radagast in three different adjectives. Itemize them. (I'm not sure 'itemize' is the right word..)

"List" is probably a more precise term for what you're asking. (Just FYI:) )

Saruman said it during his conversation with Gandalf in the movie. I could have sworn that this conversation took place in the book, but I can't find it. Here's what Saruman says:' "You need not speak to me as to one of the fools that you take for friends," said he. "I have not brought you hither to be instructed by you, but to give you a choice."
I think hectorberlioz and I have confused the book and the movie, which is one of the downsides of watching a movie adapted from a book.
I withdraw my answer.
Radagast The Brown
07-24-2003, 09:19 AM
It can be or Saruman or Gandalf. I would say Saruman.
Cirdan
07-24-2003, 10:14 AM
I think the quote from the movie was extracted from the appendix where the events between the hobbit and the beginning of LotR are described.

It's not in the appendices either, and it doesn't appear whenever Gandalf had conversation with Saruman in the rest of the volumes, either. I think it was a contrivance of Jackson's. I propose dismissing the question and moving on.

The quote I was thinking of is, "I wonder a little that you should play with your toys of fire and smoke, while others are in earnest speech." in reference to Saruman's annoyance with Gandalf's smoking. (from Unfinished Tales)

Nanduhirion means "Valley of the dark streams" in Sindarin....it is the Dimrall Dale in Westron....and Azanulbizar in Khuzdul. This is the valley outside the gates of Moria , it contains the Mirrormere, and is the source of the Silverlode.

I have seen some right and some wrong answers. Let me clarify the question. Three of the names are not hobbit names. List those three and you get the answer right. If any of the three are wrong, I'll list the answer as wrong so as not to give anyone an advantage. After I get the correct answer I'll give you a run down on who everyone is. Thanks for playing:)

Thistlewood, Rushlight and Appledore are names of big folk in Bree. They are "rather botatincal" for hobbit names.
Banks, Brockhouse, Sandheaver and Tunnelly are names of little folk in Bree.
Grubbs, Burrows and Goodbodies are from the Shire and were at Bilbo's party.
Thanks for playing:)

Valandil
10-08-2003, 12:25 PM
Yes - I'll take that.
I was thinking of where Frodo admits that he thought a servant of the enemy would seem fairer and feel fouler. Aragorn laughs and remarks that he therefore must "feel fair and look foul"
Had to check the chapter though - and found two prior places where Aragorn laughs as he says something: first when replying to Sam's statement to the effect that perhaps he has good reason for spying and eavesdropping - and should perhaps explain it to them - and the second when he gives a "queer laugh" saying that it would be nice to be taken in for what he is.
Alqualaure - your question?
Alqualaure

Holy moly! I didn't actually consider I would be correct - just sort of tossed that one out there! LOL! :D

King of Lorien?
Alqualaure
10-10-2003, 12:30 PM
Hmmm...
Okay, I'm technically not sure on this one! LOL I think you are correct, Radagast - but there's a sort of "technicality"... perhaps others can pitch in to confirm this for us?
I was going for "the lover of Nimrodel". However...
Of old he was an Elven-king,
A lord of tree and glen,
When golden were the boughs in spring
In fair Lothlorien.
SO... does this mean he was a king of Lorien? Or is it that he was a king "when golden were the boughs in spring in fair Lothlorien"??? I was under the impression that only Galadriel and Celeborn ruled Lorien... See what I mean?
Help!?! :D
PS! - Sorry this reply took so long folks - I had a pile of work yesterday!
PPS! - I guess I've thrown the answer at any rate... regardless of the "technicality", I think it's your go, Radagast!
Radagast The Brown
10-10-2003, 04:35 PM
It's from UT: 'The History of Galadriel and Celeborn and Amroth king of Lorien' - in the forth chapter in the second age.
I don't have a very good question, so... When (month) did the fellowship left Rivendell?
Valandil
10-10-2003, 04:48 PM
Fellowship left Rivendell on December 25th! (3018)
And... Alqualaure, here's something perhaps of interest. Amroth ruled Lorien until - oh I think about 1981 - just after the Balrog appeared in nearby Moria. There was a general flight from the area - which is why Amroth and Nimrodel left, intending to take their west-bound ship trip.
It was after this that Celeborn and Galadriel were invited in to reign in Lorien (experts: if I'm off, help me here - this is from foggy memory). However, I THINK there may be something in UT about them being in Lorien in the Second Age...??? JRRT changed his mind about some historical events and never worked it all out to perfection - but why should he have - it's all fictitious history anyway!:D
Sorry if that last statement shocked  anyone...

However, I THINK there may be something in UT about them being in Lorien in the Second Age...??? JRRT changed his mind about some historical events and never worked it all out to perfection - but why should he have - it's all fictitious history anyway!:D
Sorry if that last statement shocked  anyone... You're right. (and if you looked in the appendixes - it's not fair. I suspect so because there was no specific date in FOTR)
Anyway you're right abuot UT. But therer are many versions in UT... the story in UT, is, btw, the shortened.
Valandil
10-10-2003, 05:13 PM
I didn't look - but probably remembered it from the appendices. It IS a memorable date after all.
Sorry... I'll have to get back later with a question. Oh wait... holiday weekend, about to leave work, mom's coming up for my birthday and baby's birthday... calls for an easy one:
What color is associated with Rhadagast?

Radagast The Brown

Alqualaure
10-15-2003, 11:30 AM

Concerning Aragorn...
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken:
The crownless again shall be king.
Who composed theses verses?

The Gaffer

According to Bilbo, when did he arrive in Esgaroth?
Radagast The Brown
10-22-2003, 04:42 PM
You mean, in the Erebor journey, or the one after his 111 birthday?
Valandil
10-22-2003, 05:15 PM
*thinking how to answer without like totally giving it away to the brown one with the book:p *
Well, Bilbo is speaking and makes the statement. Not sure if he does it twice. If so, give both answers - if one's right, it's yours.:)
The Gaffer
10-23-2003, 04:44 AM
On his birthday :D

Valandil
10-23-2003, 09:33 AM
Yes - you have the con!
(note: I had mistakenly asked that in Hobbit trivia - we don't actually get the info until FOTR... shame on me! shouldn't rely too much on my foggy memory - esp with the asking!)
Radagast The Brown
10-23-2003, 11:45 AM
To which house did Gildor Inglorion belong?

After the death of his parents, where did Frodo live before Bilbo took him in?
Radagast The Brown
10-23-2003, 02:31 PM
In Brendy Hall?
Earniel
10-23-2003, 03:16 PM

Radagast The Brown
10-23-2003, 04:40 PM

What was something that Sam always carried with him?
Turambar1982
10-25-2003, 07:40 AM
his cooking gear:)
Lizra
10-25-2003, 09:41 AM
YEs....but this answer can get even more specific....if you wish! ;) The thing I'm thinking of was something he always replinished, whenever he could. (huge hint....)
Cirdan
10-25-2003, 11:15 AM
salt
Lizra
10-25-2003, 01:34 PM
Yes! That's the exact answer I was looking for. Salt, the magic flavor enhancer....followed closely by sugar! :) Cirdan or Turambar 1982 may ask the next question, whichever one would rather ask, since you both were right!
Cirdan
10-25-2003, 02:03 PM
Coneys w/o salt would not taste very good.
Who did Frodo speak with at length at the feast in the Last Homely House east of the sea?
The Gaffer
10-25-2003, 02:09 PM
That would be Gloin.
Cirdan
10-25-2003, 02:28 PM

The Gaffer
10-25-2003, 03:14 PM
Okey doke.
So how did Gandalf close the door in the Chamber of Mazarbul?
Keith K
10-25-2003, 10:42 PM
with a wizard spell?
The Gaffer
10-26-2003, 07:33 AM
I think we need to be a bit more specific than that...
Turambar1982
10-26-2003, 01:45 PM
he held the door shut with a spell and after the balrog"fought" with him the ceiling came down
The Gaffer
10-27-2003, 05:40 AM
Sorry for the hiatus..
OK, you're right so far, but after the balrog seized the door, used a counter-spell and the door started to open, how did Gandalf stop it?
Radagast The Brown
10-27-2003, 08:05 AM
He cause a collapse of the cieling and blocked it. Really, how do you suppose we should know that? Tolkien didn't note that.
The Gaffer
10-27-2003, 10:54 AM
Er...well it's in my copy
Radagast The Brown
10-27-2003, 02:35 PM
Where? Is it in 'The Bridge of Khazad Dum', or another chapter?
The Gaffer
10-27-2003, 04:40 PM
Oooh, you're cheating!! ;)
Well, I presume that I've expressed myself VERY poorly in this question, since the answer is in black and white in the Bridge chapter.
Gandalf says that he had to speak the "word of Command".
Sorry about that (or maybe I defeated the triviasters). Anyway, here's another question:
What kind of (walking?) tree don't you get in the Northfarthing?
Radagast The Brown
10-27-2003, 05:01 PM
Oooooh! no! I found it now. not fair. I th9ught it's in another part of the chapter.
LutraMage
10-27-2003, 05:44 PM
You don't get elm trees (walking or otherwise) :p !
The Gaffer
10-27-2003, 05:50 PM

LutraMage
10-27-2003, 05:57 PM
Thanks TG.
Okay, it's been a long time since I posted a trivia question, and I notice that RtB is still on the prowl for new questions, so how's this? What happened immediately after Menelvagor appeared?
The Gaffer
10-27-2003, 06:05 PM

Is it something like:
"One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them,
One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them"...??
* pops out of the darkness and shakes Valandil's hand*
Nice job :D Your turn
Valandil

Gandalf?
Turambar1982
11-02-2003, 11:21 AM
Gildor???
Uh? Gildor? and that would be? Uh I'm lost! What are you poeple talking about? Oh wait now I remember. Boy I'm getting behind. Gildor's elves did tell Sam not to leave Frodo but it wasn't Gildor himself. :D Uh, I hate cracking on people but Uh next time you need to be more specific, cassiopeia
:D
cassiopeia
11-02-2003, 08:19 PM
I don't believe I need to be more specific. The question is quite clear. Somebody or a group of somebodies told Sam not to leave him. Quite simple. From memory nobody else told Sam that in the FOTR. It was meant to be a bit of a trick question because in the movies Gandalf told Sam not to leave him.
Anyway, if was the elves, not sure if it was Gildor himself (the text only says elves), so I suppose Amea got it. :)
I'm sorry cassiopeia it was wrong of me to try to correct you. I hope you except my apologies.

No problem. I thought the question was perfectly clear, but you are free to disagree if you wish. :) Are you going to ask a question?
Alright as long as were're on speaking terms: Who sang the fall of Gilglade to the Hobbits? :D
Radagast The Brown
11-04-2003, 01:59 PM
You mean, Gilgalad?
Sam?? (or Aragorn... my guess is still Sam.)

It was............. Merry Brandybuck!
Rosie Gamgee
11-05-2003, 03:52 PM
'R you sure it wasn't Pip? I just read that part and can't believe I can't remember. I love what Frodo says after: "Short cuts make long delays, but inns make longer ones." :D
The Dunedain
11-05-2003, 04:32 PM
I think, they both say it. Merry to Strider and Pippin to Frodo.
brownjenkins
11-05-2003, 04:53 PM
i think pip does say it first when frodo decides to cut through the woods instead of taking the road... then frodo says it later with the "inn" part, in a reply to pip wanting to stop at the golden perch on the way to crickhollow
Turambar1982
11-06-2003, 10:44 AM
just looked it up. it was definitly pip.

sorry to interupt, but i just want to try something. You see, my friend and I had a bet to see if a lot of die-hard-LotR fans knew the answere to my question. She didn't know the answer and said that I might be the ONLY one and I told her that a lot of BIG LotR fans knew...here it is:
What is the real power/purpose of the three Elven rings of power?
The Gaffer
12-01-2003, 08:57 AM
Er.. it was something like healing, preservation and inspiration. If you do a search on Vilya, Narya and/or Nenya I'm sure you'll find the definitive answer.
