I did think of Amroth and Nimrodel; but I forgot whether or not it was mentioned in FotR.

Amroth's death is mentioned in hte Lay of Nimrodel, which Legolas sings a part of as he crosses that river. Still missing one though.

I'll give you guys a big clue. It's in the appendices.

Radagast The Brown

Numenore?

Spock
05-18-2004, 02:46 PM
UJ- you missed the rules of the thread; posted ages ago.

No appendix questions. The question has to come from the storyline itself.;)

There is a thread for trivia based upon appendixes, so you might want to join that.

Ultimatejoe

Seriously? Then I'll give it to Radagast. I was thinking about Barahir's death off the icy coasts of Forochel.

Radagast The Brown
05-18-2004, 02:57 PM
Wasn't it Arvedui? I thought about him too, but he wasn't in FotR, so...

Is it my turn then?

Lizra

Well...It was a great effort at stumping us! :D Thank you anyways! I like them (sort of  ) hard! :)

Edit - wrong trivia. :o :p
New question coming...

What was given to Merry and Pippin by Galadriel when they left Lorien?

Ultimatejoe

Dammit, it was Arvedui. I'm really firing on all cylinders today.

Spock

Wow, I didn't last long with that one but at least it was answered by my long time cyber friend.

Your go.

Things here going box by box. You don't realize how much "stuff" you accumulate until you move and then have to unpack it all. I've got more stuff under plastic outside awaiting the delivery and set up of a storage shed next week. More goodies should be found then.
But I've got my Map of Middle Earth, from '70, framed and hanging in my office so I'm doing well.

About the question, here it comes:
How many wardens guarded the bottom of the huge tree where Galadriel and Celeborn dwell, when the fellowship arrived there?

AntiXZer01
07-02-2004, 02:11 PM
There were 3 and they were tall, clad in grey mail and long white cloaks.

I'm a little busy and cant think of a good question so here is a nice easy one;

What are five different names of Gandalf!?(excluding the name Gandalf!)

Last Child of Ungoliant
07-02-2004, 02:41 PM
mithrandir
tharkun
olorin
lathspell
stormcrow
g the white
g the grey
g greyhame

in the above 'g' stands for gandalf

Radagast The Brown
07-02-2004, 03:42 PM
I have two comments:
1. You're right, AntiXZer... but you suppose to wait for the question asker to say so, before asking a new question.
2. I don't think you can 5 names for Gandalf in FotR... Tharkun, Olorin, Lathspell, Stormcrow, Gandalf the White, Gandalf Greyhame... are all from TTT and RotK.

In the interests of accuracy I should point out that the black riders were seen in Bree before the four hobbits arrived (although it doesn't technically state that they were riding at the time! :) ) The passage I refer to is when Barliman is talking to Frodo up in his room.

"These black men," said the landlord lowering his voice. "They're looking for Baggins, and if they mean well then I'm a hobbit. It was Monday, and all the dogs were yammering and the geese screaming. Uncanny, I called it. Nob, he came and told me that two black men were at the door asking for a hobbit called Baggins.' Nob's hair was all stood on end. I bid the black fellows be off, and slammed the door on them."

What do you think?? I think it was Nob and Barliman who saw the riders in Bree first. :) :)

I think Spock was speaking of when they were seen prior to the company of Hobbits (and aragorn) leaving for Rivendell. :)

The correct reply was given and the circumstances surrounding it's phrasing were correct. I specifically asked for the two characters and in only the passage where Nob & Merry run into the Hobbits room at the inn, are two characters mentioned in the same passage. Barliman only "heard it" from Nob. As questioner, the decision of correctness stands.:D

now give me a few more hours to think up a good question..again.:p

Spock - as the questioner I agree that your decision stands - however in my defense I must point out that Barliman did not hear it from Nob - he bid the riders be off and slammed the door in their face. :)

I'm not being churlish - I am just being accurate. Enough, however, on that subject. I will try really hard to answer another question correctly!!

Anyone who can use that adjective correctly deserves futher response.!

Perhaps it would have been more clear or as the public schools say "more better" if I had phrased it *two characters reported to Frodo*. However, water has gone down the Bryandywine and I await another correct response.

Spoken by Pippin in A Shortcut to Mushrooms FotR, Chapter IV
'I know these fields and this gate!' he said. 'This is Bamfurlong, old Farmer Maggot's land. That's his farm away there in the trees.'

Spock
07-07-2004, 12:49 PM
....sighs.....

Yes he does say that in chapter 4 but that was always taken by me as the name of his farm not the location.

In chapter 5 it states "....Hobbits have a passion for mushrooms.....which explains young Frodo's long expeditions to the renowned fields of the Marish."

I'm always having problems because I try to be very precise but so far very few here get the answers I seek. I guess "the ring" has clouded my judgement.:D

So I give up and you can go now L.C.O.U.;)

I'm so excited - I'm trying to come up with a question that requires a bit of thinking, so here goes.....

How many of the Nazgul were sighted in Eriador the night the four hobbits slept in Bree and where were they sighted?

The answer must be based on actual sightings by characters in the Fellowship of the Ring and not on speculation or hypothesis by characters in the book. :D

Radagast The Brown
07-09-2004, 05:47 AM
I think it would be one, seen by Merry in Bree. Others saw them in Buckland, not the Fellowship though. Maybe Aragorn saw some as well? But he doesn't say anything about it...

I thought I already posted a reply here!! so if another one turns up, please ignore it!! :)

No, Radagast, I'm sorry, but that answer is incorrect, however, you are on the right track!!

My question didn't ask who of the Fellowship saw the Nazgul, just what were the positive sightings by characters in the book.

And you are right about Aragorn. He does see some in Bree, but not on the evening that the hobbits stayed there. He saw them previous to this.

Good work so far!! :D

I'm sorry, Radagast, I seem to be confusing you everytime I post a reply. You were on the right track but just need to add the two sightings together. :)

The night the four hobbits stayed in Bree, the Nazgul were sighted in Eriador in two locations - as you have already determined in your earlier post. :)

How many were seen at each location?? Add them together and, hey presto, you will have the correct answer!! :D Please try again as I am sure you will get it right next time!!

Elanor you give me hope. Next time I won't let them beat me into submission so easily. RTB will get it he has a problem with this type of detailed question (no offense Rad.:) )

The Night Court (a US tv sitcom) has the father of the leading character in a mental institution for some years. When he reunites with his son he says: "I used to write my name in cheese whiz, but I'm MUCH better now". The character is played by John Astin who played Gomez in The Adams Family.

Keep 'em guessing El.

You are correct, Radagast. :)

The night the hobbits were in Bree, one Nazgul was sighted by Merry and Nob in the streets of Bree. On this same night, three Nazgul were sighted in Buckland by Freddy Bolger when they invaded the house in Crickhollow.

Sorry, Spock, that is not correct. Certainly the Nazgul were sighted on the Monday, however, that was not the night the hobbits spent in Bree, but earlier in the week. It was a good attempt though!! :) Radagast eventually calculated the correct answer. :)

What was t he Hundred Weight Feast?

Elanor the Fair

The party held by Frodo in honour of Bilbo's hundred and twelfth birthday, the year after Bilbo departed from the Shire.

Radagast The Brown

On a path in the Shire, Merry saw Bilbo putting the ring when the Sackville Baggins's came towards him. I don't tihnk the specific place is written/.

Yes, that is correct, Radagast. The place is not written, however, the time is - a year before Bilbo's 111th birthday party.

You may have a turn!! :D

Erkenbrand Of Rohan
07-18-2004, 09:14 PM
Who sang part of the song 'The Fall of Gil-galad'?

Gil-gal was an Elven-King,
Of him the harpers sadly sing;
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's filed
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.

When the Fellowship arrived at Caras Galadon, what was the challenge and the reply before they could ascend the trees?

Radagast The Brown
08-07-2004, 07:13 AM
I'm sorry I didn't ask a question... I forgot, and didn't ave much time. (I'm in England Spock!:))

the answer - one of the elves made noise with a horn, and a voice gave answer from the top?

Spock
08-07-2004, 09:34 AM
You need to be more specific than that.....go to the Tower of London and find a quiet spot to think. :-)

Spock

I don't see any post after the 23rd of July. This is just a test to see if the page reloads when posted to. I've tried reloading etc. and don't get any new information.

How about an answer to that question?

Radagast The Brown

Ok... what about 3 elves that used horn to tell there are guests, and horns from top returning a message?

Spock
08-09-2004, 11:22 AM

Radagast The Brown

But I said that!

Sorry, Radagast, I wasn't going to answer the question while you were on the right track, however, I wanted to put you out of your misery. :D :p

So here is my question....

Where was Gandalf when Frodo, Sam and Pippin set out from Hobbiton?

Radagast The Brown
08-14-2004, 07:53 AM
I answered the question correctly, really. I don't understand what Spock is saying, but I answered the question just like you did. Maybe he didn't understand me.

Anyway, the answer to your question should be in Rohan. Or maybe aready passed Rohan during his journey back to the Shire.

Elanor the Fair
