Ok this is a trivia thread, you may only post a question once you have answered the previous question correctly, answers too all the questions must be found in the hobbit.
Heres one:
How many times were Smoke rings blown in The Hobbit?
Theodred
08-21-2001, 09:25 PM
Ah, trivia! IT would be great if bmilder made a trivia forum!
6?
Meneldil
08-22-2001, 12:20 PM
Im afraid not, it would be better if you could name the places as well:)

I think thats a trick question it mentions 2 that Bilbo blew outside his house while talking to Gandalf, then later while the talking to Thorin,Gandalf popped smaller rings inside Thorins:p
Meneldil

Poppy i really ment at how many occasions were smoke rings blown, although your getting close
Strange-Looking Lurker
08-24-2001, 03:18 PM
When Gandalf first talked to Bilbo
During the Unexpected Party
In the cave, just before the goblins got them
In Beorn's house
(at the end, Bilbo hands Gandalf the tobbaco, but it doesn't say that he actually blew smoke rings)
So it's 4 times.

And your question is?
Strange-Looking Lurker
08-25-2001, 12:33 PM
What was the name of the oldest race of Dwarves?
Finmandos12
08-25-2001, 01:11 PM
the petty dwarves

The Longbeards, in that their Father was the first to awaken.
Who were the Dwarves in the Company most skilled in making fire?
Ithildin
08-26-2001, 07:40 PM
Oin and Gloin! (See "Roast Mutton" just before they saw the trolls' fire.)
Ñólendil
08-26-2001, 09:52 PM
Yep, your turn to ask a question.
Ithildin
08-27-2001, 06:11 PM
Okay!
Sorry to take so long...I don't usually have any chances to get online over the weekends, and it was actually my brother who posted my answer for me.
So, anyway,
How many and what kind of animals (and insects) that Beorn kept were mentioned in the book?
bombcar
08-27-2001, 11:48 PM
There were five.
First bees (big as hornets), then horses (with very intellegent faces), then ponies (beautiful white ones), then dogs (large, long-bodied ones), then at last sheep (snow white ones lead by a coal black ram).
I do not count the bears at the bears' meeting, because they were not "animals ... that Beorn kept."
But if you wanted to that would make the total six.
Now my question.
When is the last time that Bilbo wishes for his hobbit hole?
Bonus question:
When is the last time Tolkien adds "Not for the last time!" after Bilbo's wish for his hobbit hole?
Ñólendil
08-28-2001, 03:51 PM
Hmmm. Was the last time after the Battle of Five Armies, before he actually did set off for home?
And as for the bonus question, ... some time in Thranduil's halls?
Ithildin
08-29-2001, 02:10 PM
Bombcar, I hate to disappoint you, but you didn't quite get the answer right.
I counted five also, but that's because I counted horses and ponies as being basically the same thing. So, I guess the answer is either five or six, (depending on your view of ponies and horses); and there is one more type of animal that Beorn kept besides those you listed.
And, yes, I didn't count the bears, either.
Your questions are intriguing, though. I'll have to do some looking through my copy of The Hobbit. :-)
It might be a good idea for all of us to start waiting for confirmation from the trivia-question-poster before posting our own question. Although, of course, when you're dealing with people (like me) who can't get online every day it does slow everything down for everybody else. Just a thought...

No new guesses?
Ithildin
09-04-2001, 08:26 PM
Come on, y'all! You're a bunch of smart people! (You're all Tolkien readers, after all.) I know you can do it!!
Bomcar, you're sooo close!
I'm going to give y'all the benefit of the doubt since it's been Labor Day weekend, but's it's over a week now since I posted my trivia question. I guess I'll have to start posting clues if someone doesn't get it within a couple days.
So, worthy Tolkien lovers, grab your copy of the Hobbit and have at it!! Prove me wrong in thinking that I'll have to resort to clues!
*cheers and a rousing Sousa march*

Great a pep talker, why don't you go talk about the wonderfulness of school down in the General Messages forum :p ;) . I can't answer because I can't open up my copy of the Hobbit and everything I type is by memory. The same probably applies to others, or they're all on vacation (I wish I was).
Ithildin
09-06-2001, 06:20 PM
Goodness, WebWizard, I was acting goofy, couldn't you tell? Maybe I'm just not good enough at getting my mood across in writing. And y'all don't know me very well yet, either. So, fyi, I'm usually a very serious person, and that's a pretty silly post for me. No need to get all huffy, and I didn't mean to offend anyone...
webwizard333
09-08-2001, 08:53 PM
I thought that the smilies gave away that I was being sarcastic (I preson I'm very sarcastic). It is very difficult to get moods across on forums, but if I use smilies I'm being sarcastic. ;)
Incanus
09-09-2001, 08:10 PM
Beorn kept bees, horses, ponies, dogs, sheep (& a ram) and owls. Am I right?
Ithildin
09-10-2001, 09:38 AM
Yes, it does mention that Bilbo thought he heard owls during the evening...
"...and still they sat in the light of the dancing flames with the pillars of the house standing tall behind them, and dark at the top like trees of the forest. Whether it was magic or not, it seemed to Bilbo that he heard a sound like wind in the branches stirring in the rafters, and the hoot of owls."
Is that what you're talking about, Icanus? I hadn't counted that, though, because I didn't consider it to be "animals that Beorn kept".
Hint for everyone: Look for the reference to the fifth, (or sixth, depending on your view of horses and ponies), type of animal or insect before the company arrives at Beorn's house.
P.S. Sorry about the mix-up, WebWizard. Things CAN get confusing when you can't see people's expressions. :D I'll make sure to note smilies from now on.

09-11-2001, 12:14 PM
After reading it about 20 times I finally found the answer, and I'll kill you if it's wrong :p Beorn also had cattle.
Ithildin
09-12-2001, 09:16 AM
LOL! (Glad to have been spared my life.)
YES! Incanus, you got it right! Congratulations on your perseverance.
For everyone else...when Gandalf is explaining to the dwarves who this "Beorn" is that he's taking them to see, he says that "he keeps cattle and horses which are nearly as marvellous as himself". I thought that would make my trivia question a rather tricky one! ;)
Ñólendil

ahem, sorry, here's my question:
How many times does Bilbo wear the ring?
Ithildin
09-15-2001, 09:44 PM
ewwww....tough question! ...about like the smoke rings one. (It requires searching through the whole book.) Looks like we've got some research ahead of us.
Incanus
09-16-2001, 07:15 AM
If it gets too hard I'll think up a hint, but it's only the half of the book after he finds it anyway so it shouldn't be too bad :D
poppy
09-16-2001, 02:39 PM
I think i've got the answer but i could be wrong as this is from memory.
1.When he found the ring after the riddle game (and coming out of the Misty mountains.
2.In mirk wood when the Giant spiders captured the dwaves.
3.Again when the wood elves turned up to take them to the wood king palace. Also looking for Thorin and when they left in the barrels.
4Talking to Smaug the Magnificent.
5.When he gave the Arkenstone to Bard the Dragon slayer.
6Then mostly at the end when unplesant visitors came to call.
So i think you can say it's about six times in all.
Strange-Looking Lurker
09-16-2001, 07:29 PM
Missed a couple....twice in the Mountains (when he escaped from Gollum, and then it came off his finger, before he got to the guard room). Also, at that one stop between the elves pallace and the Long Lake.
Incanus
09-19-2001, 03:56 PM
Not quite, there are more. Also, I'd like to note that I've counted all the times he used it from when the dwarves were captured in Mirkwood by elves until they reach Lake Town as one usage. Also the times he hid from "unwanted visitors" also all count as one. Hope this makes it slightly easier. When you need a hint just ask.

The only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is at the (birthday- farewell party), and that is not in the Hobbit.
Eowyn, The Lioness
09-24-2001, 06:33 PM
1~ when he ran away from Gollum
2~ when he ran away from the goblins after his riddles with Gollum until he met up with the rest of the party again
3~ when he was trying to save the dwarves from the spiders
4~ when he followed the elves into their palace (or whatever you wanna call it)
5~when he was looking for Thorin
6~ when he was on the barrels and the barrels were out in the open
7~ when he met Smaug
8~ running away from the dwarves down to the village to give the Arkenstone to Bard
9~and again in the Fellowship of the ring when he was at his eleventy-first birthday party ( before he went to Rivendell)
At least I think that's right.
Incanus
09-29-2001, 07:18 AM
OK this seems to be quite tricky, sorry :D A few pointers:
I'm only including the Hobbit ones, not the one in LotR
From sneaking into the elves' prison to reaching Lake Town is ONE use, as it doesn't always mention when he takes it off or puts it on, although he clearly does at some points.
If you need more help, post and I'll do my best.
Hee hee good luck

11-19-2001, 08:55 PM
Here goes...
1. In the tunnels fleeing from Gollum
2. At the back-door, avoiding the goblins. Kept it on until rejoining the dwarves.
3. In Mirkwood, driving off the spiders the first time.
4. In Mirkwood, drawing off the spiders away from the dwarves. (This is when he first told the dwarves about the Ring.)
5. As the dwarves were waylaid by the elves. (Stipulated that from now until Esgaroth counts as one usage)
6. With Smaug, to steal the cup.
7. With Smaug, to chat.
8. Under Erebor, while Smaug pounds Esgaroth.
9. Sneaking out of Erebor with the Arkenstone. (Presumably, he would have put it back on to sneak back in, but this is NOT explicitly stated)
10. At the Battle of Five Armies.
He wore it an unspecified number of times to avoid unwanted visitors.
Bonus: From LOTR, there were 2 occasions.
1. The Long-Expected Party
2. On the road in the Shire, to avoid the S-Bs. (Caught by Merry)

Does Bilbo take the ring off between escaping from Gollum and escaping by the back door? Still that's pretty good.

Incanus i love your user name! one of Gandalf's names, if i recall correctly, what he was called in the...West? the elves called him Mithrandir, the Dwarves Tharkun, in his youth he was Olorin, to the West he is Incanus, in the North he is Gandalf, and to the East he goes not. ok that was really random, but :)

04-03-2002, 09:20 PM
In the book Gandalf said that there were two theorys about who Beorn is decended from. What are they and whitch one does Gandalf suspect to be true?
"The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began."
TinuvielChild
04-03-2002, 11:22 PM
theories are that he is descended from the great and ancient bears of the mountains, or that he is descended from the first men, that came before Smaug or the goblins. Gandalf believes the second theory, that he is descended from the early men, to be the true tale.
ladyisme
04-04-2002, 07:17 PM

What is cram (give a full description), and who makes it?

hmmmm...yeah, that's as close as you'll get without actually quoting from the Hobbit, so it's your turn, Agburanar! (btw, i like your sig! Deutsch macht Spass :) )

Strange-Looking Lurker
04-13-2002, 06:04 PM
Wasn't he coming back from strangling a goblin?

Your question!
Strange-Looking Lurker

How about...
What day of the week did Bilbo run out of his snug hobbit hole with nary a pocket hanky?
TinuvielChild
04-15-2002, 09:06 PM
that's easy! Thursday!
Agburanar
04-16-2002, 04:42 AM
Is't still called Thursday in the Hobbit calendar???
azalea
04-16-2002, 08:50 AM
As far as The Hobbit is concerned, yes, because the Shire names of the week were not used, but according to Appendix D in LotR, the Shire name for Thursday at the time was Mersday.
Strange-Looking Lurker
04-16-2002, 10:52 AM
How interesting.

*Snaps at the hand*
I bet you'd taste good wif sum salt and pepper.
Den why didn't you ast da question, instead of hurtin yer hand on me orky noggin?
You coulda ast a harder question like which king were the spears forged by the dwarves in Erebor and found untouched in Smaugs hoard intended for? And if you really wanted ta impress me, where was his kingdom located?
azalea
04-16-2002, 12:05 PM
King Bladorthin, but I don't know where the kingdom was. Near Mirkwood? Near Fangorn?
Now let SLL ask one.
TinuvielChild
04-16-2002, 09:18 PM
yeah. it was SLL's turn, but i answered Blackheart's because it was so bloody easy. just to prove my knowledge of the Hobbit, of course, not to ask another question. me no like asking questions, me prefer answering them. ;)
Blackheart
04-17-2002, 12:55 AM
BAh, - no one knows where 'is kingdom was located eh?
The key is in the name....
But I'll puts it on hold, though it's cursed unorky to take turns I hast to say...
azalea
04-17-2002, 08:42 AM
Does it have to do w/ grey trees? or am I looking at it the wrong way?
Is it Gondor?
Blackheart
04-17-2002, 10:24 AM
Well, it definately has to do with grey....
But not trees.
And it was supposed to be on hold...
barrelrider110
04-17-2002, 12:50 PM
Just like an orc to go out of turn, but since SLL is still thinking I will give it a shot. King Bladorthin was most likely a contemporary of Thror II, which would mean the Dunedain kingdoms were long gone. "Long since dead" means that he was not an elf (and besides no third age elf would have ordered arms from Dwarves) and his Kingdom was east of the Misty Mountains. It could have been Dale, but the lords of Dale up to the time of Girion were not called kings. Hmmm. The kingdom must have been close enough to Dale and Erebor to conduct trade.
Methinks his kingdom was Dorwinion, (where the Elves wine comes from). Gold inlaids are showy but not practical in battle, which would suggest his spears were probably just for show-- for parades and royal guards and stuff.
Gandalf's name was originally Bladorthin, but since its pronunciation is "bladder-thin" it sounded a bit too ridiculous for a wizard, so the professor changed it.
Confirm if I'm right or not, oh impetuous and brutish one, but nonetheless I will defer until SLL comes back, or wait a while.
Blackheart
04-17-2002, 01:29 PM
Very good. Bladorthin was the name Tolkien considered for the grey one. The best complete translation I have seen is "grey one from the land of the Valar" but the Welsh elements are admitedly odd.
And Dorwinion is one of the best possible locations for his kingdom.... Though it is by no means certain.
Jar it's a trick qwestiun, what didja spect?

Ok, ok, I've got it!
Who was with Biblo just before he killed his first spider?
Aragorn_iz_cool
04-19-2002, 06:18 PM
All the Dwarves
Blackheart
04-20-2002, 12:56 AM
Umm, his first spider? giant spider or little one?
Giant spider would be no one, as it had caught him napping and partially bound his legs, forcing him to beat it off with his hands until he could draw his dagger, slash the webs on his legs- and stab the spider.
After which he named the dagger sting - wiped it off and put it in the sheath.
If memory serves me.
Strange-Looking Lurker
04-20-2002, 09:08 PM
his first big spider. And yes, there was somebody with him!
TinuvielChild
04-20-2002, 09:48 PM
was it fili or kili?
Blackheart
04-20-2002, 11:38 PM
Well now was it just before, or during?
but really- I hope your not counting the precious.
Because one of the associated statements about killing the spider was that it made a real difference in Bilbo's self view, killing the spider all alone and by himself.
If I recall correctly, he fell asleep after being seperated from the dwarves at the woodelves night revel (the third or 4th time they tried to get some help- damnable elves) and woke up being wound in silk by a spider. And I don't remember any spiders being killed before that one....
And you can't count the spider either!
azalea
04-21-2002, 09:05 AM
It has to be either Sting or the Ring. (or the spider -- ???)
Strange-Looking Lurker
04-21-2002, 10:48 AM
Yes, it's the spider! It's azalea's turn, 'cause Blackheart said that it couldn't be...so that doesn't really count.
And why couldn't it be?
azalea
04-21-2002, 01:47 PM
Very tricksy! Well, mine can't be found in the book, so I hope it's a fair question. Unless you have an original ed.
What episode of The Hobbit did Tolkein make changes to in later editions, making it different from the first published editions? (For extra credit, tell why ).
I have a hint if you need it.
Blackheart
04-21-2002, 10:22 PM
BAh. No fair counting the spider, that's just ... bah.
I know WHY he changed it, but I'm not exactly sure which edition it was.
Ohhh- episode! Well hmm- which chapter is it when bilbo meets gollum the magical odd creature who had a ring he was going to give him as a reward for answering the riddles?
The original story dealt with the finding of the ring in a much different manner, gollum had actually offered to give him the ring as a reward for the riddle competition, but Bilbo had found it already and forced him to show him the way out.
Of course when he started to write the LOTR, this scenario would never do for the one ring. No one would offer it as a prize in a riddle competition. So he changed the story to the current version, and then in a very nice little stroke of genius, said that the original story was the lie that Bilbo told to cover the real circumstances of the finding, and to be rid of the title of thief.
Close enough?
azalea
04-22-2002, 08:33 AM
EXCELLENT! I found that to be very interesting when I read about it. You really know your Hobbit!
Blackheart
04-22-2002, 09:40 AM

Does that mean I have to ask a riddle.. err question?

04-22-2002, 01:18 PM

Hmmm. err scratch that...
Blackheart
04-22-2002, 01:29 PM
ahh. Oh hell I don't know- an easy one then- How did Thorin get his surname Oakenshield?
TinuvielChild
04-22-2002, 01:49 PM
oooh i know this one-hold on a mo.
In the battle of Azanulbizar (sp?), Thorin's shield got cut in two, so he threw it away and cut off a branch of an oak to use as both a shield and a club.

woo-hoo! go me!
k. since i have already asked a question (and because i can't think of a new one ;)), i am going to forfeit my turn and give it to the next person who posts. slightly unfair to those who are not online right now, but whatever. :)

Thank you TnuvielChild.
Who was the strongest dwarf?
Strange-Looking Lurker
04-22-2002, 05:08 PM
oh...man...that's a hard one! I'd guess Fili and Kili, 'cause their both young fellows.
azalea
04-22-2002, 07:17 PM
DORI!
Agburanar
04-23-2002, 04:07 AM
Strongest in which way? Thorin's gotta be pretty strong, but I think it would be very difficult to lay out Bombur!
barrelrider110
04-23-2002, 10:15 AM
Azalea is correct. In Chapter 8, "Flies and Spiders", when Bilbo and the Dwarves are debating how best to retrieve the tied boat from the opposite bank of the enchanted stream, Thorin states:
"Dori is the strongest, but Fili is the youngest and still has the best sight," said Thorin. "Come here Fili, and see if you can see the boat Mr. Baggins is talking about."
Well done, Azalea. Your turn to ask a question.

How many riddles are told in Riddles in the Dark?

Alright, Bilbo could not have escaped from what, even if he used his ring?

His shadow.

04-24-2002, 01:55 PM

Errrg....
How many hobbits are mentioned by name in the hobbit?
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 08:51 AM
I do hope you are not playing another of your Orkish pranks and given us a trick question, master Blackheart. Nonetheless, I will endeavor to answer.
5 Hobbits are mentioned by name:
1. Bilbo
2. Belladonna Took, aka Mrs. Bungo Baggins
3. Bungo Baggins
4. Old Took
5. Bullroarer (Old Took’s great granduncle)
The Sackville-Bagginses are mentioned as a group but none individually by name, so they don’t count.
Blackheart
04-25-2002, 11:21 AM
That appears to be all of them.....
I won't be tricksey, and say Gollum, because he's not actually mentioned by his name "Smeagol". ;)
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 11:26 AM
Thank you, Blackheart. Very gracious for a thug.
Gollum was not a Hobbit anyway. His race of fisherfolk were "the grandfathers of the grandfathers of the Stoors." A distant relation I'd say.
I will think of a question shortly.
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 11:33 AM
Where did the great dragons breed?
Blackheart
04-25-2002, 11:34 AM

Rm. If'n it smells like a 'obbit, looks like a 'obbit, and tastes like a 'obbit, then I cooks it like a 'obbit!
The northern wastes.

barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 11:40 AM
Oh mister Blackheart, we must remember our table manners, now, mustn't we? No drooling. By the way, pass the Tabasco, please.
Anyway, with regards to your reply, Thorin tells us where the great dragons bred, but I'm afraid it's not the northern wastes.
So sorry. Guess again.:D
Blackheart
04-25-2002, 12:30 PM
Well the wastes beyond the Grey Mountains are often called the Northern wastes, which lie in Forodwaith.
Didn't he say the Grey mountains?
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 12:38 PM
No
azalea
04-25-2002, 01:41 PM
The Withered Heath, at the eastern edge of the Grey Mts.
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 01:54 PM
Correct, oh flower of springtime.
Said Thorin at the unexpected party:
"I remember the Mountain well enough and the lands about it. And I know where Mirkwood is, and the Withered Heath where the great dragons bred."
Your turn.
azalea
04-25-2002, 01:59 PM

What kind of wine was the wood elves drinking that allowed the dwarves and Bilbo to escape? (In other words, where did it come from?)
barrelrider110
04-25-2002, 02:06 PM
Dorwinion
Blackheart
04-25-2002, 02:08 PM
Bah! withered heath=northern wastes.

It's like saying king Bladorthin was from Dorwinnion, where they make all that heady wine that gets butlers and turnkeys to fall asleep.

04-25-2002, 02:20 PM
I don't think they are quite the same. I was looking for something more specific, but truth be told I should have said you were close. Since I answered azalea's question, I yield will to you, Blackheart. Ask away.
azalea
04-25-2002, 02:22 PM
Correct! Next?
Blackheart
04-26-2002, 12:39 AM

The voices in my head are all quiet.
It's weird, like something's going to happen....
barrelrider110
04-26-2002, 08:23 AM
Thank you, Mr. Blackheart.
Being the old hobbit that I am, I am fond of gardening, cooking, and eating (not necessarily in that order). So the next question is very dear to my heart but might be a bit of a challenge to answer:
Name three herbs mentioned in the Hobbit.
Hint: Tobacco is not an herb. These herbs can be found in any respectable hobbit or human pantry.
Blackheart
04-26-2002, 10:56 AM
Galenas (pipeweed)
hmmm
I don't suppose sorrel is an herb... or is it?
Wasn't there a mention of ....
was it thyme? oh drat, I'm getting the books mixed up :/
Pipe weed and Sorrel I know are mentioned... hmmm.
barrelrider110
04-26-2002, 11:17 AM
You got 2 Master Blackheart, very good.
The leaves of the Eurasian wood sorrel O. acetosella can be used as a potherb, so yes, that is one.
thyme is another.
Pipeweed is not an herb, and its not in the Hobbit.
The answer requires one more herb. There are at least two more in the book. Keep trying.
Blackheart
04-26-2002, 12:47 PM
Seasoning herbs?
Like Marajam and Parsley?
hmmm
I can't remember if they mentioned Marajam in the hobbit, I know it was in Rotk...
barrelrider110
04-26-2002, 12:50 PM
Marjoram makes three. Sage is the fourth.
Your turn.

Black Emporers is what Tolkien called them. Black.
Blackheart
05-02-2002, 03:54 PM
Yes, he said that. "perhaps a sort of" black emperor, or some such.
But I carefully avoided giving a specific answer so I could shove the question off on some other unsuspecting person.- you win. :D
Strange-Looking Lurker
05-02-2002, 05:43 PM
Nope, they were not black. Try again.

Actually, what tolkien said was that they were similar to the 'purple emporor' but they were black.
Wayfarer
05-02-2002, 09:51 PM
Actually, what tolkien said was that they were similar to the 'purple emperor' but they were black. I.E. 'Black emperor'. He never actually said they were purple.
Strange-Looking Lurker
05-03-2002, 08:59 AM

What writing instrument is used to make moon letters? (Specifically, what's it made of?)

They were silver pens.
What happened to the provisions they brought with them out of the Shire?
barrelrider110
05-07-2002, 09:28 AM
Silver pens is correct!
:)
barrelrider110
05-07-2002, 09:34 AM
The provisions they brought out of the Shire were nearly used up by the time they encountered the Trolls. They replenished their stock from the Troll's lair and at Rivendell but all, including ponies, were confiscated by the Goblins.
Blackheart
05-07-2002, 12:40 PM
Actually, they weren't so much used up, as much of the remainder was washed down the river when the pony ran into the flood. Just prior to Will, Tom, and Bert.
barrelrider110
05-07-2002, 12:50 PM
Ah, right you are Mr. Blackheart.
Then one of the ponies took fright at nothing and bolted. He got into the river before they could catch him; and before they could get him out again, Fili and Kili were nearly drowned, and all the baggage that he carried was washed away off him. Of course it was mostly food, and there was mighty little left for supper, and less for breakfast.
Strange-Looking Lurker
05-08-2002, 05:33 PM
So, what's the new question?
Blackheart
05-08-2002, 05:43 PM
Grrr. What have I got in my pocket?
How many teeth does Gollum have?
azalea
05-08-2002, 08:38 PM

05-08-2002, 08:48 PM

TinuvielChild
05-08-2002, 09:37 PM
6! i don't want to ask another question though, i'm no good at asking. "Teeth, teeth, but we has only six!" says Gollum after Bilbo's riddle "Thirty white horses on a red hill. First they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still".
