The Lady of Ithilien
10-25-2002, 07:23 PM
Thanks! But first, a non-trivia question: what is petem?
OK, here's the "official" question: what are the only two metal implements we see at Beorn's place?
Lizra
10-25-2002, 11:19 PM
Yes, he never explained the "Petem" mystery!
How about an ax, and the knives they used for eating?
The Lady of Ithilien
10-26-2002, 09:01 AM
A sharp answer, Lizra (ooh, bad pun). Your turn.
Lizra
10-26-2002, 10:38 AM
Ha! :) So......How was the path to Rivendell marked?
Radagast The Brown
10-27-2002, 05:02 PM
I have no time to answer your question Lizra, but Petem is cram as cram is petem. "petem" is probably a hebrew transltion. orry. but she did guess well.
Radagast The Brown
10-29-2002, 04:23 PM
it was marked: some with white rocks (stones?) some of them little, some of them cover with moss and another thing I can't translate.
Lizra
10-29-2002, 09:15 PM
Yea! Very good! I can just picture this. Your question next.
Radagast The Brown
11-01-2002, 05:54 PM
How tall are hobbits? (usually)
Khadrane
11-02-2002, 11:09 AM
Two to four feet tall although nowadays they rarely grow to be over three feet tall? I can't remember if that description is from "The Hobbit" or from the introduction to "Lord of the Rings" (or neither) and I don't have my book down here to check.:(
Radagast The Brown
11-03-2002, 03:52 PM
no, that's wrong.
The Lady of Ithilien
11-03-2002, 07:23 PM
They're about half our height and shorter than Dwarves?
Radagast The Brown
11-04-2002, 07:09 AM
right, your turn.
The Lady of Ithilien
11-04-2002, 10:22 AM
Yay! OK, I hope this hasn't been asked already, but without peeking, name four things to eat and three to drink that you would have found in Bilbo's pantry on the day of the unexpected party.
Radagast The Brown
11-04-2002, 04:09 PM
drink - tea, wine, coffe. eat - silvery cake (the right word I hope), butter biscuits, cheese, salad. There were more but you asked for three drinks and four types of food.
The Lady of Ithilien
11-04-2002, 04:41 PM
Well, the silvery cake is probably the same as the seed cake, and the buttery biscuits are probably the same as the buttered scones (as an American, I'm not even sure whether the other biscuits mentioned -- Bilbo nibbled one while sitting at the fireside -- weren't cookies); technically, it was red wine, but who's fussy? :)
Your turn, Radagast. And please pass the porter.:D
Radagast The Brown
11-04-2002, 04:50 PM
of course Ma'am Ithilien. Here it is - what did Bombur wanted told Bilbo to bring? (in the unexpected party)
Lizra
11-04-2002, 08:13 PM
Pork-pie and salad!
Radagast The Brown
11-05-2002, 04:32 PM
right! yourn turn. :D
Lizra
11-05-2002, 10:12 PM
OKAY........What "service" had gandalf once rendered to the eagle Lord?
The Lady of Ithilien
11-05-2002, 10:32 PM
Healed the Eagle King of a wound?
Lizra
11-05-2002, 10:34 PM
Wow! You are "The Speedy Lady of Ithilien"! An arrow wound.......Your go!
The Lady of Ithilien
11-06-2002, 10:32 AM
I don't know about "swift," as I constantly get error messages when I try to log on, having left out an "i" in Ithilien :) , but "speedy" is OK. So . . . Z-O-O-O-O-O-O-M: In Bilbo's front hall at Bag End is the door bell itself closer to the clock or to the umbrella stand?
Ms. Undomial
11-06-2002, 12:36 PM
Umbrella stand?
The Lady of Ithilien
11-06-2002, 04:13 PM
Umbrella stand?Hmmm -- I just spotted a weak spot in my question: it can be answered by default, if it's not the umbrella stand (and it's not -- it's closer to the clock). Well, Bilbo got away with asking an unorthodox question in the Riddle Game; maybe I can get away with rephrasing my question?
Rephrased question, if acceptable to everybody, with a clue: Where exactly is the doorbell itself located in Bilbo's front hall, if one is standing in the hall facing the front door? (Hint: It's not "close to the clock" or "far from the umbrella stand.")
The Lady of Ithilien
11-06-2002, 04:16 PM
...doesn't anyone else have an illustrated Hobbit?
Radagast The Brown
11-08-2002, 03:35 PM
I don't know. sorry.

I don't have an illustrated Hobbit, however I looked up JRR Tolkien's sketch of Bag End, and I do see a clock, an umbrella stand, and a doorbell.
If one is standing in the hall and facing the front door, the doorbell is hanging from the cieling on the right hand side.
Is that the answer you were looking for?
The Lady of Ithilien
11-08-2002, 05:20 PM
And a thousand apologies to all for assuming that every edition of The Hobbit is illustrated.
Your turn, barrelrider110.
Lizra
11-09-2002, 09:13 PM
Callingbarrel Rider 110! Ask a question please! :)
The Lady of Ithilien
11-12-2002, 10:24 AM
Hmmm--perhaps he's been nabbed by River Elves and roped into an unwanted journey downstream. :) May it not be a long one!
In the meanwhile pending his return, I suppose it defaults back to me again. No illustrations this time, I promise. This sounds like a wise question but isn't:
How many dwarves does it take to cross an enchanted stream?
Agburanar
11-12-2002, 11:47 AM
That reminds me of a joke...
How many dwarves does it take to change a lightbulb?
It depends how high the ceiling is!!!!
Ok, that's not very good.
It takes one to spot the boat and eleven to cross tje river carrying the twelfth. (If it's the river in Mirkwood, if it's a normal river it depends how deep the river is!!!)
The Lady of Ithilien
11-12-2002, 03:59 PM
Oh no, that's not it at all. :)
Radagast The Brown
11-12-2002, 04:05 PM
ammm.... 8 dwarves?
Ms. Undomial
11-12-2002, 04:11 PM
was it 13?
zavron
11-12-2002, 04:12 PM
how about a 104.:D
Radagast The Brown
11-12-2002, 04:14 PM
zavron, that's not so funny.
barrelrider110
11-12-2002, 04:18 PM
I'm back from my journey downstream.
This is another good question that required some research, i.e., I had to look it up.
Fili threw the rope;
Kili and Oin and Gloin helped him to haul it back in;
Balin stopped the boat from floating away in the current.
Therefore if my count is correct, the answer is five.
The Lady of Ithilien
11-12-2002, 08:44 PM
Welcome back, barrelrider 110! Did you bring any goodies back?
This is a tough one to call. I counted six named in the book:
1 -- Fili to throw the hooks;
3 -- Kili, Oin and Gloin to haul the boat back (and collapse comically when it came loose);
1 -- unnamed by Fili, in the first lot that went over, to haul on the rope and bring them across;
1 -- unnamed by Fili but"one of the others" in the first lot to hook the second rope onto the boat so it could be hauled back.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it logically. Correct me if I'm missing any steps in the process, but it would take another dwarf to haul the boat back, and either the same dwarf or another from the second group to then haul them across, which brings the count up to seven or eight.
But then the process would have to be repeated for Dwalin and Bombur, adding another dwarf (we can probably safely assume Bombur didn't do any hauling), so we have eight or nine.
I didn't count Balin's fending off the boat, as it wasn't an integral part of the process.
Well, it's debatable, but will stick with six as the number clearly mentioned in the book. However, barrelrider110 is due a turn, so I'll bow out. Your go, sir!

Thank you, M'Lady
Who first suggested to Thorin to share the treasure under the mountain with the lake men and elves?
Lizra

Lizra
11-13-2002, 10:51 PM

barrelrider110
11-15-2002, 04:13 PM
Good question.

:) ;)
Moon letters.

Thanks, Lizra.
Radagast The Brown
11-15-2002, 05:14 PM
I'll ask the question... ok?
on what instrument did Thorin played in Bilbo's house?
Christiana
11-15-2002, 10:13 PM
harp.
zavron
11-16-2002, 07:29 AM
come on then ask a question!!!!
Lizra
11-16-2002, 08:39 PM
Here's a quickie while we wait for Christiana...
What did Gandalf give the Old Took?
Christiana
11-16-2002, 09:49 PM
a pair of magic diamond studs.
What was the fifth sentence the Elven-King spoke?
Lizra
11-17-2002, 02:35 PM
"Did you not three times persue and trouble my people in the forest and rouse the spiders with your riot and clamor?"
Christiana
11-17-2002, 04:39 PM
no.
Lizra
11-17-2002, 05:57 PM
#1 "Besides they need no ropes in here."
#2 "There is no escape from my magic doors for those who are once brought inside."
#3 "It is a crime to wander in my realm without my leave."
#4 "Do you forget that you were in my kingdom, using the road that my people made?"
#5 "Did you not three times pursue and trouble my people in the forrest and rouse the spiders with your riot and clamour?"
So, what did I miss? :)
Christiana
11-18-2002, 12:40 AM
Hint:he interogates Thorin.
Lizra
11-18-2002, 01:09 AM
OHHH! "Very well!" :D
also "Take him away and keep him safe, until he feels inclined to tell the truth, even if he waits a hundred years."
Agburanar
11-18-2002, 06:18 AM
What? How are we supposed to get that without a book? Erm, Ok... (thinks:confused:  )
The first words (by human standard) were probably 'mama' or 'dada', I'm gonna say that that contributes to one sentence.
Then they'd probably be introduced to the moon and stars, so that's probably the second.
Because he's a wood elf the third would have to be wood-associated.
The fourth might have been bow-themed (they're tought to shoot quite soon) so I'd say the fifth was probably....
"Eat cold steel Orcish scum, haha!"
Lizra
11-19-2002, 03:19 PM
Step up Christiana! We want to play! :)
Lizra
11-19-2002, 11:13 PM
Well, while we're waiting, Who used to scare Bilbo with wolf imitations?
Christiana
11-20-2002, 12:59 AM
Sorry! I have to work during the day!
one of his elder cousins on the Took side.
Corecto mundo Lizra.
Lizra
11-20-2002, 09:55 PM
Correct for you too! Now you have to ask another! :)
Christiana
11-20-2002, 10:47 PM
Right,errr....
Whose spears had never been payed for or delivered?
Agburanar
11-21-2002, 05:07 AM
I think it was the elven king, but it could have been the master of Lake Town.
Christiana
11-22-2002, 12:06 AM
nope.:)
Radagast The Brown
11-24-2002, 04:25 PM

Christiana
11-24-2002, 11:27 PM

barrelrider110
11-25-2002, 10:18 AM
King Bladdorthin
Christiana
11-25-2002, 10:15 PM
grrrrrrr.ur right.
barrelrider110
11-26-2002, 10:36 AM
An interesting piece of trivia-- The wizard in Tolkien's story was originally named Bladorthin, however when spoken the name sounded like "bladder-thin". The rest is, as they say, history.
Next question:
For whom were "Biter" and "Beater" made?
Agburanar
11-26-2002, 11:13 AM
They were made BY the elves of Gondolin for the Goblin wars.
I don't know WHO actually wielded them but I suppose they were elves of Gondolin.
barrelrider110
11-26-2002, 11:32 AM
They were forged in Gondolin, however, please indulge me with a more specific answer: For whom was Glamdring forged?
Lizra
11-26-2002, 12:39 PM
Glamdring, Foe-Hammer, (Gandalf's sword), Beater, belonged to the King of Gondolin, I want to say Turgon, but that is a guess. Orcrist, Goblin-Cleaver, Biter, (Thorin's sword), also from Gondolin, who was it's original owner?
barrelrider110
11-26-2002, 12:47 PM
You are correct. Glamdring was Turgon's sword, but to be consistent with the theme of this thread "the King of Gondolin" is all that is mentioned in the Hobbit. There is no mention of the owner of Orcrist, and I apologize for including it in my original question.
Your go, Lizra
Lizra
11-26-2002, 01:14 PM
I'll pass it to Agburanar.....Agburanar, ask us a question! (Barrelrider, do you know who Orcrist belonged to from some other source?)
barrelrider110
11-26-2002, 02:41 PM
Lizra,
I found this the TORN site in Greenbooks Q&A:
Q: I wanted to know who, in Gondolin, bore Orcrist, Thorin's sword in The Hobbit.–CĂ*rdan
A: All we know of Orcrist is what Elrond tells us–it was "a famous blade." One can only conjecture that its bearer was one of the two most famous lords of Gondolin whose names we know, Ecthelion of the Fountain who slew Gothmog Lord of Balrogs, or–more interestingly, in view of Tolkien's later writings–Glorfindel of the House of the Golden Flower, who, it is thought, returned to Middle-earth and dwelt in Rivendell when Thorin brought the blade there.–Ostadan
Lizra
11-26-2002, 04:03 PM
Thank you!
Lizra
11-27-2002, 11:35 PM
Well, try this for a quickie....Where did Radagast live?
Christiana
11-27-2002, 11:49 PM
Rhosbegel.(sp)
Lizra
11-27-2002, 11:55 PM
Well, you could be right! I was thinking of an area in ME, Where is Rhosbegel (or whatever!) :)
Christiana
11-28-2002, 12:29 AM
Near the Southern borders of Mirkwood.
Lizra
11-28-2002, 12:31 AM
Yes! Ok christiana, Stump us! :)
Christiana
11-28-2002, 01:32 AM

Khadrane
11-28-2002, 12:53 PM

Christiana
11-28-2002, 04:11 PM
i said the Elvish calender.
Lizra
11-30-2002, 01:19 PM
Is this elvish month mentioned in The Hobbit?
Christiana
11-30-2002, 04:02 PM
errr...no.:( sorry!
Radagast The Brown
11-30-2002, 04:25 PM

Lizra
12-01-2002, 11:45 PM

Christiana
12-02-2002, 12:23 AM
Dain son of Nain.

Christiana
12-03-2002, 01:11 AM
Wha was the fourth iddle asked"
Agburanar
12-03-2002, 11:32 AM
The fourth iddle? bizarreness....
Was it: eye in a blue face saw an eye in a green face. That eye is like this eye but in low place not high place?
Christiana
12-04-2002, 02:32 AM
yes.
Agburanar
12-04-2002, 05:04 AM
Excellent, what a guess!
Okay....
How many nights did Thorin's company spend in Beorn's house?
Lizra
12-04-2002, 07:33 AM
Quick guess, two? :)
Radagast The Brown
12-04-2002, 03:58 PM
I think that two is the right answer.
Duddun
12-04-2002, 07:58 PM
I think 4?
Agburanar
12-05-2002, 06:19 AM
I meant to check last night as I can't quite remember, but I forgot, idiot! Still I think the answer is two so it's your go Lizra, unless someone can prove me wrong!
Radagast The Brown
12-05-2002, 05:08 PM
OK, Lizra, ask a question.
Lizra
12-05-2002, 05:15 PM

Aeryn
12-06-2002, 07:54 PM

Christiana
12-06-2002, 08:16 PM
"precious"?
Aeryn
12-06-2002, 08:21 PM

Duddun
12-07-2002, 12:07 AM
Ok, I have to think of one. Give me a few minutes.
Duddun
12-07-2002, 12:10 AM
It's rather easy but:
What is one way the Trolls threatened to eat the Dwarves and Bilbo?
Sit on and squish 'em into jelly.
Duddun
12-07-2002, 01:08 AM
Yup, Your turn.
What did Bilbo lose while escaping the Orcs and Gollum in the Misty Mountains?
Duddun
12-07-2002, 01:16 AM

Lizra
12-08-2002, 05:12 PM
Beer and seed cakes? (for starters)
Duddun
12-08-2002, 07:54 PM

Christiana
12-08-2002, 10:21 PM
errrr.......my copy of Th has gone missing:eek:
Lizra
12-08-2002, 10:36 PM
I don't think it comes right out and says what Fili ate. They were all drinking beer (ale) and eating up Bilbo's freshly cooked seed cakes that he had made for his lunch. The later arrivals had "special orders", but I don't think Fili did. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here! :)
Radagast The Brown
12-09-2002, 04:50 PM
I guess that in the beginning they drank tea. Afterwards I'm sure they ate and drank more things.
Lizra
12-10-2002, 04:48 PM
Hey Radagast!........I dare you to ask a question, a hard question! :D ;)
Radagast The Brown
12-10-2002, 05:01 PM
Who from the dwarves discovered the way to the lost mountain?
barrelrider110
12-11-2002, 04:46 PM
I don't know what you mean. Thrain the Old first discovered the mountian, Thrain, Thorin's father gave the map to Gandalf, and Fili and Kili and Bilbo found the secret door. Please re-state the question.
Radagast The Brown
12-13-2002, 04:53 PM
allright... I mean, in The Hobbit, in the book.
and yes, you're right.

Spooky avatar Radagast, but it's growing on me. Too bad RtB didn't make a cameo in the movie.
Anyway, back to Trivia:
What is just about the only thing fit to eat that can be foraged in Mirkwood?

12-30-2002, 04:59 PM
Thank you Christiana.
Why did the company of Dwarves and Hobbit change their planned route of travel through Mirkwood, and who gave them that advice?
Lizra
01-01-2003, 12:20 PM
Beorn gave them the advice that caused them to change their plans. The main forest road (that they had intially planned on using) was often used by goblins. The road itself was rumoured to be over grown and difficult at the eastern end, also impassable marshes at the eastern end. This road would have taken them far to the south of the Lonely Mountain.

Oh, very good Lizra, I am impressed.
Thorin's father (Thrain) and grandfather (Thror) barely escaped with singed beards, and Balin was with Thorin "wandering about".

Agburanar
01-10-2003, 06:22 AM
It was a black bow, or to be precise THE Black Bow. It was also, I believe, a long bow and probably made of ash.
Lizra
01-10-2003, 07:30 AM
Sounds good Agburanar, Except it wasn't made of ash. It was something else! :) ????
Agburanar
01-10-2003, 08:45 AM
Yew??????

Here's a question while waiting for Radagast. :)
"What did the trees at the eaves of Mirkwood look like?"
Agburanar
01-13-2003, 09:33 AM
I'm here. I think they were green, but I'll wait for confirmation on that!
barrelrider110
01-13-2003, 09:35 AM
"Their trunks were huge and gnarled, their branches twisted, their leaves were dark and long. Ivy grew on them and trailed along the ground."
Very forboding. Waiting for flying monkeys to arrive any minute.
Lizra
01-13-2003, 10:41 AM
Well, that is correct barrelrider! (as usual :) )
barrelrider110
01-13-2003, 10:56 AM
Thank you, Lizra, but I don't feel as smart if I have to look it up.
Try this one:
What was Gollum's answer to this riddle?

barrelrider110

But Radagast, were they "brown" eggses? (*hears groans*)
Sorry,

Agburanar
01-20-2003, 06:39 AM
Really? Hey ho. I seem to recall that I'm owed a question, and as this isn't getting anywhere I'll ask one now... (if that's okay with everyone)
How long did it take Bilbo to run to the Green Dragon?
Melkor's significant othe
01-20-2003, 09:36 AM
10 minutes????? (GUESS)
Agburanar
01-21-2003, 06:05 AM
Think about what time he left Bag End, and remember that he arrived on the stroke of eleven.
Lizra
01-22-2003, 02:02 PM
15 minutes
barrelrider110
01-22-2003, 02:22 PM
Gandalf arrived at half-past-ten, and shooed Bilbo out the door shortly after. Bilbo arrived at the Green Dragon at the stroke of 11. Although Gandalf said "you only have 10 minutes", I would say it took Bilbo about 30 minutes. The Green Dragon is in Bywater, and Bywater's probably a mile or two from Hobbiton, and Bag End is a little farther, so that seems about right that it took Bilbo about 30 minutes at a trot.
Lizra
01-22-2003, 04:30 PM
But doesn't Bilbo tell Thorin, "I didn't get your note until after 10:45 to be precise." Of course, the events at Bag End with Gandalf happen as you report Barrelrider, I suppose "the burglar" could be stretching the truth, when talking to Thorin....So, what say? Agburanar?
Agburanar
01-23-2003, 06:04 AM
I wasn't expecting it to be that complicated! Although I agree that the Green Dragon is a long way to run I would take the references to time as the correct answer, so 15 minutes.
Your turn Lizra.:)
barrelrider110
01-23-2003, 09:23 AM
Maybe he could move those stout little hobbit legs faster than we thought. "Wingfoot I name you! Or maybe, Trotter.".;)
OK Liz, I'm done digressing. Give us a good one!
Lizra
01-23-2003, 09:31 AM
Very well, this should be an "easy one"! Who was it that insisted on having the Gollum story, riddles and all, told all over again, with the ring in it's proper place? When did this happen?
Dunadan
01-23-2003, 09:52 AM
Balin, back at Bag End when it was all over
Lizra
01-23-2003, 12:09 PM
Yes it was Balin,(so you are right with the basic question Dunaden, and should ask the next one :) ) but the query did not occur at Bag End at the end of the story, some other time......
Christiana
01-23-2003, 10:28 PM
When he rescued the dwarves fr the spiders.
Lizra
01-23-2003, 10:57 PM
Yes, that's when he had to "fess up". Old Balin was quite curious!
Christiana
01-24-2003, 01:09 AM
hmmmmmm..........
What did Thorin do when he said"we are not so bad off now"?
Lizra
01-24-2003, 09:26 AM
Dunadan is still up for a question too! Whenever.... :) I think we can handle two!
barrelrider110
01-24-2003, 09:34 AM
He stroked a gold chain about his neck.
Agburanar
01-24-2003, 11:33 AM

Radagast The Brown
01-24-2003, 05:15 PM
I answered right few times and didn't write a question. Sorry. That's because of my mouse...
Lizra
01-26-2003, 01:39 PM
Dunadan and Christiana need to ask questions! ;)
Christiana
01-26-2003, 08:21 PM
Barrelrider110 got mine.
Lizra
01-27-2003, 12:36 AM
So when did this gold chain stroking occur? Why was Thorin pleased? Just wondering! :)
barrelrider110
01-27-2003, 11:47 AM
Thorin is in Bag-End, relating the story of the sacking of Erebor. By stroking his gold chain and saying "we are not so badly off, " I interpret that he's saying that he really doesn't need the money, but his quest is motivated more out of pride and revenge rather than greed.
Back to trivia
Who was "Old Galion?"
Agburanar
01-27-2003, 12:02 PM
Was he Bard's father, or his grandfather? I can't remember which but I know he was something to do with Lake Town.
barrelrider110
01-27-2003, 12:37 PM
Nope, sorry. Old Galion was definitely not related to Bard.
Meriadoc
01-27-2003, 09:33 PM

barrelrider110
01-29-2003, 01:25 PM

Butterflies! the emperors were the butterflies at the tops of the trees in Mirkwood! But what color. Alas I'm at work, and no Hobbit to look it up. I will hazard a guess..........
Blue!

Beleg Strongbow
01-29-2003, 02:01 PM
Purple.
RĂan
01-29-2003, 02:12 PM
Blackboar - "poiple" is how a person from Brooklyn, New York would say "purple".
And no - not purple or blue!
barrelrider110
01-29-2003, 03:53 PM
Yeah, poiple, ya know? Like 'Duh Culuh Poiple.' :D
OK. Nuff o' that.
Black; velvety black emperor butterflies.

Poiple? (http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/loth/c/u/cuypers/poiple.jpg.html) Or Purple?
I was constantly thinking: I saw elvenkings and dwarflords in 'the hobbit' but am I that blind that I missed a whole emperor? :p
The butterflies in Mirkwood, right? When Bilbo climbs in a tree to see where they are? I completely forgot that scene. I think barrelrider110 got it.
