Radagast The Brown

Ok. I can't ask a qustion because I lent the book to my aunt.
Valandil
10-10-2003, 04:51 PM
(temptation...)
OK! I'll try again:
What was Bilbo doing on his 51st birthday?
Valandil
10-19-2003, 11:11 PM
I've GOT to stop posting questions from my memory. I always answer that way - but I've been asking that way and keep coming up with bad questions!
I was pretty certain Bilbo was riding a barrel down the river on his 51st birthday. However, after asking it - and nobody answering, I decided to check the book. I looked and looked and didn't find it. I thought maybe it was before or after (remembered some mention about his b-day!) and STILL didn't find it!
Turns out I remembered right, but had the wrong source. In the first chapter of FOTR, while giving his b-day speech, Bilbo mentions that he arrived at Esgaroth on his 51st birthday. So, it was a bad question because it wasn't in "The Hobbit"
So... I withdraw the question and open the table for somebody else to ask one...
Sorry folks!:(

Hmm, I don't have my book, but here's a question
What is the first thing Bilbo stole in his role as a thief?
Radagast The Brown
10-25-2003, 01:31 PM
the wallet of the trolls?
jsandecker
10-25-2003, 01:47 PM
Bilbo didn't actually get the wallet... Does the ring count? I don't have my book with me, but i think it's either the ring or the food he stole in the elves' castle.
Lizra
10-25-2003, 03:09 PM
Hey! He didn't steal that ring! He FOUND it! ;)
Elvengirl
10-25-2003, 08:29 PM
Hmm... seems to be a debate. :D
When I asked the question I was thinking of the cup he stole from Smaug, but that is incorrect. Bilbo didn't actually succeed in stealing the wallet and I agree with Lizra that Bilbo FOUND the ring :) .
I think the taking of food from the elves is correct, so take it away jsandecker. :D
jsandecker
10-26-2003, 11:12 PM
Thanks, Elvengirl. Let's see... Here we go. ;) This should be an easy one. Sorry, I don't have my book with me. Why did Smaug think that Bilbo called himself "Barrel-rider?"
Elvengirl
10-27-2003, 09:50 AM
He thought Bilbo rode a pony named Barrel?
Radagast The Brown
10-27-2003, 02:46 PM
What do you mean why? Didn't Bilbo said he's the Barrel Rider?
Bombadillo
10-27-2003, 04:19 PM
Aha!
Smaugh thought that Bilbo meant he was a trader from Esgaroth, who rode on rafts with bunches of barrels.
jsandecker
10-27-2003, 07:51 PM
I think Elvengirl got it. Smaug said, "'Very well, O Barrel-rider!' he said aloud. 'Maybe Barrel was your pony's name" Your turn, Elvengirl.:D
Elvengirl
10-27-2003, 09:34 PM
At what time did the auction begin the day Bilbo returned?
jsandecker
10-28-2003, 05:21 PM
The auction began at 10:00 am, but Bilbo got back at noon.
Elvengirl
10-28-2003, 08:01 PM
Yeppers :)
jsandecker
10-30-2003, 09:43 AM
;) Here's one. Where was Billbo when he first said he would rather be at home? :D
Valandil
10-31-2003, 11:46 AM
Hokay... I guess I'll guess. :)
Was it when he caught up to the dwarves at the place where they were departing from, after running there from his home when Gandalf showed him the note on the mantlepiece - and he made it just in time, but didn't have anything with him? Just at the beginning of chapter 2?
jsandecker
10-31-2003, 06:10 PM
Yup.:D You got it. It was about 4 pages into chapter 2. They were on the trail that led them to the trolls. Your turn, Valandil.
Valandil
10-31-2003, 06:25 PM
Two Goblin Kings were killed in "The Hobbit"... who killed each of them?
jsandecker
10-31-2003, 08:52 PM
Let's see...;) I know this one, but I'll see if someone else can get it.:D
jsandecker
11-03-2003, 10:15 AM
Well, since no one else volunteered an answer, I guess I'll have a go.;)
Gandalf killed the Great Goblin in the underground tunnels, and Beorn killed Bolg(not sure if that's right) at the battle of Five Armies.:)
Valandil
11-03-2003, 11:17 AM
Don't have a book here to verify Bolg - but that sounds right. You're certainly right on the part I asked... your turn!
jsandecker
11-03-2003, 05:06 PM
Here goes...
What did Bilbo give to the Elvenking, and why did he give it to him?
Maedhros
11-03-2003, 11:27 PM
From The Hobbit: The Return Journey
"I beg of you," said Bilbo stammering and standing on one foot, "to accept this gift!" and he brought out a necklace of silver and pearls that Dain had given him at their parting.
"In what way have I earned such a gift, O hobbit?" said the king.
"Well, er, I thought, don't you know," said Bilbo rather confused, "that, er, some little return should be made for your, er, hospitality. I mean even a burglar has his feelings. I have drunk much of your wine and eaten much of your bread."
"I will take your gift, O Bilbo the Magnificent!" said the king gravely. "And I name you elf-friend and blessed. May your shadow never grow less (or stealing would be too easy)! Farewell!"
Now my question is this:
From From The Hobbit: Roast Mutton
Others said: "These parts are none too well known, and are too near the mountains. Travellers seldom come this way now. The old maps are no use: things have changed for the worse and the road is unguarded. They have seldom even heard of the king round here, and the less inquisitive you are as you go along, the less trouble you are likely to find."
Who is this king that they are referring in this part?
Valandil
11-03-2003, 11:34 PM
Is that answer in "The Hobbit" though?
Maedhros
11-04-2003, 09:16 AM
The answer is in the Hobbit and it's incredibly simple.
Thinking about it now, the question needs rewording. What does the phrase in bold means?
Elvengirl
11-04-2003, 06:13 PM
I don't know where the specific answer is, but I figured it they were talkin about the Numenorean kings.
jsandecker
11-04-2003, 09:37 PM
Wild Guess!!!:D Would it be the king under the mountain? If not, I have no clue.
Maedhros
11-10-2003, 09:20 PM
From The Annotated Hobbit: Roast Mutton. Note 14
The mention here of the king is probably not meant to refer to an actual personage but instead to invoke the idea of the king as the theoretical source of justice, law, and order.
Who used to wield Glamdring in ancient days, before our party regained it?
jsandecker
11-10-2003, 10:12 PM
To answer your question, the King of Gondolin once wore it. As to your previous question, aren't we supposed to be asking questions that have answers in the regular version of the Hobbit?
Maedhros
11-10-2003, 11:59 PM
The previous question is a matter of meaning of the phrase. You don't need a special version to answer it.
Radagast The Brown

-edited-
Valandil
11-11-2003, 12:39 PM
Maedhros,
Gotta agree with jsandecker about that prior question: none of my editions of "The Hobbit" spell out who that king was. Your own answer indicates that one would need the annotated edition. After reading the LOTR books, I always assumed it referred to the no-longer existent Kings of Arnor / Arthedain... even Rhudaur - since that's the territory where this happened (as opposed to the note you cite from the annotated edition).
We'll let you get away with THAT one! :) Just don't do it again! :p - OK?
Now - does jsandecker go next? Was that the answer you (Maedhros, again) wanted for the other? Looks like he gave it first.
PS - if you look back a few weeks, you'll see that I was also guilty of asking a question not found in the book... asked without checking! So... join my little club! :D
jsandecker
11-13-2003, 08:14 PM
:) Okay. Let's see how long it takes for someone to get this.
;) How many wood-elves were mentioned by name or job when Bilbo and the dwarves were in the elves' "mansion?" ( i don't know if it is a castle or not. :D :o )
Lizra
11-14-2003, 10:02 PM
two?
Valandil
11-14-2003, 10:42 PM
I can think of three: the king, the butler (?) and the captain of the guard.
Radagast The Brown
11-17-2003, 03:14 PM
Valandil, I suggest you'll ask a question, no matter if you're right or wrong. (I got my 'Hobbit' back! :))
Valandil
11-17-2003, 03:34 PM
OK - but I may have to check my own book to verify this one (I THINK I know it though):
Who was the first dwarf to show up at Bilbo's door for the "unexpected party?"
Radagast The Brown
11-17-2003, 03:59 PM
Balin?
Valandil
11-17-2003, 04:02 PM
That's who I was thinking. Should we wait until I get home to check it? Or do you want to check yourself - then ask a question if you were right (in which case, maybe wait 3 hours to post the right answer if you were wrong... agreed?)???
Radagast The Brown
11-17-2003, 04:11 PM
Ok - so I checked in the book, and it was Dwalin (sp.)... :o
I agree - I won't ask a question 'till tomorrow (because more 3 hours I will be asleep)
Valandil
11-17-2003, 04:26 PM
You might as well ask, since you went ahead and posted the right answer (he was the other one I thought of... and I wasn't SURE - I knew they were the first two - and Balin was generally nicest to Bilbo).
OR - I could ask another?
Radagast The Brown
11-17-2003, 04:35 PM
If you want to ask, ask. :)
Valandil
11-17-2003, 04:54 PM
Who was the fattest dwarf... who slept for much of the tip through Mirkwood?
jsandecker
11-17-2003, 06:01 PM
Sorry 'bout that. I wasn't able to get to the computer for a couple of days. I think the answer to that is Bombur.:D
Valandil
11-17-2003, 06:04 PM
Timely return... and CORRECT! Your turn again...
jsandecker
11-18-2003, 07:24 PM
After raiding the troll's cave, what did the dwarves get to eat for breakfast?
Lizra
11-18-2003, 08:55 PM
Bread and cheese, plenty of ale, and bacon. :)
jsandecker
11-19-2003, 10:39 PM
Yup.:D Your turn.
Lizra
11-20-2003, 07:43 AM
What did Bilbo say he would give a good many of....."for a drink of something cheering out of one of Beorn's wooden bowls!"?
Radagast The Brown
11-24-2003, 04:14 PM
Lizra, a hint?
Lizra
11-24-2003, 04:41 PM
Hmmm, well I'll try. :) The dwarves wouldn't have given a good many of them, for a drink!
brownjenkins
11-24-2003, 04:49 PM
i believe it was in reference to the dragon loot after smaug left and the dwarves moved into erebor (and the lack of good food and drink)... maybe jewels or goblets
Lizra
11-24-2003, 08:56 PM
Very good! Precious goblets had little value to our "down to earth" halfling. :)
brownjenkins
11-25-2003, 10:27 AM
i haven't read the entire thread... but in order not to hold things up for weeks :p i'll pose a question that hopefully hasn't been asked before:
where did Bilbo keep Sting after he returned home?
Elvengirl
11-25-2003, 01:14 PM
Well, I haven't heard this question, but Lizra could probably tell you if it has been asked.
Anywho, the answer is Bilbo hung it above his mantle.
Lizra
11-25-2003, 03:41 PM
I don't remember that one. :) Just don't ask "who lent Bilbo a silk handkerchief?" :D
brownjenkins
11-25-2003, 06:02 PM
correct elvengirl... over the mantlepiece :)
Elvengirl
11-25-2003, 06:46 PM
Who lent Bilbo a silk handkerchief?
j/k sorry Lizra, that was soo not funny :D
Ok real question
Who was the Lord of Dale whom is now deceased?

OK - this just popped into muh head... Girion?
Elvengirl
11-26-2003, 12:08 PM
That was fast :D and here I thought it would be a more difficult question. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at a fellow Mooter's knowledge. :D
Go ahead Valandil. :)
Valandil
11-26-2003, 01:46 PM
OK!:)
Who (on presumably good authority) had, "et a village and a half between (them), since (they) came down from the mountains"?
Radagast The Brown
11-26-2003, 03:17 PM
I don't understand what's 'et'.
jsandecker
11-26-2003, 03:52 PM
I think "et" is ate, and it sounds like the trolls. Just to be sure...(ruffles through book) Here it is! Yup, it's the trolls Bert and Tom.:D
Valandil
11-30-2003, 12:10 AM
Yes, jsandecker, you're correct! Ask away...
Sorry to throw you off Radagast the Brown. Accents must be tough. Is your version of "The Hobbit" in English? If so, it's probably written that way, but even then, I could see you not really "getting" it! :)
jsandecker
12-04-2003, 07:48 PM
Sorry, I've been sort of busy the last few days. let's see... Ahhh, my brain is completely blank!!! If anyone else wants to ask a question, you're welcome to take my turn. :D
Radagast The Brown
12-05-2003, 04:32 PM
When was the first tie Bilbo said he wanted to go home?
Elvengirl
12-05-2003, 06:38 PM
lol I was just thinking of that question. :)
I believe it was the first day, but it was raining and everything was wet and miserable. He wished he was home by the fire, and with the kettle on.
Radagast The Brown
12-06-2003, 11:46 AM
Yup. :)
Elvengirl
12-06-2003, 12:30 PM
Thanks Radagast. :)
Who removed Thorin from the fray of battle?
Radagast The Brown
12-06-2003, 03:39 PM
Beoren?
Elvengirl
12-07-2003, 09:06 AM
Yes, it was Beorn. :)
Radagast The Brown
12-07-2003, 09:11 AM
What did the elves gave Thorin in his prison?
Elvengirl
12-07-2003, 09:16 AM
I think this has been asked before, but I'll answer it again :)
Thorin was given bread meat and water.
Radagast The Brown
12-07-2003, 09:18 AM
Correct!
Elvengirl
12-07-2003, 09:47 AM
Who asked for seedcake at Bilbo's unexpected visit?
Radagast The Brown
12-07-2003, 05:08 PM
Balin?
Elvengirl
12-07-2003, 05:27 PM
yup :)
Radagast The Brown
12-08-2003, 08:51 AM
How much does Smaug's armour worth in shields, from what he says?
Elvengirl
12-08-2003, 10:14 AM
It is like tenfold shields.
Radagast The Brown
12-08-2003, 03:44 PM
Correct. :)
Elvengirl
12-08-2003, 06:10 PM
What did Bilbo claim he would do if he were fifty times as big and Smaug was as tame as a rabbit?
Elvengirl
12-14-2003, 06:40 PM
wow may be the first time I've stumped you guys. :p :)
Anyone know?
Is a clue needed?
Valandil
12-15-2003, 12:08 AM
Seems like he's indicated how unimportant to him the treasure is, but I forget the exact reference...:)
Elvengirl
12-15-2003, 09:45 AM
Mmmm....... no, but you are kind of close.
Bilbo also says he should want hundreds of years to do it.
Radagast The Brown
12-15-2003, 03:51 PM
He said - hundreds of years were needed for me to bring all the treasure, even if I was 50 ties as big and Smaug was a tame a a rabbit? To the dwarves, that wanted hiom to bring the treasure from Smaug when Smaug was alive.
Elvengirl
12-15-2003, 05:48 PM
That is correct Radagast. :)
Radagast The Brown
12-16-2003, 04:11 PM
Hard question, Elvengirl! Needed to look for ity up.
Wat colour did Beorn's chair have?
Elvengirl
12-17-2003, 11:14 AM
Thanks Rad :)
Was his chair brown?
Radagast The Brown
12-17-2003, 01:43 PM
No.
Elvengirl
12-17-2003, 03:09 PM
Then it was black
Radagast The Brown
12-17-2003, 03:37 PM
Indeed! Your turn. :)
Elvengirl
12-19-2003, 03:28 PM
Thanks

Elvengirl

Right you are. :)
Valandil
12-19-2003, 03:37 PM
When Gandalf sent Bilbo and the dwarves into Mirkwood, there was something he did not know about that path - which he found out while down south and it caused him great concern.
What was it?
macmico
12-19-2003, 04:12 PM
not sure is that he found out the sauron ws taking shape in the necromancer in dol-guldor in south mirkwood
Valandil
12-19-2003, 04:35 PM
Nope - he pretty well knew that. That's why he went south to meet with the White Council and drive him out... but we don't know that from "The Hobbit" anyway. There was something he found out while he was down there... and that IS in "The Hobbit"
ethuiliel
12-22-2003, 06:09 PM
That the end of the path was blocked, and there was no way to the edge of the forest except the river, which the elves controlled.
Valandil
12-22-2003, 06:18 PM
Good enough for me... wasn't exactly blocked - I think it just became less distinct until it was no more - and you're right, one pretty much had to follow the river to get out the east end of it.
Your go!
ethuiliel
12-26-2003, 12:21 PM
I thought I had posted a question earlier, but apparently it didn't work.
Why did Bilbo forget that he had invited Gandalf to tea?
Elvengirl
12-26-2003, 12:37 PM
He didn't remember things unless he wrote them down? or something like that
macmico
12-26-2003, 02:02 PM
he didnt write it in his engeagement tablet because he was too flustered
ethuiliel
01-02-2004, 01:01 PM
Sorry, I was on vacation and the one time I got on a computer, it didn't work.
You're both right. It's Elvengirl's turn.
Elvengirl
01-03-2004, 04:04 PM
I don't have a question or my book right now, macmico, you can go if you want
Radagast The Brown
01-10-2004, 04:59 PM
Ok, I ask a question (a week passed):
What Fili didn't want to smell anymore after the dwarves and Bilbo escaped from the elves?
cassiopeia
01-10-2004, 08:20 PM
Apples?
Radagast The Brown
01-11-2004, 05:29 AM
Yes.
cassiopeia
01-12-2004, 07:26 PM
Sorry if this question has been asked; if it has I'll think of a new one.
What sickness fell upon the old Master after the Battle of the Five Armies?
Christiana
01-21-2004, 12:32 AM
the sickness of dragon gold?
cassiopeia
01-21-2004, 07:02 PM
Not quite, but close.
Lady Ravyn
01-22-2004, 08:10 PM
hmm....dragon-sickness, or something like that?
cassiopeia
01-22-2004, 08:31 PM
That's correct!
Lady Ravyn
01-23-2004, 08:19 PM
cool! and on my firsat try too! (i'm shocked- i stink at rivia)
umm, let's see here...
this might have been asked, but: how many days were bilbo and the dwarves on the river (you, know, bilbo on top of and the dwarves inside the apple barrels)
Radagast The Brown
01-24-2004, 10:14 AM
2?
Lady Ravyn
01-24-2004, 02:01 PM

Christiana
01-24-2004, 07:40 PM

Lady Ravyn
01-26-2004, 09:20 PM

Twista
01-27-2004, 02:52 PM
and the new question?
Christiana
01-27-2004, 08:25 PM
What armor was Bilbo given?
Nurvingiel
01-27-2004, 08:27 PM
Mithril armour that must have belonged to a young prince at one time.
Christiana
01-27-2004, 08:29 PM
tehehe. Thats not all.
Nurvingiel
01-27-2004, 08:43 PM
There's more information about the former owner? Or what else? (Clue :D)
Christiana
01-29-2004, 01:15 AM
herecieves more armor than just th4e mithril coat :D
Twista
02-05-2004, 02:59 PM
Whoes turn?
Radagast The Brown
02-07-2004, 12:48 PM
alright, then I'll ask a question...
When did Bilbo decide to call his sword 'String'?
Elf Girl
02-07-2004, 12:54 PM
He didn't. What kind of a name is 'String'? :D ;)
He named it 'Sting' because, I think, when he killed the spiders with it he thought it was a kind of sting they hadn't felt before.
Radagast The Brown

when he killed his first spider yes.

Twista.. my question was still unanswered
Radagast The Brown
02-24-2004, 04:51 PM
steel armour? (was given when the dwarves first saw the treasure)
Christiana
02-25-2004, 01:07 AM

Bombur, if my memory does not fail me? (It may, of course)

It does. ;) Sorry, you're wrong.

Lady Ravyn
03-08-2004, 11:29 PM

ethuiliel
03-09-2004, 05:33 PM
Close enough, I guess I'll accept that. It was "Thag you very buch."
Was that too easy?
Lady Ravyn
03-09-2004, 11:07 PM
well, it was kinda easy... sorry ;)
omg! all the good quotes have been done already; now i know why all the easy ones are starting to be posted! lol :) ummm...

What did Beorn do with the Warg and goblin?
ethuiliel
04-16-2004, 09:50 PM
He killed them. Then he put the warg skin and goblin head on the fence.
Elvengirl
04-17-2004, 12:35 PM
almost ;) the warg skin was not on the fence
ethuiliel

Radagast The Brown
05-03-2004, 04:27 PM
Can I ask for a hint?
Meneldil
05-05-2004, 03:53 PM
I'm not certain he said this, but I thought it mentioned that "Elvish singing wasn't a thing to miss", or something along those lines.
ethuiliel
05-07-2004, 12:38 PM
So far, the closest guess was when Valandil said it was too loud.
One clue:
Bilbo heard the "lullaby" I'm talking about when he passed through Rivendell on his way home.

Thanks... yeah, I had remembered it was on his way home. Seems like he slept in real late - until they woke him up and he opened his window and joked around with them (and didn't they joke back about his snoring?) :p
Did he say something like that their singing would actually wake people up? :)
Radagast The Brown
05-07-2004, 05:49 PM
Oh, right... Valandil, I tyhink you're right. Now I remember... he said their singing can wake up a sleeping man and they said his snoring can wake up a sleeping stone dragon, or something like that.
ethuiliel
05-07-2004, 09:21 PM
You guys are getting a lot closser, but not quite. It wasn't a sleeping man that it would wake...
