Here we go again, same rules as always, example below (thanks to Sister Golden Hair):

example: A_l/_h_t/_s/_o_d/_o_s/_o_/g_i_t_r

answer: All that is gold does not glitter, Gandalf's letter (or Bilbo Baggins)

Anything from The Hobbit, LOTR, the Silmaillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game.

So solve the quote correctly and state the speaker. The person to "place the last piece" of the puzzle get's the opportunity to post a new quote, and right now that would be me so I'm starting with a long one (but with a fairly obvious speaker!):

"B_h_l_/I/_o_e/_h_/E_r_h/,/_h_c_/s_a_l/_e/_/m_n_i_n/
/_o_/t_e/_u_n_i/_n_/t_e/_t_n_/!/B_t/_h_/Q_e_d_/s_a_l/
/_e/_h_/f_i_e_t/_f/_l_/e_r_h_y/_r_a_u_e_/,/a_d/_h_y/
/_h_l_/h_v_/a_d/_h_l_/c_n_e_v_/a_d/_r_n_/f_r_h/_o_e/
/_e_u_y/_h_n/_l_/m_/C_i_d_e_/;/a_d/_h_y/_h_l_/h_v_/
/t_e/_r_a_e_/b_i_s/_n/_h_s/_o_l_/./B_t/_o/_h_/A_a_i/
/_/w_l_/g_v_/a/_e_/g_f_."

Yea! The beginning of another illustrious quote game. :)

"Behold I come/_h_/Earth/,/_h_c_/shall be a/m_n_i_n/

If you got the last word, you get to go. Nice work guys. :)

Or are we playing whoever solves the last bit of the puzzle gets to go? In this case, that would be whoever solves the speaker.

Random guess: Yavanna?

The person that solves the last element of the puzzle, whether it be speaker or a word, goes next.

But my guess is that 'elfearz' also got the speaker... see their bit about 'Eru' under the solved quote? That's a strong guess, since the wording includes 'my children'... does anyone recognize it and have the right book handy to check?

Meanwhile, with 'elfearz' likely sleeping, should somebody else go ahead and post? :)

I think we should go instead, while she's off... If someone volunteers.

Not me! I didn't look over the whole thread... but elfearz still solved the 'last' piece, which is the determining factor.

Still, you may post if you like, since elfearz isn't around and we like to keep the quote game moving... :)

Actually, I believe it would be Tuor's turn, as he picked the last word as being "dismayed". Either way, I'm sure whoever of the two gets on first will post a quote - our egos are fairly robust! (or at least I would like to think so...) :D

Having said that, I'm starting to imagine a scenario where Nurv gets on and posts. Meanwhile, Tuor arrives screaming "USURPER!" then challenges Nurv to a duel (wielding a trout, of course)! *chortle*

Ahh the Barrow Wights! I'll see how much I can do from memory:

"Cold be hand and heart and bone,
And cold be sleep under stone;
Never more to wake on stony bed,
never, till the Sun pails and the Moon is dead.
In the black went the/_t_r_/shall die, (??)
and still on gold here let them lie,
till the dark hold mists his land (??)
Ever dead wet and withered hand.

I'm sure there's a few mistakes in there, especially in the last four lines...

BTW i said nurv cause nurv got 'broil', no-one else did...

I checked - sorry I didn't realise R*an had already guessed "dismayed". My apologies, LCoU. I was fairly sleep deprived when I made that post, hence the trout duel comment... :D

lol good point! And that's how Gollum sings it in his wierd version of this quote in the TT movie.

"In the black went the stars shall die" - I don't think "went" is right it doesn't make sense.

"If you think that I have passed through the mountains and the realm of Gondor with fire
and sword to bring herbs to a careless soldier who throws away his gear, you are mistaken.
If your sack has not been found, then you must send for the herb-master of this House. And he will tell you that he did not
know that the herb you desire
had any virtues, but that it is called westmansweed by the vulgar, and galenas by the noble, and other names in other tongues more learned, and after adding a few half-forgotten rhymes that he does not understand, he will regretfully inform you that there is none in the house, and he will leave you to reflect on the history of tongues. And so now must I."

And it IS Aragorn, Nurv! :) He said it to Merry after healing him, when Merry inquired about his pipe and/or weed - which was laying on the floor by his bed.

'My friend, you can harden, and ready of arms, and the

doomed to wait upon an old man, whom she loved as a father, and watch him fall into a mean dishonoured dotage; and her(??) what seemed to her more ignoble then the staff he leaned on.'

Theoden speaking to Eomer, right?

Tuor of Gondolin

I believe Radagast got it. The name Holman came to mind so I looked it up and it's "Holman the gardener." Assuming radagast meant Holman, which I think he did since Sam was guessed earlier.

Rían
03-09-2004, 01:16 PM
Yes, it's Holman Greenhand, whom the Gaffer was apprenticed to. Or actually, it's Gandalf talking, recounting what Holman said to him. The previous quote made me think of dwarves, so I flipped to the Quest of Erebor in UT and found that one.

The rest of the quote is: "It depends if I meet any, Holman, he says. It's the Elves' New Year tomorrow! A pity, and him so kind a body. You wouldn't find a better from the Downs to the River."

I omitted that part because it mentioned Holman's name!

Rad goes if that's who he meant, otherwise Tuor :)
