I have read your Pm, Valandil. But I'll reply tomorrow, it's kinda late and I don't have the power to reply. It requires concentration. And I lack of it right now.

Post a new quote though, Valandil. I need new quotesssss, yessss... ;)

elfearz - you were all correct except that 'creature' should be 'treasure' - and SGH got that one. BTW - the 'But lo!' of elfearz is correct, not, 'But no!'

Valandil
04-09-2004, 10:45 AM
Sorry! :p I'll post soon. I wasn't 100% sure, but the words started to come... and it seemed like maybe it was what Galadriel told Thingol once he found out about the kin-slaying (was that the context?).

On the one of mine that YOU just solved... I also like the narration that splits the quote - where it says that Aragorn's 'sight' first came to him. I guess he got a 'glimpse' of what was to come... or in some way a 'light bulb came on'! I always found that interesting. :)

(PS - I see you haven't added back your 60K... did you decide to forego it? ;) )

Sister Golden Hair
04-09-2004, 11:00 AM
In that particular quote, Melian is attempting to obtain some info on the reasons why the Noldor returned to M-e. Galadriel just tells her what she wants to tell her without mentioning the Kinslaying.

Yep, I decided to not go back to the 60k. This is now what my real count should be at.:)

haven't got to do one of these for a while! not sure about two of the words:

Over the land there lies a long shadow,
westward reaching wings(?) of darkness.
The tower trembles; to the tombs of kings
doom approaches. The Dead awaken;
for the hour is come for the oathbreakers:
at the stone of Erech(?) they shall stand again
and hear there a horn in the hills ringing.

and I believe the message is from Elrond, but... who spake it thus? *thinks*

*edit* first ? could be winds... or rings... or... ?? i don't know!

The quote's correct. But it's not Elrond.
Actually, I think two answers are acceptable for the speaker. The one reciting it or the one who originally gave the quote.

Well, I thought Aragorn recited it, but I know he didn't author it...

Yes. it's Aragorn citing Malbeth the Seer. So I guess either Radagast or the Count can go next. Whoever is ready first.

Oh Rian, this discussion of ours was some time ago, but I've been meaning to tell you this... our three year old is a real singer. Several weeks ago, he was singing something and I just couldn't place it (it's still sometimes hard to make out his words at times). Finally I realized he was singing: Barbara Manatee!! :D

He's funny about the words we can't understand too. Like most kids, he used to get frustrated when we couldn't understand him. Now he just grins and says, "Guess!" :p

Ahem!

May I please have the attention of the quoters :)

Tuor started a "minor works" quote game, that originally included the non-ME and somewhat-ME type books, like Farmer Giles and Adv. of Tom Bom. I asked if we could include Morgoth's Ring and Lays of Beleriand, and he graciously said it was OK. However ... I don't know, I just feel somehow that those works are more appropriate for this thread, so I wanted to ask people's opinions about adding them to this thread. Now I think we might need to limit it somewhat to only certain parts, since the HOME books have huge portions of different versions of things. So I'd like to propose the following:

1. From MR, the Athrabeth
2. From POME, The Shibboleth, also maybe The New Shadow and Tar-Elmar
3. From TLOB, all
4. from WOTJ, the Wanderings of Hurin

What's the consensus? I realize that not everyone will have all of these, but there's such good stuff in them, and I know that I like hearing about things that I don't have yet (then I usually end up getting them!)

What's the consensus? I realize that not everyone will have all of these, but there's such good stuff in them, and I know that I like hearing about things that I don't have yet (then I usually end up getting them!)

it looks like most people just ignored this post, but i'd like to put in my two cents that it is hard enough for me to get in on the quoting action as it is (current example noted *sigh*) without widening the scope beyond my reach. :(

i have hardly any time to read now... *sniff*

ok i'll stop feeling sorry for myself ;)

Sorry I didn't mean to ignore anyone, I've just been super budy too, so I miss many pages at a time in this thread.

What's the consensus? I realize that not everyone will have all of these, but there's such good stuff in them, and I know that I like hearing about things that I don't have yet (then I usually end up getting them!) I think this thread has enough material as it is. But we could start a new thread, or perhaps include your material in Tuor's thread. Then I would also like to include some of the Tales from BoLT, at least The Fall of Gondolin.

I will post a new quote soon.

Oh, I just read this part 2 weeks ago to the kiddos!

Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
? the ? and bend the forks!
Thats what Bilbo Baggins hates -
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cheese (oh, sorry :o)
Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the buns on the bedroom mat!
Splash the ? on every door!

? the ? on a ..
...
And when you're finished, if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

Oh, BONES! Silly me :o I knew buns didn't ring a bell!

Oh I think it's "blunt" the knives.
and splash the "wine", and "Crocks", and "pound".... oh well, I'll just re-print the whole thing with Arty's contributions.

And the speakers are the dwarves.

So we're at:

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!

Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl
pound them up with a thumping pole;

Send them down the hall to roll!
