Yes, it is Voronwë, when he tells Tuor about his sojourn in Nan-tathren.

"All have their worth, and each contributes to the worth of the others. But the kelvar can flee or defend themselves, whereas the olvar that grow cannot. And among these I hold trees dear. In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars forever dwell;
I will not say the day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.

Good first cut, Rad! Wrong words, in order of appearance, are: directed, go, defenced, on, not, alerted, and (before evening), in (after evening). I'll replace them.

Whoops, one error - "/t_r_i_l_e/" should be "/t_r_i_l_/" - I'll take out the extra dash.

far-stretched right hand Sauron could have done terrible harm in the North, while we defended Gondor, if King Brand and
King Dain had not stood in his path. When you think of the
great Battle of Pelennor, do not forget the battle of Dale.
Think of what might have been. Dragon-fire and savage swords in Eriador! There might be no /_u_e_/ in Gondor. We might now only hope to return from the victory here to ruin and ash. But that has been averted - because I met Thorin Oakenshield one evening on the edge of spring not far from Bree. A chance-meeting, as we say in Middle-Earth."

*imagines a guy strolling down Gondor humming a tune, and a soldier stopping him - "Hey, you! No tunes in Gondor!" *

One tends to think of Arwen as out of danger, but that quote changed that picture for me.

Yes, "queen" is right - so the big juicy quote is solved, but the little "bonus" one isn't! It's currently:

"And this also is a thing of reverence, and above my worth;

Tuor- yes, it's "forty", and the speaker is Aragorn - spot on! It's from the very end of Disaster of the Gladden Fields in UT, when Aragorn finds the secret storage places in Orthanc when he's ordering his realm, and in the super-secret place (a "steel closet" that "they could not have found or opened had not Elessar had the aid of Gimli the Dwarf") they found: in a casket on a high shelf were "a small case of gold, attached to a fine chain; it was empty, and bore no letter or token, but beyond all doubt it had once borne the Ring about Isildur's neck." and also "a treasure without price, long mourned as lost for ever: the Elendilmir itself, the white star of Elvish crystal upon a fillet of mithril that had descended from Silmarien to Elendil, and had been taken by him as the token of royalty in the North Kingdom."

I'm sure most of you guys know that, but it might be new to some, and I thought it was very interesting - JRRT "conjectures" that Saruman found Isildur's body and taken the treasures and burned the bones - a "shameful deed; but not his worst."

Anyway ... your go!

Rían
03-26-2004, 09:56 PM
ps - Aragorn wasn't speaking of the ancient Elendilmir that was found in Saruman's hoard; he was speaking of the Elendilmir that came down to him, which was also a "thing of reverence". He hardly ever wore the ancient one - he didn't want to "again imperil it".

gee, i've looked at almost every trivia thread, but i've never done this one. it's cool! so, what, do you have to guess the missing letters from the quote, right? hmm, could be tricky...

um, well, the first word is "Farewell" and the third word is "Gandalf"
so far i have "Farewell! O, Gandalf..."

Tuor of Gondolin
03-26-2004, 10:50 PM
Farewell O Gandalf/M_y/_o_/e_e_/a_p_a_/w_e_e/_o_/

a_p_a_/i_/m_/h_l_s/_h_/b_t_e_/s_a_l/_/b_/p_e_s_d!

Just solve as much as you can, usually more then a couple of words (it would take too long to solve that way) and then post the quote, completed as much as you can. The quote is solved only when
1) The quote is completed en toto and
2) The speaker of the quote has been identified.

The one who solves the last bit (either quote or speaker) gets to post the next quote (from The Hobbit, LOTR, Unfinished Tales, or The Silmarillion.

P.S. Players include people from Israel and Australia.

appear in my halls the better shall I be pleased!

Theoden, right? Sorry Lady Ravyn, but I haven't had a chance to do one for a while....

*edit* sorry "oftener" not "oftner" - speeling mistook.

*2nd edit* also, to add to what Tuor said, you're not supposed to look up the quote if you think you know where it is but can't quite remember some of the words or the speaker. it's considered bad form, and besides - it's more fun to figure it out either from memory or with logic.

Tuor of Gondolin

not sure of the speaker anyway... this is about Theoden to Merry (i presume), but who said it? Aragorn? Eomer?

Valandil, by an odd twist, no matter who the speaker is, you solved it. If it's Hurin, you got the speaker. If it's Huor, then you solved the last bit of the quote after the speaker was identified.

(Twilight Zone music begins to play).

Not sure as to which of the two is older, however Hurin was the speaker.

So Tuor is still in with a chance if he gets the last word first... :D

Tuor's solution is mostly right... just the 'any' was wrong - and elfearz is correct on the speaker (no - I don't think it made the movie cut - it IS Gandalf to Saruman). So here's where we stand... two words left:

"You would not wonder, if you used this herb yourself. You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of /s_a_o_s/ within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger. But it is not /_n_/ of my toys. It is an art of the Little People away in the west: Merry and worthy folk, though not of much account, perhaps, in your high policies."
