'No, not the first.' Mandos said.

Always thought that was a quite chilling statement.

I bet Fëanor, for that is he speaking, was a bit miffed he did not get to be the first. Always wanted to come first, the selfish bugger, he was. Great artist, though.

Varnafindë

It may be that I can unlock my jewels, but never again shall I make their like;

Great artist indeed. And one of the Valar said, "You don't know what you're asking of him" (probably said by Aulë, who would be most likely to know).

Valandil

"For the less even as for the greater there is some
deed that he may accomplish but once only;

Aikanáro
06-30-2012, 01:52 PM
All correct! Varna, your turn!

'No, not the first.' Mandos said.

Always thought that was a quite chilling statement.

Yes! Rather creepy.

I bet Fëanor, for that is he speaking, was a bit miffed he did not get to be the first. Always wanted to come first, the selfish bugger, he was. Great artist, though.

:D

'I shall be slain, second of all the Eldar in Aman,' doesn't carry quite the same dramatic weight. ;)

Of course, that would be before he found out who the first was.

Varnafindë
06-30-2012, 04:46 PM
And Fëanor was a great one for drama ...

Here's our next quote:

"N_y/!/_h_u/_a_t/_a_/t_y/_o_/./
F_r/_i_h/_y/_o_e_/t_a_/I/ _u_/i_t_/t_e_/t_y/_o_k/_a_/a_c_m_l_s_e_/./

I/_a_e/_h_m/_n_o/_y_e_f/_o_/e_e_/."

Valandil
06-30-2012, 05:13 PM
"Nay! Thou hast had thy /_o_/.
For with my /_o_e_/ that I put into them thy /_o_k/_a_/a_c_m_l_s_e_/.
I /_e_d/_h_e/_o/ _o_e/. Those things took /s_a_t/_o_/ have, nor /_e_/.
I gave them unto myself for ever."

Not sure if I'm on the right track or not - but great quotes for the last two! :)

Varnafindë
06-30-2012, 06:24 PM
Definitely on the right track. :thumb:

A few words are wrong, though:
'them' in line 2, 'Those' and 'took' in line 3, and 'gave' in line 4.

We now get:
"Nay! Thou hast had thy /_o_/.
For with my /_o_e_/ that I put into /t_e_/ thy /_o_k/_a_/a_c_m_l_s_e_/.
I /_e_d/_h_e/_o/ _o_e/./_h_s_/ things /t_o_/s_a_t/_o_/ have, nor /_e_/.
I /_a_e/ them unto myself for ever."

Earniel
06-30-2012, 07:51 PM
And Fëanor was a great one for drama ...
Very true. If the Elves would ever had invented opera, he'd be a main star! :p

For with my power that I put into thee thy work was accomplished.

These things thou shalt not have, nor get.

Valandil
06-30-2012, 08:06 PM
"Nay! Thou hast had thy /_o_/.
For with my power that I put into thee thy work was accomplished.
I need thee no more. These things though shalt not have, nor get.
I save them unto myself for ever."

Varnafindë
06-30-2012, 09:39 PM
I just noticed a mistake of mine, which is rather confusing:
thy /_o_/ should be thy /_u_/.
Sorry about that! :o

For the rest, two wrong words and one typo of sorts - 'though' in line 3 has too many letters ...

'get' in line 3 and 'save' in line 4 are not correct.

Valandil
06-30-2012, 10:37 PM
Goodness! I'm just not used to typing 'thou' - so my fingers kept going. :D

"Nay! Thou hast had thy /_u_/.
For with my power that I put into thee thy work was accomplished.
I need thee no more. These things thou shalt not have, nor see.
I have them unto myself for ever."

Varnafindë
06-30-2012, 10:47 PM
Perhaps there are English dialects still using 'thou' - otherwise it's all gone :D
Only one word is wrong, and one is still missing - we're nearly there (and will soon need the speaker).

'have' in line 4 is wrong. A word with only the vowels given is more difficult to find than when some of the consonants are given ...

Valandil
06-30-2012, 11:02 PM
I agree. Far fewer vowels to choose from, when given consonants. What's really tough is when you get like 4-5 vowels only, in a 8-10 letter word.

Varnafindë
06-30-2012, 11:13 PM
So in our case, we need to look to the meaning of the word. And I'd say that it isn't obvious - you've suggested most of the obvious options already :p

Valandil
07-01-2012, 07:13 AM
'take'? The first missing word isn't 'fun' is it? It fits - both letter-wise and could work meaning-wise - I just don't know if it fits tone-wise.

And so far I'm drawing a blank on the speaker.

Varnafindë
07-01-2012, 01:55 PM
Neither 'take' nor 'fun', I'm afraid.

No, 'fun' wouldn't fit tone-wise. It's far more sinister than that.

Aikanáro
07-01-2012, 02:00 PM
'Due' for the first gap?

Varnafindë
07-01-2012, 02:10 PM
'Due' is correct!

Aikanáro
07-01-2012, 02:20 PM
Was it said by Morgoth? (To Ungoliant, if it's from where I think it is...)

Varnafindë

By Morgoth to Ungoliant :thumb:

Varnafindë
07-03-2012, 11:44 AM
For the missing word, _a_e,
gave
save
have and
take
have been suggested and refused.

If we need to play Hangman with this word, :p I can give you one hint:
None of the suggested consonants are in use in the word.

It's all that's missing now - we've even got the speaker ...

Aikanáro
07-03-2012, 12:22 PM
It's wild guessing time! :D

Rate?

Face? :p

Varnafindë

I hope Lotesse won't mind, but I'm hi-jacking this thread and posting a quote! (it's been 3 months)

ANYway, someone pick the right speaker and let's get this game MOVING again!

Midge
01-30-2013, 04:13 PM
Aragorn?

And looking back at my previous guess, I'm 50% sure that it could be "a day DRAWS near" instead of "a day GROWS near".

Valandil
01-30-2013, 10:38 PM
Right on both points, Midge. (it IS Midge, right?) *checks*

I think I need a LOT more practice on this game. Gotta get back into shape! Get us movin' now. Your turn! :)

If the missing word is 'bow', then I'm thinking the speaker is Legolas.

Valandil
02-21-2013, 08:18 AM
The missing word is indeed "bow" (QUOTED WORDS SOLVED!!!), but Legolas was not the speaker. :)

Earniel
02-27-2013, 06:11 AM
Hm, I guess we'll be needing a different bowman then. But I'll not guess two times until someone else went first.

Valandil
02-27-2013, 08:35 AM
But it's been almost a week since that other guess - so I say 'Go for it!' :)

Midge

the only bowman I can think of is Bard the Bowman and I'm 99% sure that he's not the speaker...

It was indeed not Bard. :)

Can someone name another bowman?

turn from your fate

being forsaken
challenge the fate that lies before you -

Valandil
03-11-2013, 09:07 PM
I'll try those - and I have at least one other:

"From the shadow of death you can no longer save Lúthien,
for by her love she is now subject to it.
You can turn from your fate and lead her into exile,
seeking peace in vain while your life lasts.
But if you will not deny your doom, then either Lúthien,
being forsaken, must assuredly die alone,
or she must with you challenge the fate that lies before you -
hopeless, yet not certain."

Maybe I tried "hate" because the line before it had "love". :p

Speaker: don't know... Melian?

Earniel
03-12-2013, 06:00 AM
The quote is complete and correct but the speaker is not Melian.

Valandil
03-17-2013, 08:28 AM
I really don't know who the speaker is, but (to keep this game moving) embarrassing as it may become, I'll start tossing out names:

Mandos?

Earniel
03-17-2013, 09:10 AM
No, not Mandos.

I'll give a hint, this is one of the few time this speaker says anything in the story. Not a great talker.

Valandil
03-17-2013, 09:52 PM
Beleg? (I remember him from Turin, of course - but don't recall if he's part of the Beren-Luthien story)

Earniel
03-18-2013, 06:59 AM
No, not Beleg, I don't think he features in the story of Beren and Lúthien.

Valandil
03-18-2013, 06:18 PM
Finrod Felagund?

Earniel
03-19-2013, 07:17 AM
No, not Finrod. Unless it was Zombie Finrod, because he'd be dead by the time of this quote. Good of you to keep guessing, though. :)

Valandil
03-19-2013, 07:24 AM
Celeborn?

Earniel
03-19-2013, 12:14 PM
No, not Celeborn.

I think he had since long eloped with Galadriel.

Valandil
03-25-2013, 06:05 PM
I'm totally drawing a blank - and I'm not sure any hints would even help me. I wonder if I just don't know the speaker at all.

Anyone else got an idea?

Varnafindë
03-27-2013, 07:58 AM
I don't know it, but I may have seen it. Hints, please?

Earniel
03-28-2013, 06:45 AM
Mkay, I see another hint is necessary. :) The speaker of this quote doesn't say much but is present in many scenes throughout the story of Beren and Lúthien.

sounds like something that Treebeard would say

Varnafindë
04-01-2013, 07:23 PM
In the first 7 lines there are only two mistakes: Twice you say 'A rowan', and in both cases the 'A' is wrong.

In the last 2 lines, 'you' and 'about' are wrong.

Otherwise the text is correct.
And although this does indeed sound like something that Treebeard would say, he is not the speaker.

Line 4: "smile" is wrong
Line 6: "ring" is wrong
Line 8: "now" and "gilded" are wrong

The second half of the second name is correct.
The first halves of the second and third names each have one letter wrong.

I think the occasion is when the last king of Arnor is up north with the "snow-people" - the Forochel??? - and they advise him not to go straight back by boat, but spend the winter with them. (He insists to leave, and perishes with the ship ...)

So the speaker would be some kind of Forochel leader - if I remember the name of the people rightly ...

It sure was tough to type in! ;) Correct on the speaker.

And yes - I thought it'd be fun to toss something out from the territory the new movie covers. :) The long ones are fun to solve too, aren't they?

It is fun indeed :)

Could the speaker be Frodo talking about the hobbits climbing a tree in the Old Forest to find their bearings?

Hmm...
