Beren, perhaps?

Valandil
01-19-2011, 07:26 PM
No - not Beren.

It might be too early for this, but do you guys want a hint of any kind? :)

Midge
01-20-2011, 12:34 PM
I was going to go with some kind of obvious answer, like a dwarf, like Thorin?

Valandil
01-20-2011, 01:08 PM
No - not Thorin. :)

Taniquetil
01-20-2011, 08:03 PM
Sauron keeps sticking in my mind for some reason:confused:

NO! way to early for hints!

Valandil
01-21-2011, 01:08 AM
No - not Sauron.

And I like that spirit - about not wanting the hints yet! :)

Taniquetil
01-21-2011, 12:41 PM
Well here's an obvious one that I don't think anyone's guessed yet: FEANOR!

Valandil
01-21-2011, 03:49 PM
No - not Feanor. :)

Earniel
01-21-2011, 04:03 PM
Eh, there are far too many instances in Tolkien's work were such a phrase might have been said. :p

But Taniquetil's guess gave me an idea... Fram to the dwarves that wanted Scatha's hoard back?

Valandil
01-21-2011, 06:13 PM
Fram it was! (and actual 'jewels' they were not - but dragon's teeth)

Your turn, Earniel! :)

Earniel
01-21-2011, 09:00 PM
I wouldn't mind getting dragon teeth, they sound kind of neath. But I can see how the dwarves would not have thought them jewels indeed. :D

Will put a new quote up tomorrow.

Earniel
01-22-2011, 07:57 AM
"A_/l_s_/I/_n_e_s_a_d/_h_/w_/h_v_/w_i_e_/!/T_i_/i_/t_e/_n_i_g/.

"At last I understand why we have waited! This is the ending.

Varnafindë
01-22-2011, 10:47 AM
day only shall be beloved, but night

Earniel
01-22-2011, 12:17 PM
"For" is wrong, but all the rest is correct. So only one word and the speaker. :)

Varnafindë
01-22-2011, 06:15 PM
'Now' instead of 'for'.
And I recognize the quote, but cannot for the life of me remember where I recognize it from.
Should click eventually, though ...

Valandil
01-22-2011, 07:24 PM
It was Frodo who said it. On - or soon after - the wedding day of Arwen and Aragorn.

Earniel
01-23-2011, 06:26 AM
All correct. Your turn again, Val. :)

Varnafindë
01-25-2011, 06:21 AM
"went away to be destroyed" might perhaps be
"sent away to be destroyed"?

Valandil
01-25-2011, 08:51 AM
Good start Midge. I'll bold those words that are incorrect - and underline Varnafinde's change (which was correct):

"His /_o_b_/will be growing, even as he/_p_a_/here.
/His eye is now straining toward us,
/blind/_l_o_t/to all else that is moving.
/So we must keep it. Therein lies all our hope.
This, then is my/_o_n_e_/./We have not the Ring.
/It/w_s_o_/o_/great/_o_l_/in his/_e_n/sent away to be destroyed/,
/l_s_/i_/d_s_r_y/_s/./Without it we cannot be/f_r_e/_e_e_t/_i_/f_r_e/.
/But we must at all/_o_t_/keep his eye from his/_r_e/_e_i_/.
We cannot achieve victory by arms, but by arms we can give the Ring-bearer his only chance, frail though it be."

Varnafindë
01-25-2011, 12:05 PM
even as we speak here.

In wisdom or great folly it has been sent away to be destroyed,
lest it destroy us. Without it we cannot by force detect his force.
But we must at all costs

Valandil
01-25-2011, 02:23 PM
And now... for a rhyming rhesponse... :p

adds correct,
except 'detect'.

:)

Varnafindë
01-25-2011, 05:53 PM
reject?
I'm not sure it makes sense, but then again nor did detect ;)

Valandil
01-25-2011, 08:54 PM
No - not 'reject' either. :)

I believe we have 6 words and the speaker left to solve...

Varnafindë
01-25-2011, 11:23 PM
"His /_o_b_/will be growing, even as we speak here.
His eye is now straining toward us,
blind/_l_o_t/to all else that is moving.
So we must keep it. Therein lies all our hope.
This, then is my/_o_n_e_/./We have not the Ring.
In wisdom or great folly it has been sent away to be destroyed,
lest it destroy us. Without it we cannot by force defeat his force.
But we must at all costs keep his eye from his/_r_e/_e_i_/.
We cannot achieve victory by arms, but by arms we can give the Ring-bearer his only chance, frail though it be."

Valandil
01-26-2011, 01:09 AM
'defeat' is right! Five more words and a speaker. :)

Taniquetil
01-26-2011, 04:30 PM
this then is my counsel?

Valandil
01-26-2011, 09:10 PM
Yes - 'counsel' is correct. :)

Taniquetil
01-28-2011, 06:31 PM
"His doubt will be growing, even as we speak here"

One more:)

Midge
01-28-2011, 11:32 PM
"His doubt will be growing, even as we speak here.
His eye is now straining toward us,
blind almost to all else that is moving.
So we must keep it. Therein lies all our hope.
This, then is my counsel . We have not the Ring.
In wisdom or great folly it has been sent away to be destroyed,
lest it destroy us. Without it we cannot by force defeat his force.
But we must at all costs keep his eye from his true/_e_i_/.
We cannot achieve victory by arms, but by arms we can give the Ring-bearer his only chance, frail though it be."

Wow, true took me a long time. I didn't think that Sauron was into irie or liked the Crüe. :D

Oh, and I'll guess Aragorn for the speaker.

EDIT: OH, SNAP! Peril.

Valandil
01-29-2011, 12:06 AM
All additional word solves are correct - including 'peril'.

Speaker is not Aragorn - so the speaker is the only part that remains unsolved. :)

Varnafindë
01-29-2011, 07:05 AM
If not Aragorn, then perhaps Gandalf?

Valandil
01-29-2011, 09:35 AM
Yes - it was Gandalf. Your turn, Varnafinde! :)

Speaker: Bilbo Baggins! :)

Varnafindë
01-29-2011, 11:03 PM
'bery' in the last line is not correct.
Everything else is correct, and Bilbo Baggins is indeed the speaker. :)
Three words to go.

and yet I grudge it not."

S: The dude who brought Aragorn the standard from Arwen - I forgot his name. Starts with an H, no?

Valandil
02-05-2011, 05:22 PM
Quote is correct - except for two words in the second line: 'but' and 'barrels'

Aikanáro
02-05-2011, 06:16 PM
'borders'?

Valandil
02-05-2011, 06:19 PM
Yes - 'borders' is correct. Had to keep those books safe, you know! ;)

Varnafindë
02-05-2011, 06:33 PM
our long labour

Valandil
02-06-2011, 12:10 AM
Yes - 'our' is correct. Quote is now solved. Speaker anyone? :)

(Midge - I think it's acceptable to look up the name of a person you're thinking of in some other location than the place the quote is take from - if you want to try your person)

EllethValatari
02-06-2011, 06:12 PM

Valandil
02-07-2011, 12:31 AM
Halbarad is correct! Your turn, EV! :)

Valandil
02-07-2011, 10:41 PM
Elleth - I thought it might be your first. Stick with it. On the opening post, there are some hints, along with the rules of how we try to post these. Take a look at those, they might be helpful. For one, if you didn't do this, it actually turns out to be easier to type in the entire quote - with the slashes instead of spaces - and then go back over and replace every other letter with an underscore. :)

"Therefore I say that we will go on,
and this /d_o_/ I add: the deed that we shall do shall be the
master of song until the last days of Arda."

Valandil
02-07-2011, 10:49 PM
Oh wait - that other word is 'doom'?

And instead of 'master' - how about 'matter'?

And then - is the speaker Feanor?

EllethValatari
02-08-2011, 12:26 AM
Oh wait - that other word is 'doom'?

And instead of 'master' - how about 'matter'?

And then - is the speaker Feanor?

Yes and yes! Nice work-I'll have to find a harder one next time! :thumb:

I did post the whole quote at first-I was referring to how fast you all respond! I didn't want to keep you waiting! ;)

Valandil
02-08-2011, 08:53 AM
Don't worry... I'm the one who keeps everyone waiting! :p

Well... let's see now. I'll bold your incorrect words:

"Then/are/_/s_r_n_e/_o_p_n_/,/there/_e_c_m_r_/.
/S_o_t/_e_/and/_o_d_y/_h_y/_r_/,

Wrong words bolded:

"They are as _r_n_e/_o_p_n_/,/these/_e_c_m_r_/. /Stout men and lordly they are, and the Riders of Rohan look/_l_o_t/_s/_o_s/_e_i_e/them/; now they are/_r_m/men/o_/f_c_/,/w_r_/like/w_a_h_r_d/_o_k_/f_r/_h_/m_s_/p_r_/,
/even as Aragorn/_i_s_l_/;/and they are/s_l_n_."

I have also underlined a part where you ran two words together (lost a '/' slash)

Galenavar
02-09-2011, 11:41 AM

Valandil
02-09-2011, 02:40 PM
All those solves are correct, Galenavar! :)

Anyone know the speaker? Or want to continue on with the word search?

Midge
02-09-2011, 08:31 PM
RAR! And I was RIGHT too, man!

"They are a strange company, these newcomers.
Stout men and lordly they are,
and the Riders of Rohan look almost as dogs beside them;
For they are grim men of face,
worn like weathered rocks for the most part,
even as Aragorn himself; and they are silent."

That word "almost" is really not easy to get, is it?

Gimli

Whew. That was REALLY hard work. I'm off to the Teacup for a bit of refreshment.

Valandil
02-09-2011, 08:43 PM
Not quite done yet though. You're all correct (including speaker), except: "dogs" :)

EllethValatari

Valandil

Midge
02-16-2011, 12:28 AM
Well, technically what counts is simply the last piece. A lot of the time we can figure out the quote from the context of the other words, but the speaker is lost to us, so it is the last piece. But it isn't always so.

However, Val did get the last piece - the word "good". I'm just missing all these good ol' quotes. I love seeing this thread revived. If you like Narnia and quoting, head to the LEWIS forum and give that quote game thread a good bump! *goes to make sure there's a quote waiting*

Valandil
02-16-2011, 11:51 AM
Yes - all it takes is the last piece. The speaker can be the first part guessed, but whoever solves the last piece earns the right to go next. :)

I tried to pull up one to be a little more challenging, but the spared letters seem like they're going to make it easier than I had hoped. We'll see though. Sometimes those we think will be easy are hard and vice-verse - and sometimes the least expected words give great difficulty.

After the Valandil-Midge cross-post, we are left with this:

The Valar! They have forsaken you and they hold men in scorn.
What use to look westward across the endless Sea to a dying sunset in the West? There is but one Vala with whom we have to do, and that is Morgoth.
And if in the end we cannot overcome him at least we can hurt him and hinder him. For victory is victory however small, nor is its worth only from what flows from it.
But it is expedient also. Secrecy is/_o_/ finally possible, arms are the only wall against Morgoth (sorry about that:o) If you do nothing to halt him all Beleriand will fall under his shadow before many years are passed and then one by one he will smoke you out of your earths and what then?
A pitiable (sorry again, it is amazing that Midge came up with "patriable" to fill the void, and that Valandil figured it out with the extra letter!) remnant will fly south and west to cower on the shores of the Sea caught between Morgoth and Osse ( I hoped to keep you guessing a bit longer on that one!)
Better then to win a /_i_e/ of glory though it be shortlived for the end will be no worse.

Only two pesky little words left, and the speaker:D

Turin it certainly was! which (correct me if I'm wrong) makes it your turn Valandil!
Now that it's all over, I do have a question. That particular quote is out of The Children of Hurin , rather than the books listed at the beginning. But I figured that if you allowed quotes out of Unfinished Tales , CoH would be OK. Was I correct?

Midge
03-07-2011, 10:50 PM
This one I don't know. It's funny because I thought I'd recognize quotes from Turin, having just finished reading that whole story not 6 months ago, from the Silmarillion AND UT. I guess in that case, it was a disadvantage, because I didn't realize you were using something that I hadn't read after I had ruled out the speaker.

We might check the Loremasters' quote game (http://entmoot.com/showthread.php?t=14739) to see if CoH is included in that list.

Edit: CoH IS included in the list for the Loremasters' quote game, so this quote should have gone on that thread. I'm not sure where they are at the moment, whether they're waiting for a quote to be solved or a quote to be posted. Posted is my guess, because they're pretty far down in the list.

Edit: Yes, they're waiting on a post, and I was actually the one who solved the quote, but I know absolutely nothing about the HoM or CoH - haven't read them hardly and only own one HoM. If you have more CoH or HoM quotes and would like to revive that thread with a new quote, go right ahead, Tani.

"Soil" (6th line) is wrong.
"ere" in "dark ere" (9th line down) is wrong.
"well" in "him well before me" (13th line down) is wrong.
And "made" in "Gandalf made" (last line) is wrong.

Gandalf does not "make"! Who are you people?

"Swift" and "making him walk" are the missing pieces. I believe that G. was the first to get the last pieces, although Varna's add was technically correct also.

G., it's your turn!

(I shorten your name because I'm guaranteed to spell it wrong... hope that's okay!)

Galenavar

Mwaha! Sweet. Quote will be coming soon...

- and you can shorten my name however you like. :-)

Midge
04-05-2011, 08:19 PM
Well, if I were to shorten to just one syllable (ex: "Val" for "Valandil"), you would be called "Gal" and I think you're a guy (I've had issues with this before and there's really no way to fix it except to come out and ask... :D).

On an entirely different note, I'll give an Entmoot point (or maybe two) to the person who can tell me where the following quote comes from (and yes, this technically breaks the rules of this thread, since it's not from LOTR, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion or the UT, but I'm not making you guess the quote):

"And in that hour, he drank deep of the chilled waters of Frigidaire. Never had there been, nor will there ever be a thirst so great in mortal man. And the count of the water was very great, greater than many mighty men are wont to drink even in thirsts most dire. But in the drinking thereof his brow was dried, his tongue was made wet, and a great sleep fell upon him."

Count Comfect

Isn't that Bored of the Rings?

Midge
04-06-2011, 06:24 PM
Quite possibly, though I doubt it. :D

My husband had been in the middle of reading The Silmarillion - to be more correct, he finished listening to it on audiobook.

This gem came to me in a text after he finished mowing one day, followed by instructions to "read it in my epic voice".

Both "positions" and "appointing" are incorrect and the placement of the letters is correct in the word beginning with "a".

and speaking now in a softer voice. 'I said we, for we it may be, if you
will join with me. A new Power is rising. Against it the old allies and

Numenor. This then is one choice before you, before us. We may join with
that Power. It would be Wise, Gandalf. There is nope that way. Its victory

Val, what on earth is a "hobity"?

Also I never thought that word would be the catch. One word left!

Sauruman making an effort to connect with Gandalf on 'those little people' who live in the Shire. He was pretty close, in my version. :p

Yes - often a word that we don't expect to cause much problem really throws people. Lots of times I think it's the vowels. When the remnants of a word are principally consonants - or even mixed - it's a lot easier. But when it's mostly vowels left, it's hard to fill in the right consonants at each place. :)

Yes, because instead of only having 5 or 8 choices, you have 24! Well, 23. Because there's no "u" I'm pretty sure you can rule out any "q"s. :D Keep trying! I'm sure you all know this word - as in you have heard it before and know what it means. It's not an unknown like one of those Elvish words or one of those outdated words...

I am spring-boarding completely off Beren3000's post:

"False hopes are more dangerous than fears,
and they will not help us farm this winter.
I wasted my time, though the hours seemed pressing.
But all such things are short-lived;
and the _o_ in the aging is their only true end, I guess.
And now I might as well give you back your gift."
