Correct! :)

Valandil
10-20-2009, 03:51 PM
"But dost thou not now remember, Kementari, that thy thought
sang not always alone? Did not thy thought and mine meet also,
so that we took wing together /_i_e/_r_a_/b_r_s/_h_t/_o_r/ above
the clouds? That Ulmo shall come to be by the /_e_d/ of Iluvatar,
and before the children awake there shall go forth high /_i_g_/
like the kind who /E_g_e_/o_/t_e/_o_d_/o_/t_e/_e_t."

Beren3000

"like great birds that soar above the clouds" ?

Varnafindë
10-21-2009, 12:15 PM
Together you've got the first three lines all correct :)

Ulmo in the 4th line is wrong
high in the 5th line is wrong
kind who in the 6th line are wrong

Not bad! ;)

Valandil
10-21-2009, 01:14 PM
"But dost thou not now remember, Kementari, that thy thought
sang not always alone? Did not thy thought and mine meet also,
so that we took wing together like great birds that soar above
the clouds? That also shall come to be by the seed of Iluvatar,
and before the children awake there shall go forth with kings
like the /_i_d/ the Eagles of the woods of the West."

Doesn't exactly sound right altogether, but maybe I slipped a few more correct words in on you.

Valandil
10-21-2009, 11:30 PM
Oops - more likely, '...with wings like the wind...'

Varnafindë
10-22-2009, 02:39 PM
Quite a few more correct words, indeed! :)
And you're right about wings rather than kings :D

Still, 'seed' in line 4 is wrong, and 'woods' in line 6 is wrong.

So we're down to:
"But dost thou not now remember, Kementari, that thy thought
sang not always alone? Did not thy thought and mine meet also,
so that we took wing together like great birds that soar above
the clouds? That also shall come to be by the /_e_d/ of Iluvatar,
and before the children awake there shall go forth with wings
like the wind the Eagles of the /_o_d_/ of the West."

And then we need the speaker.

Midge
10-22-2009, 04:03 PM
deed of Iluvatar?
(on that same note, foods? goods? moods? of the west... :D Just being silly, I know.)

Lords of the West?

Varnafindë
10-23-2009, 10:46 PM
'deed' is not correct - but 'Lords of the West' is correct :)

I'll pick "need" for now. "... the need of Iluvatar."

Varnafindë
10-26-2009, 07:01 PM
You picked the wrong one. But the correct one is there in your list also, ready to be picked ... ;)

Midge
10-26-2009, 08:47 PM
... lead?

Varnafindë
10-27-2009, 01:11 PM
Unfortunately not ...

I repeat the text for the new page.

"But dost thou not now remember, Kementari, that thy thought
sang not always alone? Did not thy thought and mine meet also,
so that we took wing together like great birds that soar above
the clouds? That also shall come to be by the /_e_d/ of Iluvatar,

like the wind the Eagles of the Lords of the West."

The speaker hasn't been found yet.

Count Comfect
10-27-2009, 01:27 PM
seed?

Varnafindë
10-27-2009, 01:36 PM
No, 'seed' and 'deed' and 'need' were guessed on the previous page, and none of them is the right word.

Midge

Is it head? I'm so confused. None of these sound like they fit there!

Midge
11-06-2009, 05:02 PM
I think I might look this up, to keep it going. Princess Varna! Look and see if I'm right or wrong!

Varnafindë
11-06-2009, 06:00 PM
Sorry I didn't see it the first time ...

'head' isn't right, but you're very close ... and the right word is there on your list.

Midge
11-06-2009, 06:18 PM
I can't make any of them make sense... I'm slowly going away and away from sense.

heed?

Varnafindë
11-07-2009, 07:21 AM
Glad to see that you've come back to your senses :D

'heed' it is! :)

Now we only need the speaker - might be easier than that pesky last word ...

Midge
11-09-2009, 10:18 AM
No clue. If it's from Sil or UT, I'm probably never going to get it.

I'll guess, though. Is it ... morgoth? Or whatever his name was before it was morgoth... Mortar? :D

Varnafindë
11-09-2009, 02:33 PM
If it's from Sil or UT, I'm probably never going to get it.
I'm afraid it is from one of those ...

I'll guess, though. Is it ... morgoth? Or whatever his name was before it was morgoth... Mortar? :D

Fair guess, but no. You mean Melkor ;) - but it wasn't him.

Midge
11-09-2009, 04:29 PM
Yeah... that guy. I am not even sure I own UT. It sounds like some kind of elf talking to some other kind of elf. I don't remember very many old elves' names, except for the ones in LOTR, or like.. Feanor and Finrod, etc. Feanor's the only one I know what he did. It's like a history class. If I were taking a history class in ME, I'd totally fail it.

I feel silly making a guess because I literally have no definite idea. Uh... Galadriel?

Earniel
11-10-2009, 06:29 AM
Manwë?

(If so, Midge can take the quote if she wants, since she did all the work for it.)

Midge
11-10-2009, 12:18 PM
Psh. Everyone else did MOST of the work. I've been doing GUESSwork to finish the quote. :D

Varnafindë
11-10-2009, 04:56 PM
It sounds like some kind of elf talking to some other kind of elf.

It might sound like "some kind of elf", but it's more like one level above that - it's one Vala talking to another Vala.

And Eärniel is right that it is Manwë (who is talking to Yavanna, also called Kementári, who possibly created the Ents).

Eärniel then has the right to bestow the honor and labor of doing the next quote game upon someone else :p

Midge
11-10-2009, 05:15 PM
Some kind of being higher than an elf talking to some other kind of being higher than an elf. If I'd paid more attention in my Tolkien history book, I would have known that Yavanna was called Kementári.

If Earn wants me to do the quote, I would be honored. I simply wanted credit to be given where it was due (as in... to all the other people who figured out the meat of the quote).

Earniel
11-11-2009, 07:39 AM
If you want to do the next quote, Midge, be my guest. :)

Good solves Varnafinde (I think). If your's are correct, it's 'on our travels'

I can't place this quote at all though - so I'm not coming up with a speaker. It sounds like it might be hobbity, but I'm not sure...

Midge
12-01-2009, 06:05 PM
It was when they went into Bree. All the people shrank back from them and they couldn't figure out why till they realized it was how they were dressed. I think that's it. I won't guess cuz you all worked on the quote and you can try it.

Edit: It might also have been when the men of Isengard didn't just attack them in Hobbiton or Bywater or wherever that was.

Note: It must have been in Bree because there were four hobbits, and the speaker mentioned "the FIVE of us". That includes Gandalf, who left the hobbits to go see Tom Bombadil and wasn't in Hobbiton.

GrayMouser
12-06-2009, 05:04 AM
Yep, it's in Bree on the way home. The speaker is Gandalf, talking to Barliman.

Midge

Oh. My turn? I wasn't trying to guess, but if the answer has been given... *hmm*

Midge
12-14-2009, 10:32 PM
Okay, fine. I figured someone would pipe up, but since they haven't, I'll move the thread along. Any objections and we'll just ignore my quote, good?

Thanks Midge. You sure have been good about keeping this thread moving. :)

The Warden of the Houses of Healing?

"give heed to rhymes"

Seems like it wasn't actually the Warden (though I'm not sure). Was it some other lore master or herb-lore master?

Thanks Midge. You sure have been good about keeping this thread moving. :)

I sure like playing this game! It makes me sad that the Narnia Quote game is slightly abandoned. *tear*

This is the so-far correctly guessed quote, with incorrect guesses bolded. I'll have to check when I get home this evening to make sure, as I don't have my book with me right now, but I THINK that is right. Disclaimer: It may not be, so don't sue me if it isn't.

I don't know if this is giving you guys trouble, or if it's just too easy, and you don't want to solve immediately and take the next turn. ;)

But... I like to see it all come together (and remove those pesky slash marks '/'), so here's a post of what the partly-solved quote looks like now:

"Don't be /p_e_i_e/, and don't worry!
You will have to manage without /_o_k_t-_a_d_e_c_i_f_/,

12-18-2009, 12:42 PM
Well.. .the other words I can't think of. "as for a"?

My speaker guess is Gloin.

Valandil

The words are right, but the speaker is not Gloin.

One word and the speaker remain. :)

Varnafindë
12-19-2009, 09:40 AM
Some of the trouble was to keep track of what has been solved and what hasn't - wouldn't there be two words left? Or has /p_e_i_e/ also been solved?
I think that /_a_/, is /hat/,
And I think that Gandalf is the speaker.

Midge
12-19-2009, 04:46 PM
I have no idea as to that first word. Is it Dwalin?

Valandil
12-19-2009, 05:57 PM
Varnafinde - you're right... the 'p' word was not yet solved either. Sorry about that. You're also right that the other word is 'hat'.

Speaker - Gandalf was wrong, but Midge is correct that the Dwarf speaker was Dwalin.

So NOW... just one word. '/p_e_i_e/'

It's harder when they're mostly vowels. But let's see how you do. :)

Midge

No. I didn't leave out a letter. I think we've got all the words except that one. Uno momento...

Well, you know me. When I can't think of the real word, sometimes you just need inspiration! Speaker: There's a prince from a southern kingdom, Named something like Amroth, or Imril or something that always has sounded elvish to me. Is it him? I'll look up his name (but not the quote) asap.

Varnafindë
01-21-2010, 05:03 PM
Do you mean Imrahil? I believe he is Prince of Dol Amroth, and it is said that there is Elvish blood in his line.

If it is correct, you are entitled to the next quote, though - I wouldn't have thought of him if you hadn't pointed him out.

Valandil
01-21-2010, 05:13 PM

Varnafindë

Yes - it was Boromir, as they were dealing with Caradhras!

Imrahil. I tried to post it yesterday when I remembered it, but apparently entmoot+the LG NV2 does not mix well.

Varnafindë

Valandil has corrected your wrong guesses and added some new guesses, and the whole quote is now correct.

Yes, Faramir is the speaker - if Imrahil is Finuilas' brother, then indeed he is Faramir's uncle, and Imrahil's daughter Lothiriel, the future Queen of Rohan, is Faramir's cousin.

Fate has not been kinder to him than he deserves.

Sounds like Gandalf.

All is right, except for serene, which I've replaced. Speaker is not Gandalf.

Are some of the missing words 'strong', 'worse' and 'him'?

Varnafindë

And if so, the last word, 'awaits'?

What about Aragorn as the speaker?

I can't really say whether it's particularly hard.

So we'll all have to wait until tomorrow when I can look it up :D

Valandil

Probably punishment - since technically, I did solve it by looking it up (though 'looking it up' was not my purpose) :)

Might be a day or two - but I'll try to keep it to that.

Midge
03-26-2010, 12:01 AM
I was right! I love it when I'm right, but unfortunately, what I was right about was that I couldn't think of it. I was correct in my guesses that it was "ou" and "le", but I kept getting stuck on a "s" or "t" where the "b" was supposed to be.

So I was right: I feel extremely silly about not getting it.

I don't think we've given the speaker - but it's Gandalf.

Valandil
04-13-2010, 07:13 PM
The speaker is Gandalf.

Most solved words are correct - two wrong ones, both in the third line; "had" and "spying".

In the fourth line (DPR), I think you mean, "In which..." - not "I which..." - as has already been solved above. "In" is correct, of course.

I guess that leaves just three words? Nice work everyone! :)

Varnafindë
04-14-2010, 03:00 AM
'saying' rather than 'spying'?

Valandil
04-14-2010, 07:38 AM
Yes - 'saying' is right - and OOPS - 'to' and 'that' are also wrong in that same line - and I left out another 'that' in the line in my first posting. :o Sorry about all that - I guess I was rushing when I posted and when I checked.

So here's where the quote stands now:

"Behind that there was something else at work,
beyond any design of the ring-maker.
I /_a_/ put it /_o/_l_i_e_/t_a_/ by saying that Bilbo
was meant to find the Ring, and not by its maker.
I which case you also were meant to have it.
and that may be an encouraging thought."
