/would/come out of the/gates/: all the/halls/within must be/filled/with his/foul/reek/."

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-02-2009, 04:44 PM
Good job so far. Just one correction, I think:

That does not /_r_v_/ it, though I don't doubt you are right. But he might be/_o_e/away/_o_e/_i_e/, or he/_i_h_/by lying/_u_/o_/t_e/_o_n_a_n/-/_i_e/_e_p_n_/w_t_h/, and still I expect /s_o_e_/and/_t_a_s/would come out of the gates: all the halls within must be filled with his foul reek.

That does not prove it, though I don't doubt you are right. But he might be done away some time

Is any of that right?

The Dread Pirate Roberts

prove, some, time = correct
done is not

/gone/ away
lying /out/of/the/

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-03-2009, 05:40 PM
Almost all correct. Not "of" there.

That does not prove it, though I don't doubt you are right. But he might be gone away some time, or he/_i_h_/by lying out/o_/the/_o_n_a_n/-/_i_e/_e_p_n_/w_t_h/, and still I expect /s_o_e_/and/_t_a_s/would come out of the gates: all the halls within must be filled with his foul reek.

Varnafindë

he/_i_h_/by lying out/o_/the/
'might' and 'on'?
And should 'by' be 'be'?

Earniel
04-03-2009, 06:28 PM
"That does not prove it, though I don't doubt you are right. But he might be gone away some time, or he might be lying out on the mountain-side keeping watch, and still I expect smokes and steams would come out of the gates: all the halls within must be filled with his foul reek."

Hmm, lets see how many of the thirteen Dwarves are tried before the right one is guessed.... :D

Dwalin?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-04-2009, 07:50 PM
Earnil has the quote completed. Sorry for not catching the by/be mistake.

But it isn't Dwalin.

Valandil
04-07-2009, 08:21 AM
The big cheese... Thorin?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-07-2009, 09:21 AM
Nope. It's getting narrowed down now, though. IIRC, only a few of the dwarves actually spoke much.

Valandil

Varnafindë

errand

Earniel
04-09-2009, 02:43 PM
Turgon?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-09-2009, 03:05 PM
If "errand" is correct, and I think it is, them my "came" should probably be "have" instead. Still stumped on that last word, but I have a guess about the speaker.

Varnafindë
04-09-2009, 03:34 PM
If "came" should be "have", then "on" should probably be "an" as well.
Also we've lost one of Valandil's words:
am/an/outlaw/alone/ (alone rather than along)

If this is correct, then I think we only need the speaker.

Valandil
04-09-2009, 11:28 PM
Varnafinde - you are correct on all those final quote solves:

"Nay, I am an escaped thrall,
and I am an outlaw alone in an empty land.
But I have an errand to Turgon the Hidden King.
Know you by what road I may find him?"

Speaker is the only piece remaining.

Annatar

Maeglin?

Valandil
04-16-2009, 08:14 AM
It was not Maeglin.

But welcome to Entmoot, Annatar. And welcome to the Quote Game. :)

No - not Voronwe. :)

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-22-2009, 03:58 PM

Oh all right. Hurin.

Valandil
04-22-2009, 11:13 PM
No - not Hurin. :)

Earniel
04-23-2009, 04:24 AM
Ah, Tuor. I just re-read that part last night.

Valandil
04-23-2009, 08:13 AM
So... you peeked! :p

Tuor is correct. Your turn. :)

Earniel
04-23-2009, 02:11 PM
Purely by accident, I assure you. :p I was just researching the Gates of Gondolin for fanfic purposes. (Oh, why, why didn't Tolkien finished this narrative?!)

name, clear, truth?

Earniel
04-24-2009, 08:11 PM
The quote's correct, now all we need is the speaker.

Valandil
04-24-2009, 08:22 PM
Was THIS one said by Voronwe?

Earniel
04-24-2009, 08:31 PM

Ecthelion it is! Your turn again, Val.

Valandil
04-27-2009, 11:25 PM

All correct DPR - your turn! :)

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-29-2009, 11:08 AM
It may be awhile. I'm moving this week. If someone wants to take the turn, that's cool with me. Otherwise, it will probably be Thursday morning before I can post a quote, and then I might not be able to keep up with the guesses...

But I'll try.

Varnafindë
05-02-2009, 03:12 AM
Changing my own suggestion here, as I suddenly realised what it should be:
And no /wonder/ they’re /queer/

Should it be "right amid" ?

Now, who said that :o

Valandil
05-02-2009, 07:55 AM
Good work, Varnafinde! With the 'to', I kept thinking the next word was 'Gondor' or 'Mordor' - but that didn't make sense. :p

Was it Ted Sandyman who said this?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
05-04-2009, 07:59 PM
It is "no wonder" and it is "agin" and it isn't Ted Sandyman.

Good work so far. Now for the obscure speaker...

Valandil
05-05-2009, 07:48 AM
Oh - an obscure one? What was the one guy's name: Daddy Twofoot, or something like that?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
05-05-2009, 11:05 AM
You got it!

Valandil
05-05-2009, 10:55 PM
Really? OK... :p

When I got on last night, I was thinking of the Gaffer - but you mentioned that he was obscure. I was trying to think of the other hobbit there (or one of, if more than one). The first thing that came to mind was 'Daddy Twotoes' - but that didn't sound quite right, so I went on to bed. This morning, I thought of the other last name.

I'll try to post tomorrow. I'm up tonight studying for an important test I take tomorrow.

Elrond is correct - your turn! :)

Varnafindë
06-08-2009, 06:55 PM
Since Curufin hasn't posted for a while - I believe she's currenly taking a break - maybe someone else should do the next one?

Valandil
06-08-2009, 08:13 PM
Sounds good. Since I just had the previous - somebody else want to go? :)

The Dread Pirate Roberts

Varnafindë

A break from Tolkien?

Mostly a break from us - but she's taking a break from RPing Tolkien :(

I don't know whether anyone will be playing this during the summer, but I'll throw something out to you anyway:

Gildor Iglorion

(whew - this took some effort - I'm getting out of shape! :p )

The Dread Pirate Roberts
07-23-2009, 01:28 PM
Good job. One word left.

But it's not Gildor.

Valandil
07-23-2009, 08:11 PM
is it 'business'? (I don't often think of Elves being in 'business' :p )

is it an un-named member of the Wandering Elves?

Varnafindë
07-26-2009, 07:29 PM
Or an un-named Elf at Rivendell (in perhaps the Hall of Fire)?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
07-27-2009, 08:58 AM
It is 'business'.

It is an Elf in the Hall of Fire but he IS named, several times, yet most readers seem to have never heard of him. I didn't notice the name until the last time I read Fellowship (which was probably at least the 10th time).

Hint: /_i_d_r/

Varnafindë
07-27-2009, 10:25 AM
Lindir?
If so, I've heard more of him in fanfiction than in LotR ...

The Dread Pirate Roberts
07-27-2009, 11:33 AM
It is indeed Lindir.

I googled the name and was shocked by the number of results. Even images of the guy. He barely gets a mention by Tolkien yet manages a sort of cult following. Those wacky Elf fangirls. :p

Earniel
07-27-2009, 03:56 PM
That said, it's also an easily constructed good-sounding Elvish name. I had a Lindir somewhere in a fanfic, but changed it when I found out there was one for real when re-reading LoTR.

Varnafindë
07-27-2009, 08:05 PM
He is sometimes claimed to be the greatest singer after Maglor - I guess this is something the fangirls deduce from his name, because Tolkien never says so.

Since his name was the last answer we needed, I expect to be next, so here goes:

/T_/p_u_e_c_/s_m_/h_e_/m_s_/s_i_l/_e/_i_e_/./F_r/_e/_u_t/

I don't recognize the quote, but guesswork got me this:

To prudence some heed must still be given. For we must prepare a_a_n_t all chances, good as well as evil. For it may be that we shall triumph and while there is any hope of this, Mordor must be _r_t_c_e_

Close?

Varnafindë
07-28-2009, 04:20 AM
For it may be that we shall triumph and while there is any hope of this, Mordor must be _r_t_c_e_

In this sentence, 'For' and 'Mordor' are not correct. :(
Otherwise, everything you have completed is correct. :)

Earniel
07-28-2009, 07:29 AM
against?

Varnafindë
07-28-2009, 08:17 AM
It is indeed!
Not much left, now:

To prudence some heed must still be given. For we must prepare against all chances, good as well as evil. /_o_/,/ it may be that we shall triumph, and while there is any hope of this,/_o_d_r/ must be _r_t_c_e_ .

And the speaker.

Earniel
07-28-2009, 12:31 PM
Gondor must be protected?

The Dread Pirate Roberts
07-28-2009, 12:35 PM
Now, ???, protected.

Is that Gandalf?

Varnafindë
07-28-2009, 12:47 PM
All additions to the quote are correct, and we have the whole quote (which is taken from the middle of a paragraph):

'To prudence some heed must still be given. For we must prepare against all chances, good as well as evil. Now, it may be that we shall triumph, and while there is any hope of this, Gondor must be protected.'

The speaker is not Gandalf, though.

Valandil

The Dread Pirate Roberts
07-31-2009, 08:56 AM

07-31-2009, 10:49 PM

Varnafindë
07-31-2009, 11:10 PM
Nor Faramir - but you're getting hotter again.
Not as hot as someone else was, though.

Valandil
07-31-2009, 11:20 PM
Aragorn?

Varnafindë
08-01-2009, 12:10 AM
No, but even hotter ;)

Valandil
08-01-2009, 11:50 AM
Easy there... don't over-heat now. :p

Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth?

Varnafindë
08-01-2009, 04:31 PM
That's the full heat, Valandil! :D

Imrahil it is (and he was talking to Gandalf and Aragorn and others, which made those some hot guesses as well).

Yeah, but I'm reading the Silmarillion right now, and there are so many elves, that I can only keep a few from LOTR straight. Its difficult, man, Johnny Boy had quite a few of the little buggers running around.

After thinking about this - I'll award it to Beor, who got the last OTHER part.

The word JRRT uses is 'deson' - at least in both paperback editions I own (this is in 'Passing of the Grey Company' of LOTR). I don't know if it was an obscure word for 'door-ward' - or if indeed it was a typo for doors.

Is this what the rest of you have in your editions, if you look there?

Valandil
09-01-2009, 05:42 PM
Still correct on all solves. That leaves just two words.

I see now that I made a slight posting error - but it doesn't matter much. The start should be "Often is it seen..." instead of the "Often it is seen..." as I posted it. I must've mistransposed the quote initially. Sorry. :)

dangerous?

Valandil
09-03-2009, 12:09 AM
"dangerous" is correct - one word left. The quote stands like this:

"Often it is seen, that in dangerous /d_y_/ men will hide their chief treasures.
Yet I marvel at Elrond and your brothers; for though I have dwelt in this House from childhood, I have heard no word of you. How comes it that we have never met before? Surely your father has not kept you locked in his hoard?"

Four wrong words: 'white' in line 1, 'border' in line 3, 'swell it' in line 4.
You suspected two of them yourself ;)
The rest is fine :)

Valandil
09-08-2009, 07:38 AM
Of course... 'white' doesn't even fit. Here:

"It was a city, the chief city of Gondor, of which this was
only a fortress. For that is the ruin of Osgiliath on either
side of Anduin, which our enemies took and burned long ago.
Yet we won it back in the days of the youth of Denethor: not
to dwell in, but to hold as an outpost, and to /_e_u_l_/ the
/_r_d_e/ for the passage of our arms."

Beregond said it - and all corrections and additions are correct. :)

Only two words left.

Valandil
09-08-2009, 11:44 PM
Finally got something. Is it 'rebuild' and 'bridge'?

I didn't remember that in there, or that Gondor had plans to do it - if those words are correct. :)

Varnafindë
09-09-2009, 07:09 AM
The words are correct. :)

Whether Beregond is referring to Gondor's plans correctly, is a different question.
Perhaps it was rebuilt and broken down again later? I don't remember the details ...
