View Full Version : Quote Game-Part 8
Sister Golden Hair
11-17-2006, 09:11 AM
Here we go with part 8. The same rules apply as before.
Basically, you take a quote and remove every second letter, and put a slash between words. Whoever identifies the last element, be it quote, speaker, or both posts the next one.
example: A_l/_h_t/_s/_o_d/_o_s/_o_/g_i_t_r
answer: All that is gold does not glitter, Gandalf's letter (or Bilbo Baggins)
Anything from the books: The Hobbit, LOTR, the Silmarillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game.
Suggestions for posting:
Some gamers find this method best, fastest, easiest and most accurate. When you've found your quote, type it all in without blanks, simply using the '/' instead of a space, as well as before and after each punctuation mark. Just after a punctuation mark can be a convenient place for a carriage return, if the spacing looks good. After typing, check for spelling and to see that all the words are correct. Then go through and replace every other letter with an underscore '_' - this goes quickly if you use the 'forward arrow' key to advance, use the 'delete' key and then add the underscore where the letter was.
Oh - and we try our best to solve the quotes without looking them up.

Here's a 1000th post quote:

"Home! It smells like Elves!" ???
That fits, but I can't make sense of it...
Sam?
Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 01:37 PM
Home is wrong, the rest is right, but it is not Sam.
Midge
11-18-2006, 08:44 PM
uh... "hmmm"? Gimli?
"Hmph!" could work there too.. except for the spelling. I got stuck on Hmph for a while... then I had to get past it.
Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 09:12 PM
Hmmm is correct. Speaker is not Gimli, however.
Valandil
11-18-2006, 09:40 PM
Gollum?
Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 09:48 PM
It is not Gollum, no.
Valandil
11-18-2006, 09:51 PM
Not placing this one at all...
Frodo?
Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 10:50 PM
Not Frodo, no.
Valandil

Count Comfect

Not Shagrat, no.

Gorbag?
Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 08:36 PM
Not Gorbag. You've been getting progressively further away with pretty much every guess.
Valandil
11-19-2006, 08:39 PM
* re-checks first guess *
Merry?
Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 09:06 PM
No, but the right species again.
Valandil
11-19-2006, 09:14 PM
Pippin?
Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 09:31 PM
Nope. Still the right species though.
And if it's not Frodo, Sam, Merry, or Pippin...

Ah... er, well I was tired. :o And just trying to find out where it was going - so I tried whatever struck me without the words necessarily ringing a bell together. :p
I'm glad I can crack you up though. :)
Say - were you doing your avatar different for awhile?
I think I can solve now though:
"there" and "Where does it lead?" for unfinished parts.
Aragorn the speaker.
Earniel
11-21-2006, 09:04 AM
Say - were you doing your avatar different for awhile?
Yes, a field of poppies during the week around the 11th November, Armistice.
I think you 'cracked' the quote too! :p

"Speed now,"..."to your purpose"
maybe "do your purpose" although that sounds a little strange, huh?
Ooh, "fo your purpose" haha... :)
Valandil
11-22-2006, 09:50 PM
Eärniel - all correct but the "good"
Midge - "Speed now" and "to your purpose" are both correct adds.
Gildor Iglorion was not the speaker (if you recall, he didn't see them off). :)
I love that old expression, "Make haste while the Sun shines"! :p

Valandil
11-26-2006, 09:40 PM

I'm back - so the game is back on, with one word and the speaker left to solve.

No, for neither. Still need the speaker!
Midge

* "full" and "fell" both wrong for the one word in the middle of the next to last line.

EDIT:
Oops - I see I messed up with the second word, but the letters are correct - the placement of blanks is just wrong. Since it carried over to the rest of the quote, I'll leave it.

Since it's a new page, here's where we stand:
"Your oaths of faith to me /_o_/m_y/_r_a_/, but /_/m_s_/h_l_/m_/b_n_/.
/Y_t/_f/_h_r_/b_/a_y/_n/_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/o_/o_r/_u_s_/h_s/_o_/y_t/_a_l_n/,
/_/s_o_l_/f_n_/a_/l_a_t/_/f_w/_o/_o_l_w/_e/,
/_n_/s_o_l_/n_t/_o/_e_c_/a_/a/_e_g_r/_h_t/_s/_h_u_t/_r_m/_h_/g_t_s."
CC - your words were correct.
BB - your 'but' was, your 'not' is ambiguous - as it could conceivable fit into more than one place

Finrod?

Still lotsa words to go! :D

that's all i got. Aragorn?

Heehee... "I must hold my bone" :D
CC's words were correct, so that was "bond" - and his speaker "Finrod" is correct also. I see that I'd better update us (you guys should really try posting them this way :p ):
"Your oaths of faith to me you may break, but I must hold my bond.
Yet if there be any in /_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/ of our /_u_s_/ has not yet fallen,
I should find at least a few to follow me,
/_n_/s_o_l_/n_t/_o/_e_c_/a_/a/_e_g_r/_h_t/_s/_h_u_t/ from the gates."
You actually got quite a few more words Midge... nice job! :)

Valandil

I know Midge - and sorry for ribbing you. I know how words can get stuck in the mind in this game. We used to take great pride in throwing out things like that now and again though. Not all the time of course.
You've added some more right words:
"Your oaths of faith to me you may break, but I must hold my bond.
Yet if there be any /_n/_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/ of our /_u_s_/ has not yet fallen,
I should find at least a few to follow me,
and should not /_o/_e_c_/ as a beggar that is thrust from the gates."
That word isn't quite "house" - the "u" is in the wrong place for it.
EDIT: to add "beggar" and "thrust"
EDIT II: realized I had wrongly credited an "in" and restored it to the unsolved version. Sorry.

I'm not quite sure if I'm doing this right, I still need to read the instructions on the 1st page of this thread, so you please tell me if I am wrong/right.
ex, I figured out it wouldn't before I submitted it, so I'll use it as an example-of our just has not yet fallen.-will that work, or do yall want it different?
Valandil
02-23-2007, 12:44 AM
It'll probably be easiest if you start with the instructions - and if that doesn't make it clear enough, review a page or two of some quotes that were posted and solved.
Basically - the person who solves the last part of a quote (including naming the speaker) will post the next. They leave out every other letter, and put a slash "/" between words and punctuation marks. The quotes have to come from certain books - and books only ;) - which are: The Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. By "quotes" we mean, something a speaker in one of those books actually says.
Now - for your example, "just" wouldn't work, because the unsolved word has five letters - so there's another letter between the "u" and the "s".
Keep at it though - you'll get the hang of it. It's a great game. :)

"go"?
But "not" was also wrong in at least one place (the first possible occurrence) - so if you want to solve, YOU should try working a little harder. :p
"go" is correct.

Yes - I was trying to lure you back. I've covered LOTS of great quotes in my Sil readings the last several days. I plan to get a few others up in weeks to come. (there's plenty of other good FF quotes as well)
I won't try to finish up Midge's current quote, because tomorrow I leave for a week - so I don't want to stall out this game by being away while I'm in the thick of things. :)

It's been awhile, and I'd forgotten about the word.
Yes. It is woe and the speaker is not Eomer.

It's neither Imrahil nor the Master of the House of Healing.
