Here we go with part 8. The same rules apply as before.

Basically, you take a quote and remove every second letter, and put a slash between words. Whoever identifies the last element, be it quote, speaker, or both posts the next one.

example: A_l/_h_t/_s/_o_d/_o_s/_o_/g_i_t_r

answer: All that is gold does not glitter, Gandalf's letter (or Bilbo Baggins)

Anything from the books: The Hobbit, LOTR, the Silmarillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game.

Suggestions for posting:
Some gamers find this method best, fastest, easiest and most accurate. When you've found your quote, type it all in without blanks, simply using the '/' instead of a space, as well as before and after each punctuation mark. Just after a punctuation mark can be a convenient place for a carriage return, if the spacing looks good. After typing, check for spelling and to see that all the words are correct. Then go through and replace every other letter with an underscore '_' - this goes quickly if you use the 'forward arrow' key to advance, use the 'delete' key and then add the underscore where the letter was.

Oh - and we try our best to solve the quotes without looking them up.

Your turn, CC! :)

Count Comfect
11-17-2006, 07:16 PM
Here's a 1000th post quote:

H_m_/!/i_/s_e_l_/l_k_/e_v_s/!/

Valandil
11-18-2006, 01:25 AM
"Home! It smells like Elves!" ???

That fits, but I can't make sense of it...

Sam?

Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 01:37 PM
Home is wrong, the rest is right, but it is not Sam.

Midge
11-18-2006, 08:44 PM
uh... "hmmm"? Gimli?

"Hmph!" could work there too.. except for the spelling. I got stuck on Hmph for a while... then I had to get past it.

Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 09:12 PM
Hmmm is correct. Speaker is not Gimli, however.

Valandil
11-18-2006, 09:40 PM
Gollum?

Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 09:48 PM
It is not Gollum, no.

Valandil
11-18-2006, 09:51 PM
Not placing this one at all...

Frodo?

Count Comfect
11-18-2006, 10:50 PM
Not Frodo, no.

Valandil
11-19-2006, 01:43 AM
Shagrat?

Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 05:17 PM
Not Shagrat, no.

Valandil
11-19-2006, 07:47 PM
*wonders if he's in the right species now... and how many more of them he can come up with who might have smelled something elvish*

Gorbag?

Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 08:36 PM
Not Gorbag. You've been getting progressively further away with pretty much every guess.

Valandil
11-19-2006, 08:39 PM
* re-checks first guess *

Merry?

Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 09:06 PM
No, but the right species again.

Valandil
11-19-2006, 09:14 PM
Pippin?

Count Comfect
11-19-2006, 09:31 PM
Nope. Still the right species though.

And if it's not Frodo, Sam, Merry, or Pippin...

Midge
11-19-2006, 11:02 PM
bilbo?

Count Comfect
11-20-2006, 12:24 AM
*dingdingding* We have a winner!

Quick note - I only have a copy of the Hobbit with me, so...

Earniel
11-21-2006, 06:43 AM
Are you green with grass? Oh, Val, you crack me up! :D

"Hither shall the flowers of simbelmyne come never unto world's end. Nine mounds and seven/_h_r_/are now green with grass, and through all the long years he has lain at the door that he could not unlock. /_h_r_/d_e_/i_/l_a_/? Why would he pass? None shall ever know!"

Valandil
11-21-2006, 07:57 AM
Ah... er, well I was tired. :o And just trying to find out where it was going - so I tried whatever struck me without the words necessarily ringing a bell together. :p

I'm glad I can crack you up though. :)

Say - were you doing your avatar different for awhile?

I think I can solve now though:

"there" and "Where does it lead?" for unfinished parts.

Aragorn the speaker.

Earniel
11-21-2006, 09:04 AM
Say - were you doing your avatar different for awhile?
Yes, a field of poppies during the week around the 11th November, Armistice.

I think you 'cracked' the quote too! :p

Midge
11-22-2006, 02:59 PM
speaker... oh, who was it? it was the wood-elf that wasn't actually a wood-elf, just an elf they met in a wood.

Gildor!!! Inglorion, i mean.

Midge
11-22-2006, 03:04 PM
"Speed now,"..."to your purpose"

maybe "do your purpose" although that sounds a little strange, huh?

Ooh, "fo your purpose" haha... :)

Valandil
11-22-2006, 09:50 PM
Eärniel - all correct but the "good"

Midge - "Speed now" and "to your purpose" are both correct adds.

Gildor Iglorion was not the speaker (if you recall, he didn't see them off). :)

I love that old expression, "Make haste while the Sun shines"! :p

Midge
11-23-2006, 02:33 AM
Hold to your purpose

Tom Bombadil...

footsteps

Fine Guests

Valandil
11-23-2006, 06:34 AM
Those words are correct, Midge - except for "fine"

And Tom Bombadil was not the speaker.

Valandil
11-23-2006, 06:57 AM
I'm away for a few days, so if someone wants a little help, and then to post the next one:

last word = ???? / speaker = ???

EDIT: I'm back... continue. :p

Valandil
11-26-2006, 09:40 PM
*bump* - to give notice that I took out the "cloaked" answers.

I'm back - so the game is back on, with one word and the speaker left to solve.

Count Comfect
11-29-2006, 09:59 PM
S: Goldberry?

Valandil
11-29-2006, 10:17 PM
Goldberry is the correct speaker!

One word left, and it's a "f_i_" word... :)

Midge
12-04-2006, 01:48 AM
... fair?

Valandil
12-04-2006, 08:55 AM
"fair" is correct! Your turn, Midge! :)

Midge
12-04-2006, 11:22 PM

Oh - maybe "two dead men and two dead horses."??

Speaker... figures to be one of the Rohirrim: Grimbold?

Midge
12-05-2006, 12:14 AM
quote all right. speaker not grimbold!

Count Comfect
12-05-2006, 01:46 AM

12-05-2006, 02:18 AM
Oh - maybe "two dead men and two dead horses."??

*sings "two dead men and two dead horses and one white tree...." *

wait, that's not quite right ...

Valandil
12-05-2006, 08:17 AM
No - I think that was "one red arrow" Rian. :p

Was the speaker Eomer, by any chance?

Midge
12-05-2006, 11:34 PM
No, for neither. Still need the speaker!

Midge
12-08-2006, 12:30 AM
come on...

I'll give you a hint, if you want. The speaker is well-known, but rather unimportant in the story. :)

Valandil
12-08-2006, 12:33 AM
I'll throw out another guess (I really don't have my Rohirrim lesser characters straight :o And hope I don't guess someone who had already died at Helm's Deep :p ) ...

Hama?

Midge
12-11-2006, 12:11 AM
No. Keep trying!

Valandil
12-11-2006, 12:31 AM

You got the quote all solved - but the speaker was not Eomer. :)

Midge

Treebeard is the speaker

Midge
12-19-2006, 08:36 AM

Valandil
12-19-2006, 08:38 AM

Because! I continue feeling stupid...

Valandil
12-19-2006, 10:13 PM
Earniel - all correct, your turn. :)

Midge - don't worry about it... no matter how much you play this game, you always end up not seeing at first what later appears obvious - at least now and then.

Correct. That leaves only two words and the speaker. :)

Valandil
12-22-2006, 04:41 AM

I'm not so good on my sons of Feanor, so don't laugh if I get all confused here:

Valandil
12-26-2006, 08:11 PM

That leaves one word to go. Leaves... get it? ;)

Midge
12-27-2006, 02:04 PM
OOH, ooh, autumn! Am I right????

THe reason I did it that way was because I didn't figure any of them would be right. I was thinking, hoping for a "you're on the right track!"... didn't figure I'd be right, though!

Your quote was mostly correct, and the add of "between" and "race" were both correct - and Gandalf was the speaker.

Two words left to solve:
* "back" was wrong in the initial attempt.
* "full" and "fell" both wrong for the one word in the middle of the next to last line.

"I was not snet to beg any boon, but to seek /o_l_/the meaning of a riddle. Yet we are hard pressed, and the Sword of Elendil would be a help beyond our hope - if such a thing could indeed return out of the shadows of the past."

There - all good now - and Boromir was the speaker. Just one word left.

EDIT:

Oops - I see I messed up with the second word, but the letters are correct - the placement of blanks is just wrong. Since it carried over to the rest of the quote, I'll leave it.

not?

Valandil

Since it's a new page, here's where we stand:

"Your oaths of faith to me /_o_/m_y/_r_a_/, but /_/m_s_/h_l_/m_/b_n_/.
/Y_t/_f/_h_r_/b_/a_y/_n/_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/o_/o_r/_u_s_/h_s/_o_/y_t/_a_l_n/,
/_/s_o_l_/f_n_/a_/l_a_t/_/f_w/_o/_o_l_w/_e/,
/_n_/s_o_l_/n_t/_o/_e_c_/a_/a/_e_g_r/_h_t/_s/_h_u_t/_r_m/_h_/g_t_s."

CC - your words were correct.

BB - your 'but' was, your 'not' is ambiguous - as it could conceivable fit into more than one place

you may break, I must hold my bond. Yet if there be any...

Finrod?

Valandil

CC - correct on all additional words and speaker.

Still lotsa words to go! :D

that's all i got. Aragorn?

Valandil

Heehee... "I must hold my bone" :D

CC's words were correct, so that was "bond" - and his speaker "Finrod" is correct also. I see that I'd better update us (you guys should really try posting them this way :p ):

"Your oaths of faith to me you may break, but I must hold my bond.
Yet if there be any in /_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/ of our /_u_s_/ has not yet fallen,
I should find at least a few to follow me,
/_n_/s_o_l_/n_t/_o/_e_c_/a_/a/_e_g_r/_h_t/_s/_h_u_t/ from the gates."

You actually got quite a few more words Midge... nice job! :)

Midge
02-23-2007, 12:22 AM
whom the something of our something... I think it is like, courage of our fathers... or synonyms of that, cuz obviously, that doesn't fit.

and should not so ... as a meager that as ... ? I dunno. just random guesses.

haha.. of our house. I got that! oh, yeah.

It was just stuck in my head and wouldn't go away. i was also thinking bane...

Midge
02-23-2007, 12:30 AM
oh.
as a beggar that is thrust

Valandil
02-23-2007, 12:31 AM
I know Midge - and sorry for ribbing you. I know how words can get stuck in the mind in this game. We used to take great pride in throwing out things like that now and again though. Not all the time of course.

You've added some more right words:

"Your oaths of faith to me you may break, but I must hold my bond.
Yet if there be any /_n/_h_m/_h_/s_a_o_/ of our /_u_s_/ has not yet fallen,
I should find at least a few to follow me,
and should not /_o/_e_c_/ as a beggar that is thrust from the gates."

That word isn't quite "house" - the "u" is in the wrong place for it.

EDIT: to add "beggar" and "thrust"

EDIT II: realized I had wrongly credited an "in" and restored it to the unsolved version. Sorry.

I'm not quite sure if I'm doing this right, I still need to read the instructions on the 1st page of this thread, so you please tell me if I am wrong/right.
ex, I figured out it wouldn't before I submitted it, so I'll use it as an example-of our just has not yet fallen.-will that work, or do yall want it different?

Valandil
02-23-2007, 12:44 AM
It'll probably be easiest if you start with the instructions - and if that doesn't make it clear enough, review a page or two of some quotes that were posted and solved.

Basically - the person who solves the last part of a quote (including naming the speaker) will post the next. They leave out every other letter, and put a slash "/" between words and punctuation marks. The quotes have to come from certain books - and books only ;) - which are: The Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. By "quotes" we mean, something a speaker in one of those books actually says.

Now - for your example, "just" wouldn't work, because the unsolved word has five letters - so there's another letter between the "u" and the "s".

Keep at it though - you'll get the hang of it. It's a great game. :)

"go"?

But "not" was also wrong in at least one place (the first possible occurrence) - so if you want to solve, YOU should try working a little harder. :p

"go" is correct.

Yes - I was trying to lure you back. I've covered LOTS of great quotes in my Sil readings the last several days. I plan to get a few others up in weeks to come. (there's plenty of other good FF quotes as well)

I won't try to finish up Midge's current quote, because tomorrow I leave for a week - so I don't want to stall out this game by being away while I'm in the thick of things. :)

And - there's still a missing word, right? Is it "woe"...?? :)

Midge

It's been awhile, and I'd forgotten about the word.

Yes. It is woe and the speaker is not Eomer.

It's neither Imrahil nor the Master of the House of Healing.
