a) That's part of the correct name for the answer to part two

b) now you only need to answer, correctly, part one.

The Red Book of Westmarch?
What form... a book? Notes? I'm not sure what you mean. Unless you mean a diary.

Nurvingiel, you've got the answer to part two 100% correct. Truly one of our most savy participants.

Now that you know the form, think of the definition for the first part and you'll have your total answer.

Radagast The Brown
04-03-2004, 06:26 PM
Well... he record them in Rivendell, didn't he? And during his journey, too, I guess... if that what you wanted?

Spock
04-03-2004, 08:12 PM
Well finally, RTB, I'd almost given up hope.
Actually Radagast The Brown gets credit for a)=where
and Nurvingiel gets credit for b)=in what format.

you guys decide who posts the next question....personally I'd vote for Nurvingiel as that answer was more tricksy, prescious.

It wasn't the redbook of Westmarch where he wrote it. The book of Westmarch contained the writings of Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam. The Red book of Westmarch was compiled after Bilbo sailed.

Red Book of Westmarch

In origin the diary and commentaries of Bilbo Baggins, with additions by his heir

THIS ACCORDING TO THE ENCLYCLOPEDIA OF ARDA..and the books written by JRRT are the final say.

...The first definite mention of the Red Book is in the Prologue to The Lord of the Rings, which states that Bilbo took it with him when he left the Shire in III 3001. It was in a very unfinished state at this point; the important Translations from the Elvish would not be added until after Bilbo's arrival at Rivendell. Nevertheless, it must have predated Bilbo's departure by some time, and may even date back to his journey to Erebor sixty years before.
ok that's it. N & RTB have the go for the next question

Radagast The Brown
04-04-2004, 07:25 AM
Huh! ;)

I agree, the Red Book of Westmarch is with the adds of Frodo and Sam.

Ok... How was Pippin called by 'the folk' (in Gondor) after he wore the uniform of the gear of the Tower?

Spock

You mean Bilbo didn't pop into a shop a say, "I'd like to buy a Red Book of Westmarch to write in."?:p It's like the "when does life begin?" debate. The fetus becomes Bob but was it Bob when the zygote formed? Speaking past tense one would refer to Bob's zygote, but at the time it was not Bob.

I actually first thought the question was geographical in nature. "Where" instead of "in what" or "on what" is somewhat ambiguous.

Spock
04-04-2004, 02:31 PM
The Miriam Webster Dictionary defines

Where=Function: adverb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English hw[AE]r; akin to Old High German hwAr where, Old English hwA who -- more at WHO
1 a : at, in, or to what place <where is the house> <where are we going> b : at, in,

YOU GUYS can't stand it that I was right in using the terminology I did. Specificity defines trivia. Enough already.

Spock:
...Further information will also be found in the selection from the Red Book of Westmarch that has already been published, underthe title of The Hobbit. That story was derived from the earlier chapter of the Red Book...
From the Prologue. So there. :p

You're correct about my question, by the way, although I did want what they said, nor the meaning of what they said...

Cirdan
04-04-2004, 06:14 PM
He had a diary that was later named red book of westmarch. The question remains is was that what he called it while he was writing in it. We all know it was eventually called that after it was completed. Nowhere does Bilbo refer to it as "The Red Book of Westmarch". He does talk about having papers that needed going through and completing. If you have quotes from JRRT about the date it was named that would be different. It's copyright date in Shire Reckoning would be good, too. :p:D

Didn't like the zygote analogy, eh? How about unfinished, as yet unamed work in progress later known as "The Red Book of Westmarch"?

What did the destruction of the ring/Mordor remind Faramir of... and how did he know enough about that to be reminded of it?
For the first part of the question: the sinking of Númenor? No clue for the second part.

ethuiliel
08-07-2004, 10:10 PM
Right so far, but how did he... er... let's say... experience the sinking of Númenor?

08-10-2004, 12:53 PM
maybe his father denthor or another wise man had told him about it?

ethuiliel
08-10-2004, 01:37 PM
nope, Halbarad of the Dunedain was pretty close.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-10-2004, 01:48 PM
Faramir saw it in the Palantiri somehow!?
or if i may guess twice in one post...
He saw it in another dream similar to the "Prophecy" Dream of the one ring being found!?

ethuiliel
08-10-2004, 05:56 PM
Your last guess is close enough...

‘It reminds me of Númenor,’ said Faramir, and wondered to hear himself speak.
‘Of Númenor?’ said Éowyn.
‘Yes,’ said Faramir, ‘of the land of Westernesse that foundered, and of the great dark wave climbing over green lands and above the hills, and coming on, darkness inescapable. I often dream of it.’ Not exactly a prophecy like the other dream, but close enough.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-11-2004, 06:14 PM
Well then if I am correct then my next question will be...

When was this quote said, and who said it; "When the black breath blows, and death's shadow grows..."?

Well some and all. The first confrontation left the leader of the Ruffians dead with four arrows in him. Then at The Battle of Bywater 1419" , nearly 70 Ruffians and 19 Hobbits were slain.

Or something like that. :p

Radagast The Brown

Gee, Chapter 5 says, .."when the Captains were two days gone", this conversation took place. When he asked of Eowyn of the Warden he was told he'd learn more from him, and then Merry was sent to him. No date is mentioned.

Telcontar_Dunedain
10-26-2004, 12:28 PM
I thought it took them three days to get to the Black Gate. and they got there the day the Ring was destroyed, the 25th March. Thats adds up to March 25th. Or maybe I have my facts wrong

I've been scratching my noodle for a challenging question and I think have one -- we'll see. Good luck. :)

The great horn of Boromir was the hunting horn of this Steward of Gondor, who may have fashioned it from an antler from one of the wild bovine of Oromë.

Rosie Gamgee

Rosie Gamgee
11-08-2004, 07:18 PM
Will it be cheating if I answer? *grins evilly*

Faramir made the statement under restraint, in Minas Tirith when his father said that he wished Faramir and Boromir's places had been exchanged- essentially that Faramir had died in stead of Boromir. "May I ask you to remember why is was that I, not Boromir, was in Ithilien? It was the Lord of the City who gave the errand to him." "Stir not the bitterness in the cup I have mixed for myself...." and so on. I love that part. Such feeling.

ethuiliel
