let's try and stump each other. I'll start off: Who gave Huan the wolfhound of Valinor to Celegorm? And what does the name Huan mean?
Quaff Down Gin
10-14-1999, 08:49 PM
My guess to part A of your question is Orome. For part B, I'll guess "hound with big bark" :)
Hernalt

Quaff wins a prize. "<FONT COLOR=GREEN>Celegorm the Fair was the third of the seven sons of Fëanor. The most ambitious of the seven, he followed the oath of his father with the greatest ardour, and this led him to his destruction. In Valinor, Celegorm became a great hunter, and had the friendship of Oromë, often hunting with the Vala or visiting his house. From Oromë, Celegorm gained great knowledge of birds and beasts, and he learned to understand their tongues, and he gained also another gift, Huan the great hound. He also had great friendship with his cousin Aredhel, the daughter of Fingolfin.</FONT>" - Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm). (See also Sauron (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/s/sauron.html).) Etymology of Huan, roots and comparisons from Ardalambion (http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/index/indexs09.htm): <FONT COLOR=GREEN>hound (A, Q, S) KHUG, (R) [KHUGAN]; hound of chase (A, Q, S) ROY1 Huan (Q) KHUG Huor (Q, S) KHÔ-N, (S, A) GOR Hurin (A?, S) KHOR; Húrin, Húrinn (S) ID</FONT> Silmarillion Index of Names simply lists it as 'great dog, hound'.

10-17-1999, 12:28 AM
What were the names and destinies of Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast's blue-clad peers?
bmilder
10-17-1999, 04:34 PM
Hmm... Their names were Alatar and Pallandro. As to what happened to them... uh, I don't think it was mentioned anywhere but I think they wandered into Harad or something...
Hernalt
10-17-1999, 11:57 PM
C'mon bmilder... Did they go Amish and start a family? Did they go on tour for world peace? Did they set up argument clinics? Casinos? Mafia? Did they invent the question mark? Or did they choke on peanut butter and shuffle off this mortal coil?
Loopy
10-20-1999, 05:46 PM
Didn't they travel East and start a cult of magic?
Darth Tater

bmilder

Welcome to the board! :) Hmm, uh, left-handed? (And if I'm wrong, I know the answer ;))
Darth Tater
02-04-2000, 06:38 PM
Just in case Ben's wrong I'm gonna have to guess right handed. If he's right then I agree with him.

Well, since ezboard user Carneldoo has a post history of one, and that being Jan 9th, then I suspect it may be a long time before we learn the answer.

A Tolkien Trivia thread. How enjoyable (having scared off all friends willing to play Tolkien trivia games :) ) here is a question, What were the Elvish names for the days of the week, and their names for the months.
Pharazir
02-09-2000, 01:33 PM

Don't worry, I will find some :) How many versions of the Fall of Numenor were written? Who were the charaters in the Notion Club papers similar to (there are 2 different answers here and I am looking for both). For those of you that cheat, one of the answers is on my page under Numenor Legends Essay.

This will leave 3 questions outstanding: What were the early ideas for the LOTR (ie How was Tolkien planning the new adventures) and What were the early party make-ups? (Again, answers are on my site)
Pharazir
02-10-2000, 12:42 AM
Well, offhand, I get "The Akallabeth" in the Silmarillion, "The Fall of Numenor" in the Lost Road, and "The Drowning of Anadune" in Sauron Defeated. But I believe there's stuff about it in the Peoples of Middle-Earth, and also stuff about Numenor in Unfinished Tales, but I don't know if you're counting these. And, are not the Notion Club Papers based on the Inklings? Pharazir
Finduilas
02-10-2000, 07:32 PM
correct. The complete list was The Drowning of Anadune the Alkallabeth The Notion Club Papers (I count it at least) The Lost Road Fall of Numenor History of the Alkallabeth The second answer to the second question is still to be found. The question was Who were the characters in the Notion Club Papers based on. The easy and obvious answer has been found.
Maglor
04-02-2000, 02:24 PM
That was their names in Aman like Gandalfs was Olorin.
In Middle Earth they are known as Morinehtar (darknes-slayer) and Romestamo (east-helper) source: Peples of Middle Earth page 384 and 385.

Yes, I think it was loosely (the characters) based on the Inklings, and having just read the book by Humphrey Carpenter, I would think that the meetings were pretty closely based on the Inklings too.
The second part of the Notion Club Papers is my favourite.

i know this thread is pretty much dead, given the fact that the last post was back in 2000 and so i thought, why not revive it?
(if any of the moderators don't like that, let me know)
we all know that the vala nienna is the 8th aratar and she weeps for the suffering of arda... some time, she had a "student" under her wing, teaching pity and endurance that would later be a a great influence to this student in the later years to come, the war of the ring... who is this "student" of Nienna?

Ornelírë Mistë
10-21-2003, 06:02 PM
Anar and Isil are Quenya names, but I was thinking of two others, not based on Sindarin (Anor, Ithil). Damn, I always make shaky questions.

Vassa for the sun? (I had to look for it in the Silmarillion; but it was worth it! :))
Ornelírë Mistë
10-23-2003, 12:16 PM
Yes, Radagast (though it only has one s;)). But since you both named one, who goes?
As for the Vanyar naming the Sun and Moon Anar and Isil, I have no idea. The names are close to Sindarin, and the Vanyar all stayed in Aman. And if the Noldor brought their names for them, then the Vanyarin and Sindarin names couldn't be based on each other, or could they?
Falagar
10-23-2003, 12:39 PM
Anor and Isil are Quenya names for the sun and the moon. I have no idea which one was first of Anor and Anar (or ithil and isil), but both are at least based on the same stem NAR1.
I would guess that Anor was first, and then the Sindar borrowed it, though the opposit is of course possible too. Or it may be a strange coinsidence...
Edit: I just realized that only ANÁR is mentioned as a stem in Etym, which would support my theory that Anar was first...
As for wether it was Vanyarin Q or Noldorin Q, I don't know.
Artanis
10-23-2003, 05:16 PM
I searched and found this in the Sil:
Isil the Sheen the Vanyar of old named the Moon, flower of Telperion in Valinor; and Anar the Fire-golden, fruit of Laurelin, they named the Sun. But the Noldor named them also Rána, the Wayward, and Vása, the Heart of Fire, that awakens and consumes; for the Sun was set as a sign for the awakening of Men and the waning of the Elves, but the Moon cherishes their memory.

By the Peredhil I suppose you mean Elrond and Elros?
Finwë (Ñoldor) married Indis (Vanyar) - Fingolfin - Turgon - Idril - Eärendil - Elrond/Elros.
Thingol (Teleri) married Melian (Maia) - Luthien, married Beren (house of Bëor) - Dior - Elwing - Elrond/Elros.
Galdor (house of Hador) married Hareth (Haleth's people) - Huor, married R*an (house of Bëor) - Tuor - Eärendil - Elrond/Elros.

I'm new to this thread, but here are some questions:
-What do the historians call the time of the hiding of Valinor?
-What is the highest elven tower in Tirion called?
-Who foretold the coming of Earendil?
That's enough for today :)
Radagast The Brown
05-30-2004, 05:23 AM
Actually, Beren, this thread goes in turns... Meaning, after you answer a question correctly you ask the next question, and whoever answers your question answers the next, etc... :)
So I guess it's my turn. :)
But I'll answer some of your question.
1. The tallest tower is called Mindon Eldalyeva (sp.), I think?
2. I think it was Ulmo?
My question: Near what did Dior build his house in Ossiriand?
Beren3000
05-30-2004, 04:40 PM
Sorry I didn't know about the turns thing.
Mindon Eldalieva is correct
But Huor foretold the coming of Earendil when he told Hurin on the day of Nirnaeth Arnoediad : "From you and me a star shall rise"
As to your question, Radagast The Brown, I think he built it next to the tree that Luthien was once imprisoned on (can't remember its name :( )
Any guesses on the "Hiding of Valinor"?
Rad: I think he built his place near the mound where Deneathor died back in the day. Not sure on the name, maybe haudh-en-Deneathor or somehting
Beren: I dont know
Beren3000
05-31-2004, 04:02 AM
Oops. I mixed up Ossiriand and Doriath
Radagast, I think Dior built it next to the island where Beren nd Luthien lived after they came back.
Radagast The Brown
05-31-2004, 06:16 AM
Hmmm... I wasn't looking for te island, although it might be true. And I don't really understand you, Beor.
Oh, man, I am sorry, dude, hold on. Remember the green elves who fought with the orcs before the Noldor came down, and they fought across Ossirand, until finally they were surrounded on a hill by the river Gelan, or whatever the north-south river that constitutes the western border of Ossirand was, and the king there was Denethor, anyway, they were surrounded, and Thingol could send no aid, and they were slain. It is that mound I am thinking of. Sorry to be vague, I am affraid this is really no better.,
Radagast The Brown
05-31-2004, 07:59 AM
You mean, the ilsand Tol Galen, as Beren said; and the answer is wrong, that's where Luthien and Beren (the real ;)) lived, not Dior - he had his own house.

Maedhros
05-31-2004, 03:12 PM
From the Published Silmarillion
At that time Beren and Lúthien yet dwelt in Tol Galen, the Green Isle, in the River Adurant, southernmost of the streams that falling from Ered Lindon flowed down to join with Gelion; and their son Dior Eluch*l had to wife Nimloth, kinswoman of Celeborn, prince of Doriath, who was wedded to the Lady Galadriel. The sons of Dior and Nimloth were Eluréd and Elur*n; and a daughter also was born to them, and she was named Elwing, which is Star-spray, for she was born on a night of stars, whose light glittered in the spray of the waterfall of Lanthir Lamath beside her father's house.
