An interesting one:

What was the name of Voronwe's father?

Sister Golden Hair
06-03-2004, 10:24 AM
Aranwe.:)

Beren3000
06-03-2004, 11:14 AM
Isn't Voronwe a nickname for Elendil?
I think so...so I'm gonna say Valandil

Falagar
06-03-2004, 11:20 AM
I was refering to the Elf who helped Tuor so SGh is correct. :)

Sister Golden Hair
06-03-2004, 11:43 AM
Before Gandalf, who posessed Glandring?

Valandil
06-03-2004, 12:10 PM
Turgon?

Sister Golden Hair
06-03-2004, 02:06 PM
Yep. Your go.:)

Valandil
06-03-2004, 10:45 PM
OK... the HARD part was definitely coming up with the next question: :)

What was the third great battle of the Wars of Beleriand?

Falagar
06-04-2004, 09:40 AM
Dagor-nuin-gilliath was the first, and I think there was one Dagor Aglaron after that...Dagor Bragolach? May be that there was another one earlier but can't quite remember it.

Valandil

Valandil
06-04-2004, 10:57 AM
Sorry... not correct. :)

Falagar
06-04-2004, 10:59 AM
Then I'll try Dagor Aglaron (can continue this for some time ;))

Valandil

I'll take that one. My book says 'Dagor Aglareb' - which is 'The Glorious Battle'.

Kind of a 'guy question' wasn't it? Your turn! :D

Falagar
06-04-2004, 05:45 PM
Yeah :D I always mix up the order they came in but I usually remember the names.

What did Melian give to Beleg when he left to find Turin? Not sure whether this is an easy or a hard one...

Radagast The Brown
06-04-2004, 05:47 PM
Lembas?

Falagar
06-05-2004, 01:27 PM
Yep.

Radagast The Brown
06-05-2004, 04:09 PM
What was the wing-span of Thorondor?

Falagar
06-07-2004, 08:10 AM
Was it seven feet? Came down from some corner of my brain when I saw the question, though it doesn't seem nearly large enough.

Valandil
06-07-2004, 08:52 AM
No - it was something unreasonably humongous... like was it 120'? Does he say 20 fathoms or something?

Falagar
06-07-2004, 11:47 AM
I distinctly remember the numbers 9 and/or 7, but it might just be my memory playing with me.

Nerdanel
06-09-2004, 05:24 PM
Wasn't it 50 fathoms or something like that?

Sister Golden Hair
06-09-2004, 07:17 PM
30 fathoms.

Radagast The Brown
06-11-2004, 01:33 PM
No, to all. The closest, though, was Nerdanel's guess.

Sister Golden Hair
06-11-2004, 02:59 PM
From the Published Silmarillion, Houghton Mifflin Edition, 1977.

Now, even as Fingon bent his bow, there flew down from the high airs Thorondor, King of Eagles, mightiest of all birds that have ever been, whose outstretched wings spanned thirty fathoms; and staying Fingon's hand he took him up, and bore him to the face of the rock where Meadhros hung.

Nerdanel
06-13-2004, 03:33 PM
RadtB, what are you gonna say now?;) :p

Nerdanel
06-16-2004, 08:32 AM
I guess it's your turn, SGH.:)

From A Guide to Tolkien by David Day:

"With a wingspan measured at thirty fathoms, Thorondor appears to have been the largest Eagle ever to have lived."

Sister Golden Hair

What was the "Firmament?"

Beren3000
06-16-2004, 03:34 PM

Oh I see! It's the Earth's atmosphere as opposed to space (the Halls of Ea, IIRC); right?

-What do historians call the time of the Hiding of Valinor?

(I hope that survives for a few posts at least)

Count Comfect
06-16-2004, 06:32 PM
Isn't that when the Valar made it impossible to reach Valinor by merely sailing West by removing it far far far far far far ... far away?

Beren3000
06-17-2004, 02:42 AM
Yes that's the time of the Hiding of Valinor. But what is its name in Quenya?

Falagar
06-20-2004, 07:06 PM
"Nurtalë Valinóreva" or similar?

Beren3000
06-20-2004, 11:28 PM
Bingo! your go Falagar :)

P.S. I hope you didn't look it up

Falagar
06-21-2004, 07:17 PM
Nope, didn't look it up except to check the spelling (I first wrote Valinoreva, therefor the edit).

Hm...what's the Quenya word for 'iron'?

let's see....how long did Elros live?

Falagar
06-23-2004, 07:26 PM
Late 400's or early 500...I'll say 487, soundsl ike a good number. ;)

cgp_drumboy
06-23-2004, 09:22 PM
Elros, of the line of Earendil, lived to be 500 years old, and was the oldest living Man ever recorded.

Died: 442 Second Age

A river? Does it mean 'coldness' or 'cold one' or something with cold?

Nerdanel
07-18-2004, 04:22 PM
Yes, it's a river. But it has nothing to do with 'cold'.:)

actually, I have to admit that there's a chance that this answer could only be found in the index, not in the text itself.:o Please forgive me.:(
it means 'river' and 'stream flowing down from the heights'

Falagar
07-18-2004, 08:02 PM
Don't worry 'bout it, all that matters is that it's in there somewhere. ;) :)

Ok, so:

What was the name of the first steward? Forgive me if this's already been asked, but it's late and I can't come up with anything better...leaving early tomorrow, by the way, so may not be here to confirm the answer.

Radagast The Brown
07-19-2004, 05:01 AM
But do you mean first steward at all, or first ruling steward?
I know Mardil is the first of the ruling stewards. (I think?)

Nerdanel

Fal?

Radagast The Brown
07-22-2004, 05:45 PM
He said he'll be away... Care if I ask a question?

What was the name of Tol Sirion after Sauron conquered it?

Beren3000
07-22-2004, 06:08 PM
I'm not very good with the Sil. names, so please don't laugh: is it Gurthang?

Radagast The Brown
07-22-2004, 06:17 PM
Of course I'm not going to laugh. :) But Gurthang is Sauron himself, unfortunately.

Falagar
07-24-2004, 03:32 PM
Sauron was called Gorthaur, unless he had split personalities. :P (Explains a lot about Túrin's sword though.)

I think it was "Isle of the Werewolves" or similar, bur I cannot remember the Sindarin name...Tol-en...gaurhoth?

Radagast The Brown
07-24-2004, 03:43 PM
Right, thought something ther ewas wrong. :p My mistake.

Yup, you're right. :)

Falagar
07-24-2004, 03:53 PM
Hey, a week almost without Tolkien and my memory still lives! Incredible. ;) (And I ment the first ruling steward, but I was tired so please forgive and don't hurt me.)

What was the name of Turgon's wife and where did she die?

Falagar
07-31-2004, 12:03 PM
Oh come on now, can't be that hard. ;)

Radagast The Brown
07-31-2004, 01:28 PM
I can guess she died in Helcaraxe?

Falagar
07-31-2004, 01:50 PM
Yup. Want to have a go at her name as well? ;)

Earniel
07-31-2004, 04:07 PM

Count Comfect
07-31-2004, 11:41 PM
And the ring was stolen from his dead body by Morgoth's soldiers, then stolen back by Beren, no?

Falagar
08-01-2004, 08:38 AM
...for later to fall into the hands of Aragorn, who undoubtly wore it a lot during his rule.

I'll be gone for a week or two, by the way. (Just to keep you from thinking me dead. ;))

Nerdanel
08-01-2004, 03:07 PM

not fal's i guess, if he'll be gone (have a nice holiday!:) ). i guess it's you, Count Comfect.

Radagast The Brown

Meriadoc Brandybuck

Radagast The Brown

What's the name of Orome's horse?

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-05-2004, 07:12 PM
The horse of Oromë was named Nahar, his coat it is said would show as white in the sun and shine silver at night.

(Similarities to Shadowfax are close, no?)

Radagast The Brown
08-05-2004, 07:28 PM
Correct. :)

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-09-2004, 07:19 PM
I hope this question is understandable its the only semi-difficult one I can think of.
How many wounds did Sauron receive in the entirety of the Silmarillion? As well as where and how, or by whom?

Meaning in the whole book wherever he was mentioned how many lasting wounds did he receive.

Falagar
08-10-2004, 04:57 PM
Hm, he got one by Ungoliantë when he didn't give her his gems (if you cound suffocation, that is), seven by Fingolfin in their duel before Angband (in the legs, I believe) and one by Gwaihir right after that duel. (In addition to wounded pride when Lúthien stole his prrrecious gem. ;))

That's all I can think of right now...unless, of course, you count the mentioning of him having his arms, legs and head cut off in Morgoth's Ring (before they threw him into the void).

Radagast The Brown
08-10-2004, 06:30 PM
But didn't he say 'Sauron' Falagar? You're counting Morgoth's.... thought Halbarad probably did mean Morgoth anyway.

Falagar
08-10-2004, 07:39 PM
Do'h

*cough* Yeah, ok: Sauron was wounded by Huan once on Tol Sirion (aka Tol en Gaurhoth) when Lúthien came for Beren; that's all I can remember on Sauron...unless you include the Akallabeth and Of the Rings of Power in "The SIlmarillion" as well.

Which reminds me I really need to reread the Silm.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-10-2004, 11:16 PM
I was in fact refering to Sauron not Morgoth and as I recall there was more than one wound inflicted. Yet the answer of Morgoth is quite nice, I will award Falagar correct... your go...

Falagar
08-11-2004, 06:09 PM
I didn't really earn this but I'll take it anyway then. ;)

I'm afraid this is a particulary easy question, but I can't come up with anything better right now: What's the meaning of 'Sauron'?

Radagast The Brown
08-11-2004, 06:19 PM
I think I hyave already asked this question... is it the abhored? IIRC.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-11-2004, 06:36 PM
Sauron means The Abhorred, which in turn is defined as to regard with extreme repugnance!!!

Woops, Rad got it first, oh well :)

Falagar
08-12-2004, 10:13 AM
Both right, your go Rad. :)

Radagast The Brown
08-12-2004, 01:02 PM
Who was the tallest of all the Children of Iluvatar? (meaning Elves and Men; and Dwarves if you want. But not Valar or Maiar.)

Falagar
08-12-2004, 01:18 PM
According to the Silm at least that was Elwë aka Thingol...

Radagast The Brown
08-12-2004, 07:24 PM
Yes, that's what the Sil states. :)

Falagar
08-13-2004, 05:23 AM
What and where was the Aelin-uial?

Nerdanel
08-13-2004, 09:52 AM
the place where sirion and aros meet?

Sister Golden Hair
08-13-2004, 01:19 PM
What and where was the Aelin-uial?It was like a ferry port of Doriath, wasn't it?

Halbarad of the Dunedain
08-15-2004, 09:35 PM
The Aelin-uial were the lakes and fens that formed where the rivers Aros & Sirion met. It was also known as the Meres of Twilight. It was a site that Turgon and Finrod built their hidden strongholds at Gondolin and Nargothrond. The Aelin-uial was under the control of the Kingdom of Doriath and it was a secret ferry way of Doriath.

Falagar
08-16-2004, 09:13 AM
Sorry, was unexpectedly drawn away (also called "Tolkien-convention") from my comp for a few days and haven't been able to get back on. Sorry.

Nerdanel is half-correct, SGH almost completes the answer while Halbarad gets full score.

Nerdanel
08-16-2004, 09:28 AM
it's your turn then, halbarad.:)

Halbarad of the Dunedain
09-24-2004, 01:58 AM
Seems it is my turn quite often... Oh well I guess I should ask a question... Its not going to be hard... another thread roller... get this trivia going again.
What was Galadriels name as given to her by her father in Valinor?

Radagast The Brown
09-24-2004, 08:36 AM

What are the names of the followers of Earendil that came with him to his voyages and to Valinor?

Halbarad of the Dunedain
10-01-2004, 04:40 AM
Were they related to him closely!?

Radagast The Brown
10-01-2004, 06:49 PM
I'm not sure. I'd assume so, if they sailed with him in all the seas.(or something like that.)

Halbarad of the Dunedain
10-04-2004, 12:30 AM
Elwing?

Radagast The Brown
10-04-2004, 12:53 PM
No... She's his wife. And she didn't go with him, except when they went to Valinor.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
10-04-2004, 11:39 PM
Hah, I know she was his wife I'm just guessing really, I don't have Sil near me at the moment.

Halbarad of the Dunedain
10-07-2004, 05:21 PM
I just started reading the Silmarillion again and I chanced upon the answer to your question Rad. I have not read the story of Eärendil befor today. Anyhow the names of his Mariner companions were Falathar Erellont and Aerandir.

Radagast The Brown
10-08-2004, 02:28 PM
Very good. I thought no one would ever get it. :)

Halbarad of the Dunedain
10-08-2004, 05:07 PM
Well I didn't know but I was reading Sil again and I read that and said to myself; "Rad's question!" So I posted it right away. I will have a new question by tomorrow.

Nerdanel
10-13-2004, 05:17 AM
when is tomorrow?;)

Wayfarer
10-13-2004, 11:14 AM
Tomorrow is not a place or time. Tomorrow is a pointer which leads to a variable time. If the current calendar date is N, 'tomorrow' is always equal to N+1.

So... Why is the sky blue? ;)

Lenya
10-15-2004, 02:07 PM
That question can be answered in more than one way:

1 - blue is a very soft and relaxing colour. Imagine how tense you would feel if the sky was bood red.

2 - The angle at which the sun's lightwaves enter our atmosfere stretches the waves to a blue wavelenght.
(or something more or less like that :) )

Radagast The Brown

Telcontar_Dunedain

Both incorrect.

Sister Golden Hair
01-15-2005, 10:57 AM
If you count his "last and desperate stroke" where he hewed Morgoth's foot with Ringil, that would be eight wounds. :)

Telcontar_Dunedain
01-15-2005, 11:02 AM
Correct SGH

Sister Golden Hair

I think I'm probably wanting it to be to exact from the book. Sorry. :p

Pytt
01-17-2005, 11:52 AM

Count Comfect

"O Master of doom, by doom mastered" said by Nienor about Turin Turambar when she finally finds out who he is and he's dying?

Why is Doriath destroyed? That is, who does it and what is their reason?

Last Child of Ungoliant
01-18-2005, 07:41 PM
firstly the dwarves take a bash to regain the nauglamir
secondly two of feanors sons (celegorm and caranthir?) do it for the silmaril

Sister Golden Hair
01-18-2005, 07:43 PM
OK. Something off the top of my head:

Why is Doriath destroyed? That is, who does it and what is their reason? It was destroyed by the Dwarves of Nogrod, for the Nauglamir that held the Silmaril. LCoU is right too. He beat me to it. :p

Last Child of Ungoliant

Lenya
01-19-2005, 02:38 PM

(can't clearly remember, just guessing)

Count Comfect
01-19-2005, 02:42 PM
Very close, but not quite fully there. There's more to it.
