BTW... is there any way to move this part out of the "A few ways to tell you are obsessed with LotR"... before a moderator finds it? :D
Ok, how about you know you're obsessed with LoTR when your best illustrations of literary techniques are all taken from Tolkien

A good way to tell if you are too obsessed with Tolkien is that your office at work is decorated with drawings of Éowyn and Lúthien instead of your wife and kids. :D

And you know your whole family is too obsessed if your wife knows... but doesn't care... :D

Actually, the portraits are on the wall, and the pics of my wife and kids are on my desk. And she knows but gives me trouble about it. ;)

Well, sorta true. I do have the pictures of my wife and kids. She gripes because there are more fantasy girls than of her. Heh, there is an enlarged one of her taken the year we started dating.

Well, they roll their eyes when you mention Shakespeare, too. Bad literary taste is nearly universal among teenagers.
Lies, they're all lies!!
i enjoy reading obstentiously[sp.?]

LCoU,
you enjoy reading obstentiously? I would take that to mean while constipated (obstipation) and very long periods of time (tendentiously) :o ! Do family members complain about either or both? Don't forget the risks of the same: long term use of Preparation H or Witchazel or Tucks, etc.
I know you meant ostentatiously (show off :D ), but I couldn't resist.

And thus my search for future names for my fish is complete. :D I usually get Siamese Fighting Fish anyway, which tend to fight... so it's actually quite symbolic... ;) :p :D

Yup, searching for Mini-Balrogs definitely makes you obsessed with LOTR. ;)
8. When you see someone dressed as a ringwraith you run for your life.
I'd run even if I wasn't obsessed with LOTR. Your list was great me9996. :)

You know you are really obesessed when you know more about the world of Tolkien than anything else. Your obsessed when a semi-Tolkien nut askes, "So who was Gandalf exactlly? Was he a human or elf or what?" and you reply along the lines of,
"Weeeeeeeeell, it really all begins with the Valar who were created by Eru, that is the one god. The Valar were kind of like angelic godlike beings who created and watched over Middle-Earth and they had angelic powers beneath them.(persay) These were called the Maiar. Now, Morgoth was one of the Valar and became evil, his highest follower was Sauron and Sauron was a Maia, a Maia of Aule. When Melkor, or Morgoth was chained in a "neather world" type place Sauron the Maia took his place as dark lord. The elves and men and other free peoples of ME speant ages fighting him and eventually in the third age the Valar sent five Maia called the Istari, Maia who were sent with the purpose of aiding the free peoples in Saurons defeat. The first of the five to come across the seas to ME was Curanur, or Saruman as we know him. With him were two blue wizards who never come into the story for some reason. Next came Radagast the Brown, and finally came Gandalf the Gray. When Gandalf arrived he was given the elvan ring of fire, for Cirdan the shipwright had seen a great labor in his future and gave the ring to Gandalf to aid in his quest. After the events of Lord of the Rings Saruman was cast down from the Istari order and Gandalf was made into Gandalf the White, for the Valar saw he was in need of greater strength. Anyhow Gandalf and co. defeat Sauron and in the end Gandalf travels back across the sea to Valinor where he began."
It's knowledge and answers like that that tell if your a true Tolkien nut.

By the by, just today I did an obsessed thing...
At lunch, my straw was rolling toward the edge of the table, but me, with my hands full, ould not stop it. It fell and I screamed dramatically "Gandalf!". My friends did not get it. ^_^''

You nearly write down "Catherine of Aragorn" instead of "Catherine of Aragon" on a World History test. Same goes for saying "Aragorn" instead of "Argon" when talking about chemistry. (But hey, Argon is a noble gas!)
Noble gas? You are good at this... :)

11-27-2004, 07:29 PM
Ai, but I registered later than you. Sorry, I am very, very competitive. ^_^
I did all of my Crafts I projects on LOTR. Let's see...
1) Elven calligraphy in a Two Towers frame (all black and red, oh how I hate plaster!)
2) Blue moon made with LOTR in mind
3) LOTR keychain
4) Frodo sock puppet (which was bloody adorable! He had a little green wash-cloth cloak closed with a leaf-shaped ring cut in half, and tiny earring one-ring. hehe)
Poor frodo, ;)

How about when you hear someone say "scouring," and you don't think of cleaning a tub.
Or you look at the screen for "departures" at the airport and think of Boromir.
Or if someone mentions "Three is Company" you don't think of Jack, Chrissy, and Janet. (okay, well that one wouldn't count if you're under 28)
 You got that right!
me9996
11-27-2004, 07:37 PM
My friends and family already think I'm exaggerantly (if that's even a word) obssessed with LOTR and all things Tolkein. Here are some reason's why:
6) Dream about fighting Orcs alongside Aragorn, Legolas, and Frodo
I am guilty of all these, unless stated otherwise. So, if you think I'm a big freak...I don't care, because I love LOTR!:D
I don't think number 6 is right (I do it all the time!)
of corce if I was obssessed I wouldn't admit it  .

Already said but worth repeating:

:D
I like Nienna... I can never decide who's my favourite of the Valar, though...
Kind of confusing.
*goes back to Finrod worshipping*
Oh yes! You know you're obsessed when you do that! Worship Elves, I mean!
And when you get your mother to read the Athrabeth (which, by the way, is a more obscure story that cannot be read without knowledge of the Silmarillion)! And here's the catch! Your mother has never read the Silmarillion! Hasn't read LotR in 30 years! And before the movies, guessed that Rohan was a girl!
That was bad... and painful.
You know your obsessed when it causes you emotional pain when someone doesn't know such supposedly easy things... ;)

You're internet connection in you're room mysteriously dies, so you run downstairs to the dorm computer room as quickly as possible...
:o
I have to go back in a minute and see what happened to my computer...
Rosie Gamgee
11-29-2004, 05:30 PM
How's this for one:
You've used all the gas in your car driving back and forth from your house to the library, the seat you sit in there never gets cold, and all you have to do is show up and the librarian already has the computer ready for you.

(Regarding the meaning of 'Aragorn')
I believe Tolkien explicitly denied that...
Elemmírë
11-29-2004, 07:14 PM
Royal Tree. Never actually thought about it that way... but where would the 'g' come from?
Talking about trees though... Galadhriel... that spelling is amusing.
Sorry. That was random.
A sure sign of obsession!
And no, Valandil. Haven't done that...
But for most of the princes of the Noldor, I know not only the Sindarin version of the name, but the original Quenya, as well as their mother names (not all, but quite a few), nicknames, and most of the meanings.
That's got to count for something...
Ooo...my posts aren't technically LotR-centred... ah well. Erm... Galadriel is LotR! There! I have a link... :D

What's the point of going to bed when it's that late...
Though I shouldn't talk. I'll probably do it eventually...
Depends on how many people are online.
But you're right. Real ones are so much more fun. How about this one, it actually is LotR related, for real!: :D
Um... let's see if I remember this right, in junior year of high school, some movie-obsessed boys in your biology class start posting up pictures from the movie on the blackboard and walls of the classroom, practically starting a war in class...
They decide to name the... well, it was some sort of lizard... Gwindor, which they somehow decided meant "spiderman"
So, they show of their obsession by calling the thing "Gwindor son of Edrahil" or "Gwindor son of Elrohir", I don't remember which...
So I just have to show off my own much worse obsession later by saying, "Do you want me to really show you how to write that in Elvish?"
And then proceed to put their ludicrous translation into tengwar.

These are ones I'M gilty of:
1. You request the lord of the rings books as a bedtime story becase your siblings have only seen the movie.
2. You have figured out exactly how you would make a lord of the rings (and other storys) game (But you can't program it :( )
3. You start makeing jokes about the lord of the rings with your mom.
4. You get agravted that the battle in the shire isn't in any lotr movie you've seen.
5. You think a great ring would be usefill.

You're LotR obsessed if you stay up late into the night for a few days in a row sewing cloaks for all your friends so they can join you on Halloween in being characters... and then after Halloween wear your cloak while you do homework/do dishes/read the books outloud with those same friends.

You know you're obsessed when every conversation you've had in the last week miraculously turns to LotR and you find yourself recounting the Tale of Beren and Luthien to people at random...
When you constantly watch the movies and vacilitate between beyond in such a purist mood that you can't watch it without getting mad, or becoming hysterical whenever anything that happens reminds you of your favourite character's horrible, bloody death (2 words: Minas Tirith).

You refer words to Tolkien such as brandy (as in Brandybuck, Brandywine, or Brandyhall, or all three) or Merry Christmas.
You've been saving up your money for RotK EE... since TTT EE came out.
You're friends are giving something Tolkien-related for Christmas... because they know you'll like it.
You dream about LotR.

You know you're obsessed... and so does everyone else... when you show up at the store the day the EE comes out with a bunch of one dollar bills and coins that you gathered together to buy the DVD. Hehe... the money part wasn't that bad, but we did brouse four stores for the cheapest price before finally buying it. And my sis and I fought over it practically the whole way home. We actually managed to watch the whole thing last night too, but only because our dad let us eat dinner in front of the tv.

When you think that "readig Tolkien" is a legitimate excuse for not going to class, or staying up so late you sleep through it...(haven't got there yet, but only becuase I left my books at home.)
When your friends ban you and another friend from speaking at the dinner table because all you talk about is Tolkien and ME....(yes this happened to El and I)

A betta named Sam is less frightening than a betta named Maedhros. I'm really looking forward to this now... I used to keep bettas. I wonder if it would be worse to name them in Quenya or Sindarin. I'll get several female ones and call them Irisse, Itarille, and Artanis, methinks.
This is actually pretty good, seeing as how I don't like recycling my fish's names. This could work for a long time. ;)

When you hear (or accedentaly say) a word or two, and suddenly find yourself reciting the whole scene where that word is in. For example... and this is far from the only one, just one that came to mind... you are in a plane and looking out the window. You are glad that the clouds are not too bad, and you point out one, saying it is whispy. You say "It's a whispy cloud." Suddenly, you change that to "It's just a whisp of cloud." "It's moving fast... and against the wind."

"Cast it into the fiery chasm from whence it came!" popped out before I could stop myself. I don't think that the professor regarded this as an especially helpful contribution.

Is your school really anti-Tolkien?
I wouldn't say "anti-Tolkien" as much as "not very well versed in the masterpieces that are works of Tolkien" I have a couple of friends who i turned on to LoTR, and they all think they know more about it then me, one kid challenged me to a LoTR trivia contest, I killed him. :D

You've half convinced yourself that multiple universes exist, and that everything written in a book exists in our minds, and therefore truly exists somewhere in this socalled multiverse, and hence have indeed decided that in at least one fashion, ME is real. And this fills you with unimaginable joy. :) Erm... guilty. :o

Ahem, once again "gilty" and now "tread".
I AM FEELING OLD!
You know you're obsessed when you give your age according to the age in which you were born.
EG: I'm two ages old.

You go up to random people in the Tolkien section of the bookstore and start trying to convince them to read the Sil and all of the HoME books instead of just the main trilogy. (Guilty, though it started out just answering his question as to whether or not they were published after Tolkien's death.)
Also: Never read the section of the Two Towers dealing with the ents during science class while studying Mendelian genetics. I still haven't gotten rid of the mental images conjured by cross pollination...

Gond = Rock in Quenyan if you don't know! ;)

You continue to post in this thread and make up reasons for being obsessed when you already know you are, and people tell you that you are all the time too. *is guilty*
I don't know, but when I go to either of the following mountain ranges in Southern California:
White Mountains, Black Mountains, Blue Mountains, etc., I will give a horrified gasp and collapse on the ground yelling at the inhabitants for destroying Middle Earth (after all, every one of those mountain ranges are in the Mojave desert.)

You don't even REMEMBER some of the images dealing with cross-species breeding. I think you blocked it out. I'll draw you a picture.
You know you're obsessed when you split LotR up into six books for your book logs.

It's time for everyone to exchange PMs on what to post and have one member who posts what we decide on. That way we could narrow a large number of posts to a few.

It's all right, I think we've covered the whole obsession. Well, you can never do THAT, but I think we have gone far enough.
Let it die with dignaty, the kind of dignaty we will never have...

You know you are obsessed if you think LOTR is real.
