Hey, I do that....:o ;)
You've decided to go hiking, but you can't leave until you've found 5 short people, one wizened old man, one rugged-and-manly-looking guy with a sword, and one man with a serious jewelry fetish to come along (you're the elf).

When i am an independent adult i want every room in my new zealand house to be a different place in middle earth and i will make myself my own clothes which will be Arwenesque gowns and things like that. I will never wear a coat just a cloak.

When you're listening to music, you try to relate it to LotR in some way. I don't know about you guys, but Mornay's Dream, from Braveheart, really reminds me of FotR.

Yes darling ARAGON court- no r! Therefore its probably named after the first wife of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon! The number of times I have written Aragorn in her name in history class though! I can tell I'm obsessed with LOTR when my now finished fan fic sits there staring at me and I decide to add "just one more scene!" That's probably named after Catherine of Aragon, Spanish princess, and first wife of Henry VIII.
I went to London, and I went to Hampton Courst, Henry VIII famous palace. When I saw "Catherine of Aragon" I was subtley thinking LotR. And when I just typed her name, I accidentally wrote "Aragorn".
Obsessed? I think we are. :p

Oh stuff Catherine of Aragon! I bet the people who made the street sign just couldn't spell and that it is really named after Aragorn.

At least two of your email addresses includes a name/element from Tolkien's work, and at least one of your passwords.

I am guilty of these. My alias' include elvenprincess; ladyoftherings; Idril Anarion (my name in Elvish); and I have passwords like Frodo, legolas, and elvenbow
I'm constantly quoting the movies and I think my sister has permantly labeled me "LOTR Obbsessed"
I'm always mixing up names at school: Mythil Violet becomes Mythrill Violet; Barkdull Way becomes Barak Dull Way (sorry if misspelled); The element argon becomes Aragorn; ect...

i) You start a fight with your really good friend because she said LotR sucks. This was referring to LotR in general, so because it included the books (i don't really care if anyone likes the movie or not), you felt you had to beat out that horrible belief
ii) Your Indonesian teacher takes off a percent on your assignment that has a ME theme because you wrote 'Kemeja Frodo terbuat dari mithril' (Frodo's shirt is made from mithril) and she thought you were trying to say an Indonesian word when you wrote mithril.

You see a picture in the local free newspaper and recognize it as looking very much like a fellow Mooter's avatar, and then proceed to spend about ten minutes thinking about all the cool things that Mooter has said/done in your time on the moot, and what that Mooter looks like, etc. :D

Today, you raved on to the class for ten minutes about how the movie adaptation of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was so much better than the movie adaptation of TTT (mainly because the changes made sense). Then, when your friend had the nerve to ask you if the book LotR was good, you gave her the STARE (the are-you-kidding-me? stare) for such a long period of time she began to feel exceedingly uncomfortable.
Your friends begin to refer to you as 'My LotR buddy' after they realise you will continually talk about the book and lecture them about how bad the movie TTT is, how you say names (NOT Argon *shudder* - refer to 'Do your friends frustrate you? thread)

You're talking about things you like to do, and you accidentally say "Fencing is one of my hobbits" instead of "hobbies". (I did that in an interview! Fortunately, the interviewer was also a Tolkien fan, and understood. ;))
Friends know not to ask you questions like "Who's Thranduil?" when you comment that they look as though they could be related to Thranduil, because you will go on and on for hours about Thranduil, his history, his lineage, his children, how he's described in LotR and the Hobbit....you get the picture. :D

I'm no perfectionist. I thought FotR was alright. Didn't you read my post about To Kill a Mockingbird the movie? I praised that!
Yes! TTT was horrendous!(as an adaptation - like GW said way back). Even as a movie it was bad- I tried to watch it for what it was and i still found it boring. For the first time ever, I was waiting for a movie to end.

I don't see how you can be obsessed when you don't enjoy to movies.
Gwaimir Windgem
04-03-2003, 10:14 PM
Simple: Because I was a fan of the book all of my life, then PJ came along, and I refused to consider a movie which didn't even have the same characters as the same.
Besides, Tolkien was around for like fifty years before the movies, and there were people plenty obsessed. The Lord of the Rings is MUCH more than those movies. :p
Starr Polish
04-03-2003, 10:17 PM
And I can't see how you can say you're obsessed unless you're learning the book inside out and don't own more than two books related to or by Tolkien (I currently own six).
P.S. GW, your PM box is full.

1 LOTR (I have a one volume version, so could count as 3)
1 Silmarillion
1 Letters
1 Hobbit (soon to be 2)
1 JRR Tolkien, Author of the Century
1 The Guide to Middle Earth
So 6 or 8, depending on how you count LOTR.
I also own a red journal that says "there and Back again" and has the initials BB on it. I haven't written in it yet and I've had it for more than a year.

Erm, slightly embarassed that I have such a tiny collection. No worries, I'm soon to expand it, as soon as I can get into Borders....
Today we played Celebrity Heads in English. For my friend, I wrote Frodo as her 'celebrity' (the most likely one for them to know). I was referring, of course, to the book character, not the movie one. But no-one in my class has read the books  so I had to settle for movie-Frodo.
Anyway, when my friend asked 'Am I American?' I protested loudly when everyone said yes (I could only say no- saying he was from the Shire would have been a bit obvious). Then, when they agreed to something ridiculous (Can't remember what it was) I accidentally said 'No! That wasn't Fr-' Which caused the entire class to look at me- astounded that someone as intelligent as me practically gave the answer away. :p

Today, when I was rattling on to my mum about how beautiful Tengwar is, she started to have that look . You know the one, the non-LotR-enlightened one. So I said; 'Yes, I know you think I'm insane.' And she replied 'No, you're not insane. You're just weird.'
Which caused me to be very happy, and I told her it was a compliment for us 'Lord-of-the-Ring-holics' (direct quote from her) to be considered as such. I then commenced telling her about LotR-enlightenment. Afterwards, I began reading Ainulindale to her to demonstrate the beauty. I even read while standing outside my room, which is right next to the bathroom where the renovators are working, so they got an earful of glorious beauty as well. I was still reading 5 minutes later when my dad snatched the book off me (causing me to scream) and begin yelling 'Curse you, unenlightened people!' I now refer to my dad as Sauron.
Another example of LotR obsession-
For Psychology at school, we had to do this activity which involved writing down 5 boy's names beginning with S. I had to ask my teacher if it was specifically boys names she wanted, because I could only think of other male names. To which she said 'Well, aren't boy's names also men's names? What names are you thinking of?'
I said 'Never mind,' I couldn't very well tell her I could only think of 'Sam' (which was ok), 'Sauron' and 'Saruman.'

I'm so envious. Of both the number of books you have, and the fact that your mum understands. It's not hard to see why I have to turn to the 'Moot constantly, what with knowing NO-ONE who has read the books. Deadly serious.
Also, about that cheap Movie LotR. I hate them for some reason. I think they are ugly. I bought the ones that have John Howe's illustrations on the cover, and they were also much cheaper. I don't see the point of me buying any really expensive LotR books, as I will be too paranoid to take them off the shelf anyhoo. (Just in case a bit of dust sticks to a page)

04-04-2003, 03:35 PM
Well, in my pre-Entmoot days, I only owned 3 Tolkien books (two versions of The Hobbit -- one a paperback I got around 1983) and a big hardcover w/ illustrations from the animated movie [but it is the original text, not the movie text], and the copy of Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien), but I also had a 1977 Hildebrandt Bros. Tolkien calendar (which I still have) and a John Howe poster I got in 1992 (which is now in a cheap frame hanging in my bedroom) -- does that count? (Plus the R-B animated videos of both The Hobbit and TLotR, and the 45 of the R-B version of The Hobbit, well, okay that's from when I was a kid. Plus when I was a kid we had the four LP set of that movie [my bro has that now], and the book on tape of The Hobbit [not the animated movie, the real book read aloud, which my dad illegally taped from a record we checked out at the library], which my parents still have).
If I wanted to read LotR or The Silmarillion, I'd just borrow my dad's copies (an original hardcover 1977 Silm, which was the one I tried to read on my first attempt and couldn't get past the Akallabeth; and a three-book late 1960s Ballantine paperback edition of LotR, which has illustrations by Tolkien on the covers, one of which is actually supposed to illustrate a scene from The Silm, but they put it on the cover of TTT). However, when I became a 'mooter, I found it necessary to have the books... let's just say on hand at all times! So my brother bought me the cheapest version of LotR he could find at the store where he worked, which is a one book movie-cover edition (I had to pay him back. I am poor, so I have to go w/ the cheap stuff:( ) and then bought myself a paperback copy of The Silm. I have them all right here next to the computer, so I can cheat at the trivia games;) !
Thus concludes "The things no one wanted to know about Azalea's collection of Tolkien-related stuff.:)
But it shows my level of obsession, I guess. I wonder how many books other people had before the movies. If someone had the three main works, PLUS all the "other" stuff, including ALL the HoME BEFORE the movies, then I'd say they were probably pretty obsessed!
(I just had deja vu.)
edit: Oh, and I have a David Day book that someone gave me.

Grr, I have the movie cover LOTR, but my excuse is my sister bought it. I have nice covers of the Sil and the Hobbit: all black with a small picture on the front. I even put contact on the books so they don't get wrecked 'cause I thumb through them all the time.
Another obsession: I am seriously considering getting a LOTR tattoo. I haven't decided what yet.

3 LotR
My mum's old expensive purty hard-cover LotR (3 volumes)
2 Silmarillion
3 Hobbit
1 Lost Tales
1 HoME
1 Ruth S. Noel Guidebook for the Tolkien-Obsessed (I think GW knows what I mean...;))
1 Tolkien Reader
So let's see...that's 15! Wow...Okay, so one copy of the Silmarillion was to replace my brother's copy because it spent a month in my backpack, and is now held together by one heck of a lot of duct tape (it's like the Force: it has a Dark Side, a light side, and it holds the Universe together! :D). One copy of the Hobbit is the big hardcover one with pictures from the animated version which I think is the same one as azalea has; and the aptly-named (by GW) Ruth Noel Little Red Book of Horrors, which is most well-thumbed. Whee....I'm addicted....let's have a party! :D :D :D

hehe, in the party, my dad put a fire in the fireplace and we threw a ring my friend made (out of gold wire) in...we destryoed it!!! (actually, my dad found it the next day ..but thats not the point)

More ways to tell you're obsessed with LotR-
-You spend half of your time standing in your backyard, arms outstretched (no, not Lalia the fat style) in an effort to see why your friends there want to be tree-ish. You think they'd be much better off as Ents, but they haven't replied to you yet.
-Your bathroom is being renovated, and as such, you have a trailer full of bathroom bits (tiles, shower screens etc) in your front yard. Your parents will not allow you near this, because you have already told them that you wish to flood it because it reminds you so much of the Fall of Isengard (and the majority of the work Treebeard has done for you)
- No-one will talk to you because they know that it will take you ages to get to the point, and what you're saying is continually punctuated with 'Hroooom' and 'Don't be hasty'
- You will not use a telephone because they are cheap imitations of the Palantir. (The computer is different- that is the only way you may get to Entmoot
- You've collected as many clothes as possible for camp that will make you look like Faramir when you are forced to hike for hours there. (And when the enemy walks by, you will ambush them with bows and arrows)
- You shudder every time you think of the word 'Argon' because your friend used in place of 'Aragorn'
-You constantly get Tolkien-related words stuck in your head (Gothmog, Idril Celebrindal, Smeagol)

Yes.. sorry about posting the third time in a row. It's not my fault I have to be on when no-one can reply!
You know you're obsessed when..
-You chase after anyone who looks like they might be carrying a Tolkien book.
Yesterday, while working at my uncle's store, I saw a man walk in, clutching a book that looked suspiciously like a hardcover edition of one of the HoME books. I unintentionally made such a show of trying to get a look at the cover to see whether my guess was correct, that the man looked at me strangely and asked 'Are you ok?'. I was forced to sit back down and act normally.

You and your two best friends have ENT, MAN, and ELF as your names on MSN. We actually based this on which LotR races we were most like. I'm ENT, even though I'm a girl, because of our three letter symmetry.

You pick up weeds, transplant them into yogurt containers, then give them LotR names...actually, its a lot of fun!! I even measure them everyday...so far Merry and Sam have grown the most, and poor Frodo has a cut...mebbe the Ringwraiths visited overnight...hehe...

Someone posted a lembas recipe on here a long time ago, I think in the ME forum. It might be in the "Middle Earth recipes" thread, but if not, do a search of the word "lembas." Although I think it's a different one than Ninquilote made.
I got a paperback of UT today!:) I think I'll have to get Letters online. I found the Corebook of that roleplaying game, but I think it's out of my budget right now.:( I almost got Roverandom today, too, but it was $12! I think I'll check the library on that one.

here try this recipe. i havent tried it though.
What Tolkien says about Lembas
-They contain honey
-they are light-colored on the inside and light brown crust
-they are thin and regular-shaped. This implies they were made on some kind of griddle iron. The closest modern equivalent is a Krumkake iron. ( pizzelle iron)
Some other things we can guess.
They contain the fruit and maybe the flower-water of the Mallorn tree. I substituted oranges, although kumquats or a hand of Buddha fruit might be better.
They probably had some kind of finely ground light-colored nut in them. I used almonds.
They contained some kind of nourishing flour. I used semolina flour, which is a more primitive flour, and also more nourishing.
Galadriel probably used some kind of grinder to refine the ingredients. I used a blender.
The recipe:
3 eggs
1 cup honey (preferably wild honey)
1 tablespoon grated orange peel or three kumquats or one large finger of a hand of Buddha.
2 teaspoons orange flower water (optional)
3 oz blanched almonds
1/4 cup melted butter
2-1/4 cups semolina flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
Place eggs, honey, orange peel or other fruit, orange flower water, and almonds in blender. Blend on high for 3 minutes. Add 1 cup of the flour. Blend for 1 minute. Scrape into a bowl and add remaining flour and salt. Whisk or stir until well blended. Bake lembas on a pizzelle or krumkake iron 15 seconds each or until lightly brown. You may substitute a waffle iron but add a teaspoon of baking powder. The texture will not be quite accurate in a waffle iron.

You know you're obsessed when... you imagine what Frodo's quest would be like if he had to do it in your city.
I was doing this with my campus, and I decided the Forestry building would be Rivendell, and the Engineering building would be the Lonely Mountain. The biggest Parkade would be the Mines of Moria, and the neighbouring forest would be Lothlorien. The Japanese gardens would be the Shire. The largest, ugliest
Obviously there's some flaws, and my personal Middle-earth is far from complete, but that's the sort of thing Tolkienites do while walking to class!

I've just gotten back from camp. As soon as I came back home, I ran straight to my PC to get to Entmoot.
While I was away, I demonstrated several ways to show I am obsessed with Middle Earth etc:
-When we went to a museum and I saw the word 'tween' (short for between) in a display, I did a double-take because it reminded me of the start of LotR when Frodo was in his tweens
-I was envious of my friends who had pointy hoods on their jackets because it was more Faramir-ish than my horrible round hood
-Still at the museum, I saw a pretend blacksmith's workshop. I considered stealing some tools from there so I could make my own reforged sword, like Anduril.
-I again did a double-take at the museum when I saw the word 'ent' (someone's surname)
-Whenever I saw the word 'Jaguar' on my friends' clothes, I kept on thinking it said 'Tengwar' instead
-Everybody, and I mean everybody knows that I am obsessed with LotR
-My friends know that I will get furious if anyone criticizes LotR (I cracked it when they said Sam and Frodo were gay)
-My two most used nicknames are 'Lee' and 'Hobbit'
-My friend and I discovered that the other had read LotR and loved it, so we discussed it for ages. I now cannot call her by her real name and can only refer to her as 'Aragorn'
That's all I can remember now. Will post more later.
PS. Thanks for the lembas recipe. I'm going to make it soon. Yum

Yeah, that's true.. my piles of books have shifted from various places even today. First, they were in my room (where they should be), then to my living room when I was showing my dad my fave books (Silm followed by LotR). Then, they got scattered when I was reciting poetry from the books and teaching my family Mellon! and Mae govannen! (My dad can speak it very well now:D )
Today, I have worked out that my father is an Elf and my mother is Numenorean. (My dad is very good at Elvish, my mum too scared of LotR-ness to be an elf- she specifically stated that she is human) She is scared of LotR because of how it has taken over my life. :) Too bad that I can't be a hobbit, it would just be too strange a combination. :(
I am also teaching my sister some poetry. Now she knows the first 2 lines of 'Three rings for the Elven kings under the sky..'

OMG! That's exactly what my mum said! (Elvis) *shudders*
Some more ways:
-you forget the names for things in this world, and accidently replace them with words from LotR. When I was trying to tell my cousin about this ride called the Tower of Terror, I completely forgot the name and had to pause for a couple of seconds to recall what it was. (All I could think of was the Two Towers)
I even forgot my real name and accidently said Linaewen instead, once.
-You subconciously begin reciting Tolkien poetry (And apparrently walk around muttering things about Elves and evil)
Bombadillo
04-15-2003, 02:05 PM
You start taking notes in shorthand by referring to LotR. Example:
~ The Muslims were victorious over the Hindus because Hindu leaders would often fight among themselves= orcish Hindu leaders
~ The Hindus also had unwise battle tactics. They uses elephants as weapons, but they were easily frightened and the killed numerous Hindus as well as Muslims= Hindu oliphaunts were bad
But hey, it works. I passed the test. :)

My dad helped foster my LotR obsession, though he's not obessed himself. Here's some more.
1) You've posted over 30 times in this thread
2) You try to avoid wearing shoes, and roll up your pants, so you can pretend you're a hobbit.
3) You cite hobbits as examples of why short people are awesome. (I might have said that one before.)

The last day I always thought that I had a hobbit foot. Just because my foot is hurt and swollen and therefore I have plasters on it and then a bandage and over it the sock. My foot looks so huge, it just reminds me of Hobbits.
And another thing of my obsession:
In Biologie we talked about Evolution. That we have some things in our ears that remind of the pointy ears of animals.
All I thought was: Our the pointy ears of Elves.

1 Upon seeing someone crossing a bridge, you grab a stick from the nearest tree, and run up at them screaming "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!"

3 You never, ever, EVER let ANYONE touch your ring! That's right-YOURS! And why not? After all, you did find it...
4 You where an elvish cloak around all the time and if someone insults you, you warn them that you will smite their ruin on a mountainside.

Or AUS for Arts Undergrad Society, go Forestry!
I've been in this thread so long, I can't remember what I thought I posted and what I actually posted. But anyway...
You know you're obsessed with LotR when you compare the Faculty of Forestry to the Elves, and the Engineers to the Dwarves, and then you back it up with legitamite (sp?) points like, they are rivals, and these are things the Elves and Dwarves would actually study etc. I think Hobbits would be Agricultural Sciences, Men would be Arts, the Istari would be Commerce. Orcs would be the Teaching Assistants! (I'm only saying that because they went on strike for a month and caused students no end of trouble.)
Wow. (I'm done my exams, and going a little nuts. Bear with me here... ;) )

You are obsessed with Tolkien if you consider 'romance' to be:
A) Taking over a country and then using your political influence to get a spouse.
B) Going off on an epic quest to save the world and then coming home and marrying a person who hasn't even appeared in the story before, but has appearently been pining for you all this time.
C) Nearly getting yourself killed by an evil creature, and then meeting someone in the hospital who has done the same and falling in love.
D) Running off with the one you love to steal trinkets from the most evil and dangerous person you know.
E) Getting your sister pregnant.

-You constantly mix up Quenya with other languages- it takes you ages to remember what the word is in another language.
-You graffiti all you friends' school diaries with Tengwar and Quenya.. 'Mae Govannen! Mellon!..'
-You consider your greatest act of selflessness the time that you lent your poorly-deprived-of-Tolkien friend your copy of RotK. Because she loves the movies, and finds Aragorn & Arwen's story fascinating. Bit hard for you to break it to her that it is not very prominent in the books, and only really in the Appendices for 5 pages....
-Said friend, who has a LotR movie site, wrote a poem about Arwen and Aragorn, and you viciously edited it;
'Actually, the necklace isn't called Evenstar, that's her name. And it wasn't her immortality. And Elves were not the only ones with Immortality- there were the Valar, the Maia and other creatures. And "She gives her love, to who? Just a Ranger" sounds weird. I would say a Dunedain. Or Elessar, Estel, Dunadan, Heir of Isildur, Elfstone, Strider.....' etc etc...

You know you're obsessed when you borrow Tolkien books from the library. In languages that you do not know, such as Greek.
You know you're obsessed with Entmoot when you subconciously steal a quote from a Mooter - i.e Jonathan's 'tearing on my soul'. No need to know what he was referring to there. ;)
No, I was talking about myself. When I wrote it, it was 0.30 am and I was busy chatting with Ruinel and posting messages.

I do that with Ruinel, sometimes. Not really. Hmmm. Now it's with you that I will be spending the next 3 hours with. (Until 2 am)

yeah, our fate

It's no longer fate, though. We change topics so fast. Now, we are discussing a certain Swedish Mooter formerly with no eyes..;)

I was surprised that surprised you.

When you're reading that journal to which IP posted a link, and you know the name of each chapter that is coming up before you click to the next page, and you didn't even realize you knew the names of the chapters in order quite so well!

yeah talk about it! Our Orcs were chairs and our swords were little pool floaties! During our council of Elrond scene, the teddy bear that was elrond fell of the chair and we busted out laughing!

This is terribly embarrassing, but I have LOTR stickers on my diary. (Yes, they are movie stickers, but oh well). And when I went for a bush walk a few weeks ago, I sang Bilbo's walking song. :D
Dreran the Green

Hehehe...I love the walking song! I sing the bath song! Here's another way to tell you're obsessed: You have repetitive dreams that eagles are coming to take you away to meet Gandalf so much that you actually predict a date when Gwaihir will appear on your lawn and pack a backpack full of your most prized possesions to take with you.
Yeah, that was something of a let down.
Oh well. I post here instead now!:D

You refer to your bunkbed as a "flet"
You refer to your basement as Khazad-dum . . .
. . .and your oil furnace/water heater as "Durin's Bane"
You end almost any task you do with a bit of rest and a pipe
You fence in your yard and refer to it as the "Circle of Isengard"
You've tried making chain mail out of soda can tabs.

Fantastic Anglorfin! You must be truly obsessed.
What about: you think the hash browns at your high school cafeteria look like lembas. (That was totally the case at my old school, it's just that they were wrapped in napkins instead of mallorn leaves.)
Or how about: Your school lunches consist of dried meat, stale bread, and a corner of lembas for extra energy. You have a pot hanging from the outside of your pack. You wonder why your caf doesn't serve stewed coney.

Yes. I protested at school about their lack of lembas. Shocking it is... *shakes head*
