View Full Version : Quote Game - Part 12
Valandil

Let's see if we can keep this going! Here's how we play:
Basically, you take a quote and remove every second letter, and put a slash between words, and punctuation marks. A solution must include all words solved correctly and the correct speaker identified. Whoever solves the last element, be it quote, speaker, or both, posts the next one. It is not necessary for the one solving to say who it is said to, anything about the context, or what book it's found in.
Example: "I/_i_l/_i_e/_o_/a/_a_e/,/_n_/I/_h_l_/c_l_/y_u/_t_n_."
Answer: "I will give you a name, and I shall call you Sting." Bilbo Baggins (from The Hobbit)
Anything from the books: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game. No movie quotes.
Suggestions for posting:
Some gamers find this method best, fastest, easiest and most accurate. When you've found your quote, type it all in without blanks, simply using the '/' instead of a space, as well as before and after each punctuation mark. Just after a punctuation mark can be a convenient place for a carriage return, if the spacing looks good. After typing, check for spelling and to see that all the words are correct. Then go through and replace every other letter with an underscore '_' - this goes quickly if you use the 'forward arrow' key to advance, use the 'delete' key and then add the underscore where the letter was.
Oh - and we try our best to solve the quotes without looking them up. However, if the one who posted the quote is away or not responding, a player may look up an attempted full solution to see if it was correct before moving on and posting the next quote.

Next up to start a Quote will be either Midge... or me! :)

"Rohan? Ronan did you say? That is a glad word.
We seek that land in haste from long away."
Halbarad?
Midge
05-16-2014, 01:38 PM
away is wrong, but the rest is correct. I'm quite impressed at how quickly you got the speaker!
Valandil
05-16-2014, 10:19 PM
Well, sure! Who ELSE said that? ;)
"afar"?
Midge
05-20-2014, 03:52 PM
Halbarad would not have been who my mind jumped to first.
"afar" is correct, so your turn posting!

I'm stealing a quote just to mark my subscription to the new thread as it's my 4000th subscription. Cor.

betray the King?

spies
Earniel

Quote is correct with Varna's addition and correction. Any guesses toward the speaker?
"Would you then betray the King? For you know well the charge that they make against us, that we are traitors and spies, and that until this day it has been false."

Midge
06-17-2014, 05:51 PM
This is mostly guessing (except for the "the"s and "and"s and "to"s - those I think I got right). :D
"Yet it was in the song.
For while thou wert in the heavens and with
Ulmo built the clouds and/_o_r_d/_u_/the/_a_n_/,
I lifted up the/b_a_c_e_/o_/great/_r_e_/to receive them/,

Valandil
06-17-2014, 06:45 PM
All that guessing is entirely correct! Keep it up! :)
Midge
06-18-2014, 10:21 AM
ALL of it? Whoa...
Valandil
06-18-2014, 06:43 PM
Here I thought this one would be challenging - and you're making it look easy. Please continue. :)
Earniel
06-19-2014, 08:34 AM
"Yet it was in the song.
For while thou wert in the heavens and with
Ulmo built the clouds and poured/_u_/the rains,
I lifted up the branches of great trees to receive them,
and some sang to Iluvatar amid the wind and the rains."
I'm not conciously leaving open a space so someone else has to finish, but none of the words I associate with pouring fits the space so I really don't know and checking would be against the spirit of the game.
Speaker is Yavanna.
Midge
06-19-2014, 01:05 PM
tHat's "out".
Valandil
06-19-2014, 09:18 PM
All correct and fully solved! Your turn Midge! :)

Duh. 'out'. Seems so obvious now. (Doesn't it always?)
Midge
08-12-2014, 11:46 PM
Hey. I believe I accidentally solved the quote. I'll post one soon, but if someone wants to jump in... in the meantime, I won't be TOO offended. :D
Valandil
08-13-2014, 02:04 PM
Go ahead. We don't want to risk offending you AT ALL!

Ho! Here we are!
Merry?
Midge
02-26-2015, 03:19 PM
I'll have to look it up - I'm fairly certain the last part is right, and the first word is wrong, and the speaker is incorrect. I'll check and post back.
Varnafindë
02-27-2015, 06:59 PM
Hi instead of Ho?
But I don't know the speaker.
Midge
03-02-2015, 11:06 AM
Yes, miraculously, I found the quote again! Not Ho, nor Hi. Just start going through the alphabet, I guess, huh? Only 24 more options! :D
Varnafindë
03-02-2015, 02:33 PM
Ha!
(And I'll do the vowels before the other 23 options :D )
Valandil
03-03-2015, 07:37 PM
You need to guess on the speaker too, Varna. Here, I will try again.
Bilbo?
Midge
03-07-2015, 02:16 AM
Not Ha, nor Bilbo. :D
Varnafindë
03-07-2015, 07:09 AM

BTW - you're free to do as you like, but it may be easier to work on this, since it's a bigger one, if you show solves and attempts as part of the whole. Like this:

It was about Arathorn and Gilraen, but Elrond was not the speaker.
Midge
04-08-2015, 12:55 PM
It literally was the "Hope may be born for our people" that gave it away. If that hadn't been in there, I probably would have thought it was about a couple of historic elves that I only heard about once.

04-19-2015, 07:44 AM
Gimli?
I'm wondering if this is somebody speaking - when Halbarad brought word to those he met near Isen?
Varnafindë
04-20-2015, 05:06 PM
And "her words" would be Galadriel's words then, I think.
Not that it's part of what we are to solve, but sometimes it's fun to go further into some of the quotes ...
Midge
04-20-2015, 05:12 PM
Quote is complete. Gimli is not the speaker, nor is Halbarad. The quote is in reference to Galadriel's words, though.
Valandil
04-20-2015, 07:42 PM
Aragorn?
Midge

Nope. Keep trying.
Varnafindë
04-23-2015, 02:21 PM
Boromir.
And that's by logic, not by guessing - hope my logic is right ...
Valandil
04-23-2015, 06:21 PM
I think Boromir was already dead.
Eomer?
Varnafindë
04-24-2015, 08:15 AM
When Halbarad brought word to those he met near Isen, Boromir was probably dead - but I think this was far earlier than that.
I think this was soon after the Company had left Lothlorien, when they were discussing Galadriel's parting gifts. If that logic is wrong, I don't know who could have said it ...
Valandil
04-24-2015, 01:42 PM
OK - I hadn't thought of that.
We'll see... once Midge helps us continue our speaker guessing! :D
Midge
04-27-2015, 10:39 AM
Nope. Did I find a passage that the illustrious Varna and Val both forgot about???
Varnafindë
04-29-2015, 03:57 PM
Could it be Legolas, then?
I think the next speaker is Gimli, saying 'at least she sent you some words'. And then my first setting would have been too early.
It's a real challenge, this - and it's great fun! :)
Midge
04-29-2015, 08:30 PM
It was Legolas. They had just met back up with Gandalf, who had come to Fangorn through Lothlorien and had messages for each of them from Galadriel. Gimli was sad she didn't say anything to him, and Legolas was trying to console him by telling him that he didn't get what she said.
Varnafindë
04-30-2015, 01:24 PM
So that was when he was sad about her missing words.
A very interesting quote hunt!
The next one isn't a very long one, but it's what I'm providing at the moment ;)

"The storm has burst at last. This great /_r_a_/o_/s_e_r_/ and /_w_r_s/_s/
_o_n_/ to Osgiliath. Will Faramir get across in time?

It isn't Gandalf, as I mentioned earlier.

The context of that last word suggests a name, but I can't think of any names (save the ones we've already mentioned) that fit. I mean, you have "yonder", "bolder" and "colder" that fit also, but those aren't names.
So my assumption right now is that it's a slightly obscure Hobbit name, whom Merry is referencing, and I don't recall it because it's been so long since I've read the books.

It wasn't a 'guess' Midge -it was the answer :) which i guess you should perhaps have 'guessed' by my telling you the answer was literally staring you in the face, given i had literally posted it above your reply! :D
If you recall the scene of the opening of the doors of Moria, the answer is literally written above them! :D
Perhaps i should have added a quotation mark on 'wonder' for the sake of absolute clarity, but quite honestly i thought using the missing word wonder, with speaker and context should have been more than enough!
Especially as the Quizzer himself had said on the 30th of January:
Nobody knows or nobody wants to solve? Need a hint?
So forgive me for stepping in.. or perhaps interrupting?
.. but i had thought the correct speaker, at the barrow and the last missing word would clearly be enough to at least solicit a reply? At worst, surely you would expect the quiz master / current Quote Riddler to at least reply to the post, to clarify, if they, like you had any doubt, rather than just completely ignore the reply for 3 and a half weeks, and then say to you 'correct' within 26 minutes or without back checking for previous replies first?
Now i'd put the delay down to Val moving house and not thought anything of it :) and how you got mellons to fit in to those letters was hilarious :D
However,as for who takes the quote next, that is clearly up to Val to respond to, and perhaps also explain why he didn't reply to a players answer? Im hoping it was just an oversight, which is why i replied on the 28th feb.
Or perhaps you are right, and you two consider this game your own personal game of 'ping pong' .. and no others are encouraged to post or are welcome here?
I sincerely hope that is not the case, but if it IS the latter, would you two just please make that clear to everyone, instead of wasting peoples time and making them feel bad?
If it isn't the case, as i hope, then its up to Val to adjudicate.
Best wishes, BB :)

BB - you already took this discussion to the Teacup Cafe, so I responded to you there. So once again, here's the answer I already gave you:
Well... you DID put the word out there, and it was clear to me that you knew it was the solve. But you didn't give the word as though it was a solution, and never claimed the solve for yourself. So I thought you might not want it - and I decided to hang back and see what happened. And I didn't know if you'd be back in a day, or six months.
If you really want the post, you can do it. But you'll have to follow the rules of the game (see its first post) and you'll have to keep on top of solve attempts.
So go for it - if you really want to do it. But you have to play the game by the rules.

Yeah, if you read back through them, I kind of see how it played out. Not realizing you'd made a guess, I kind of just took off with other guesses and since you seemed to want me to figure it out, Val probably assumed you were hinting, not guessing.
and how you got mellons to fit in to those letters was hilarious :D

Let me make one thing VERY clear. The Quote Game is always more fun when more people participate! It makes it more of a competition to get the right words first, instead of just getting them at all. When I said it was like Pong with Val and me, I just meant that we two are the only regular visitors to this thread - other people will pop in from time to time and guess, but it seems to me that everyone else is VERY careful not to guess the last element so they don't have the responsibility of posting the next quote and checking back on guesses (*quick evil eye around*:glance:).
So let me be clear (as you asked): COME ONE, COME ALL! COME PLAY THE QUOTE GAME! IT'LL BE FUN! THERE MIGHT BE VIRTUAL COOKIES!
And if I did do something to make you feel unwanted or anything negative, I truly apologize. Even though I am far from perfect, "Make other people feel bad" is not on my to-do list.
Now, according to the rules (http://entmoot.com/showpost.php?p=673416&postcount=1), you get the next quote if you want it. You gonna post?
Earniel
03-12-2016, 02:04 PM
BB, you're reading too much into it. It's near impossible from the context of your earlier post to deduce you meant that one word as part of the quote. You can't blame us for not noticing.
Now be a dear and give us a quote. :)
[...]but it seems to me that everyone else is VERY careful not to guess the last element so they don't have the responsibility of posting the next quote and checking back on guesses (*quick evil eye around*:glance:).Yeah, about that... I have to say that sometimes- more often than one'd think- the final word does elude me and I kinda feel bad because I think people will suspect me of doing it on purpose out of laziness. :p

Yeah, about that... I have to say that sometimes- more often than one'd think- the final word does elude me and I kinda feel bad because I think people will suspect me of doing it on purpose out of laziness. :p
Well, it's the FINAL word for a reason. If it were easy, we'd have guessed it back when we got all the "the"s and "and"s.

On to / s_e_h_r_s/. But mortals have not been our study. We have other/ _u_i_e_s.

'On' is wrong, the rest correct.

"Or to shepherds. But mortals have not been our study. We have other /_u_i_e_s."
Don't remember if he was named - but I think the speaker was an Elf of Rivendell.
"shepherds" was tough, until I got that "or" - and I've got to hammer out that last word. The words that first come to mind don't fit. Common enough problem in this game. :)

Regarding the quote, all correct so far, just the last word needed. :)
Regarding the speaker, I can confirm the speaker has a name, and that name will be required.
I will not, at this point, without an actual guess on the speaker's name, either confirm or deny any supplied speculation on the speaker's species or their situational scenario at time of speaking.... but if it helps any, i will confirm (at least to the best of my knowledge) that the speaker was bipedal :D

That's the way to do it!
"junipers"?
Galdor?
Butterbeer

Junipers does fit, and indeed makes great Gin :D
So top marks for a fun answer :)
Sadly, not correct.
Galdor makes more sense (but not as good Gin) but is also incorrect i'm affraid :)

Erestor?

Hubby looked it up and told me the answer. :( Now I can't guess.

Wasn't Erestor i'm afraid.
That's a shame Midge.
The speaker is fairly obscure, but Val's first instinct was on the right lines :)

'business'?
Butterbeer

Business is correct :)
Just the speaker now.

Is Gildor a thing? I'm thinking maybe it was said to Sam and Frodo in the Shire... in that one place.
Oh, it's definitely been too long since I've read my Tolkien.
Hubby only told me the word. Not sure he even paid attention to the speaker.

Maybe you're right Midge. I was thinking this was from Rivendell, but maybe it's that meeting in the Shire.

Good gracious! Gildor and Galdor? Tis' neither i'm afraid. Your first instincts were on the right lines Val, although it's fairly easy to imagine Galdor saying it in the woods too, so good guess Midge :)

The speaker will be tough for me to get. I'm wracking my brains to remember the names of any Elves who Bilbo was talking to at the time.

Well, given the speaker is somewhat obscure, should i give a clue do you think? :)

Up to you. We sometimes do that. :)

I was going to try Glorfindel, but obscure he is not and I think Val about already exhausted all my other shady elves-options! :D Without looking up I'm stumped.

Ok, ill try some clues for the speaker :)
Pick one...
Clue 1)
Cryptic crossword (type) clue:
Formers and latters... combine them!
...a Swiss Chocolate House (3)... and an animal that rhymes with part of my Entmoot name - (3) :thumb:
Clue 2)
Anagram: letters in no order...
Take a vowel, a consonant that rhymes with a hot drink, a letter used in Roman Numerology, consonant that rhymes with a word to fight or somewhere to bathe, a consonant that rhymes with a (shortened version of) a name, and finally a vowel please
oops.. reason for edit- forgot a letter..sorry England just equalised against Germany... :D
------
Have fun! :)

You're really upping the ante on this one, BB. I like it!
I didn't look in the spoiler code boxes though. Do I need to - to have a chance at the clue? Or are clues found in the cryptic statements you give, and looking at the spoilers gives it away?
PS: Interesting how the smilies show through the spoiler gray-out. I don't think I had ever seen or noticed that before. :) Smilies must be powerful!
