View Full Version : Quote Game - Part 12
Valandil

You are correct! Nice job. :)
Varnafindë
02-18-2018, 05:57 AM
I know you were going to say that! :p
But no, alas, the last words DOES escape me.
I thought to say as well in my previous post, but I seem to say that a lot in this game and the last word remains elusive an equal number of times that after a while even I don't believe myself anymore.
Tell you what, though, whoever finds the last word and if he or she doesn't feel like posting a new quote, I'll do it. To make up for all those last elusive words.
Can I leave my posting rights to you this time, Eärniel? Days are a little busy now ...
Valandil
02-20-2018, 12:33 PM
Wow... Eärniel has not been on Entmoot for over two weeks! A surprise for sure, but we won't be hasty around here so it's not a big deal. ;)
Earniel
02-21-2018, 09:37 AM
Hoom! Yes, this Ent has been caught napping. But what do you expect, it isn't even spring here yet! ;)

A week later is the first day of spring here - and it is also the coldest day of this winter so far!
I'm only briefly out of bed, so I won't do any quote solving now - but then I know that it's there to be tackled later :thumb:
Valandil

"One left as if there was an /_n_r_o_s/_e_l/ behind them,
/_i_l_d/ up with ages of /_e_o_y/ and /l_n_/,/s_o_/,
/s_e_d_/ thinking; but their /s_r_a_e/_a_/s_a_k_i_g/_i_h/ the present;
/_i_e/_u_/s_i_m_r_n_/o_/t_e/_u_e_/l_a_e_/o_/a/_a_t/_r_e/,
or on the ripples of a very deep lake."
Forgot we even had a quote posted! :) Have tried to solve some random words here and there, but can't make anything of it yet.
Valandil
03-03-2018, 10:35 AM
Came up with a few more words to try.
"One left as if there was an /_n_r_o_s/_e_l/ behind them,
filled up with ages of memory and long, slow,
steady thinking; but their /s_r_a_e/_a_/s_a_k_i_g/_i_h/ the present;
/_i_e/_u_/ shimmmering on the /_u_e_/l_a_e_/o_/a/_a_t/_r_e/,
or on the ripples of a very deep lake."
Probably didn't need to bold my new tries, since the first were not reviewed yet. Oh well...
Earniel
03-10-2018, 09:13 AM
Apologies for disappearing. Blame it on the polar vortex visit.
This is what's correct so far. I had to think hard for a moment there to remember where I had taken the quote from!
"One _e_t as if there was an /_n_r_o_s/_e_l/ behind them,
filled up with ages of memory and long, slow, steady thinking;
but their /s_r_a_e/_a_/s_a_k_i_g/_i_h/ the present;
/_i_e/_u_/ shimmmering on the /_u_e_/l_a_e_/o_/a/_a_t/_r_e/,
or on the ripples of a very deep lake."
Valandil
03-10-2018, 11:20 AM
"One felt as if there was an enormous well behind them,
filled up with ages of memory and long, slow, steady thinking;
but their /s_r_a_e/ was sparkling with the present;
like sun shimmering on the /_u_e_/ leaves of a /_a_t/ tree,
or on the ripples of a very deep lake."
Is Merry the speaker?
Just realized I initially had an extra "m" in shimmering. :p
Varnafindë
03-17-2018, 11:43 AM
a vast tree?
Earniel

Only two words left!
Merry is not the speaker.
Valandil
03-18-2018, 01:59 PM
surface?
Pippin? Maybe he WAS the more poetic one.
Earniel
03-28-2018, 08:26 AM
The quote was attributed to Pippin at a later age, so that might explain the acquired poetry skills. ;) So, yes, correct.
Surface is also correct.
One more word!
Valandil
03-28-2018, 09:14 AM
OK - I've really struggled over that last word, trying different letters, and letter combinations. It's got me puzzled... and it's not even that many letters to fill in!
Earniel
04-03-2018, 05:14 PM
Heh, I'm not surprised, it is not an obvious word. It would be one of those final unsolved words that would stump me time and time again if this was somebody else's quote, rather than my own. :p
Want a hint?
Valandil
04-03-2018, 05:48 PM
OK - yes, a hint please. This has gone nowhere for too long. :)
Earniel
04-09-2018, 07:06 AM
HINT: the last word refers to the position of the leaves.
Valandil
04-09-2018, 08:04 AM
Ha! "outer"???
Earniel
04-09-2018, 09:57 AM
Dingding! We have a winner.
Valandil
04-10-2018, 09:24 AM
Only took me a month and a half! :D

There's no rush. :D
"Ride on! There is no other way to have...."
Valandil
04-11-2018, 03:38 PM
My book is at home - and I'm not - but I think your last word, "have" is incorrect. The rest is right. :)

Valandil
04-11-2018, 11:52 PM
Those words are all correct Varnafinde!
Valandil
04-21-2018, 03:33 PM
Bump in case everyone forgets we're playing. Or... are you stumped? Or... bored of the game?
I'll also update the quote. Not a lot left to solve.
"Ride on! There is no other way to /_a_e/.
After so long a road should we be held back
from battle by a /_i_e_-m_s_?"
Varnafindë
04-21-2018, 03:46 PM
Stumped.
Earniel
04-23-2018, 04:30 AM
take?
Valandil
04-23-2018, 08:38 AM
'take' is correct. :)
Valandil
04-23-2018, 05:23 PM
Hint needed on the last?
Valandil
04-25-2018, 03:36 PM
Hint on the remaining part of the quote:
Compound word, two parts - both parts have to do with "water", neither part starts with a "w"
We also need a speaker...
Varnafindë
04-25-2018, 07:11 PM
If I'm allowed to guess only one of the parts - is the second part 'mist'?
Valandil
04-25-2018, 11:50 PM
Sure - and YES! :)
Valandil
05-06-2018, 11:31 PM
This is a UT quote, if that's helpful to know. Probably makes it less familiar...
Varnafindë
05-09-2018, 03:39 PM
Probably makes it less familiar...
Indeed ... :(
Valandil
05-09-2018, 04:43 PM
Sorry. Have you read them? Or had it just been a long time?
Varnafindë
05-11-2018, 08:30 PM
I've read them, I own them - but it's been a rather long time.
And there are some parts I've read less than other parts, too.
Valandil
05-11-2018, 11:03 PM
Other hints then:
The other half of the compound word... like I said, it has to do with water, and these are generally named.
The speaker is riding a horse. That's pretty clear. But it is significant. And... it's a significant horse!:D
Earniel
05-16-2018, 10:45 AM
Hmm, stumped on both at the moment...
*trying (and failing) to remember what horses there are in UT*
Valandil
05-18-2018, 12:47 PM
Story from Third Age Middle Earth, about 500 years prior to LOTR. Gondor in a time of need, and gets help from...
Valandil
05-18-2018, 12:48 PM
And Gondor's help is not coming from Galadriel. At least not directly...
Varnafindë
05-18-2018, 06:53 PM
Rohan? Eorl? Riding the great-great-x times-great-grandfather of Shadowfax?
Edit to add the quote on a new page:
"Ride on! There is no other way to take.
After so long a road should we be held back
from battle by a /_i_e_-mist?"
Valandil
05-18-2018, 11:54 PM
Yes, Eorl was the speaker. Felarof was the name of his horse ( I think).
Just the first half of hyphenated word left. And I've mentioned a different person who might have had something to do with it. ;)
Varnafindë
06-15-2018, 12:29 PM
You mentioned Galadriel ...
And you said something about waters usually being named.
Perhaps the first part is the name of a river or a lake or even some marshes ...
Still stumped for the actual word/name, though.
Valandil
06-16-2018, 12:12 AM
Hint - the missing word is in your post.
Varnafindë
06-16-2018, 06:13 AM
River? :)
Valandil
06-17-2018, 08:57 AM
Yup! "river-mist" is the entire word. :)
Your turn!
Varnafindë
06-25-2018, 07:12 PM
I'm working on my tax report. Will post something when that is done.
If someone else wants to post a quote in the meantime, feel free :)
Valandil
07-02-2018, 05:46 PM
Nobody seems too antsy about this game anymore - so just post when ready. :)
Valandil
08-10-2018, 12:58 PM
Bumpetty-Bump! Do we resume playing, or continue on break for awhile? Is September a good time to re-start? On or before September 22? :D
Varnafindë
08-11-2018, 11:29 AM
September might be a good idea. Possibly earlier than the 22nd.
I've been to hospital, that's part of why I haven't been around for a while. Home now, feeling much better :)
Earniel
08-13-2018, 06:48 AM
Hoom, we never were very hasty these last years... September is fine. ;)
Midge
10-03-2018, 04:47 PM
I'm so glad this is still going. Been a lovely long while, and you've gone through two quotes in a year and half. I'll try to check in periodically and make sure I contribute.
Edit: I skipped from page 11 to 14, so it probably was more than two quotes.
Valandil
10-04-2018, 08:21 AM
Ah - and it's October now! Varna - do you want to take your turn? :)
Varnafindë
10-08-2018, 10:11 PM
I'll post one tomorrow.
I've been to hospital again, with an infection which made my right-hand eyelid go all swollen, and which was followed by iridocyclitis - but I'm mending fast now, so I should be able to handle a quote game again :)

Sounds like something Glaurung would say.
Hard to believe I couldn't get "forsake" the first time around. In that last sentence - all the small words made it hard, but I finally started to string something together. Even then... much of it could be wrong. :D
Earniel
11-07-2018, 09:39 AM
Not Glaurung.

"So you forsake your father and his kin,

Drawing a blank on the speaker... or the context. Sounds like something that's being said to Turin, but I'm not certain.
Valandil

Heehee, I was wondering whether someone would pick up on that. Eöl, jerkdad number two, it is!
Well done! Your turn, Val.
