Syriana. I was so tired I fell asleep half-way through it. I didn't care much to see the ending, either, especially when I found out they killed off Alexander Siddig.

Sleepy Hollow Creepy and funny at the same time. the the parts I laughed at involved Johnny Depp fainting or look as if he was going to upchuck.

The Grudge. I liked it, but am keen on getting hold of the japanese original. Plus, watching me deer ole Buffy gettin' haunted is kinda getting old. She's a sweet gal, but maybe someone else would have been better for the film.

"He was a headless horseman I tell you!! Headless! And he was a horseman, and he had no head! Headless, man: a headless horseman!" *swoon* LOL!!!!

The Best Years of Our Lives. Delightful old film about three soldiers trying to adjust after WWII. Loved it.

The Forgotten; very strange movie  but still worth watching.

Rosie Gamgee

I didn't like The Forgotten much. The ending was too dumb. But I will always take my hat off to that magnificently done T-bone; when they're driving along and suddenly WHAM that car crashes into them. It's so amazing because you see it coming, and it still flips you out. Again, I take my hat off to the makers of the moment. Brilliant.

I think my bro and I watched the Japanese original on Russian TV (how's that for ya? ;) ); it scared the hell outa him.  :(

Recently seen: American Beauty and Silence of the Lambs. Both very, very good movies.

Those were my exact feelings while watching it! Another moment that got me jumping in my seat was when that detective woman was saying to Telly (telling Telly :p ) that she believed her, and out of nowhere she gets blown off into space: freaky.

Yeah, that made me jump. And it is weird because it's such a dumb stunt, really (what, she gets sucked up into the sky? Like an invisible vaccuum-cleaner?), and yet instead of making you smirk or laugh, you get creeped out.
The two things that really, really, creeped me out were that weird contortion of the bad guy's face near the end; and when the police officer is shooting him and nothing happens. That was so creepy!

Today I watched Kitano "Beat" Takeshi's movie "Hanabi" ("Fireworks"). Personally I really liked it but I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. It's reeeeally slow moving and not a lot of action, and also it's kinda depressing. But if you're willing to sit down and watch and pay attention I thought it was pretty decent. There were some scenes that I don't know if they were supposed to be funny, but just hit me in a spot I didn't even know existed in my sense of humour and made me laugh. If you didn't know, it's a Japanese ganster movie about this cop who kinda starts going over the edge when his friend is shot, and his wife is sick. I really liked the side story about the friend and his painting hobby too.

Saw V for Vendetta again.. I really like the language they use, and how they use it. And even the violent scenes were quite beautifully done. It's also quite hilarious at times, for the references it makes to our world..

The Lifeboat, by Alfred Hitchcock. Wow...it was based on a story by John Steinbeck, and I can really tell! Very interesting examination of human nature...especially with that lingering last question.

Rosie Gamgee
08-15-2006, 01:32 PM
Inside Man. Not bad. I think that the ending was badly handled and that the story-behind-the-story thing with Plummer was poor. I was expecting a sort of smart, Robert-Redford-Paul-Newman-in-The Sting kind of ending, but it just dragged toward the conclusion. But the makers assembled an amazing cast, and most of it was well done. Bravo.

I also just watched Eight Below, kind of disappointing IMO. I thought it was sort of boring, but the animal actors were great.

and wrong story from me. I had thought that when she said "it was pure bliss" she had given in to him, but this source has it different. Why would you end a Time article about this with "It was pure bliss", which implies something quite contrary to the truth?

Oh, gods...I'm don't remember EVER seeing a movie with a cheesier title. Or premise. Or tag line. "Sit Back. Relax. Enjoy the Fright." I hear that the producers are playing this out intentionally to be absurd. Apparently, when the director wanted to change it, they told him, "Hell no, we only bought it because of the title!"

two of my elder sisters watched Pride and Pejudice (the new one) in a college theatre showing...they said it was, actually hilarious. They said if it hadn't been so entertaining, it would be simply bad; that at least it was funny...and it all comes down to, of course, that actress of recent sucess: Keira Knightly....

It's not a bad movie at all, but after all I had heard about it, it wasn't as good as I expected.

*laughs* I guess you can look at it that way also.. It gives me a great feeling, though. Don't kmow why nudity is that horrible.^^

hectorberlioz

Well, I guess it depends on what "not that horrible" means :p ...as Bill Clinton once said "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is". :p ....ok, I'm just spewing nonsense.

But it comes down to this: I have not seen it, and if it is one of those movies where the sole character is pretty much only a nude mademoiselle, it aint worth seeing ;) ...Nudity in movies is distracting, I can't believe you don't know that already... :p

The Guardian. Well done! I didn't think Ashton Kutcher had it in him, really. He and Costner played off of each other really well, and the story was well-told. I really enjoyed it.

The Crucible. Wow! The acting in this movie was amazing; the way the actors carried off the dialogue was wonderful! And speaking of the dialogue, the writing was amazing! Hats off to Arthur Miller. I really enjoyed it for the writing and the acting, even if the story was a little.. different. Real good.

No spoiling or anything; just friendly advice: don't get your hopes up. A lot of people liked it, because the things that they liked in the first were perpetuated in the second. Personally, the things I liked about the first made very rare appearences in the second.

It was over a month ago but, Clerks! That's a great movie. I am reminded of it so much by real life- I know someone who does work as a Clerk at a gas station, or when I go to Family Video, or whatever. I was kinda worried today would turn into a Clerks day. It was the whole "Let's go to lunch [at 12]" and the relief didn't show up until 2.

Well on a four day free weekend with the STARZ package, only one movie seemed worth my effort to watch; "Sahara". Boy was I wrong. What a lousy, contrived, unbelievable movie. All it did was reinforce the idea that Africa is a dirty dusty place.

...goggling this I see that location shots were done in Morocco, which certainly has beautiful deserts and a couple of really nice cities (which I've visited) and found:
On location in Morocco, the company shot in several locations, including a lake near Marrakech, but most of the desert locations were filmed near Erfoud, a tiny town on the edge of the Sahara, near the Algerian border.

Never the less-the impression of Africa stands.

Of course I want to discuss the issue itself also! I guess discussing your statement, in my mind, would involve discussing the issue; if we're discussing how unscientific Al Gore's movie/book are, it involves discussing the controversal works themselves, don't you think?

Oh, and I'd love to discuss that page you linked to aswell. There are good points, but there are also less good points in there.

And, just because I liked the movie and think it might even make people think about what an important issue this is, it does not mean I support it fully. There is something between black and white; there are other alternatives than being with someone and being against.

(Maybe I should just start a thread on this..:D)

The whole thing is a slow boil: the first ten minutes are almost slow-motion, and by the end you're on the edge of your seat. Peregrin, is that Elf movie the one with Will Ferrell? I love that movie! Hilarious; I thought; 'course I think Will Ferrell is the bomb. He always cracks me up. I loved his movie Anchorman, another great comedy.

Giant - that was an amazing film, really great stuff. Just watched it two times in a row over the last couple days, with my boyfriend. Directed by George Stevens, starring Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, Rock Hudson, Dennis Hopper - a very long movie, like three-and-a-half hourse long, but you won't be bored. Excellent classic, this... It's so cool to see the young Dennis Hopper, too. They were all so young in this one. Rock Hudson was 28, Dean 23, Taylor 23 or 24, Hopper must've been like 19.

Yup. ;) I agree that Will Ferrel is very funny, even though I haven't seen many movies with him (mostly because some have innappropriate stuff in them).

I think the word "inappropriate" is absolutely hilarious. Seriously! What does "inappropriate" really even mean? Not appropriate - but why? Ah, well, never mind, don't listen to me...I just always thought that word was funny. :D For real! I'm weird that way.

Watching a documentary about Napoleon tonight. It's very interesting. I love Napoleon.

Admittedly, 'appropriate' is really a matter of point-of-view in most cases...

The Island. Pretty good, but a little too much in the way of 'special-effect-bonanza'. Just lots of unneeded and--inappropriate ( :p ) --explosions. I liked Ewan McGregor playing two different roles in the same film. It worked really well.

btw, Lotesse, I love your sig. I use that quote all the time!

Oh - my wife and I just saw that last night ourselves!

VERY good... interesting study of how some can get wrapped up in a (demanding, all-encompassing) job! Lots of surprises... probably not what you'll expect! (unless maybe you'd read the book - which I had not. there's a book?)

We just saw "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" over the weekend - and were very disappointed.

Great concept, lousy execution.

As if the idea of someone dating - and then breaking up with - a super-heroine wasn't enough... the guy seemed like a total jerk anyway and they tossed in a REAL loser for his best friend. I thought interplay with more normal people would have been more interesting. After all - there was this contrast with "G-Girl" anyway.

Anyway...

Charlotte's Web: I liked the old cartoon better, but that might just be nostalgia.
Museum: An entertaining little movie; Ben Stiller is funnier than he has been recently.
Apocalypto: Very good. Some historical inaccuracies, but I throughly enjoyed it.
Bells of St. Mary's: Great old movie. Not sure why it was labelled as "Christmas", though. :p

Happy Feet - A cute little movie. I love the Amigos!

Happy Feet
Was a well animated film. The penguins were very cute, especially the eyes. If you can, you should see this film at an IMAX theatre. It is an intense experience.

Some problems I had with the film:

Too long (IMO) for a children's film. (about 100 minutes)
The film seemed to be two films in one - 1st two-thirds primarily about Mumble fitting in with the other penguins, final third with a strong environmental message. A single focus would have been better IMO.
The sea lions were briefly introduced in one scene and never seen again. It would have been more interesting if they appeared again.
The orca whales made an odd appearance as well.
The ending seemed odd and a bit out of place.
Some of the songs did not seem appropriate for younger (and possibly some older) children. Maybe not quite PG-13, but definitely questionable IMO.
It would have been nice to see a wider variety of songs sung by the penguins. They seem to use more pop songs that you would hear in North America. (I guess penguins only listen to songs with English lyrics. ;))

I agree that the amigos were funny. (Made me think of a Cheech(sp?) and Chong(sp?) film.)

Grazie! Oh, yes I absolutely love that film Kingdom Of Heaven, and the script is just the bomb - so much beautiful quotable stuff there...

What I've seen recently? Lately it's been all about the Italian Masters, antonioni, bertolucci, Rossellini, my favourite was L'Avventura by Antonioni - an absolute masterpiece, uterly peerless poetry on celluloid. A must-see for any true film buff.

Then, Out Of Africa - oh, Must See, Must See!!!! If you're anything like the romantic that I am, you will cry uncontrollably and happily and with such passion, seeing Out Of Africa, and it will cause you to yearn to go there and see it for yourself. Sydney Pollack is a filmmaking and directing genius, total genius. And all you classical music lovers out there will agree, the score by John Barry is phenomenal, and unforgettable...

No, but very cool - sems like you've seen the Katherine Hepburn/ HUmphrey Bogart classic called African Queen, which is a phenomenal piece of filmatic artwork, but no, Out Of Africa comes along much later - it was released in 1985, staring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and I very highly recommend it. It - you will not get bored. You will be riveted the whole way through, and - well, it's stunning, and so moving, and if all you puritanical types are worried about possible - what was it called? "inappropriateness," well there's none of that in this film. No swearing, no violence (except when she fights the lioness, which was SO damn cool!!!) and no sex. The beauty of this film is in just the suggestions of what is needed to carry the story along, and in the story itself, written by and describing the experiences of Isak Dinesen, the Danish writer, when she went to Africa in between 1913 and 1920 or so, beautiful breathtaking Kenya and the Ngomo hills, trying to do her coffee plantation and fighting lions and fighting for the people she shared her land with, and fighting to possess (and ultimately losing at this) the one man she really fell in love with, and the scenery and feeling of this film will make you dream, literally dream at night in your sleep, of Africa, Africa, Africa...

Pan's Labyrinth - Now that was an AWESOME movie. Plus, by a wierd stroke of fate, they had the director there after the showing! Yay, Guillermo del Toro!

Apocalypto - Also good, not as good as Pan's Labyrinth.

Happy Feet - Meh. It had too much and (as previously noted) too repetitive music for my taste. Also didn't like the whole anti-religion thing.

I saw it with my family, and they grumbled about the environmental message afterwards, making me distinctly uncomfortable. Hey, I'm an environmentalist... :o

Yes it is possible, especially if you still allow your children to be vaccinated; these elites stated that they want the world population to be reduced by 90% eg Dr pianka a UT proffessor. If something like that happens to be sure it was by design buddy.

"North and South" - not the mini-series based on the US Civil War, but a BBC movie adaptation from a novel set in mid 19th century England. Some similarities to "Pride and Prejudice" - but different too - and various other issues included (like the emergence of labor unions in industrialized towns).

Interesting... and quite good. :)

A) As I recall, the main character had no religious inclinations, a la Kingdom of Heaven, while the bad guys did. That qualifies as anti-religion. But anyway, religion and dogma are more or less the same thing.

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects

B) I approved of the environmental message, but there was way too much music for my taste and the same old misfit-who-finds-his-way story just bores me to tears, these days.

The dragon's in Eragon had pug noses and short necks. The reason for the short necks is because they could not get Eragon and Saphira's heads close enough to take a reasonablely close up picture. I can see the reasoning, but really! :)
