Proof: kinda wierd. How do you get the ideas for these movies? Sitting around and smoking pot, till suddenly: "Hey, I got it! Let's make a movie about a really important (and rather vague; something about prime numbers) mathematical proof of dubious authorship!"

Limbo: Good movie, I think. I'm not sure what to make of it right now, but usually I end up deciding I like those movies.

I've heard good reports about that movie.

Saw 10,000 B.C.- Good. I enjoyed it mighty well. Coulda been better for sure, but overall, pretty nice as a movie. Not a great history lesson as far as I could tell...

I've heard so many people rave about this movie. I might have to wait until it comes out on DVD before I can see it.

I just had a Hellboy marathon. The 2004 movie and the two Animated movies. I'll prolly do it again in a couple of months ;)

watch them again then go see Hellboy II: The Golden Army in july

No Country for Old Men. Brilliant! I can see why it got an Oscar. The realism of the story is magnificent.

Certainly, IMO, the pinnacle (to date) for the Coen brothers. 'Twas an outstanding film. Truly the best I've seen on the big screen for a wee while.

Enchanted--Well done. Cute as a chick-flick, funny as a look at how the ideals of an animated world work in live-action. But I confess I don't see what the hype about Amy Adams is.

That's the plan. Knowing me, I'll watch HB II a few times in theaters. lol

Just saw 10,000 B.C.~ pretty good. Charaters were likable, but I'm sure it wasn't too much of a history lesson. Just a movie

Leatherheads. It left a teensy bit to be desired in the way of movie-making, but was very enjoyable. I loved the costumes and the sets: amazing. It was laugh-out-loud funny in many parts, and the plot and premise concerning the beginnings of pro-football was very interesting.

Just re-watched Life is Beautiful with my husband and oldest son (husband's 2nd watch of movie; son's first). It starts off so nutty and cheesy (hmm, food, anyone?) and I could see my son thinking "what a stupid movie!", then gets really funny and he got interested, then of course ... :(

It's a good movie with some good and interesting themes - I wanted him to see it.

We watched the English-dubbed version, but personally, I kinda like the subtitles and hearing the Italian.

Mari
04-21-2008, 12:10 PM
Just like heaven... I love the gardens I saw in that film! And liked the film itself too ;)

La Vita e Bella is so sad! But I only saw the later parts and never the beginning. Reading Rian's comment makes me think that maybe I shouldn't have bothered with the ending and just watch the beginning... >_<

Ah, La Vita e Bella! Beautiful movie! I love it, definitely close to the top of my list. In Italian, it's simply amazing. Mari, you definitely should watch the whole movie. The beginning is very sweet and a good counterpoint for the last part.

Rían
04-21-2008, 03:07 PM
You definitely need to watch the whole movie, Mari - both halves are very important and tie the movie together. And one of the major points is that we can make beauty in the midst of the sadness. Very LOTR, IMO.

Mari
04-21-2008, 03:12 PM
Yeah, my cousin has been trying to force me to watch it several times now and I tend to get rather stubborn (or perhaps obstinate is the better word) when people try to force me into something...
I'll put it on the list though, if you say I need to watch it again. Somehow I value your opinions more than that of my beloved cousin :p
Please tell me one thing though (as I didn't see the exact ending either): did it have a happy ending?

Rían

Ironman was pretty good. Hollywood is getting better at making these comic-book movies. Much better than Spiderman, not quite as good as Batman.... But it's a real pleasure to watch Robert Downey, Jr. carry a movie again. I've always considered him a great actor. Gwenyth Paltrow was pretty good, too.

My sister was watching Cloverfield, so I saw parts of it too. It is a weird film. The plot is well... basically Manhattan is overrun again by some monster and again there are a few youngsters who have to run and save someone. And of course there's the necessary amount of blood and death.
The only remarkable thing about it was the way they filmed it.

I actually really enjoyed the film, I thought it was very visceral and well-done.

Indiana Jones- Supposedly done pretty close to the book, but I need to read it.

Iron Man- Very enjoyable, but some really cheesey lines here and there.

Spider-man- Just a brat getting his own way. Behind the scenes, anyway. The movies were all-right, but could have been done much better.

Movies I've seen recently were:

Prince Caspian: exceeded my expectations.
Indiana Jones: I didn't really enjoy at all. I don't know what it was... but yeah, not anywhere near on par with the original trilogy, in my opinion.
Penelope: watched online, looking for something cheesy and mindless. It was actually a lot more charming than I expected it to be (but, I can sit through just about anything for James McAvoy :) ).

Maybe I would have liked the film better if it wasn't about scheming, a lot of betrayal, adultery one character I could just shoot almost right from the start (spoiled brat) and an idiot father and #%@% uncle. I could have shot the uncle as well by the way.

I saw Iron Man last week, and I put it up there (easily) with Batman Begins as the best superhero movie ever. Maybe it's because I like what Brue Wayne and Tony Stark (Iron Man) have in common, but in both cases the filmmaking and storytelling was exceptional. Exceptional in all respects, not just in the Superhero movies world.

As for the new Hulk, I plan to see it. I liked the Ang Lee version a lot, though the funky camera stuff was off-putting (as it was in Mission Impossible 1).

I loved, loved LOVED Ironman. It was AWESOME.

However, last night I saw Indy...what a stinker.:p I mean, really.

They let me know in the first 10 minutes that the laws of physics had been cancelled, but it had the CHEESIEST special effects ever. It made old Godzilla movies look like Truffaut.

Which would have been alright, if it had had any characterization at all, but no.

I hope Shai LeBeouf gets material worth his considerable talents. The old people are past help.

The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising -- Pretty good. Apparently it's based off a book. I've never read the book, so I don't know how close it is to it, but I would have liked it if the battle between Light and Dark had lasted a little longer. It would have been nice if it was more of a struggle. Maybe it was supposed to be so short because he had been "battling" the dark throughout, but the actual battle was really short. It was a little scary for a PG movie (like for younger kids), but I don't think it's really scary enough to be PG-13, so I guess PG is a good rating for it.

Oh come on;). It'll age quite well. The Last Crusade and Temple of Doom were deemed unworthy sucessors to Raiders, but look how time has forgiven so much :D. It was relaxing.

It was a little scary for a PG movie (like for younger kids), but I don't think it's really scary enough to be PG-13, so I guess PG is a good rating for it.I adore the books. The movie worries me. :(

Oh come on;). It'll age quite well. The Last Crusade and Temple of Doom were deemed unworthy sucessors to Raiders, but look how time has forgiven so much :D. It was relaxing. If by "relaxing" you mean "soporific" count me in. ToD was, and continues to be, a complete waste of everything used for it, starting with the pins used in making the costumes. This was all that, plus a sentimental look back at the days we were talented and had an idea before going on expensive location.:p Last Crusade is Sean Connery's film.
And Iron Man was awesome. Finally a superhero who doesn't linger ten minutes over whether he should kill scumbags I loved him from the first scene. What a piece of work.:D But Gwyneth Paltro was amazing.

See, siscoz? Told ya. ;)Naw. The first one was a breakthrough.

...thus ended Tessar's life, with his Ultimate Dream unfulfilled. The very next day after his tragic death from hang-gliding, the dvd of 'Kung Fu Panda' was released. The world enjoyed the movie in home theatre, sitting with popcorn and caramel candy, munching as they quoted "Skadoosh" as they got up for bathroom breaks.

Gravestone heading: RIP Tessar: He loved Kung Fu Panda, but alas never got to own the DVD.

See, even though I appreciate that element (homage to a genre), it's not why the Indy movies are enjoyable.

If by "relaxing" you mean "soporific" count me in. ToD was, and continues to be, a complete waste of everything used for it, starting with the pins used in making the costumes.

They were all great. And Paltrow was really good in this. Usually she's Gwynth Paltry, but she was really awesome in this movie.

Naw. The first one was a breakthrough.

Bah. JS Bach didn't "break new ground," but his sons did. They still haven't caught up with him;). It doesn't mean everything. Breakthrough can take a backseat when it comes to having an enjoyable Indy movie:D.

What a horrible movie. At least what I saw, about the first 45 minutes is nothing but dirty women getting drunk and screaming loudly when bad things happen. I got extremely bored and tired of it, so I finally just got up and left.

I could've handled it except that they were constantly drunk or high and staggering around ineffectually, and I absolutely can't stand being around druggies or drunk people.

And he acts brilliantly. Superbly. There is not a second in the movie when you look at him and say "That's Heath Ledger under the makeup". Because it isn't. It's the Joker. Most definitely the best performance since La Vie en Rose. Maybe even better. It could be the best since Amelie.

Saw "Walk Hard" last night- spoof on music bio-pics like "Ray" and "Walk the Line", but done in a (mostly) affectionate manner- though the parodies of 60s Dylan lyrics were hilarious. Good, but not great - 3.5 out of 5

The Dark Knight was out of this world! The story was great, the lines well delivered and the acting wonderful. Heath Ledger's The Joker had some of the best lines IMO. And I really believed it when Gordon was "shot and killed" protecting the mayor. Surprised the hell out of me when he showed up and saved Batman when he knocked himself out

The emotional acting from Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart was great. And I couldn't help but say "wow" at Ledger's acting. Very dark and a bit on the creepy side.

I hope they end up nominating Ledger and I think a win would be great, but Hollywood is really reluctant to give Oscars to the dead.

Are you kidding? The very fact that he died is the reason he'll get the Oscar.
Here's my opinion: Ledger definitely deserves the nomination. I don't know who else will be nominated, so I can't say absolutely that he deserves the actual statue.
I thought it was an amazing performance, but considering the genre (sci-fi/comicbook), it wouldn't have been likely to even get a nod from the Powers that Be in Hollywood if Ledger hadn't died tragically before we got to see it.
I think that the man would have eventually won at least one Oscar. He'd always had that potential. I think that for that reason--that he's dead and will not get a chance in the future to act in a typically-selected-by-the-Academy movie (drama, historical, controversial)--he will almost certainly get the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor this season.

You've got a really strong point. I , too think he deserves the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Several people have recieved the nod after their deaths and only one has won. The name and year escapes me at the moment. But because he died before he and we got to see the final product is an even better reason for him to get the award.

Johnny Cash swept the award board at the Country Music Assosation's awards after his death, so I really think Ledger had a great chance at winning the award he deserves. He was a talented young man with a long career in store for him. Of the movies I've seen with him in (The Patriot, A Knight's Tale, Brothers Grimm) he had a talent of getting into character and making him his own.

I'm hoping they keep the next big villains in the storage box for #4. In the third film they should introduce The Ventriloquist, who has been the scariest villain as far as I'm concerned (though Ledger's performance makes The Joker that much more creepy).

No Riddler for now, please...or Catwoman. I'd like them to open up some of the lesser-known (to movie audiences) villains. Heck, I'd be willing to see a Rhas Al Ghul return.

And Acally, while Rachel (invented for the movies) is the only woman Bruce Wayne ever cared for, the only woman Batman ever cared for is Talia Al'Ghul ;).

The lesser known ones would be awesome.

Um, who was Talia Al'Ghul? *feels dumb for asking this* I love Batman but my dad wouldn't let me touch his comics

Nauti was right about Dragon Wars. It was corny and really didn't have a point but to display how stupid people are. "Let;s run into the long dark cave and see if our AK47's can hurt the giant snake and maybe it won't eat us!"

And the creatures were so stupid looking they were comical. I'm really glad I didn't spend the $7 to see it in theatres

Sleuth - the 2007 version with Michael Caine and Jude Law.

Absolute crap.

(Disclaimer- saw the original Anthony Shaeffer production in the West End in 1972- just had to drop that in :D )

The 1972 version, with Michael Caine in the Jude Law role and Lawrence Olivier in the Michael Caine role was great, and the new one opened quite well. After about twenty minutes- in the first big confrontation scene- it went off the rails, and continued to go downhill, substituting a silly homoerotic theme for the clever and vicious mind games of the original. Two thumbs down.

The Queen, with Helen Mirren as HRH Elizabeth II. GREAT movie. If you haven't seen this movie, you really need to. Wonderful. And what I really liked was the absence of crappy melodramatic hyped dialogue. This movie is as real as you could wish for in a cinematic masterpiece. And masterpiece it is!

Also: only one F-bomb and a few Ds. Otherwise, completely clean! Amazing feat for a Miramax film.

Ironic that the review is called "Waugh contra mundum". I saw the film last night, and there was precious little Waugh there. The iconography was present (diamond studded tortoises, skulls, teddy bears named Aloysius, Nanny Hawkins, Antoine), but the form had no content beneath it. It astoundingly turned the book all the way around, upside down, and inside out, the opposite in every way, but still called itself by the same name.

I didn't really see any hints of incest between Sebastian and Julia; this is simply a rumour perpetrated by outraged purists, I feel.

The article doesn't really say much about the movie, though. It's mostly an indictment of Waugh. As far as I can tell, the greatest crime is that it is a novel without a Father Brown, without a terribly clever religious figure spouting philosophical and metaphysical paradoxes which instantly convert the most hardened of criminals, and that the attempts the characters make at apologetics are clumsy. Well, if you want a Chesterton fairy tale, have your Fr. Brown. I'll take my flawed Flytes over him any day.

hectorberlioz

You obviously lump all actors into the same category ;). Harrison Ford is COOL actor, a good B-movie actor action-hero. He's never been one for the Oscar-material movies, except for Witness, or Mosquito Coast (which were OK movies).

Nobody argues Harrison Ford is a "serious" actor. Anthony Hopkins almost always does Oscar-material movies, and critics always praise him to the sky.

As I say, overrated :p.

my idea of good actors: Ralph Fiennes, Alec Guinness, heck Matt Damon is pretty good too, even though I dislike him ;).

What does this mean, "serious actor"? Is he humourless? Does he doggedly pursue the challenges of his vocation?

I.... beg to differ. I have seen Anthony Hopkins in a number of movies that I would not rate as Oscar-material (try Mission Impossible 2, and The Mask of Zorro for instance), and I contend that Anthony Hopkins makes movies Oscar-material. Take Fracture, for instance. That, in the hands of another lead, could have been nothing more than a lame teen-thriller. But he made it something great to watch. Hopkins is one of those actors that draws a movie up just because he's in it. He pulls his co-stars up to a different level of acting, raising the bar on whatever film he is involved with. And it's not that he's well-liked, either (I can't say Anthony Hopkins is on my top-ten-favourite-actors list), it's just that he's that good.

my idea of good actors: Ralph Fiennes, Alec Guinness, heck Matt Damon is pretty good too, even though I dislike him ;).

See, "B-movie" and "good" don't go together too well. "Action-hero" also has minor compatibility issues.

As I say, overrated :p.

As Ms. Gamgee points out, Anthony Hopkins regularly raises mediocre movies to a higher level. I mean, there's only so much you can do with Zorro, but the number of times I've seen a movie that clearly would have been quite bad without Anthony Hopkins, but his presence and acting skill bring it up, and even the other actors do better than they normally do.

I haven't seen Fracture, though I want to (because it has Vivica Genaux in it! :D).

I am beginning to think you are a snob, Gwaimir Windgem. Does an actor have to be limited to a period-piece to be considered 'good' on your sliding scale? An actor can't be "good" in sci-fi and/or action genres? [/serious question]

Nope. Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurasik from Babylon 5 are two actors who I think gave simply sterling performances in the sci-fi genre as G'kar and Londo Mollari, respectively. Peter Jurasik especially. Londo is probably the most interesting character I've seen in a television series, and he brings him to life with superb skill.

Heath Ledger was knock-out incredible as the Joker. I don't think there's been such a good performance for quite some time.

Now, to be honest, I don't watch that many sci-fi and/or action movies, so these are the only ones in those genres that spring to mind, though I'm sure there are a number of others who are very good actors. Bruce Willis, actually, I would call a good actor, as well.

I just posted a while ago that I quite liked the new Sleuth; this was primarily because Michael Caine and Jude Law (especially Caine, but both of them) gave simply incredible performances. This is a thriller we're talking about here; not exactly at the level of "period piece".

Another actor I think is really good is Johnny Depp. His characterisations are consistently spot on, and he saved Once Upon a Time in Mexico, much as Anthony Hopkins saves films.

So, unless Babylon 5, Batman, thrillers, and Johnny Depp are your ideas of "snob" material, the answer would be "no".

And by the way, I don't like a lot of period pieces. They tend to be sentimental and just portray an idealised, villified, or modernised version of their period, and spend too much time focusing on the period than on the characters. There are some exceptions, but by and large, they tend to be along those lines.

If we are going to stay on the topic of great actors, I'm going to throw in Doug Jones.

He is one of the greatest character actors I've seen. He's spent his entire career under heavy prosthics and makeup, thus the need to be highly talented. Some of the most talked about of his performances were in Hocas Pocas and Pan's Labyrinth. In Hocas Pocas, he played the Zombie that sproated off Shakespeare after undoing the bindings on his lips. In PL, he recieved rave reviews as El Fauno and The Pale Man. And trust me, the Pale Man just about made me not want to go to sleep. In the movies I've seen of him, a majority have used someone else's voice (Rise of the Silver Surfer, The first Hellboy movie just to name a couple). And he can be ubercreepy when he wants. (Fear Itself's "Skin & Bones" anyone)

The acting was great, imo. It's really not that different from RL people I know, minus the bedding of a king.

Actually, Henry, Anne and Elizabeth intrgue me. It's such a violent time period and you really don't see many movies that don't sugarcoat stuff. Like.... what did the alien do with Dallas and Brett when it just killed the other people and left their corpses there? Just rented "Miss Pettigrew lives for a day" - very cute! Francis McDormand's expressions are just hilarious in the first (very long and extended) scene - from complete incompetence and resignation to "hey, I'm not so bad at this" to "I rock!" Goofy, fun movie, and some good old-fashioned romantic ideals at the end. Very worth renting for a run, relaxing evening. And the music is really fun!
