Yeah, wasn't that just a great film? It really captures the feeling and mood of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, even if the story is widely divergent.

I quite liked it - but it is a film i think largely dependent on mood when you watch it.
If you are in a mood to be mildly entertained and to run with it - it's quite amusing - if you wish to be high brow- you will rip it apart.
I was in the former and quite liked it. *shrugs*

Lady in the Water. A horribly crafted movie. Paul Giamatti was pretty good, but he didn't have hardly any talent to work with. Bryce Dallas Howard was good, as well, but her part was so bizzare and minimal, when you came down to aspects of performance. I didn't like much about it, except for two things: 1) the score. James Newton Howard is such a great movie composer. Love his stuff. 2) Paul Giamatti's line in the beginning after being told that there's a 'creature' in an apartment; "There's no such thing as 'creatures'." Brilliant.
As a side-note: Shaymalan's ownacting skill seems to be improving, minimally, but it seemed kind of a bad decision (to me), to put himself in such a pivotal role when he's not really that great of an actor.

A Walk to Remember - It's a really great movie, but it's so sad!!! I started crying when she said she had leukemia. It's not even like it's only the very end that's sad. But still worth seeing if you don't mind crying (a lot).

Pirates of the Carribean 3: At Worlds End - Different. Unique. Weird. Some parts of it make you just wonder what's going on, and some things don't make sense until later on in the movie. All the action scenes were good, and there were plenty of funny parts, without it seeming forced. If there isn't going to be a Pirates 4, then it kinda leaves you hanging. But I would still suggest it because it's Pirates!!!

in theaters:
Stardust Excellent SEE THIS. Reminded me of Princess Bride.
Sunshine Pretty good. Second best film I've seen in theaters in a while (first being Stardust). If you can find it in theaters - see it.
Simpsons Movie good. like an extended good episode of the series. nothing special. but if you are a fan of the show at all, see it
Rush Hour 3 TERRIBLE. REALLY BAD. I liked the first two - but this was just BAAAD. Recycled joke after recycled bad jokes. Barely any action as well. Chan getting old.
Bourne Ultimatum Good stuff! Really good stuff. See this if you already haven't.

You don’t need to, but I would highly recommend that you do. They reference characters, events, projects from the previous two movies. You will probably pick up on most of it, but not all of it.
Better experience if you watch the first two. But you will still enjoy it and understand most of it if you haven’t.

I can't wait to see this Bourne Ultimatum, too. I heard it's really good...

Oh, yes!! There's three, it's a trilogy, the Bourne Trilogy, written by Robert Ludlum. The Bourne Identity was published first, in 1980, then came the Bourne Supremacy and then the Bourne Ultimatum. Seriously, and I am a super-picky literary-fiction-only kind of reader, but I swear Ludlum was a genius writer. Those books are amazing. You can't put them down, at ALL, once you start reading them. I so highly recommend Robert Ludlum's Bourne trilogy. Hell, yeah! The best, baby, the best.

I just seen The Night Listener, with Robin Williams. I really dont know what to say about that one. I dont like it, thats all I will say...
Also, Vacancy, It was ok, but the acting was a little dry. It always amazes me to see what actors do in situations like that, as opposed to a real person like myself, would be more confrontational. I give both a thumbs-down anyway.
Right now I am viewing Yngwie Malmsteen, Concerto Suite for Guitar and Orchestra, in e flat minor, LIVE on DVD. Nice...

Lust, Caution by Ang Lee (or, as we know him in Taiwan, Lee Ang).
Great, but slooooow- more caution than lust, though the lust is definitely there (NC-17 rating in the States) , and absolutely not gratuitous.

Hero. Beautiful movie. The best Chinese-flying-martial-arts-people movie I've ever seen. Anyway, the one which really matters is the first Godfather, of course. Don't knock it 'til you try it, babe, you're only cheating yourself. That film is a piece of art.

I agree. I'm not a fan of all that flying-around-waving-swords-at-eachother or running-through-treetops style of fighting, but visually in colours, props, setting and scenery Hero was quite a stunning film. I'd see it again, just for that.

I thought Hero was pretty good when It first came out. They worked hard to make it a pretty movie. ...And it was, but thats about all it has going for it.
I just seen Children of Men and It was a good show but I hate how movies end these days. They end leaving you saying what the hell was that?!
Thats all I am going to say.

Pretty much anything off the beaten track, but I like movies that are just good. You know, that have a good message and have good characters to carry that message. I really LOVE horror flicks, some sci-fi, few westerns, and that's about it. I'm not that diverse.

What are your 10 fav's? Of all time?
What exactly do you mean by good movies?
I just seen Transformers and Wrong turn 2, last night, and I liked wt2 way better. Possibly because I had a very low expectation for that one. Transformers, eh, not my thing really.
Horror is the only genre.
(I don't care if there is no message, as long as it grasps my attention and then I perceive it good.)
In other words, if it has guts in it, I will probably like it. Probably.

Transformers: guy-flick.
Made for 10 year old boys... imo

The message could also be "stay out of Japan". Gee, I watched Grudge 2 last friday. It was kinda scary, but I thought it should be way more frightening. But the scene where the journalist is watching the recording, and the screen is suddenly turned off, was creeepy. But I think I've had my share of japanese grudge movies for some time.

Last night I watched Kill Bill V.1 and was actually pretty bored. Quentin Tarantino has a great visual sense, but I can't help but feel that the guy needs more interests besides movies, because all his movies are about movies. It's like he can't create, only re-create.
I do plan on watching the second Volume, but only to be fair to "QT", since I haven't really finished the movie, so shouldn't really judge it.

1. Starship Troopers
2. Silet Hill
3. Blue Streak
4. Resident Evil: Apocalypse
5. Resident Evil
6. Band of Brothers (I know it's a mini-series, but who cares? :p :D )
7. 3:10 to Yuma (the new one)
8. The Ring
9. the Alien series
10. AVP
You'll notice there arent that many true horror flicks on the board, because, while
Horror is the only genre.

They arent coming out with many new good ones. I wish they'd make some of H.P. Lovecraft's stories into movies. And not made-for-TV ones either, actual movies.
And what I mean by good movies is...well, you have to decide what a good movie is for yourself, to me it is one that touches me in an intimate way, and i usually dont put those movies up on my top 10, because I cant watch them over and over. I dont know why. But movies like October Skies is one in my opinion.
Nautipus, I knew you were strange. Don't wory so am I. I want to see 30 Days of Night just because it's a vampire movie. Vampire movies are my fave in the horror genre.
Hehe, almost everyone here is *casts wary glance around room*
Vampire movies arent really my thing, but I'll watch em if they're good. I'm working on a looooooong story right now that involves vampires, werewolves, Dr. Frankensteins macabre experiments, and all other manner of Eoropean legends and stories involving the undead, and combining them into one story, which involves: intrigue, horror, and underhanded dealings by a huge pharmaceutical company. It aughta be good, at least I hope it will.

(you can learn a lot about someone by asking them questions)

Bambi has a lot of f*up views in it, anti logging, anti hunting, Whatever happened to the only the strong survive mentality? Bambi and Disney as well, is a complete joke. They teach children happiness and flowers when that isnt what life's about.

What I was wondering, was, 'What does Nauti-pus, perceive as good?'

What do I perceive as good? Hmm...interesting question. To me, it's good when it has a plot that grabs me, but by the soul, not the lapels. Like I said earlier, October Sky is one that did that to me. And most people see good movies as ones that are sad, and I agree to an extent. I dont really like movies that are all about "Oh, whoe is me, my life blows, what'll I do", I'd rather see a movie that goes along the lines of "Man, my life sucks. But you know what? I dont care. I'm gonna give the best I got and if i die trying, then I died with honor." I agree that a meloncholy spirit can bring out the best in people, or the worst. And i like to see movies where people dont so much stand up, but believe they can, and do. There's a relatively new western out that has that sense in it but I cant remember the name. In any case, to me a good movie is one that really grabs me. That makes me kind of go "Hmmmmm", if you get my meaning.

Hero. Beautiful movie. The best Chinese-flying-martial-arts-people movie I've ever seen. I still thought Curse of the Golden Flower was better, but the scene where the girl is killed in combat, and all the slowly falling-leaves changes from bright orange to brilliant red...that gave Curse a run for its money.
Agree with you on both counts.
The political/historical implications caused a stir in the Chinese world- here in Taiwan there was an audible gasp from the audience at the end- the equivalent might be a film about George Washington where he is slammed as a traitor at the end -for Americans, of course; the Brits might cheer.

Great! The book is far, far better.
Hated the movie, because the director makes a mockery of Heinlein's beliefs (which I generally disagree with myself). Be warned though, large chunks of the book deal with political philosophy- it was written as a polemic in response to calls for the US to quit testing nuclear weapons.

Saving Private Ryan ~ One of the very few movies that don't sugar coat wartime. Very graphic and to the point
I guess you don't watch too many war movies outside Hollywood eh? Try watching:
Kokoda (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481390/) - A very realistic movie of the Australian reservists defense against the Japanese in New Guinea
Stalingrad (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108211/) - Depicts the gritty urban battle and the struggles from the eyes of a German combat platoon.
Cross of Iron (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074695/) - A story of a German platoon battling the Russians a year after Stalingrad. James Coburn is Sgt. Steiner and Maximilian Schell is Cpt. Stransky. A bit dated as it was filmed without CGI, and a couple technical flaws (like Pvt. Ryan) but it has such a gritty realism to it, especially in the hand-to-hand combat scenes.
Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/) - A Korean movie about the Korean war. I recommend the sub-titled version as the feeling in the actor's lines DO NOT come across at all in the dubbed version. A VERY realistic movie in their use of explosions and CGI, and quite a gripping story as well.
You want Americans? then give the mini-series Band of Brothers[/b] (]Kelly's Heroes (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065938/) - A technically correct "war" movie set in France in mid 1944, it is sort of a black comedy along the lines of 'M.A.S.H'. or 'Catch-22', only with a strain that has you believe it all may have been possible. It has fun with parodies of Patton, and even a modernized scene right out of one of Clint Eastwood's westerns. Definitely worthy of a watch.

I Know who Killed me, Dumb. I hated it. Lots of stripping though, thanks to Ms. Lohan
(Where can I learn that stuff!?)
Superbad, Well, super bad.
Fracture, Cool thriller. Very interesting film. I always root for the bad guy...
Captivity, Was pretty cool. Didn't much like the ending, but it had a horror-show appeal to it as a whole. I enjoyed this one.

I didn't understand Rescue Dawn. It was so mainstream; that's not like Herzog at all!
Have recently seen: The Lookout. Meh.
Finding Neverland. A decent film about a creative mind, but it wasn't quite all there.
Knocked Up. What's the point?
The Island. Decent thriller, some good visuals, plot on the weak side, good message.
Curse of the Golden Flower (again). Simply beautiful. Stunning visuals, probably the most magnificent thing I've seen on the screen. Plot is decent as well, interesting twisted Byzantine Imperial Family politics, and the corruption and depravity of the characters (except Prince Jai) contrasts with the sumptuous background to make a magnificent portrayal of decadence at its height.

Agreed with what about 90% of the reviewers said; the first two-thirds are very good with the mood-setting and the suspense, and then it totally falls apart in the conclusion, which is really, really bad. The evil creatures are horrible, and I don't mean that in a good way.

That movie is difficult for me to watch :p. From a viewer perspective, I love it--love the singing, the sets, the story...
From a technical, musician standpoint I think it's absolutely horrific :p. Emmy Rossem does NOT have the voice for that kind of repertoire. As I recall, she didn't even hit the actual high note as written.

The Christmas holidays usually has re-runs from old 'classic' films they seldom give the rest of the year so I've been watching a lot lately. Finally saw The Sound of Music (singing nuns, now I've seen it all) Casablanca (a good deal of movie quotes got explained), Key Largo, The Blob (hi-la-rious), The Great Escape (doesn't end quite as well as I had thought) and The Von Ryan Express. I just saw Pinochio and I'm telling you: it's different from the version I have at home. In this version there's a whale and a strange island where he get's almost turned into a mule.
In the version I saw when I was a kid, there was a pierot and a secret room in a basement with a large glowing light. Or am I mixing up stories here? Anyway, it was nice watching. The cricket reminded me a bit of Hector. The same outfit :p He has a lovely voice (the cricket, I wouldn't know about Hector ;)).

The Pinocchio I have is the one with the whale and the island. Nice observation about Jiminy Cricket! lol I have heard another version of the story on the radio, but that was a very weird one. Pinnochio killed Jiminy Cricket in the very beginning, right after sending Geppeto to jail. He also almost killed the fairy on accident. And this was an old "classic stories" radio presentation!
Oh, that definitely doesn't sound like the kid-version...

Also, Rosencrantz and Guilderstern. If you have read Hamlet, you must see this movie! Two bit parts in Hamlet, those of Rosencrantz and Guilderstern, come and go with little fanfare. This movie takes these two characters and has them explore why there are in the story of Hamlet, what they are doing there, and why their parts in the story end the way they do. Very funny, very witty.

On Sunday I watched The Rock with Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage and Ed Harris. The acting was superb but the plot was sub-par. But hey, Michael Bay directed it and as long as there are gratuitous explosions, he's going to be happy.
I enjoyed The Rock but I wouldn't say it was a good movie. (And Mari, it is way too violent for you to enjoy anyway.)
At one point, numerous supporting characters are killed off just so Nicholas Cage's and Sean Connery's characters have to work alone. There was no plot-driven reason for it, and it came off as very contrived. Laaaaame.
Still, it's a fun action movie. There are better, but I'm not demanding two-and-a-half hours of my life back either. It did rate "Fresh" (62%) at Rottentomatoes.com (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1072011-rock/) but these are the same people that gave one of my favourite movies, Nomad (The Warrior) (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/nomad/) a pathetic 7%, so take that for what it's worth. Even though it's like a meta-analysis of reviews instead of looking at only one movie reviewer, you're still not always going to agree with the ratings.
