Butterbeer - your words are correct - do you have a more precise term for the speaker?

Also - if you solve, are you willing to post?

Butterbeer
08-02-2006, 03:36 PM
willing yes, but i have (this really belongs in da vent thread ....)

i have so little time .... i am literally exhausted

everyone ( in RL) seems to want my time just now, it's beyond funny.

I feel i need a rest.

so ...with the best will in the world, i think i know the blokes' name but have no real time!

how are you Val btw?

best, BB

Valandil
08-03-2006, 06:55 AM
Well... I don't think AMYONE really knows his name. Although I've made one up for him. ;)

There's a more correct title though - so who can give that to me, and post the next quote? :)

Count Comfect
08-18-2006, 08:56 PM
*bump?*

Midge
08-19-2006, 04:45 PM
uhh... the chief of something (like a tribe)?

Midge
08-21-2006, 10:51 AM
Are you guys even checking this anymore?

Valandil
08-21-2006, 10:19 PM
Yes - checking, and it was indeed chief of a sort of "tribe".

I wanted to see if I'd get any more - but why don't you just go ahead and post next.

It was the "Chief of the Lossoth" :)

Midge
08-22-2006, 12:17 AM
Okay. :D Hmm...

"Y_u/_a_s_d/_h_o_g_/t_e/_i_d_n/_a_d/,/

"You passed through the Hidden Land,
but it seems that you little understood its power.
If Men have dealings with the Mistress of Magic
who dwells in the Golden Wood,

Serenoli
08-22-2006, 08:04 AM
can look for strange

Midge
08-22-2006, 11:36 AM
yes, and mostly yes... "can" is wrong. Also, need a speaker!

Gwaimir Windgem
08-22-2006, 02:00 PM
'may look'

Midge
08-22-2006, 04:21 PM
Speaker time!!! Who is it? Doesn't anyone know?

Serenoli
08-22-2006, 11:51 PM
Aragorn?

Midge
08-23-2006, 12:31 AM
No. Try again.

Serenoli
08-23-2006, 01:56 AM
Ok, if you insist, how about Treebeard? (he's the only one I recall who calls Lorien Golden Wood)

Count Comfect
08-23-2006, 02:19 AM
Eomer?

Midge
08-23-2006, 11:01 AM
No and no... keep thinking!

Serenoli
08-23-2006, 02:13 PM
Faramir? (I just remembered that Merry and Pippin were not the only ones to recount their adventures to others)

Midge
08-23-2006, 05:09 PM
YES!!!!! It is Faramir! Good goin' Serenoli! Your turn... have at it!

Serenoli
08-24-2006, 07:10 AM
Cool... :)

Ok, here goes, a small one:

"W_/h_v_/./B_t/_u_/d_s_u_s_o_s/_e_a_/a_d/_n_e_/i_/s_o_e/./_t_l_/w_/f_e_/l_s_/i_l-_i_p_s_d/_o_a_d_/S_r_m_n/_h_n/_e/_i_."

Midge
08-24-2006, 07:14 AM
"We have. But/_u_/discussions/_e_a_/and/_n_e_/is/s_o_e/./
Still we feel less ill-diposed toward Saruman than we did."

Treebeard.

Serenoli
08-24-2006, 07:31 AM
Oooh, that was fast! All correct, except you missed an 's' in towards.. which doesnt really count... :) and its not Treebeard. Oh, and it isnt 'is'.

Valandil
08-25-2006, 07:26 AM
"We have. But our discussions began and ended in smoke (?).
Still we feel less ill-diposed towards Saruman than we did."

Oooo, 50-50...

Merry?

Serenoli
08-25-2006, 02:57 PM
Well done, Val, you got them all (there, I sound like Pokemon). Umm, except there's still a missing 's' which I didnt notice last time. This time in disposed. But its typo, I expect.

So, its your turn, now. :)

Valandil
08-28-2006, 06:03 AM
Swamped - but I'll try to get something up here in about 15-16 more hours - or a day after that.

If someone else wants to go ahead and post one, that's fine. Otherwise, if nobody has, I'll post as soon as I'm able.

Valandil
08-30-2006, 10:10 PM
Sorry I'm late, but work has been long. And yet even so... my quote will be short.

"T_a_/w_u_d/_o_/b_/e_s_/,/e_e_/i_/w_/w_r_/a_l/_e_."

Midge
08-30-2006, 10:50 PM
"That/would/now/be/easy/,/even/if/we/were/all/_e_."

Count Comfect
08-31-2006, 04:12 AM
not, met?

Valandil
08-31-2006, 06:58 AM
"not" is correct (otherwise, Midge's were all right) - "met" is not.

All we're missing is the last word and the speaker. :)

Serenoli
08-31-2006, 01:40 PM
men, Boromir?

Valandil
08-31-2006, 11:03 PM
Yes on both counts Serenoli. Your turn! :)

Midge
09-05-2006, 10:37 PM
Hey, serenoli ... come on... We are waiting here... !

Serenoli
09-06-2006, 12:01 AM
Oh, I'm sorry...

Here's the quote:

"A/_a_k_e_s/_i_s/_e_i_d/_s/_n_/w_/h_v_/t_r_e_/o_r/_a_k_/u_o_/i_/,/a_d/_e/
_o/_o_/d_s_r_/t_/r_t_r_/t_i_h_r/_v_n/_n/_h_u_h_/./W_s_w_r_s/_u_/h_a_t_/
h_v_/t_r_e_/,/a_d/_e/_e_i_v_/t_a_/t_e_e/_e/_h_l_/f_n_/L_g_t/."

Valandil
09-06-2006, 12:30 AM
"A darkness /_i_s/_e_i_d/ us and we have turned our backs upon it,
and we do not desire to return thither even in thought.
Westwards our hearts have turned,
and we /_e_i_v_/t_a_/t_e_e/_e/_h_l_/f_n_/ Light."

Beren3000
09-06-2006, 04:22 AM
"A darkness lies behind us and we have turned our backs upon it,
and we do not desire to return thither even in thought.
Westwards our hearts have turned,
and we believe that there we shall find Light."

Valandil
09-07-2006, 07:23 AM
Now who would have said a thing like that? I'm thinking a First Age Edain...

Beor?

Beren3000
09-08-2006, 02:36 AM
Oh my God, Val! I didn't post the speaker on purpose because I don't have time to post another quote, but I thought he/she would be pretty obvious!

Valandil
09-08-2006, 06:45 AM
Think again... or just give it.

Serenoli
09-09-2006, 03:44 AM
Well, Beor is correct, so Val gets the quote. :)

Beren3000
09-09-2006, 01:31 PM
Oh :o Sorry, Val, I thought it was Faramir

Midge
09-19-2006, 06:02 PM
man, guys... c'mon! It's been ten days. If you don't post in the next day or so, Val, i am going to.

Valandil
09-20-2006, 06:45 AM
I'm sorry Midge - life has been quite full the past several days, so I haven't gotten back and posted here like I intended.

Feel free to go ahead and post a quote. Or - if I come back around and have the time, I'll do it then if nobody has posted yet.

Midge
09-20-2006, 06:15 PM
i will... later. like in four hours... ish.

Midge
09-20-2006, 10:12 PM
Here it is: the long-awaited (no joke) for quote!

"A_d/_h_r_/i_/t_e/_a_k/_o_l_/a_i_/t_e/_l_d_e_/F_e_d_/,/
t_e/_i_g/_a_s_d/_u_/o_/k_o_l_d_e/_n_/l_g_n_/;/

Serenoli
09-21-2006, 04:39 AM
"And there is the mark _o_l_/a_i_/the/_l_d_e_/F_e_d_/,/
the/_i_g/_a_s_d/_u_/of knowledge/and/l_g_n_/;/
and even so much of its history is known only to a few.
And the Council of the Wise could discover no more"

Valandil
09-21-2006, 06:37 AM
"Gladden Fields"

"but of knowledge and legend"

Midge
09-21-2006, 08:00 AM
Here's what you have:

"And there /i_/the/_a_k/_o_l_/a_i_/the Gladden Fields/,/
the/_i_g/_a_s_d/_u_/of knowledge/and/legend/;/
and even so much of its history is known only to a few.
And the Council of the Wise could discover no more"

Count Comfect
09-21-2006, 09:48 AM
"in"?

Earniel
09-21-2006, 12:44 PM
"And there in the dark pools amid the Gladden Fields, the Ring passed out of knowledge and legend; and even so much of its history is known only to a few. And the Council of the Wise could discover no more"

Elrond?

Gwaimir Windgem
09-21-2006, 02:11 PM
I think it would be Gandalf.

(But if that's right, I'm sorry, I won't be posting a quote, so it's Earniel's).

Earniel
09-21-2006, 02:21 PM
That's rather cheap! :p

Gwaimir Windgem
09-21-2006, 03:16 PM
*Gwai - Passing the buck since 1985* ;)

EDIT: Seriously, though, I can only post in a library. And my Lord of the Rings is a single-volume edition. It would be rather troublesome to lug it all the way here. :p

Midge
09-21-2006, 05:00 PM
the quote is officially complete, but the speaker is incorrect.

Midge
09-21-2006, 05:01 PM
Okay, I lied. I didn't see this second page of posts. It was Gandy, Gwaihir. You win... but I see that you have passed the torch. So I guess you can have a go, Earniel.

Earniel
09-22-2006, 03:57 AM
"N_w/_u_h/_o_/t_l_/,/a_d/_e_/m_r_/I/_e_c_i_e/./_/d_r_n_s_/

Valandil
09-22-2006, 07:32 AM
"Now much you tell, yet more I perceive. A darkness
you would cast over the long road from /_i_i_n/, but I /_e_/
e_i_/ there, which Thingol should /_e_r_/f_r/_i_/g_i_a_c_."

doesn't sound very "hobbity" :p

Beleg Strongbow?

Earniel
09-22-2006, 07:35 AM
The quote is correct so far, but it is not Beleg.

Count Comfect
09-22-2006, 08:28 AM
"met evil" there?

Earniel
09-22-2006, 11:04 AM
Evil, yes. Met, no.

Count Comfect
09-22-2006, 04:47 PM
"see"

Earniel
09-23-2006, 03:57 AM
Correct. So far you have:

"Now much you tell, yet more I perceive. A darkness you would cast over the long road from /_i_i_n/, but I see evil there, which Thingol should /_e_r_/f_r/ _i_/g_i_a_c_."

Valandil
09-23-2006, 05:52 AM
"learn for his guidance."?

Melian?

*argh*... trying to puzzle out that last word - gotta be a place-name.

Earniel
09-23-2006, 02:31 PM
Indeed, all correct.

As for the last word, a hint: the missing word is a place.

Midge
09-23-2006, 11:29 PM
Okay, I am going on a mere guess, but the only thing I can get to fit there is "Sirion". Which isn't a place, it is a river. But whatever. I will jump in and guess... just in case it is true.

Earniel
09-24-2006, 04:47 AM
A close match, but not correct.

Earniel
09-26-2006, 04:21 PM
Another hint that may help solve that oh-so-agonizing last word: it's a city.

Valandil
09-27-2006, 06:49 AM
Ack... "Tirion"? :p

Earniel
09-27-2006, 12:40 PM
Tadaa!

Tag, you're it! :D

Valandil
09-27-2006, 11:15 PM
My pleasure...

"H_/i_/a_/y_u/_a_e/_e_n/_i_/.
H_/i_/t_e/_a_t_r/_f/_o_d/,/_a_e_/,/a_d/_i_l."

Gwaimir Windgem
09-28-2006, 12:46 AM
He is as you have been _i_. He is the master of gold, _a_e_, and _i_l.

Valandil
09-28-2006, 06:33 AM
Good start... all except "been" are correct. :)

Gwaimir Windgem
09-28-2006, 03:57 PM
'seen him'.

Earniel
09-28-2006, 04:11 PM
Water and hill.

I take it this is Goldberry speaking?

Valandil
09-29-2006, 01:06 AM
Oops - I forgot to say that "gold" was wrong in the initial quote.

I think I should go ahead and give it to Earniel - since from what I said, she solved the last bits.

The only thing is that it should be "wood" - not "gold" - but as I said, I failed to mention it.

Your turn again, Earniel. :)

Earniel
09-29-2006, 03:32 AM
"W_e_/I/_m/_u_m_n_d/,/_o_w_n/_l_d_w_n/,/_/s_a_l/_e_v_/i_/y_u_/k_e_i_g/

Count Comfect
09-29-2006, 08:38 AM

Gwaimir Windgem

Earniel
09-29-2006, 03:25 PM
All correct so far.

Sister Golden Hair
09-29-2006, 03:38 PM
Heir, short, and chances?

Earniel
09-29-2006, 03:44 PM
Correct, so all we need now is the speaker.

Valandil
09-30-2006, 06:50 AM
Hurin?

Earniel
09-30-2006, 09:40 AM
Yup. Your turn again.

Valandil
09-30-2006, 09:15 PM
You must've been thinking of the new book coming out. ;)

"A_v_d_i/_o_/s_a_l/_a_l/_i_/,/f_r/_e/_i_l/_e/_h_/l_s_/i_/A_t_e_a_n/.

I ran out of time. Didn't get to finish. Sorry. Others who will come after me will get to do that, I guess.

Valandil
09-30-2006, 11:54 PM
"in" + "them" are not right - the rest of the solved part is all correct.

Count Comfect
10-01-2006, 01:24 AM
A "CHOICE" and "change" his name

Earniel
10-01-2006, 05:28 AM
You must've been thinking of the new book coming out. ;)
Nah, just did the pick a random page thing. But you're definitely thinking of your FÃ*riel letters. ;)

"Arvedui you shall call him, for he will be the last in Arthedain. Though a choice will come to the/_u_e_a_n/, and if they take the one that seems less hopeful, then your son will change his name and become King of a great realm. /I_/n_t/,/_h_n/_u_h/sorrow and many lives of Men shall pass, /_n_i_/the/_u_e_a_n/_r_s_/a_d/are united again."

Valandil
10-01-2006, 08:04 AM
All correct so far Earniel... except maybe the "Firiel thing". It was more because Appendix A is the current chapter in the Discussion Project. :p :)

Count Comfect
10-01-2006, 10:32 AM
If not, then much sorrow...

until

Midge
10-01-2006, 02:12 PM
Dunedain... until the Dunedain cross(?) and are united again.

Valandil
10-02-2006, 12:30 AM
CC's and Midge's adds are correct - except for "cross".

Here's where we are now:

"Arvedui you shall call him, for he will be the last in Arthedain. Though a choice will come to the Dunedain, and if they take the one that seems less hopeful, then your son will change his name and become King of a great realm. If not, then much sorrow and many lives of Men shall pass,
until the Dunedain /_r_s_/ and are united again."

One word and speaker remain to be solved.

Earniel
10-02-2006, 04:22 AM
arise?

Valandil
10-02-2006, 07:07 AM
That's correct.

Who'll give the speaker...??? :)

Acalewia
10-07-2006, 09:18 PM
Elrond?

Valandil
10-07-2006, 09:28 PM
Not Elrond. :)

Earniel
10-08-2006, 03:40 AM
Fine, I'll bite. Malbeth.

Valandil
10-08-2006, 06:32 AM
You bit me! :p

Malbeth it was - your turn! :)

Earniel
10-08-2006, 05:10 PM
*nibbles on a piece of Valandil* :p

"I_/i_/e_e_/a_/U_m_/s_o_e/_o/_e/./_h_/s_r_n_s/_r_/p_i_o_e_/,/a_d/_y/_o_e_/
w_t_d_a_s/_r_m/_h_/w_t_r_/o_/t_e/_a_d/."

Count Comfect
10-08-2006, 05:18 PM
It is even as Ulmo spoke to me. The s_r_n_s are p_i_o_e_, and my power withdraws from the waters of the land.

Earniel
10-08-2006, 05:22 PM
All correct so far.

Valandil
10-08-2006, 07:30 PM
"strings"? (not sure it makes sense - but fits)

"poisoned"?

Rían
10-08-2006, 07:48 PM
goofball!

"springs" (Ulmo is lord of what? strings? ;) )

Earniel
10-09-2006, 03:40 AM
Jup, springs and poisoned it is. Now I only need the speaker.

Valandil
10-09-2006, 09:12 AM
Ahhh... funny how a more obvious word can slip right by you.

Not at all sure - is this Finrod?

(I'm thinking more likely it's a water-Maia or something, but I'm drawing a blank on names)

Earniel
10-09-2006, 11:11 AM
No, not Finrod.

Valandil
10-09-2006, 08:59 PM
OK - I didn't check the quote, but I verified that I had this name right (I had :p ):

Uinen?

Earniel
10-10-2006, 03:30 AM
No, not Uinen either (besides, she barely has a line of speech in the whole Silmarillion.:p)

Valandil
10-10-2006, 07:32 AM
Was it Melkor/Morgoth, by any chance?

Earniel
10-11-2006, 04:14 AM
Nope.

Rían
10-11-2006, 10:42 PM
Rats, I tweek Val on "strings", but I can't even come up with the stupid name!

I remember the quote, but can't remember the speaker

Valandil
10-11-2006, 11:24 PM
Turgon?

Rían
10-11-2006, 11:53 PM
Turgon kept coming to mind, but that didn't make any sense to me ...

Valandil
10-12-2006, 12:18 AM
I'm mostly trying to think of who talked to Ulmo...

Earniel
10-12-2006, 05:29 AM
No, not Turgon.

Oh, RÃ*an, you of all people should know who. :p

Rían
10-12-2006, 07:43 PM
You mean my Elven crush, Fingon? Or my human crush, Tuor? But what's confusing me is the "power" reference ...

Gwaimir Windgem
10-12-2006, 09:50 PM
I'm confuzzled, too.

See?

Earniel

You mean my Elven crush, Fingon? Or my human crush, Tuor? But what's confusing me is the "power" reference ...The power reference is what Ulmo said to the speaker of this quote.

Anyway, Tuor it is, your turn. :)

Noooooo.....

but you're in the right general area

Actually, you don't need to name this speaker - I doubt if anyone knows his name - just name him generally.

(and where was your quote, Eärniel? I can't find it! I'm soooooo rusty!)

Earniel
10-17-2006, 03:45 AM
I think I have a better guess to whom the quote was spoken then the speaker himself.

My quote is in UT, where Tuor and Voronwë pass the pools of Ivrin and they have been defiled by the dragon.

Rían
10-17-2006, 05:34 PM
ok, thanks!

As to the speaker - just name the general circumstances.

Ooh, I wasn't expecting that to be right. It just made sense because he was in love with her, after all. Okay, so new quote:

(but I think some of my other words are wrong - I just don't know which :p )

Earniel

If my guess of the scene is right, I think 'one great year' should be 'and great fear'.

Midge
10-21-2006, 12:26 PM
Okay... wrong words are:

"could", "one".

"fear", "better", and "both" are all correct

and it was Aragorn.

Count Comfect
10-21-2006, 12:42 PM
"would"

Midge
10-21-2006, 05:04 PM

I forgot to mention that Earniel got it right with "AND great fear". "and" is correct in place of the "one".

BB - someone had already given Aragorn as the speaker a few posts before - so they left me with just the easy part.

Midge - it's been awhile since we played that way, but we used to amuse ourselves throwing in a word that changed the quote a bit. :p Of course, it had to fit, and one couldn't win the quote on it - only accolades for the display of wit. (and in this case, Aragorn would have been wrong - there was no borst waiting for them either on the path or beyond it ;) )

I thought you weren't allowed to guess the speaker till the quote was complete?

Been observing my tactics huh? :D

Actually - the speaker can be guessed at any point. Most people tend to wait until the quote is solved (but they don't have to). And sometimes coming up with the speaker is harder than solving the words - but it can actually be given at any time.

But now... I don't think that's a very hard speaker on this last, do you? :p And all the quote is solved anyway...

Won't someone guess the speaker? :)

Earniel
10-25-2006, 05:11 AM
I think people like the guessing of the quote more than posting the next quote. Which is why it usually goes rather silent when only the speaker is yet to be named. :D

Not that I use those tactics, mind you. I am not hiding the fact that I know that it was Treebeard who said this. No, no hiding at all... :p

Valandil
10-25-2006, 06:50 AM
"sorry" - no, not Treebeard... :)

EDIT: Unless maybe he was given that line in the movie. :p

Count Comfect

Oh, and I also don't really have the books to do a quote from...

Earniel
10-30-2006, 03:49 PM
I don't think he said it in the movie, I just confused this quote with the bit about the lists of creatures Treebeard recites at one point.
