All correct elfearz... your go! :)

Short, easy one - elfearz was too lazy to make the 20 step trek to her Tolkien books, so google-searched a quote :o:p
"Y_u_/f_e_/c_m_/f_o_/t_e/_a_e_s_d_/a_d/_p/_h_/w_t_r/_o_/c_m_/w_t_o_t/_/d_u_t."

sounds Smaugish to me. :)

OK - a short one from me. In the "famous last words" category... :p
"A_o_/!/I_/y_u/_r_/i_/c_m_/o_t/!

OMG! I am so sorry guys! You can totally exile me if you want to. I just was consumed by too much stuff! *Smacking self in forehead*
Valandil
03-04-2006, 11:57 PM
Sorry - that's incorrect on the quote... :p ;)
(in other words - don't worry about it Midge... happens all the time. When we get tired of waiting, someone checks it and acts appropriately :) )
Serenoli

Valandil

'Ahoy' and 'plan' are not correct - and of course, Serenoli's part belongs after that first word that is not 'ahoy'. :)

Valandil

All we need is the first word and speaker. :)

Val, did you add anything? And did you Rian? It seems like Midge solved the last part. The quote's correct and so is the speaker...
She edited in the last part, which wasn't there while I was posting (her edit is later than my post). It looks like all 3 of us were typing at the same time! So I would say it's either Midge or me - my post time beat her edit, but her original post time beat my post (but it didn't have the entire quote).
Your call, Rad! :) What a close race that one was!

Well, when you put it that way, the rest of my quote doesn't really make sense.
Haldir! That is the one. I think he said this quote. :D
not "wears", not "seen"

It's now:

Valandil
03-17-2006, 11:37 PM
'bears' probably - but that other word is a toughie!
-elfearz-
03-18-2006, 01:37 AM

bears and hewn are correct!

Celeborn?
nope --
hint - it's an unnamed "they", but you need to guess race and situation....
hint 2 - who liked to cut down trees?

hint 2 - who liked to cut down trees?
That Numenorean guy who liked ships...with the unfortunate wife - Aldarion? :D
i have no guess for the speaker though
Valandil
03-20-2006, 10:01 AM
Ooo - that may throw me on the right track. I was starting to think "Dwarves" (they like to cut things, right? :D ) - but maybe this:
Numenorean Men from the time of Aldarion?
Not sure of any more exact situation though. :o
right story ... wrong race, Val...
the speakers are discussing a gift ...
Valandil
03-24-2006, 08:36 AM
Then is it Elves...??? Talking about Mallorn trees to be introduced on Numenor or something...???
Oops - maybe I shouldn't answer - I'm away for 36-48 hours. But - as much as this thread isn't moving, maybe it's OK - and if I somehow managed to be right, someone else can go if they're impatient. :)
That's correct - it's the Eldar talking to Aldarion as they brought their wedding gifts. They gave him "a sapling tree, whose bark was snow-white, and its stem straight, strong and pliant as it were of steel; but it was not yet in leaf."
He thanked them and remarked that the wood from it must be "precious indeed", and they replied what I quoted.
go ahead when you get back, or someone else can go :)
Valandil
03-26-2006, 08:54 AM
OK - so the hint about 'who liked to cut down trees' applied to the one being spoken to - not the speaker. :p
Will try to post later today - but someone else may if they have time and inclination. :)
yes, I was trying to remind people of the story - sorry if it was unclear!
Valandil
03-27-2006, 03:42 AM
No problem - I don't think hints (if given) need to be TOO clear anyway. :D

Actually BB- once the final part is solved, the one who solves the last piece gets to post next.
I'm guessing that elfearz was right - her answer definitely sounds better than mine.
And yes - we generally leave out the names of who said it - and guessing the speaker is part of the game - and we generally stick with a single quote, rather than a matched pair. :)

Yes - I was even thinking 'bear' or 'boar'
And first 'thorn' where I ended with 'shore'.
Radagast The Brown
05-08-2006, 04:39 PM
"iris grown" is incorrect. But 'boat' and 'shore' is right... 2 words and the speaker left. :)
So the quote is now (I think):
"Seldom in my life has any boat come out of the north,
and the /_r_s/_r_w_/ on the last shore. If you go forward, peril will grow
with every mile, even if you find a path."
let's see - first missing word "bris"? ;)

with every mile, even if you find a path."

Very good SGH - only incorrect words are 'alas' and the 'then' between the two unsolved words.
(and that's a lot of good solving for a long quote like this one)
Say - can you think of a speaker?

'away' and 'too young they said'

There are a few mistakes, but well done! :)
This is what's correct so far:
"It is not needed that the Ring should be found, for while it abides/_n/
Earth and is not unmade, still the power that it/_o_d_/will live, and
Sauron will grow and have hope. The might of the Elves and the Elf-friends is /l_s_/now than of/_l_/. Soon he will be too strong for you, even

The complete quote:
"It is not needed that the Ring should be found, for while it abides on Earth and is not unmade, still the power that it holds will live, and Sauron will grow and have hope. The might of the Elves and the Elf-friends is less now than of old. Soon he will be too strong for you, even without the great Ring; for he rules the Nine, and of the Seven he has recovered three. We must strike."
Yes, it was indeed Gandalf.
