Don't hit your head on the desk TOO hard Rian, or it would be a perilous wood indeed! :p

Sorry if I called undue attention to you - but I think I only thought of "wood" because you had just tried "good" and they rhyme - so really, you get an assist for helping me solve. :)

Strider! Him with a crown and all and a golden cup! Well, what are we coming to?

Dear Old Barly....

Valandil

All correct Midge - your turn! :)

"better" it, "value"

Valandil
05-28-2006, 11:22 PM
"dirt" - and Frodo?

Midge
05-29-2006, 12:24 AM
that's more like it! Where were all of you?

"Use all the wits and knowledge you have/o_/your own, Sam,
and then use the/_i_t/to help your work and better it.
And use it sparingly. There is not much here and I expect
every grain has a value."

No, not dirt. Yes, Frodo.

Valandil
05-29-2006, 07:54 AM
Californey...

"of" and "gift"?

Midge
05-29-2006, 09:50 PM
ohhh, nice.

Yeppers, you got it.

*I'm not gonna lie, the typo that Rad had up there with Forod made me laugh! Way to go*

Valandil

Sorry for delay - been tied up in a couple other projects. Hope to post tonight. If not up within 15 hours, the floor is open. :)

"Moreover, Arathorn is a stark man of full age,
and will be chieftain sooner than man looked for;
yet my heart forbodes(?) that he will be shortlived

S: Gilrean?

Valandil
06-03-2006, 08:39 AM
Wrong words are "stark" and "man" - "forbodes" is correct.

Speaker is not Gilraen.

Midge
06-03-2006, 12:28 PM
"stern", "men".

S: Gilraen's mother? (did she have a name?)

Valandil
06-03-2006, 01:09 PM
Words are now all correct.

Gilraen's mother was Ivorwen, but she was not the speaker. :)

Radagast The Brown
06-03-2006, 02:51 PM
Elrond?

Midge
06-03-2006, 07:17 PM
gonna try-- Gilraen's dad... (don't know his name either).. I know one of them had "the foresight"... thought it was her mom... maybe not.

Valandil
06-03-2006, 08:49 PM
It wasn't Elrond - it WAS Gilraen's father. His name was Dirhael.

It appears that both he AND Ivorwen had the long sight. :)

Your turn, Midge.

Midge
06-03-2006, 11:34 PM
I will post tomorrow morning... Gotta catch up on my beauty sleep. If you read this and want to post, you can... I posted the one before Val's too...

"Now if only it takes that ugly fellow a little while to get his troop under control, I've got a chance."

Sam?

Midge
06-04-2006, 11:27 PM
Not Sam... Close though, quite close.

Rían
06-05-2006, 12:17 PM
oh, it was Merry or Pip, wasn't it?

I'll guess Merry.

Midge
06-05-2006, 01:11 PM
Nope.

Rían
06-05-2006, 11:55 PM
Pippin? Or do I have the wrong scene in mind?

Midge
06-06-2006, 12:05 AM
WTG!!! It just happens to be Pippin! And if you are thinking about the scene where Ugluk and his orcs are fighting and Pippin seizes his chance to cut his bonds into a fashionable bracelet, you are thinking the right scene. So now it is your turn, RÃ*an!

Rían
06-06-2006, 03:36 PM
OK, I got the scene right, just guessed the wrong speaker - well, I had a 50/50 chance!

OK, coming up with a quote ....

"L_v_/n_t/_o_/w_l_/t_e/_o_k/_f/_h_/h_n_s/_n_/t_e/_e_i_e_/o_/t_y/_e_r_;/

Radagast The Brown
06-06-2006, 04:13 PM
"lieth in the West"?

Rían
06-06-2006, 04:39 PM
quote is correct, you speedsters! (and Rad corrected "is" to "in)

(I still can't believe what Tolkien geeks we are! )

Speaker? It's one of those kind of roundabout ones ...

Telcontar_Dunedain
06-06-2006, 04:57 PM
Was Rad not correct with the speaker?

Rían
06-06-2006, 07:04 PM
oh, sorry, I missed that!

Yes, he's right, and he got the last right part, so it's your go, Rad! :)

(I was just talking about Gondolin somewhere else, and so I had to do a Gondy quote)

Radagast The Brown
06-07-2006, 05:02 AM
Ok. :)

"B_t/_h_t/_i_/I/_a_/?/M_r_a_s/_a_n_t/_o/_r_n_i_g/_n_-d_a_g_t_/a_d/_x_e_t/

I guessed on a couple of those...

Radagast The Brown
06-07-2006, 06:04 PM
Wrong- Mariahs, so grinding, to come, love, then if I, put, fear... Try again! :)

Solved quote then:

"But what did I say? M_r_a_s/cannot/_o/_r_n_i_g/_n_-d_a_g_t_/and expect/
_o/_o_e/to/_o_e/of them/_h_n/_f/_/p_t/of/_e_r/./"

Midge
06-07-2006, 11:29 PM
Mortals cannot go drinking Ent-draughts and expect no more to come of them than of a (could there be a mistake... was it supposed to be a "pint of beer"?)

I know who said it, but since I have done two of the past four quotes, I will leave the answer open to anyone for a couple of days.

Radagast The Brown
06-08-2006, 03:56 AM
Everything is correct except the "pint"... there's no mistake there. :)

So one word and the speaker left..

Valandil
06-08-2006, 06:44 AM
C'mon Midge - I've also been "up to bat" a lot lately! :p

"pot" and Gandalf?

Midge
06-08-2006, 02:17 PM
Well, I feel bad... Maybe other people want to post...

Ok, the speaker just happens to be male, and is a talking tree and his name is the name of a forest, too... His name speaks of facial hair,....

Treebeard/Fangorn!

Radagast The Brown
06-08-2006, 03:07 PM
Quote's correct, but the speaker is neither Gandalf nor Treebeard..

Midge
06-08-2006, 04:32 PM
Oh, look at that, I made a big deal out of it and I was wrong anyway...
Now is when you can point and laugh at Midge!

Ok, so maybe an dwarf named Gimli?

Radagast The Brown
06-08-2006, 05:08 PM
Heh... :p Well second guess still counts, and you're right! :) your turn.

Midge
06-08-2006, 07:18 PM
See, I figured something like that might happen! Gosh...

"T_e_/w_n'_/g_t/_a_/./A_l/_h_t/_o_n_r_/i_/_l_v_/w_t_/o_r/_u_t_r_/n_w/./"

I made it short, but good luck anyway!!

Well, actually, Tolkien made it short. I just picked that one. ;)

Valandil
06-08-2006, 08:17 PM
"They won't get far. All that /_o_n_r_/ is alive with our /_u_t_r_/now."

Midge
06-09-2006, 01:06 PM
sorry guys, I got grounded. If one of you wants to be the hero, I can tell you where to look it up so you can find the answer. (Rotk, chapter8).. Sorry. Have a good week.

Midge
06-15-2006, 02:00 AM
Oh, look. I am back and no one has posted since I informed you I got grounded. Do you wanna pick up with the hanging quote? Or has this thread puttered out?

And btw, Val, you were all correct so far.

Valandil
06-15-2006, 07:07 AM
We will continue.

These are tough words for me though. The second one... "hunters"? ("suitors" also works, but seems less likely)

Midge
06-15-2006, 12:42 PM
"hunters" is right...
Man, it is short, but it is hard...

slurktan
06-15-2006, 06:36 PM
I'd guess it's:

They won't get far. All that country is alive with our hunters now.

Midge
06-15-2006, 07:53 PM
yep. that's the quote, anyway. who said it?

Count Comfect
06-15-2006, 08:29 PM
Ghan-buri-ghan?

Valandil
06-15-2006, 09:17 PM
If not Gbg - I'll guess "Pippin"

Midge
06-15-2006, 09:44 PM
It was Pip. Which means it is your turn, Val.

"Twelve yards! I should have thought it was thirty at least, but my eyes don't see as well as they used a hundred years ago. Still twelve yards is as good as a mile. We can't jump it, and we haven't _r_ to wade or swim."

"haven't" and "Balin" are incorrect - that leaves two words and the speaker.

Midge
06-17-2006, 12:38 AM
"Daren't try"
Wild stab at speaker: Ori

Valandil
06-17-2006, 07:03 AM
Words are correct Midge - speaker not Ori

Midge
06-17-2006, 07:59 PM
Thorin

Valandil
06-17-2006, 10:55 PM
Thorin it was - your turn Midge. :)

Midge
06-18-2006, 12:47 PM
Again?! How many times do I have to do this? (heehee)

"T_a_/G_n_a_f/_r_y_a_e/_a_/n_e_/o_/h_s_e/./_v_r/_e/_o_s/_n_/c_m_s/_n_o_k_d-_o_/./"

Gwaimir Windgem
06-19-2006, 08:52 PM
That Gandalf _r_y_a_e can need or h_s_e. Ever he _o_s and comes _n_o_k_d-_o_.

Midge
06-19-2006, 10:15 PM
All ok, except for "can" and "or"...

Rían
06-19-2006, 10:26 PM
"Grayhame" is the first word, I think, and "goes" the third.

Valandil
06-19-2006, 10:51 PM
"That Gandalf Grayhame may need of haste. Ever he goes and comes unlooked-for."

Midge
06-20-2006, 12:02 AM
All's well that ends well! Except for the "may"... That is wrong.

And "Grayhame" is spelled wrong. (easily fixed) Is that a true mistake?

Still need a speaker, if there are any takers.

Valandil
06-20-2006, 12:07 AM
Oh - "has" (makes more sense that way) - and maybe it's "Greyhame"? Honest mistake.

Is this Gandalf talking about himself? (EDIT: - oooo - I think it's not him, and I think I remember who - but I'll leave this guess for now. :) )

Midge
06-20-2006, 12:49 AM
Yes, the quote is complete, however-- Gandalf does not speak of himself in this quote...

Valandil
06-20-2006, 12:54 AM
Alright - I'll play...

Strider?

Midge
06-20-2006, 12:07 PM
Nope.
Try again.

Rían
06-20-2006, 05:37 PM
was it someone from Rohan?

Midge
06-20-2006, 05:51 PM
As a matter of fact, it was.

Rían
06-21-2006, 02:26 AM
one of those unnamed guards at the border? Or maybe he had a name but I can't remember it...

Butterbeer
06-21-2006, 05:21 AM
well this bloke ( whatsis' name) says somet like "wormtongue would put a spin on it were he here ...etc ... for myself i will look to his coming ...till we meet again ...

then this other bloke (whatsit 2) says somet like "maybe you wait long...."

...at this point, were this Star Trek you might just as well have put a red shirt on ( whatsis' name)

who, i think subsequently dies ..and if i am right falls before the gate of helms deep ...

is ( whatsis' name) .. (not to be confused with (whatsit 2) ) ... in fact Hama, captain of the doorwards of Theoden?

Midge
06-21-2006, 10:46 AM
You kinda had me confused with the conversation (it's the right one, but you had some lines mixed).
But, yes, Whatsis' name is Hama. Oh, well... You picked the right one, kid and that's all that matters, really.

My perfectionist self must fix the mistake. You don't have to read the following.
W:Wormtongue would know what it means.
W2: I'll wait for Gandy.
W: Maybe you will wait long.

In which case W2 would be Hama.

Butterbeer
06-21-2006, 05:59 PM
Kid? :p :D

in all the bars, in all the quote games, in all of middle earth, you had to waltz into dis gig, huh?

play it again Midge! (but i think your perfectionist quotes are not in fact at all perfect! ;) )

er... so .. i am up then? :D
best, BB :)

Midge
06-21-2006, 07:19 PM
Well, I was paraphrasing...

And yep... that's what it means.

*yeah... "kid".

Butterbeer
06-22-2006, 07:14 AM
BB "the Kid" rides on in, opens da saloon bar swing doors, orders a whisky, calls for a tune on da piano and leaves this cryptic clue scratched onto the bar top ...

"-n- / -o-s / -o- / -i-p-y / -a-k / -n-o / -o-d-r / . / -t- /-l-c- /-a-e- / -r- /-u-r-e- / b- / -o-e /-h-n /-u-t /-r-s /.

yeeeeehaw!

*clouds of dust spiral into the air like dancing snakes, as BB rides off into the sunset*

EDIT*** EDITED THIS DAY FRIDAY THE 23RD JUNE AD - i think the dashes are right now! :)

Valandil
06-22-2006, 07:43 AM
Sorry BB - please try again. You're supposed to leave out every second letter - not letters here and there as you like.

Please read the game rules in the opening post and work up another quote. :)

Butterbeer
06-22-2006, 10:28 AM

Still not quite... We were referring to your
"-n- / -o-s / -o- / -i---y / -al- / -n-o / -o---r..."
where there are words with three letters in a row missing. (i.e.: "-i---y")

As Val said, read the first post of this thread to get the rules...

Props for the every-other-lettering your entire message. Made me laugh.

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 04:54 AM
trouble is i forgot to save the quote!

i have to go search for wherever i got it from ... :p

ok, quote fans, i think this is now correct. Sorry about the haphazardry ...i did it very quickly because i was at work!

best, BB

Valandil
06-23-2006, 06:21 AM
Still not quite right BB. We remove every other letter from the entire quote, not from each word, so that if you've removed the last letter from one word, you leave the first letter of the word that follows. For instance, if I wanted to apply that to this statement:

"This is the way we play the Quote Game."

I start by typing it like so...

"This/is/the/way/we/play/the/Quote/Game."

... and then go back and remove letters like this...

"T_i_/i_/t_e/_a_/w_/p_a_/t_e/_u_t_/G_m_."

not like this...

"_h_s/_s/_h_/_a_/_e/_l_y/_h_/_u_t_/_a_e."

Would you like to try again? You'll probably need a different quote, or the letters already given the previous way will help too much in solving it.

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 06:41 AM
"w-l-/,/ w-a-'r-/ w-/ w-i-i-g/ -o-?"

alright try this little number!

Valandil
06-23-2006, 06:55 AM
"Well, what're we waiting for?" and "Best, BB" - easy enough, but not Tolkien.

I take it then, that you're bailing, is that right, Dusty? :p

Who would like to post next?

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 07:09 AM
it is indeed Tolkien - and you need the speaker!

(if you go to the first post Val - you will see the rules! :p ;) )

best, BB :)

Valandil
06-23-2006, 07:12 AM
OK - was it Pippin?

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 07:15 AM

nope. :)

...Dusty??? ??

Valandil
06-23-2006, 07:46 AM
I was referring to this:

yeeeeehaw!

*clouds of dust spiral into the air like dancing snakes, as BB rides off into the sunset*

;)

Speaker guess: Merry?

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 08:02 AM
no indeed! :D

Valandil
06-23-2006, 08:08 AM
Bilbo?

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 08:42 AM
Nay...

Valandil
06-23-2006, 09:02 AM
Frodo?

Butterbeer
06-23-2006, 12:57 PM
sees a pattern emerging ... :D

no go i'm affraid ...

Midge
06-23-2006, 01:12 PM
hmm... I will say gandy.

NO, i won't.

I will say gimli.

*You know, it is pretty strange that my calling you kid could inspire you to write your quote from a cowpoke's point of view.* :D

Valandil
06-23-2006, 06:54 PM
I WILL say Gandalf. :p

Midge
06-23-2006, 07:41 PM
Copycat...

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 05:58 AM
midge ...you are allowed only one guess per post ... Val and I are sticklers for rules you know! :p :D :)

since Val is saying gandalf, and you are saying "copycat" i am hereby assuming you are picking Gandalf.

one go per go!

therefore:

*drum roll*

Both wrong!! :D

Valandil
06-24-2006, 07:54 AM
Not exactly a lot of "meat" in the quote. Any hints for the speaker? Race? Story? Episode?

I'll guess William (the Troll).

(SGH - should we add a rule that quotes need to be a min of 10 words? Or maybe 8?)

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 08:09 AM
the answers right there before you .. literally!

(no william's too tall)

Valandil
06-24-2006, 08:13 AM
Gimli?

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 08:21 AM
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

taken from a search - i found it here:
http://students.washington.edu/mmccain/lotrquotes.html

"Certainty of death, small chance of success... well, what're we waiting for? ";

- Gimli to the Captains of the West

well, to be fair- i had to cut it down because of severe time constraints - you really could have let the second 'almost perfect' one go through Val !!!! :p  :)

ah well, Val won!!

well done!

.../and no way was that a guess neither ... i think he knew it from the start !! :D

hah! all the best, BB :)

*phew i'm glad that's over the responsibility was eating away at me!*

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 08:24 AM
oddly, (you could say ironically ...) i wasn't sure what the hell to do with the " ..." so i cut it down rather redo it a THIRD time! :D

././. or ./-/. or just ... ?

...

Valandil
06-24-2006, 08:25 AM
Well - that's still not how we do it then. For one - you didn't post the entire quote. For another - that was from a movie, not one of the BOOKS specified for the game.

(EDIT: SGH - we should clarify those two items in the rules)

Post coming soon.

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 08:30 AM
the quote is what we specifiy - otherwise you have to write the whole book.
That is a superfluous argument really Val.

Are you sure??? - i recall him saying something like that in the debate. (in the book)

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 09:05 AM
hmmmmmm ..just checked that site and yes they do also include movie quotes , the bleepers...

i also skimmed the last debate (book V, chapter IX just now ... and i can't see it...)

so, my apologies.

however on the plus side, what i actually put down as a quote Gimli almost certainly says somewhere! ..probably more than once ... IN THE BOOKS

*phew*

Midge
06-24-2006, 12:23 PM
A-hem...
Oh... NO, that was unfair.
I did not pick Gandalf.. I chose Gimli. I was merely pointing out that Val chose something that I thought about picking. And if I had chosen Gandy, I am sure that Val wouldn't have. But whatever... I've done quite a few quotes over the past week or so... So go ahead.

Valandil
06-24-2006, 01:57 PM
Midge, agree with you - you should go. :)

Midge
06-24-2006, 02:07 PM
Ok, are you sure?

Valandil
06-24-2006, 02:19 PM
Certainly - I took "Gimli" as your answer first anyway. :)

Midge
06-24-2006, 02:20 PM
"I/_n_w/_h_t/_o_c_/a_d/_/c_r_e/_h_/d_y/_h_n/_/f_r_t/_i_t_n_d/_o/_t/./"

Enjoy...

Valandil
06-24-2006, 02:30 PM
"I know that voice and I curse the day when I first listened to it."

Theoden?

Midge
06-24-2006, 02:37 PM
Wow.. that was fast.

Yeah... that just happens to be it.

And no, I did not make it that easy so you could have your turn quicker. I just opened to one random page in the book and found a quote. And that was what I found.

So now it is your turn. Have at it.

Butterbeer
06-24-2006, 05:18 PM
shouldn't that be my decision, Val?

Midge said either gandalf or gimli, you said Gandalf, midge said copycat ... therefore picking gandalf ..

the important point here is : we played on ..
and you won ...

how thus can Midge take the next go?

It was my quote and you, Val won, not midge?

Please explain this.

you make a massive point of my dashes and dots all being perfect to the nth degree ...and then flout the rules???

as poster i decide who got it right - and you did!

Valandil
06-24-2006, 06:57 PM
It isn't the poster that you "decide" is right. It's the one who supplies the last missing bit of information, whether word or speaker.

I thought it was clear that Midge was really answering "Gimli" - he just ribbed me for picking "Gandalf" when he had toyed with the idea of trying that.

We kept on playing because none of us at the time (except you) knew that it was indeed Gimli. Not until after you announced that I had won by saying "Gimli" - when Midge had already said it.

Can we drop it?

Next quote:

"C_l_/m_/b_/n_/s_c_/n_m_/!
/I/_m/_o/_a_g_t_r/_f/_i_e_/:
/r_t_e_/i_/s_e/_y/_o_."

Midge
06-24-2006, 07:39 PM
Umm... one mistake there, Val... I am no he... Nothing big, it is just kinda weird to be referred to as a member of the opposite sex!

Quote time!
"Call me by no such name!
I am/no/laughter/of/_i_e_/:
/rather/it/see/by/you."

Valandil
06-24-2006, 10:22 PM
Oops! :o Sorry Midge - I didn't know.

"laughter" is not correct - and your last four words are also wrong.

Midge
06-24-2006, 10:25 PM
It's all good.

Midge
06-24-2006, 10:27 PM
Is the last word in the second line "fires"? Maybe...

And is it "if she"...

or maybe it is "rather is she my /_o_/"

Valandil
06-24-2006, 10:29 PM
No - not "fires"

Midge
06-24-2006, 10:32 PM
Lives? And have you checked my other guesses? (see above post)...

Midge
06-24-2006, 10:42 PM
"Call/me/by/no/such/name/!
/I/am/no/_a_g_t_r/of/_i_e_/: rather is she my/_o_."

Man, that one word is dificil!

Valandil
06-24-2006, 10:48 PM
'dificil' is not correct :D ;) - but all the other words you tried are. :)

Midge
06-24-2006, 10:54 PM
Is the last word "mom"?

Hehe.. it fits...

Valandil
06-24-2006, 10:55 PM
Not "mom" - but you'll think that's funny when the quote is complete. :)

Count Comfect
06-25-2006, 03:37 AM
"son"? daughter of [something], also

Earniel
06-25-2006, 05:53 AM
Last word is likely to be 'foe'.

EDIT: Oh wait! I got it:

"Call me by no such name ! I am no daughter of Uinen: rather is she my foe."

Erendis is the speaker

Valandil
06-25-2006, 07:12 AM
Correct Earniel - your turn. :)

Valandil

"Which King? As like as not it is the marauding fire of the Dragon, the only king under the Mountain we have ever known."

A man of Lake Town? (don't recall for sure if it's a named one or not)

Earniel
06-25-2006, 06:17 PM
The Quote is correct, Val.

The speaker does have a name, although you have to read on a little further to see who.

Valandil
06-25-2006, 07:36 PM
Bard then? (I didn't remember if he said that or one of the men he was with)

Earniel
06-26-2006, 04:49 AM
Indeed. Your turn. :)

Gwaimir Windgem
06-26-2006, 07:49 PM
Missing word: Yourselves.

Also, I think it's "Your own Shire", not "your own there".

Valandil
06-26-2006, 09:39 PM
Gwaimir's corrections make the quote complete.

Speaker?

Midge
06-26-2006, 11:58 PM
umm.. wood elf.
i can't remember his name.
gildor inglorion

Valandil
06-27-2006, 06:51 AM
Oh yes you can... Gildor it was!

Your turn Midge. :)

Midge
06-27-2006, 04:13 PM

Or did you not know?"

Midge
06-27-2006, 04:20 PM
Yeah... I checked the quote again after I posted and figured out there is no "or". My mistake. If i had left it in there, it would be right.

Yep. all right so far.
Just need the one word and a speaker.

Butterbeer
06-27-2006, 04:51 PM
bore

Prince Imrahil?

BB swears (if right) he will manage at least one quote without any hiccups ...

best, BB :)

Midge
06-27-2006, 05:41 PM
Yes... "bore" and Imrahil complete the quote.

It is your turn, BB.

Gwaimir Windgem
06-27-2006, 09:42 PM
umm.. wood elf.
i can't remember his name.
gildor inglorion

You may have got the name right, but he is NOT a wood elf. Just because they HAPPENED to meet him in a wood... :p

Midge
06-27-2006, 11:00 PM
Oh, yeah. I know... I was just thinking an elf in a wood... it just helped me to remember his name. I can stop typing my thinking process if y'all would like (no... I don't TALK like that, using the word "y'all" and stuff).

Butterbeer
06-28-2006, 04:35 AM
I'm the same Midge ..i tend to type a stream of thoughts ...

btw is the name Midge from the classic children's cartoon Mary, Mungo and Midge? (was one of my favs that! :) )

.................................................. ..............................

"H-l-/ n-w/ -o/ -e-a-r/ -h-/ e-i-/ i-/ w-i-h/ -o-/ h-v- / j-i-e-/ "

easy.

Good luck all, BB :)

Valandil
06-28-2006, 06:42 AM
"Help"?

Gandalf?

Butterbeer
06-28-2006, 03:25 PM
"help" is indeed correct. :)

but not gandalf, no.

Midge
06-28-2006, 04:06 PM
erkenbrand

Midge
06-28-2006, 04:07 PM
no, not from any book. my friends just called me that cuz i am a little short (nothing like as short as a "legal midget", but short enough to be quite unusual).

Butterbeer
06-28-2006, 04:08 PM
Correct! :) :) :D :)

..and history is made! I did one without any cock-ups!!

well done Midge.

Over to you ..

"Thrice as far as the dwellings of King Theoden,

OK - is THIS one Gandalf? :p

I remember the other one now - I was thinking Gandalf said it to Saruman - but that was Erkenbrand talking to the Dunlendings, right?

Midge
06-28-2006, 10:33 PM
Yep. Gandalf said it. And the quote is right, too. I guess that is kinda important.

Valandil
06-30-2006, 07:29 AM
Argh - my Tolkien is all mixing together on me. The quote is vaguely familiar, but I forget just where it's from, so I'll have to guess:

S... a... m. I feel bad, cuz I have been doing so many lately that if someone else wants to go, they can. If not, I will post tomorrow.

Butterbeer
07-05-2006, 05:59 PM
pleonastic huh?

you are ruling out a hobbit?

Midge
07-05-2006, 09:35 PM
yes to the first question. no to the other questions.

Midge
07-07-2006, 12:04 AM
Just so you know guys, I am gonna be leaving tomorrow for a week. You'd best start guessing, or else you might be stuck wondering who said that quote for A WHOLE ENTIRE WEEK!!! and don't say i didn't warn you... cuz that's what this is. a warning.

Midge
07-07-2006, 12:14 PM
All right, I am giving you a hint, cuz I really am going away tonight.

Somewhere in LOTHLORIEN, the speaker of this quote spoke this quote.

Seriously, guys. Tonight at probably five-thirty, I will be GONE!!!! So you should start guessing.

Midge
07-07-2006, 02:51 PM
Time is ticking until I leave... Like three hours left....

Come on, you know it...

Midge
07-07-2006, 05:46 PM

Midge
07-07-2006, 06:13 PM

jammi567
07-07-2006, 06:14 PM

jammi567
07-16-2006, 06:10 PM

Valandil
07-16-2006, 07:26 PM
Not a lot of "meat" on this one either - for guessing a speaker.

Let me see...

Gandalf?

Midge
07-16-2006, 11:28 PM
Yeah, I honestly have no idea, so this will be another stab in the dark...

Umm...Aragorn?

um - *flips coin* ...

Frodo?

jammi567
07-18-2006, 06:05 PM
Butterber, no. Midge..........yes!

Midge
07-19-2006, 01:34 AM
OH, yay me!!!

Ummm... just out of curiousity, when did Merry say that?

And now the quote:

Ummm... just out of curiousity, when did Merry say that?
Just after Treebeard has sung the song that the Ents and Entwifes used to sing together in olden times, in the chapter 'Treebeard'.

c'mon, guys... This is how it works: fill in the missing letters and I tell you whether you were right or not. You're not doing your job...

"You should fear the /m_n_/ ever of the servants of Sauron.
I do not doubt that news of the discomfiture(?) of the Riders
has already reached him, and he will be filled with wrath."

Elrond?

"You should fear the /m_n_/e_e_ of the servants of Sauron.
I do not doubt that news of the discomfiture(?) of the Riders
has already reached him, and he will be filled with wrath."

That's all you got right. And yes, Elrond spoke those words.

(I figured "discomfiture" would give you more trouble than that...)

Yes. Well, you jumped in before you had a chance to guess just the speaker... So it is your go, Butterbeer! Have fun!

i shall try ... ;) ..but no doubt i shall be acused of having other motives or some sort of arrogance for merely posting a new idea or get something "new" started ... ...

Poor BB... :) Never mind, if you start anything new, give me a call... let Tharbad sleep in peace, no point awakening the ghosts of a dead past. How about Jas and Bumbledore go on a fun journey through Middle-earth? Maybe to look at prospective vine-yards? We can make that stick... :) Middle-earth belongs to us all, and let the University and all those inns and rivers remain buried. Surely no one can point fingers then?

sorry guys, i just won't have time to do a quote just now, could you please give it, Midge to whoever was next closest or whoever you want?

(maybe give Serenoli a go ? - your call anyway - heh nice to see you Serenoli :) :) )

cheers, BB

(edit -OT - yes serenoli, that was the kinda line i was thinking along (as far as i got with it ..which was to run up a flag and get some feedback ... ....trouble is Constable BB and Bumbledore is cleary defined in tharbad at that time ... :o ... it is yet to be seen whtther the majority may wish to reprise their charcters into a peacetime rpg ... i understand Sane and Maggie still write their charcters elswehere ... maybe this would be an option for those like ourselves and possiblly TD, even Earniel that may wish to carry on their characters without wraiths and in peace... i highly doubt (at a guess) Val wants to continue his characters ... *shrugs* though i have no qualms about his mod actions at all, in fact hurrah!, say I ... actually Val can you just DELETE totally that little disc thrad / & the split thingy? )

(EDIT 2 - VERY SORRY TO PUT THIS All HERE- have little time and thought i had better post i have no time to do a quote or answer it)

best BB

Nice to see you, BB. Me, I would love to write my characters again, but not if there are more quarrels again, sucks all the fun out, don't you think? anyway, if you ever do manage to rig it up, give me a call, won't you?

Midge, sorry for all this. I know BB suggests me, but I haven't done anything relevant for the quote-game. Looks like Val guessed the last bit before BB, I think it should be his turn.

Sorry for my tardiness. I am only having an hourlong reprieve from a weeklong gounding from the computer that lasts until sunday. so I guess Val should go.

Or, if Val is taking too long, Serenoli can go. Whichever of you gets there first... Your choice.

Maybe "moister" is "monster"... Or not. you never know.

And "shades" could be "shamer". I guess.

Valandil

Wrong Words:

count, moister (monster is correct), shades (shamer also wrong), gold, weld, gets, - and last four words.

Okay, guesses... is it "things that we held"? Is it "arm is long"?

and... just thought of this... "the witch-king goes home"?

Midge
07-31-2006, 02:00 AM
umm... "his cold arm is long"? and "bring us food and other things we need"?

Those are correct.

That leaves three words and speaker.

Could we get a repost of what that means the quote is so far?

slaves?

Valandil

Sure - the quote as it stands:

"Do not /_o_n_/ on this sea-monster!
If they have them,
let the /s_a_e_/ bring us food and other things that we need,
and you can stay here till the witch-king goes home.
For in summer his power wanes;
but now his breath is /_e_d_y/, and his cold arm is long."
