There's a Harry Potter trivia thread... that was basically stuck the last 5 months. I suppose we can continue that instead of openning a new one: http://www.entmoot.com/showthread.php?t=7772&page=1&pp=20

All what you say is true, but why does it matter?

P.S. Sorry, Spock, I was a bit too eager, wasn't I? :o

The Wizard from Milan
05-31-2005, 10:11 AM
Ok, I don't want to hold up the game too long. The reason why it matters we learn at the very end of the book: from the conversation about the socks fake-Moody learns that Harry and Dobby are friends; he uses this information to let Dobby overhear about gillyweeds for the second task.

Radagast, ask the next one. :)

I don't know :p
I seem to remember that the true Moody was in the last (the seventh); I always wondered whether it served any purpuse to see the content of the other locks or whether it is just a bit of color that JKR added (I think it is very nice, mind you).

Oh, yes, yes, yes you are right; it has planets on it, if I remember well; he uses it in chapter 1 in Privet Drive while he is waiting for Hagrid. I think the book says "it must have made sense to him because..."
I am not sure I remember "because what" but I think it says "because he said `Hagrid should be here soon'"

EDITED AFTER THE QUESTION HAS BEEN ADJUDICATED: Dumbledore's watch is mentioned also in OotP after the fight between Voldemort and Dumbledore, when Dumbledore says to Fudge how much time he's got

Spock
06-07-2005, 09:55 AM

Oh this is soooooooooo putting me in the mood of cheating and looking it up

Spock
06-08-2005, 08:25 AM
As we decided in FOTR, ages ago, after so many questions are asked you just have to go to the source. In the case of HP there are more books involved and so after racking ones memory, it's not cheating if you need look it up. Remember what they teach in college; if you look something up you remember it longer.

Spock
06-08-2005, 05:35 PM
It has planets in place the numbers and 12 hands instead of two.

So the Wizard of Milan came closest with half the answer and can post the next question. :p

Malfoy? He seems the kind of person to say that.

The Wizard from Milan
06-16-2005, 08:50 AM
I am not saying that the statement (Harry has a boyfriend) is true. I am saying that the character suggests it is true.
No it is not Malfoy, althogh tolkienfan, you got very close in the spirit with which this statement was made

The Wizard from Milan
06-17-2005, 08:53 AM
Ok, let me just answer this one for you, so we can go on.
It is Dudley who taunts Harry about him and Cedric being boyfriends (when Dudley hears Harry talking of Cedric in the night)

tolkienfan you go

durinsbane2244
06-17-2005, 07:38 PM
ooooooooooooooooo, dudley, riiiight. . . . .

what DOES purport mean?

The Wizard from Milan
06-17-2005, 11:55 PM
to purport
1. trans. To have as its purport, bearing, or tenor; to convey to the mind; to bear as its meaning; to express, set forth, state; to mean, imply.
b. Followed by inf. (of a picture, statue, document, book, or the like; rarely of a person): To profess or claim by its tenor. (Said without pronouncing as to the truth or validity of the claim.)
2. To mean, intend, purpose. rare.
I was using meaning 1b (to state without implying that the statement is true or false), although I see that as meaning 1b I should have used an infinitive after it :o

1. one from the MoM saying that he would be expelled and his wand would be destroyed
2. one from Arthur Weasley telling him Dumbledore was taking care of it and not to make more magic
3. one again from the MoM saying that the whole thing was suspended until the hearing

Fine, fine... :p I know there are problems with the question, but I put 'illegal' only to make it clearer, and I thought it's obvious I'm not talking about every letter he got after the spell as we don't have that information anyway; and I was wrong myself counting the letter for Petunia. In reponse to the money question: Knuts are bronze. Sickles are silver. Galleons are gold.

As far as the hat tipping question goes Diggle bowed to Harry a couple of times. Doris Crockford kept coming back to shake Harry's hand but I remember no hat tipping. Please pm and tell me where to look in the book because it's bugging me now.

Well, we know that they all pop; there is a theory that says that the louder you pop the more inexperienced or the less powerful you are. DD and Voldy hardly make any pop at all.
