View Full Version : Candidate Open House
Nurvingiel
02-28-2004, 07:44 PM
Here is an open house where all candidates (presidential and non-presidential alike) can make speeches, answer questions, and chat with their supporters. All Mooters are welcome to post and ask questions! It's an informal, friendly setting, with tea and scones provided by the Teacup Cafe. (Random plug :D)
Take a seat, help yourself to refreshments, and feel free to ask questions!
(By the way, sorry about the presidential debate thread thing, I'm moving all my posts here.)

[originally in the other thread]
Actually, I hope all Mooters post here, everyone should be allowed to ask questions of the candidates IMO.
Speaking of which, Hectorberlioz, Falagar, and I have restructured our campaign. Falagar and I have withdrawn, and fully support Hectorberlioz for President.
Our full team includes:
Hectorberlioz - President
Nurvingiel - Vice President
Falagar - Minister of Internal Affairs
Twista - Minister of Foreign Affairs
Artanis - Minister of Culture
If Hector is elected President, the other people listed will be appointed to those positions. Our platform will be complete shortly, and our signatures will be updated appropriately.
Though I'm running on Hector's slate (is that the right term?), I'll still answer your questions.
How do you feel that Tolkien's ‘Lord of the Rings’ has effected your life?
I love "Lord of the Rings" and it has affected my life positively and subtly, in different ways:
- provinding a source of excellent quotes and anecdotes for almost any situation
- causing me to be known as a geek for the fairly frequent use of the aforementioned quotes and anecdotes
- causing me to be glad I'm known as a Tolkien geek, and identify myself as a Tolkienite
- providing me access to a wonderful on-line community devoted to Tolkien's works (that's Entmoot! )
If you could meet Mr. Tolkien in real life, what would you say and do?
(Ahem, that's Professor ;) Er, not to be anal.) I would say that I'm honoured to meet him, and I love his works. I'd also ask him to autograph one of my books (The Silmarillion maybe, I can't decide). If I could overcome my awe, I would ask him what Middle-earth means to him.
How many of Tolkien’s books have you read? Please give the titles.
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
The Silmarillion
Farmer Giles of Ham and the Adventures of Tom Bombadil (these two works were published as one book, as well as being 2 of 4 stories in "Tales from the Perilous Realm".)
(Plans to read: The other two stories in "Tales of the Perilous Realm", which I now have, and "Roverandom". Stupid real life.)
If some one were crossing the street with a book titled 'Bored of the Rings', what would be your reaction? Would you:
H: other
I would smile, and rejoice at my terrific eye sight. I can read book titles from 15 meters away!
EDIT 2: Actually, I think I misread your question. My reaction would be, "What is 'Bored of the Rings'? That sounds like a Tolkien parody, but why is he bored? Tolkien isn't boring at all, I love reading Tolkien. Sould I read "Roverandom" now, or finish "Dune" first? Or maybe start "Leaf by Niggle"... and continue on this book train of thought.
Lets say you've just gotten home from work, and it's been a hard day. Your boss threw up all over your report, your dog was lying dead across the little 'welcome' rug when you got home, and your radio is broken and is playing rap music non-stop. The only release from your torture is the little 'Sting' replica hanging on your wall. What would you do?
I would go out to my backyard with my Sting replica and pretend I was Bilbo fighting the giant spiders in Mirkwood. Blissful escape into Tolkien's wonderful world is the perfect way to relax for a while!
EDIT 3: That would be after I bury my dog. Oops.
How do you feel about the new editions of Lord of the Rings coming out with sad little pictures from the movies plastered all over the cover?
Book covers aren't terribly important - my copy of "The Return of the King" is very battered, and my parents gave me the black-covered edition of "The Silmarillion" for Christmas. (The black-cover single circle type.) Though I feel that the artwork on the original books is nicer, the most important thing is the words themselves.
EDIT: I forgot to answer the first three questions, and then I accidentally hit "Reset Message". Aaaargh!

ah HA! so this is what you were talking about! :o ;) :D
those are pretty good answers, nurv!
tell, me: what is it about LotR that first drew you in? (i don't know if we're allowed to ask questions, but i thought maybe we were supposed to or something...yeah...)

All wrong Lady! All wrong!
You didn't cross your legs and smile politely when you said that. You must ALWAYS cross your legs and smile pilotely when asking questions like that! :D
Nurvingiel

Lol Tessar :D
What first drew me in about LotR is that my dad read it to my brother and I when we were about 10 and 11. He's great at reading aloud (he did all the voices well, especially Shagrat and Gorbag), and LotR is such a magical story. He'd read about a chapter a night, and we were just enthralled. I read it myself later, and was hooked ever since.

Hello there. I'd just like to indroduce myself then. If you didnt see above i am acually running for 'Foreign Affairs Minister' in this campaign, and hence forth will deal with all outside issues if we are elected. The first thing i would like to annouce is what you may call our party. ( That Being Hector, Falagar, Nurv, Myself and Artanis ). Anyway, from now on we will be known as:
"The Council of Entmoot"
We thought it was quite fitting lol. Ill be releasing my various ideas for my party in the Election process, and what ill do for you all if we get elected.
Thanks!

HOW?!

That's a good question.
How do you justify that?
Nurvingiel
02-29-2004, 10:39 PM
:D Are you referring to Twista or me? I don't think the occasional misspelled word, or misuse of the shift key is a crime against nature.
Twista, of course, would be an excellent Foreign Affairs Minister due to his friendly and outgoing nature, and his strong desire to make Entmoot known to potential Mooters not yet joined.
BeardofPants
03-01-2004, 12:42 AM
I am refering to the Minister of Foreign affairs which would be Twista, and I suspect that Tolkien would beg to differ. Is this the sort of candidate you want to be representing a respected author and philologist?
Nurvingiel
03-01-2004, 02:29 AM
Oh dear, I don't even know what a philologist is! :o :D
Well yes! Tolkien is a genius, not anal retentive. :D The important thing is the spirit and intent of his words. If spelling is the only criticism of him, then obviously he's the ideal candidate! :D

Update on debate results:
All newspapers open the week with the results of a large audience poll that reflects how the mooters are seeing this interesting  debate.
"The lazyness of the candidates puts out the mooters" is the large front title of The Entmoot Guardian.
The Derndingle Tribune chooses a more aggressive view of the situation: "Tessar's incisive questioning knocks out two"
The Daily Mirrormere, shares this view, but it's more explicit: "Fal and Nurv beaten and scattered"
"Chickens" is The Arien's take on the withdrawal of the two candidates and on the lazyness of the rest.
But it's The Daily Elen which perhaps has summarized best the audience's opinion: "Tessar for President"

The obvious answer on THIS board and for THIS campaign, is a boxed set of as many JRRT books as possible! :D
But... hoping to actually survive the experience, I've heard that the TWO things most necessary to survival (from which you could make anything else) are a knife and rope. I'd go with the knife, because you could also make the rope.

Awesome FM! :D
Given the recent story about Falagar and I in the Entmoot Guardian, I feel I should clarify why we withdrew. He and I (as you can see from our sig) are part of the same party as Hectorberlioz. We still plan to form the government, but Falagar and I didn't want to split the vote for our party. IOW, we don't want to "do a Ralph Nader". :D
We are not chickens, and further, our party is the only one that has been active at all in campaigning so far. However, this doesn't necessarily reflect badly on other candidates. It's very possible that people have a lot of RL stuff to deal with right now, that's fair.

By the way Twista, it doesn't appear that you have a spelling problem, it looks to me like you just can't be bothered using capitals, commas, and apostrophes. Again, something that is not particularly representative of Tolkien. I also don't think he'd use acronyms, but that's just me.

Well... as all can now see :o
I wear black boxer briefs with the emblem of the crown over the seven stars above the White Tree! :D
But I don't think my campaign is about whether I represent JRR Tolkien best. For one, that would be a pretentious claim. It may also be a contentious one hereabouts. I don't intend to change my avatar or sig or title to please anyone. Each of us is as we are... and it's more important that we just have this place to meet one another and share our love for (and joy in) Professor Tolkien's work - than that we try to out-do one another proclaiming how much we adore him. He himself might even find the latter objectionable.
From Tessar's lists, my favorite question is what I would say to JRR Tolkien if I could meet him. My answer: 'Thanks!'
My second-favorite is about seeing someone with 'Bored of the Rings': It's fun to think I'd shout, "Hey loser, hope Sorehead doesn't catch Frito and Spam!! Now go back to Harvard!" Instead, I'd probably just think to myself, 'Different strokes fer different folks' (and that's SURE different! :D ) :p
Oh pants... I definitely BELIEVE in pants! I wear them every single day!! ;)

Well I agree with that. Each Mooter is (1) a fan of Tolkien and (2) representing Tolkien by posting at this board. No one is claiming to be the sole representative here. ;)
I think breeches would be the pants best representing Tolkien. I believe he described himself as being a Hobbit in all but height. (That's a paraphrase.)

Gun registry, well, the program we have in Canada is sadly not working very well. I think it's an excellent idea in theory, but it doesn't appear to work well in practice. However, maybe another country has a better system of implementing this idea.

With respect to gun control, some crooks have guns, but most people have properly stored shotguns or pistols. You're not allowed to buy automatic weapons or any military weapons, and this is enforced well as far as I know. Erm... what does this have to do with Entmoot?

Ents don't like guns.
You needs Ents for an Entmoot.
Therefore Ents and Entmoots are directly related as guns are to Ents which are to Entmoots which are to guns as guns are to the Ents of the Entmoots of the Entmoot that we are talking about right NOW!

HOBBIT ANNOUNCEMENT
Ignore my intial endorsement in the topic that is closed.
That was when I was under the dellusion that admins stood together and that SGH was qualified.
She most definitely is not.
The title of president is mine and I want someone who will wear it well, at this time I do not believe that to be SGH.
At this time I would support , Hector, Falagar and his crew. Kinda like how I was 4 years ago.

You think your opinion matters? I'm sure because the great and powerful hobbit endorses someone everyone will just flock to them. :p
Nurv, Falagar, Hector - I would refuse his endorsement if you know what is good for you. :p

What's going on? Sarcasm? More attempts to make Entmoot "goofy fun"? Man, this election has more "bull" than the real one! I think we should raise the stakes. Let's give "The President" some kind of actual power.....Besides greeting newbies...Hmmm..

No, I am serious.
JD, shut up. I have had enough of your bull.
Try being nice, eh?
I would hope that my opinion matters to mooters, being a member since 1999 and an admin for so long. I am no longer respected? My opinion no longer matters? So says you.
I for one don't care about your opinion. You have crossed the line to many times and I am fed up with you.
Hector, Falagar, Nurv most closely resemble how I was 4 years ago and they seem to be having about as much fun as I used to have. I'd vote for them.

SGH - believe it or not but I was popular.
Ben was a main person who did not support me - he wanted gil to win.
The other mods and admins and a majority of members supported me.
He specifically didn't want me to be mod BECAUSE I was his bro.
I earned it.
See my post in the mod forum plz SGH.
Goodbye, for now.

Thank you for your kind support Hobbit. :) The Council of Entmoot values and respects everyone's contributions. We do have a lot of fun! I hope you still have fun though. :)
Thanks for posting here JD, I'm glad you came (tired of all my PMs filling up your inbox eh? Just kidding. :D).
For some mysterious reason, this thread seems to not be happy anymore. I'm not taking your advice Lizra, since I'm babbling on here, but I think the particular direction this thread is going should be redirected at something else, like food.
Refreshments anyone? The purpose of this thread is a jolly discussion of fun (which, IMO, is what the election is about - fun!)
Since I started the thread, I feel that I should moderate a bit.
Important: I kindly ask everyone at the Open House to make sure that
(1) Comments do not, either intentionally or unintentionally, make anyone feel 'picked on' or unfairly criticized.
(2) If you do feel 'picked on' or unfairly criticized, please do not respond angrily. This only makes the situation worse, and most likely the comment was not intended in a mean way. Please try to resolve it over PM.
Thanks guys. :)

Also, for us little voter people:
Why do you want to vote for the person you're currently supporting?

Nurv, if you were still running as an independent, I probably would have voted for you. But now, I'm not sure I have confidence in some members of your party, and so I'm facing a dilemma. I'd really need to see some more campaigning by Hector to assess him as a presidential candidate. Where is he, btw? I have actually noticed recent improvements in Twista's typing, it seems he's taking your advice to heart and really working on it.
Falagar is also doing an excellent job campaigning; the three of us are "holding down the fort" until Hector's return. Though Artanis isn't campaigning directly, I think her thoughtful, intelligent posts and massive knowledge speak for themselves.

I asked this question in the 'debate' thread, but I'm going to ask it here too. Why are people voting in the poll when all of the candidates have not addressed the questions? This doesn't make sense and shows to me, that the voters are voting out of favoritism of a candidate and not on the candidates views of campaign issues

See that's another reason why that debate thread is annoying. Not only do non-candidates keep posting in it, but people are voting and no one but FF has participated yet! PLUS the fact that the poll isn't even accurate, because some of those people are no longer presidential candidates!
I think people don't understand -- the poll in the debate thread is to vote for who you think is winning the debate, NOT who you want to win (I mean, be president). The actual voting for president isn't for a couple of weeks!

But that's not the voting for president, it's voting for the debate! I don't think the participants should be voting on that myself, but of course they could vote for president. But it isn't that big a deal anyway, because there is no debate. No matter how many votes they get in that poll, it will have no bearing on the actual election.

I guess they are either:
1. Confused, as I detailed above, or
2. Just voting based on who they want to win OR
3. Voting for themselves, which isn't really fair in a debate, since they can't objectivly judge whether or not they're winning.
I think your idea of closing it till the debate is over makes sense.

But wouldn't this unfairly weight the election towards the larger parties who have more members, and are therefore guaranteed a larger chunk of the vote as compared to the smaller parties who only have one or two members?

How so? In a US election if you are a registered voter, then you can vote. In the US, we pay more attention to the candidates themselves than the parties, and the candidates have the right to vote like every other citizen. Why would it change the balance just because they voted and are a candidate. They would still vote, candidate or not, and as a candidate, and a voter, they may vote for themselves.
BeardofPants
03-03-2004, 08:45 PM
Yes, I know that. It's how the NZ elections operate as well. And I'm not talking about the presidential candidate in particular - I'm talking about the party numbers. Say one party has 5, and one party has 2, that means the bigger party has an advantage over the smaller party. It's weighted towards the bigger one, because they will get 5 votes automatically as compared to the smaller party which will only get two votes automatically. See what I mean? The only way to balance this would be to make it mandatory that every party has an equal amount of members, or with-holding the vote from party members. Of course, if you don't care about making the vote more fair because you have a large party anyway, I can see how you might be inclined to just ignore the problem. ::shrug:: In any case, as it stands at the moment, it would be in all the parties' best interests to recruit as many members as possible to secure the a bigger chunk of the vote. Hypothetically, a candidate *could* win just because they have a large party. They could just go around recruiting random Ministers of [insert activity here]. Does no one see a problem with this?

If a party could get that many people to commit, then that means they have a lot of support anyway.

03-03-2004, 08:56 PM
Yeah, I do see what you are saying, but the voters outside of the party will make the difference. I know what you mean though. It's like say: Hector gets 5 votes from his staff and I get 3 from mine, yet Hector gets the majority vote of the members and wins by 2 votes. I could have won had his staff not voted. There can be many outcomes though, and I don't think that because a candidate's staff votes for their candidate, that that will guarantee their victory, although it could. It is a maybe, maybe not win, lose, situation. Does that make sense?

What you say makes sense SGH, but IMO if the difference between two candidates is a mere two or three votes, then we have worse problems. Like abysmal voter turnout.

So I based my decision on all the other posts by the users running that I've read, because I don't think that can even be answered in a single post or single thread. I wound up voting for Finrod, even though I'm supporting Hector so far in the election. That poll was kind of irrelevant. Plus I think the final vote will be handled through the PM system, right? So those polls will be disregarded.
Ultimately, Artanis is right; someone's got to clarify these rules and tell me whether or not I just accidentally screwed Hector over.

Sorry Chrys, I missed it in all the new posts.
It's hard to improve something great like Entmoot, which has been finely honed to its current excellence over the years.
However, we at the Council of Entmoot will strive to keep it as the most excellent Tolkien message board on the web by:
- Continuing to strive for good will among Mooters, which is something each member has worked toward in their time here
- We had plans to bring in a cool new smilie, but that's something bmilder has to do. We'll work with him on this.
- Promoting Entmoot and Tolkien to potential members not yet joined.

Okay pretty lame question coming up:
What's all the candidates view on spam/flaming etc.?
Nurvingiel
03-05-2004, 07:13 PM
I think, as I'm sure most people do, that flaming should be stamped out! It is unnecessary and mean-spirited. All arguments should be resolved by PM, and people should try to remember that resolution happens more easily if people try to be kind, and avoid personal attacks.
As for spam, it is less harmful than flaming. However, it is annoying and pointless. That being said, there are some threads where the occasional bit of spam is appropriate (and is therefore arguably not spam).
Cheers, Nurv

My Dear Fellow Mooters,
To say that one Mooter loves Tolkien more than another is a crime against Mooters.
All Mooters are equal in Tolkien's eyes, as well as in mine.
My duty to the Moot is long overdue.
The joys that this message board has to offer I have taken; and I feel it my duty and responsibility to take my own joy and double it, and return the joy twofold, no, even triplefold, to this wondrous Tolkien-loving board.
I admit, I am not too keen on "real" politics. But does this board need "real" politics? What are "real" politics?
All I know to rule by is my logic, my trust in the good judement of my fellow Mooters, my own good judgement, and my trust in God.
I promise you, a more sincere and straightforward (that speech was straight from the heart!) presidential candidate you will not find.
I trust you will vote for the candidate you know who will keep good his promises, make peace where needed, and who will rule with an open mind and fair judgement.

I want only say that the Electoral College has decided to make it clear what was already said in the rules of the Election (see announcemets): all qualified members are allowed to vote. That means that candidates are allowed to vote.
The candidate that receives more votes will be the President, no matter the margin he obtains to the second one.

Actually I've been working on one, I'm still tweaking my design. I hope it gets implemented as quickly as the evil one did, thanks bmiler! FM also helped me too, I didn't know it, but he proposed addidng another smilie too. <- my design though, simple yet effective.

Don't worry, though, you will have a very strong VP, should we be voted into office. :)
EDIT: He's working on a school paper. Where are his priorities?

I just want to apologize for a misunderstanding about the evil smilie. I did design a smilie just like this , but apparently, I actually didn't have anything to do with the new smilie. It was possibly Fat Middle, he was actually involved with the project. I emailed him probably quite near to when they were ready to add it, so it appeared to me that they were using my idea, when really, they were using their own idea that I thought of independently sometime after. :o

Actually, you did have something to do with it. Your email helped me to retake the idea we had have a month ago and to put Ben to work in it. :)

Now, MY candidate has hesitated to thrust herself forward, but almost all of you know her quite well! As she has always demonstrated by her kindness, helpfulness, patience, maturity, wit, sense of humor, knowledge of JRR Tolkien's work and commitment to this board, I think there could be no better candidate for President of Entmoot than Sister Golden Hair!!! :)
Some may wonder why, as admin, she should desire to be President. We can let her speak for herself on that one. However, some of her opponents, I fear, have planted notions that she's scheming to make some sort of 'power grab'. What a silly notion! As an administrator - and arguably the most visible admin present on the board - she has consistently demonstrated responsible use of power. That speaks volumes!
Arguably the most visible, but definitely the most active, and when has she ever used the power she already has inapproiately? She hasnt, that is the answer. Sister Golden Hair has always been a constant source of support for the entire population of the Entmoot, and she has always been dedicated to running a smooth, appropriate board, and has been whole-heartedly dedicated to making this a comfortable and accepting place to be.
I would say that as an admin, she has already demonstrated to everyone why she should be president, as she already has more of the level of responsibility on her shoulders than she would need as president, and we have all seen this on several occasions. This election, to not give Sister Golden Hair your vote, would be like not listening to Gandalf's wise advice. Vote for the candidate that has been pulling the weight of a President all along, vote for Sister Golden Hair

Welcome to the Open House guys! It's nice to have representatives from other parties in here. Previous questions that have been asked include, "What do you feel about spam?" as well as Tessar's excellent list of questions (from the Presidential debate thread.)
I don't think you could say SGH is the most active campaigner, but she's done a lot for the board and has been around the longest (of the candidates) as well.

Hmmm...It seems everyone is letting their VP's do all the talking. Well I'm here, and I think you all know me well enough to know that I care only for the well-being of Entmoot and the furthering in the world of Tolkien knowledge. And to enlighten "movie-only" fans to read the books!

Those are very valuable qualities Finrod, and definately needed to be President, however those are echoed through all the candidates...in order to really seperate yourself from the field you need to be unique, and have a responsible staff to help yourself....running a one man show can be seen as not willing to work in a team, as well with any workload it's more effecient to distribute it amongst a few capable people to get the highest quality work done.
Just some food for thought for all candidates.

To comment on the spam question: As an admin and former super mod, it has been my job to make Entmoot spam free. As we all know though, some spam is inevitable. It is important not to be heavy handed as long as it is not taken to extreams. Just like threads veering off topic, there must be some allowances within reason, without being heavy handed. As your president you are guaranteed with me that your rights as a mooter are protected under the rules and you are guarenteed the right to post freely without fear of reprimand or ban without due process. You can be sure that I am always here to help as admin and to fairly represent you to the Entmoot staff as your president. And although I am an admin, I am a mooter first.

Alright, there hasn't been much campaigning from my side the past few weeks. But that's going to change, from this moment I'm in the presidential race for real.
I've answered Tessar's questions in the The Official Entmoot Presidential Debate (http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=345600#post345600) thread. I will answer any further questions here as well as debate with the other candidates :)

Who says they are doctored? :p. Anyway doctored pics seemed to be popular in the past *stern look at BoP*, so why abandon a winning concept? ;)
I guess the pics will have to do for now, at least until I and the other candidates start debating.

Yeah, where are all you other candidates and your campaign pictures? How do we know whether you smile and shake hands and kiss babies and all that? :D
-------
A question I'd like to put forward to all candidates and/or their campaigners. (If it hasn't already been done) What have you contributed to Entmoot, and what can you contribute to Entmoot, as President? I don't mean the usual blah like 'I will make Entmoot a friendlier place' and stuff, I mean, how can you make ME happy that I voted for you? How will you make it fun, or more interesting?
Also, why exactly do you want to be President? (I wonder what ulterior motives you all have, except for Jonathan :D)

Yeah. And I'd like also to know why all you think that the others should not be President. A proper campaign is more about bashing other candidates than deffending ideas. You're all too polite to become President :p

In the 'entmoot presidential debate' thread, the poll is titled: "who loves Tolkien the best." Well if you love Tolkien, you are probably knowledgeable about the world of Middle-earth.
I thought we could add a little more fun and challenge to the election. God knows it needs it. I'm not sure when this poll closes, but I thought it would be fun to test the winner's knowledge of Tolkien. This would also show if the winner deserved the win. We, or someone could write up a series of question from several of the books, LotRs, the Silarillion, Unfinished Tales, and let the winner answer them. we would of course have to trust them not to cheat by looking up the answers. Say a series of 10 questions. What does everyone think?:)
Nurvingiel
03-17-2004, 02:57 PM
I'm not just saying this because I know you're more knowledgable than me, ;) but love of Tolkien isn't solely based on knowledge. It also depends how long you've had the opportunity to read the books. A 15-year-old has had at most seven or eight years, while a 35-year-old could have been reading the books for over twenty years.
But a quiz sounds fun! Is Tessar going to write it? He's good at stuff like that. (I assume you've already answered his first questionaire.)
Cheers, Nurv

Cheers, Nurv Well, I don't think you can truly be a lover of Tolkien, and then not know things. I am not talking about being one of the big scholars, but an average Tolkien fan, that would not just be limited to LotRs, but would probably exclude the HoMe series.
I have answered Tessar's questions, yes. Tessar could write it if he wishes, but they have to span at least those three books, and I think 10 questions are good enough. It would be after the poll closes, but I don't know when that is. Right now, people may still vote. Hector is leading with 7 votes, while Jonathan trails with 4.
