I am getting very excited for this new movie, and can't wait to see it. I was wondering if anyone else is looking forward to seeing this movie as well as me? The main reasons for me wanting to see it are for Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp! Although, I think that the fact that the movie is based on pirates makes it really cool anyway.

I can't wait to see it either! Where, Orlando Bloom is one reason, and pirates (sp?) is another, I say a few clips, and the spetial (sp?) effects are awsome!

This movie is on my to-see list. (No, not because of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom :p) It looks like it should be a good movie and I think pirates are cool anyway.
By the way, Silme*Christian, I love your new Mr. Bean avatar. He's the most popular guy on the 'moot now. :D

Well, I have also watch some of the movie clips and am really impressed with how real thay made the skeletons look! They did a really cool job. And I also love the fact that they gave Jack Sparrow (Johnny D.) a funny personality. It goes really well with him, and I LOVE his smile!!!!!!!:D

I really can't wait to see it! It looks fab!
I made a complete fool out of myself the other day! lol! I went with my friends to see Identity and before it started me and one of my friends went to the toilet, we came out of the door to the screens and there was a poster for POTC and we both went "Wow! OMG look how fit Orlando is! OMG it looks so good, i can't wait" and were really hysterical and looking like twits. We went back into the cinema and everyone was laughing at us and our other friend sed what were you screaming about Orlando for?!
We are not the kind of annoying girls that do that all the time it was just that time, it caught us of guard and wwe weren' expecting it! lol
We felt right wally's lol!
It's not out untill August is it?

It (POTC) is going to be in a cinema near me in a few days. I want to see it, A) cuz it looks cool, and B) because I want to see Orlando Bloom act in another movie besides LOTR.
It looks like it's gonna be good. I liked the part in the preview when the pirate says "I'll teach you the meaning of pain!" and the girl says, "Pain? Try wearin' a corset!":D

If you want to watch OB in something other than LOTR try watching Black Hawk Down! He is only in it for a "short" while. (I think it lasts forever:rolleyes: ). Also, for "hot" actors, theres Josh Heartnet, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Sam Shephard(sp?) and much much more! All in all it's a great movie, based on a true story, great book, too! OB might be hard to spot cause they all look alike, but his CN is Blackburn and he looks 18 years old and he joins the Rangers. That is all I am willing to say here, but here is a MAJOR spoiler! Beware!!!!!If you can handle the fact, then here it is, Blackburn, played by OB, dies in the begining of the movie.

well JD is a guy from a new england town, his family is slowly getting poor. he goes out to california. its about the mid 60's i think. he gets into drugs. eventually he becomes one of the largest drug dealers and importers in the country. it shows how his life is ruined and ends with him being put in jail. really is a very good movie, cant seem to describe it right, but its very dramatic. its rated R because of sex scenes, cussing, and obviously because of what its about.

Silly fangirls, Trix are for kids.
Anyway, I saw this film over the weekend, and I walked out with a rather positive impression. My full review is located here (http://www.ualberta.ca/~ntam/2003_07_01_archive.html#105820083959417966), but here's a sample:
What is most commendable about Pirates of the Caribbean is that as a successful translation of a Disneyland boat ride into a fun adventure movie that plays in the same key as Martin Campbell's The Mask of Zorro, it leads to some admirable implications. Perhaps it is only a matter of time before somebody in Hollywood figures out how to make a tolerable movie of this sort out of a video game, for instance. The real curse has nothing to do with black pearls, but franchise-motivated adaptations; we should applaud Pirates of the Caribbean for breaking it.

Saw it and I thought it was very good.
It was great to see the scenes that came directly from the ride.
It was a good translation. The story was a bit weak, but it was made up for in practically everything else. Johnny Depp was great, he added such character to the movie and was a very commendable pirate I must say. Very funny. Orlando was good, I think he did his part fine, no complaints for him.
I was dissappointed in the song though. I was hoping for a hearty jig and singing from the pirates.
But overall I was impressed.

You should see Depp in Chocolat He has a small part in it, but he plays the samll part very well. He was great in edward sicer (sp?) hands too. and if in the mood for something light and happy then watch Benny and Joon. THat was my favorite Depp movie for a long time just because of the close he wears in it. I also LOVED him in Sleepy Hollow. He was great in that. My favorite at the moment is POTC, but i have trouble keeping a favorite and i'm sure in an hour it'll swich to Sleepy hollow or something like that.

I noticed plenty of mistakes!! For example, Will's mustache? In the morning of the first day, it's the teeniest wisp of a six o'clock shadow. Then in the early afternoon of the same day, it's a full-blown mustache and goatee (spl?). WHAT?! It's still a GREAT movie anyways.

And also, when Elisabeth is ont he ship with the pirates, and she in being taken onto shore, she has no makeup on, but five minutes later she has lipstick, mascara, and eye liner on? What's up with that? Anyways, here are some stats on JD and some pictures!

I'm going to get the soundtrack of this movie tomorrow (hopefully). Well, actually, I'll put it on layaway. I can't wait!! I love the music.
The only thing that bothers me is, the movie credits said that Klaus Badelt or somebody-or-other wrote the music, at amazon.com it says that he wrote it with Hans Zimmer (which I will definately believe), and the poster says Alan Silvestri wrote it. Who wrote it already!

WHOOOOOPEEEE!
I FINALLY got to see it this weekend (I really wanted to see this one on the big screen)! Although I have some minor criticisms, it was a great movie. One fun moment was when a murmur went through the Florida audience (all people who a frequent Disney-goers, and thus have ridden Pirates of the Caribbean many times) when they showed the scene where the men are in jail and are trying to get the dog with the keys to come over. That was done EXACTLY like the ride; it was uncanny. So in addition to the chuckle, everyone commented on how cool it was that they'd done that (and how funny Depp's line was -- "You can do that FOREVER, the dog will NEVER come over," and sure enough, no matter how many years it's been since you've gone on the ride, those guys are still trying to get the dog to come over, and he still hasn't moved :D ). There were a few other moments taken directly from the ride that I noticed; I'm sure there's a website that lists all of them.
A little off-topic, but regarding the preview for The Haunted Mansion that's shown: is that also taken from the Disney ride? Is that the big thing now, basing movies on rides rather than vice-versa?:p
Elvengirl
07-29-2003, 10:50 PM
OH, I totally agree Azalea. I'm a huge Disney-goer. That part of the movie with the dog was soo funny. I'm glad they put that in. And then later Depp tries to get the dog to come over with the key. hehe :D
And yes the Hanted Mansion movie is based on the ride; another classic Disney attraction. I saw the preview and it looks like it's going to be a comedy with Eddy Murphy, which might be kind of dumb since the Haunted Mansion is supposed to be scary; but we'll see. :)
I know they made a movie out of the Tower of Terror. It was pretty good. It sounds like they are making all the rides into movies. Next we'll see Thunder Mountain Railroad The Movie.
Oh, I hope not. :D

It's not out in the UK until the 7th August. Wah.
But I managed to get to see it anyway. I think it's a great film. It was so funny. I thought it was damned clever when they steal the ship. And the way the guy puts his arm through the bars and grabs Cap'n Sparrow and you just see a bit of his skeleton arm through the moonlight. Twas a great film, but I am biased anyway as I love pirates :D

Saw it at the cinema on Thursday, opening day :D Was so great. Am still loving the effects and everything about it. But mostly I love the was Jack Sparrow speaks. I would say most of the funniest moments were thanks to him. :D
I want to know more about Bootstrap Bill, I mean, he must've been cursed too, neh? So how would losing him to Davey Jones' locker help the situation? The only solution I can think of is that he didn't steal a piece of gold from the chest, but from one of the pirates and sent it to Will. But am not sure that'd work either. If anyone can explain this please do. *is confused*

If anyone can explain this please do. *is confused* Interesting that you bring that up, because that thought crossed my mind during the second time I saw it. Bootstrap was against the crew leaving Sparrow on the island, but he didn't get stuck on the island with him, so it would seem that he stayed with the crew. If he was with the crew, it would seem that he would be cursed to. If he's cursed, he can't die, so he'd still be alive at the bottom of the ocean, right?
You bring up a good point though. Maybe he left the crew after they marooned Jack but before they took the treasure. Then he ran into them again later and realized the gold was cursed and sent a piece to Will to get back at them.
But if that's the case, why did they need his blood to lift the curse? It seems that everyone that took the gold to begin with had to be there to lift the curse. So if Bootstrap wasn't cursed, why did they need him to lift the curse?

Yes, I thought of that last one too. That leaves the only option to be that Bootstrap is in fact still alive. Unless by passing the gold onto Will he removed the curse from himself. But then surely Will would be cursed, and then Elizabeth when she stole it, but you'd think they'd've noticed if they turned into freaky undead things every full moon. And then they wouldn't need his blood.
I can think of a possible scenario, but is unlikely and complicated. If Bootstrap didn't like them because of what they did to Jack and thought they should be cursed, then maybe he...actually wait, that wouldn't work either. Was going to say maybe he paid the blood already and put his coin back and sent Will one he later came across but then they wouldn't need Turner blood. But that could work if they misunderstood the curse, and the gold required the blood of anyone who had the gold. But they spent it didn't they. Hmm.
Bootstrap must still be alive. Because even if he was dropped with a cannon strapped to him he has had ten years to get it off and walk to land. Maybe a PotC II could help us with this :D
Maybe it is a smart curse and can tell he wasn't a greedy nasty man. :D
I stayed right to the end of the credits to see the extra scene and my thought on that was NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Damn you monkey!!!

you forgot Ewan McGregor as Barbossa's evil twin they always try to double up on baddies in sequels to make it sound more exiting
Fav. bit has to be when Jack's crew steals the Pearl and the ghost pirates say "bloody pirates". my it sounded a lot better in the film.

Sorry to double post. Say, crickhollow, where ever you are, the reason I said (in the now-closed topic 'Jack Sparrow?') that Capn't Sparrow lived in the 1800's- well, now I'm thinkin' late 1700's- is because Jack said that the Black Pearl was the last real pirate ship in the Caribbean. If that's true, then the 'golden age of piracy' or whatever you call it would have been over by the time the movie is set in, so then it had to have been a ways after the 1600's and most of the 17's. They never do tell you what year it is in that movie.

To be honest, I have never met anyone who said 'dude' after everything and was being serious. Like that little turtle guy in Finding Nemo. (Is that out yet?) Mocking it is. And There is absolutely nothing wrong with you using savvy, as a word, but out of context it sounds like the person using it doesn't know what it means, savvy? ;)

You're right. The whole timeline of the thing is not worth bothering with. Historically the movie is about as accurate as a bottle of shower gel in an Ancient Greek movie. For example. Our dear Elizabeth would've been wearing a corset since she was about 4. And her whole attitude would've had any girl locked up by any father of the time. But it doesn't matter because the movie was great.

It's not a hull and a rudder and sails- that is what a ship needs. But what a ship is- what the Black Pearl really is- is freedom.

Murtogg: Ah, the Dauntless is the power in these waters, true enough, but there’s no ship that can match the Interceptor for speed.
Jack : I’ve heard of one, supposed to be very fast, nigh un-catchable…the Black Pearl.
Mullroy: Well…there’s no real ship that can match the Interceptor.
Murtogg: The Black Pearl is a real ship.
Mullroy: No, no it’s not.
Murtogg: Yes, it is, I’ve seen it.
Mullroy: You’ve seen it?
Murtogg: Yes.
Mullroy: You haven’t seen it.
Murtogg: Yes, I have.
Mullroy: You’ve seen a ship with black sails, that’s crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?
Murtogg: No.
Mullroy: No.
Murtogg: But I have seen a ship with black sails. [ Jack slips away while they banter]
Mullroy: Oh, and no ship that’s not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails therefore couldn’t possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl. Is that what you’re saying?
Murtogg: [nods] No.

Why does everybody take Jack for drunk all the time? He isn't. The only time he got drunk was on the island he is governor off when he was with Elizabeth. The rest o' the time he's just walking on his sea-legs.
I quoted the whole movie through!! I know, weird of me, but I did it. The only lines I really forgot were all the commands: "Heave to", "Hoist the mainsail" . . . all that sort of stuff.

I liked the Depp character. He was a good foil to Bloom's smarmy genuiness. And he had the whole Groucho Marx meets Indiana Jones thing down pat. But his permenantly drunk mode kept reminding me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Jack is great. He just such a cool character. Will on the otherhand is terrible. He's an idiot. Elizabeth is a Mary-Sue character in my eyes. Barbossa is cool. I think Geoffery Rush did a really great job with him. And I like the monkey...:p

Just saw it. Wish I hadn't. I enjoyed the special effects, but the acting was pushed and not believable. Johnny Depp has done so much better (and looked much hotter). Orlando Bloom was horrible. (Can he act at all? I'm just wondering. :p) Keira Knightly sucked. (How did she get her job anyway?) Geoffrey Rush was the only decent leading actor among them. I did find the scene with the pirates in jail tempting the dog with the keys funny. :D

It was the best movie I have seen for a long time.
It was real FUN. The movements of Jack Sparrow are caused by anything else but NOT because he is drunk all the time. It must have been due to some ancient injury (like Eric the Half-a-bee)
or Cyril Conolly

btw, Evenstar (please don't think I'm trying to be Miss Goody-Two-Shoes, just thought you'd like to know), the quote that's in your sig goes
JACK: "Very well, I confess. It was my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, and then proceed to raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasly black guts out."

Orlando Bloom is definately better looking in Pirates. After seeing it, and then seeing him in The Towers, he looks pathetically rediculous in the blonde wig and blue contacts. I like him better with his natural color hair and eyes.
YAY!! The DVD came out! I'm very happy. I can't watch it until Saturday (mom bought it and we all have to watch it together. the rest of the nights this week are busy:mad: :( ) I;m going back to walking around talking like Jack Sparrow again, though. His British accent was, IMHO, brilliant.
I have a hard time deciding wether Bloom is a good actor or not, but he did indeed seem a bit lame, compared to Depp (which did an excellent job, so that's not very surprising).

I. Totally. loved. this. movie
what was your favorite scence out of the movie?
Will : Where’s Elizabeth ?
Jack : She’s safe, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word really except for Elizabeth who is, in fact, a woman.
Barbossa: I must admit, Jack , I thought I had ye figured. It turns out that you’re a hard man to predict.
Jack : Me? I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest... Honestly. It's the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they're going to do something incredibly… stupid.

My favorite part is the one titled 'Pirates of the Caribbean; the Curse of the Black Pearl'. I have soooooooo many favorite parts that I can't help but say I love the whole movie.
Ummmmm, I'll name a few parts that are really great, though.
Sparrow's face when he sees Will up in the rafters. I love the grin, and then the way his face falls.
The huge CLUNK when Will breaks the candle holder.
"I should have told you every day since the moment I met you.. I love you."
"This is a beautiful sword. I expect the man who made it to show the same care and devotion in every aspect of his life."
"That would be the French."
"You will then spend the rest of the journey contemplating all possible meanings of the phrase 'Silent as the grave'. Do I make myself clear?"
"Inescapeably clear."
"WHY'S THE RUM GONE?!"
"It is my intention to comandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid pillage plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasly black guts out!"
"Mr. Cotton! Do you think you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay true in the face of danger and almost certain death?"
"Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate."
"But I can't get this ship into Tortuga all by my onesies; savvy?"
"ELIZABETH!!" (from Norrington and Will)
I have tons more, but I gotta go now. Namarie mellonea nin!!

Barbossa: Why, thank you, Jack.
Jack: You're welcome.
Barbossa: No, we named the monkey 'Jack.'
ah, i just got through watching this movie 'bout half an hour ago, and i swear there is this one scene where the names 'Will,' 'Elizabeth,' and 'Jack' are said as three separate lines one right after the other... gah! now i can't remember when it was! it just sort of struck me as funny while i was watching it...
pretty much everything Johnny Depp says is funny to some extent, he definitely made this movie. i don't think it would have been anywhere near as good as it is without him.

The classic quote for me, has to be from Johnny Depp...
"But why is the rum gone?"
" She’s safe, just like I promised. She's all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we're all men of our word really except for Elizabeth who is, in fact, a woman."

Nononono!! They both say it at seperate times (Norrington when she faints off the cliff, Will numerous times- my fave being when he's trapped in the hold of the Interceptor during the battle). They never say it together, that's not what I meant.:( Sorry for confusing you.
More faves:
"You think this wise, boy? Crossing blades with a pirate?"
"Me hold is burstin' wi' swag. Tha' bit o' shine matters t' us. Why?"
"Oh, well if it's so worthless there's no point in me keeping it."
Gibbs: "Well, I'll tell ye. He waded out into the sea, and he stayed there three days and three nights, 'til all manner o' sea-creatures became.. aclimated to his presence. Then, on the fourth morning, he roped a couple of sea turtles, lashed 'em together and made a raft!"
Will: "He roped a couple of sea turtles."
Gibbs: "Aye, sea turtles!"
Will: "What did he use for rope?"
"How's that? the key's run off."
Jack: "Anna Maria!"
Anna (*slap!!*): "You stole my boat!"
Jack: "Actually- " *slap* "-borrowed!! Borrowed it without permission! I meant to bring it back."
Anna: "But you didn't!"
Jack: "You'll get another one!"
Will: "A better one!"
Jack: "A BETTER one!"
Will: "That one."
Jack: "What one?" *looks* "That one?! Aye! That one!"
"If you were waiting for the opprotune moment.. that was it."
Barbosa: "You expect t' leave me standin' on some beach wi' naught but a name watching you sail away with my ship..?"
Jack: "No. I expect to leave you standing on some beach with no name at all, watching me sail away with my ship, and then I'll shout the name back to you, savvy?"
Barbosa: "That still leaves us with the problem o' me standin' on some beach with naught but a name and your word it's the one I need."
Jack: "Of the two of us, I am the only one who has not commited mutiny. Therefore, my word is the one we'll be trusting. 'Course, I really owe you a thanks. If you hadn't marrooned me on that island, I'd have an equal share in that curse right along with the rest of you. Funny ol' world, ain't it?" *proffers the apple*
Another one of my absolute favorite parts in the movie has no words at all. It's right after Sparrow and Will fall to with the swords in the smithy scene. The clanging of their swords synchopates with the beat of the music for a few bars. The sound of that is sooooooooo cool! I just love that part!!

lol oh rite i get you know. :) no problem.
I like it when Jack and Will are fighting on that waggon thing and they are on each end and it's just bobbing around lol
One of my favourite parts as well is, Johnny Depps entrance to the movie in that sinking boat and when Will breaks that thing in the governers house. lol

I also love that first entrance in the movie with Johnny Depp, it was probably the best part. He is sooo cute! But so is OB
I also liked tha part when JD is making such a big fuss over 'The Rum!" :pThat was great. but I think that all JD's parts were good, he just played Jack really well.

Jack: No! Not good! Stop! Not good! What are you doing? You burned all the food, the shade! The rum!
Elizabeth : Yes, the rum is gone.
Jack : Why is the rum gone?
Elizabeth : One, because it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire Royal Navy is out looking for me, do you really think that there is even the slightest chance that they won’t see it?
Jack : But why is the rum gone?

Ok, I admit it, one of the main reasons I originally went to see this movie was because Mr Bloom starred in it. And because I love the ride and was curious to see what new marketing ploy Disney had come up with now. However, I absolutely loved it, and found myself liking Mr Depp's character far more. I am casting no slurs on Orlando's acting, as I thought it was great. However, Will Turner is naive, wet (occasionally in a good way - after swimming from the Interceptor ;)) and quite boring. Captain Sparrow was amusing and complicated, and I was most unnerved to find that I found him far more attractive. I was aware that people considered Johnny attractive, but having only seen him in Edward Scissorhands before, I hadn't agreed.
Anyway, I was impressed that Disney actually managed to produce a (relatively) adult movie, or rather, a movie for those of us who refuse to grow up and still dream of piracy on the high seas. :D
My favourite scenes were definitely the ones with Jack and Elizabeth on the island, including the deleted one on the DVD.
End of random babbling.

I'm quite glad that they did not put that extra island bit in the movie. I liked her having walked all the way around the island and I like that they had him checking the flintlock (he was lucky the pouder didn't get wet), but I didn't like the thing with the scars and the bullet holes. It fit with Jack's character, sure, but it took too much away from his mysteriousness.
I do love that part:
Barbosa: Thank ye, Jack.
Sparrow: Your welcome.
Barbosa: Oh not you! We named the monkey Jack.
The grin on that monkey's face sends me laughing every time: :D
p.s. Has anybody watched the commentaries? The one with Jack Davenport and Keira Knightly is hilarious: "You need a stunt girl for running up stairs?!" I haven't watched all of it yet, but the one with Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp is great, too. I love it in the beginning when they're talking about "Young Mister Bloom" and how he wanted to be 'cool like Johnny', but Verbinski kep telling him "You're not cool yet! Your still a dork!" and he'd be like "Oh, right, dork!" :D lol

I think he was just keeping them enamored with a tall tale. Featuring himself as the hero, of course. Probably so that when he was finished he could talk them into going and getting a bite to eat or something so he could steal the boat- ship, ship!- out from under their noses. Elizabeth's fainting wasn't in his plan, I suppose.;)

Cannons, technique, swordsmanship... Stuff like that. I'm going to buy some books on piracy so I can roleplay effectively.

I FINALLY GOT ITTTT!!!!!!!!!
do you realize that they're making a sequel to PotC? oh i wish they wouldn't....they should be satisfied with that one..because it was really good! to quote the director " how many good pirate movies are really out there?"

I heard about it before and I didn't like the idea at all. Sequels are never as good as the original movie.
They should be satisfied with ONE good movie.

Hmm. I'm just wondering, if they made a POTC sequal, what would they do with it?
There is not that much of a plot left.
I mean, other than the fact they could have a movie with Jack sparrow and the black pearl, I don't think there is much left you can do with the story.
And yah, most sequals are just a desperate attempt to get some more money.
Lady of Darkness

besides, the sequel cannot in anyway be as good as the original. not one little snowflake of a way.

you know, it would just figure if it was better...it would be ironic...

Maybe the just get Elizabeth kidnapped again. Or something like that.
But that story is OOOOOOLD!
Right, an obvious attempt to earn some more money.

Yea that's origional  ;)
I wouldn't be happy to see a sequel made. It's better to end on a successful movie than to make another which is almost never as good.

i just can't picture Will and Elizabeth qith kids... they wouldn't be able to go on any pirate-y type adventures!

my thoughts exactly Lady Ravyn. because can you imagine it? "come on Elizabeth we're being attacked!" "WEll I'm TRYING Will, but the children aren't ready!" "why did we ever have them in the bloody first place??!!!!"
lol...that's my interpretation.... lol

Maybe they are having their children kidnapped or something and therefore Will and Elizabeth are asking Jack for help.
Just a thought.
Lady of Darkness

that would be good..but just not the same... but knowing them they'll make Elizabeth or Will be captured again by some old geezer. oo..i have an idea..during their wedding day... same ol plot eh?
oo they could have Will's life as a pirate and how Elizabeth has changed and everything... and then how they are called to help Port Royal defend itself..yea...that's it...
LoD
ps...it's not really a bad idea

OOOOOOOOOOOOO... yummy... I mean, even if it is a sequel, I'm still gonna go see it because i mean, it's Johnny Depp, one of the greatest actors of all time, Orlando Bloom, who is really good also and Pirates. What else could you ask for??!!!

hmmm, maybe a plot?
Well, I'll wait and see. All this thinking doesn't help. We will have to wait.
Hmm, as usual in these movies weddings can never be just perfect, there has to be something stupid, so I guess they are spoiling the wedding with something.
