I couldn't find a thread on this, so I'm starting one. Sorry if it's redundant.

We just got the DVD and I think I'm in love! (for the umteenth time) What a fantastic movie! The style was beautiful and it was extremely creative . . . and man, can Ewan McGregor sing!!

So anyone else seen Moulin Rouge?

Khamûl
05-19-2002, 10:56 PM
Nope. Haven't seen it. Probably should, but I haven't yet. Might have time to watch it now that school's out. It had better be good, since it beat Fellowship of the Rings out of an Oscar.

I can recite the whole of the elephant love song medley with my friend and we always used to get told of for singing Come What May tooloud!!

Did you ever see it in the cinema?
I went into such hysterics that my friend actually had to start shaking me in an atempt to stop me! She didnt succeed!

Am listening to the soundtrack right now actually!

'Until the end of time
Come what may
Cooomee whatt mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
IIIIIIIIII wil love you until my dying day!!!
Oh come what may!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wil love you (i will love you)
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place.
Come what may!!!!!!'

O.K., let's talk about the songs! Here are the songs in the order from my opinion of best to least:

1. Diamond Dogs
2. Because We Can
3. Your Song
4. Come What May
5. Elephant Love Medley
6. Children of the Revolution
7. El Tango de Roxanne
8. Nature Boy (both of them)
9. Hindi Sad Diamonds
10. Complainte De Butte
11. Hindi Sad Diamonds
12. Sparkling Diamonds
13. Lady Marmalade
14. Rythm of the Night

Can everyone else do this too? Please? I'll be happy if you do!

I think it was a great step to incorporate the most famous love songs of all time. I mean, McGregor's character was supposed to be a great writer. How could the screenwriters come up with original stuff that wasn't cheesy? Instead, they were able to laugh at themselves.

I loved Roxanne too. I think it was my favorite song. Did anyone notice the symbolism in the lighting? McGregor was under a normal light most of the time, while Nicole was in a pale blue light. Then, at the end, maybe for the final twenty minutes, McGregor was also under the blue light...draw your own conclusions. You've probably all seen it more often than I have.

Ok, well, I've seen Moulin Rouge 5 times, once in the cinema and four times on DVD/video. And two of those were in the same week.

I too can do the entire Elephant Love Medley, and when I got bored in my Tech lesson I'm ashamed to say I spent the whole time singing Your Song and ELM under my breath. [defensively] Well, it was VERY boring.

Unlike you people though, I've never cried at it. Not once. Please don't have me killed or anything, but whenever I watch it and Satine's dying, I try to work myself up to cry, and then Christian starts sobbing like a woman. I do not joke.
And then I always start giggling.

Also, am I the only person (correction, one of 2 ppl) who think that when Christian sings the ELM, he looks like a bad Elvis impersonator?

Don't get me wrong, I adore the movie. It's hysterically funny, and the songs are AMAZING. Don't you dare mock them.
Hmmm Faramir. Lets see. Bear in mind this is from the soundtrack, cos they're different on the movie.

1.Rhythm of the Night [why did you put this at the bottom? On the soundtrack at least, it rules.]
2.Your Song
3.ELM
4.Lady Marmalade (can't decide what order I want these 3 to go in. They're all amazing)
5.El Tango de Roxanne
6.Come What May
7. I know I'm going from the soundtrack, but from the movie The Show Must Go On comes here
8.Sparkling Diamonds
9. Like a Virgin (movie again)
10.Because we Can
11.The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)
12.Children of the Revolution
13.Diamond Dogs
14.Hindi Sad Diamonds
15.Complainte de la Butte
16.Nature Boy (always skip it)

I think I've got all, or at least most of them here. Amd they're vaguely in order, but I can't really be sure. Rhythm of the Night is just the best! It's so great for dancing to!

I wonder if you can tell anything about someone's personality from the order of this. Faramir? Strawberry? Others who I can't remember the name of? Any thoughts?

Yesss!! Other Moulin fans!! We just got the DVD and I've now watched it five times in as many days.

I couldn't possibly rank the songs, they're all so good. I agree about Roxanne being the most powerful part though, and I love Your Song and the Elephant Love Medley. Ewan is hot! His smile is so cute (awwww...) and he has a gorgeous voice. I was amazed the first time he sang.

Starr Polish
05-25-2002, 12:20 AM
I saw it in the 'budget theater' the first time, and was about blown away when Ewan started singing.

Roxanne is an amazing song. I had a CD with that and "Come What May" on it, and used to sing them both really, really loud in the shower. I can even sing the harmonies in "Come What May". Hehe. Choir buff.

I have to sing parts of "Roxanne" an octave higher though, not having a male voice.

Lady of Darkness
05-25-2002, 04:02 PM
Everyone I meet(almost) and who has seen Moulin Rouge says I would be a good Satine. pulease!! I only have the voice. The soundtrack is to die for.
Come what May!
Come what may!
And Iwill love you, until my dieing day!
That's my fav. song.
whoever says Movie Stars can't sing watch this movie.
I heard that on reason Tom Cruise broke up w/ Nicole Kidman is b/c Tom can't sing and he wanted Nicole to only play Satine if he Could be Cristian. Jerk!!
LOD HEHEHEHEHEHEHE
being a soprano 1, I have to sing everything except Satine's lines higher.
Whoever hates Moulin Rouge should Die!!(just joking)(i'm more likely to get TB b/c I work with horses scary!) (anyone know what track it is when Cristian and co first get to the Moulin Rouge?)

Your Moulin Rouge obsession pales in comparison to mine. :p

Truth! Beauty! Freedom! and above all things... LOVE

Check out this Moulin Rouge (sort of) wallpaper I created... (http://ironparrot.dhs.org/pics/moulin-clones1024.jpg)

The first soundtrack really doesn't do justice to the music in the movie. Too many crummy remixes and alternate versions of songs, and almost nothing from Craig Armstrong's score. The second release was far better.

Hmm, I rather like it, IronParrot. :)

I love the unconscious Argentinean! So funny. Moulin Rouge: laugh at the beginning, cry at the end, sing the whole way through. Marvellous! I actually like Your Song better than Come What May. I love how Satine is rolling on the ground having fit and then she just stops when Christian starts singing. Elephant Love Medley's the best though. And Roxanne. Hell, it's all so good!

Lady of Darkness
05-28-2002, 05:43 PM
Excuse me??!! EXCUSE ME??????!!!!!!!! did you actually say that you like Your Song better than Come What May???!!! You haven't listened to the soundtrack then. oh well! *shrugs* difference in oppinion. I like most of the songs except for #15, the remix thingamajigger. Your song is really good. So is Roxanne
Your Song:
My gift is my song. and this one's for you. and youi can tell everybody that this is your song.
Come What MAY:
seasons may change winter to spring, but I love you until the end of time.
So, listen to them again and then tell me that you can't like Come What May the best. If you could dediate one song to someone off this Soundtrack, what song would it be and who would it goto.
I would give Come What May to my Grandmother(died of Cancer 3 days after my b-day 5 or 6 yrs ago) and Your Song to My best bud. She's going through a tough time in her life right now. her fav. song is Roxanne.

I just watched the film again today for the fifth or sixth time, on my DVD. (You'd have to be positively nuts not to watch this movie on widescreen...)

My school is putting on a stage production of Moulin Rouge! tomorrow... it promises to be great. Among other things, a girl I used to have quite a thing for is playing Satine.

I agree. They need another hot guy in that movie :D :D :D :D :D
I'm still pissed because Nicole Kidman didn't get best actress for Moulin Rouge and she soooooo deserved it! GRRRR dumbass people!!!! DIE DIE DIE DIE!!

Lady of Darkness, I agree re: Kidman's performance being Oscar-worthy - it's one of my favourite performances in the musical genre, and I've seen a lot of musicals. However, I can't really comment on last year's Best Actress Oscar since I never ended up seeing Monster's Ball...

It's true, though, that musicals are often the genre that is most demanding of the actors involved.

Lady of Darkness
03-20-2003, 08:07 PM
the really annoying thing is that she sounds GOOD singing, while alot of actors DON'T! I mean, she has a GORGEOUS voice. I mean, I sing also, and like everyone I know sings, and they all say that she has a beautiful voice. dude, someone should smack some people upside their heads!! now if I can find my bow and sword, maybe we can fix the evilness of the world.....
LoD
grrrr*seethes*

No, fixing the evil in the world cannot be done through bows and swords. It has to be done through song.

I absolutely ADORE Moulin Rouge, I saw it so many times and cried my heart out. I love Sparkling Diamonds and play it so loudly in my car. It's an ace film because it appeals to every emotion... And I agree, Nicole Kidman should have one last year, I think she is an amazing actress and I think Renee Zellweger was so rough in Chicago it's unbelievable. Catherine Zeta jones was brill however and deserved her oscar. But I have Moulin Rouge 1 and 2, the collector's edition and I prefer the 2nd cd 'Come What May' version. It's more tingley.

LoD means Lady of Darkness, eh? I should have figured that out immediately. Gosh, I feel stupid...

I saw the musicals 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Les Misérables' when I was in London. I think both of them was better than Moulin Rouge. Please don't think less of me for saying this in the Moulin Rouge thread.

Jonathan
04-23-2003, 01:44 PM
Doesn't the song fit into the conversations in other musicals, then? At least it did in 'Les Misérables'.
I really recommend 'Les Misérables', Victor Hugo was a genius (he didn't write the songs to the musical, but whatever). Too bad I was quite young when I saw it, I can't remember the musical clearly. I have to see it again some time.

No, I haven't joined the fan club, and I don't plan on doing so. Not really keen on cliques within cliques. The LOTR fandom (and my growing Cowboy Bebop obsession) is enough for me. I have, however, written a MR fanfic on fanfiction.net under the pen name Sangwaelen. Don't know if you would like it though.
Crying. No, no.

What is the fanfic about? I mean can you tell it in a few words, my eyes hurt to much to read something too long.

I'm sorry about your horse :(.

It's kind of hard to describe without giving it away. It's basically stream of conciousness of Satine while she's dying. I use actual dialogue from the movie, and play with an idea. It's pretty short, but if you read it, make sure you read the author's note!

Honestly? I like the actors and actresses just perfectly...I think they work awesomely. what about you?

and even continuing this... what would you like to change about it if you had to change it?

my answer: Satine dieing and the duke and the person who tells the duke about Satin and Christian. duke should die. the person who tells should die. it should be happily enver after. then we can have warm fuzzy feelings all the time!!! yay!!!:D

Did they have electricity at the Moulin Rouge at 1900?

Jonathan
06-03-2003, 10:12 AM
A freeway is a motorway.
A highway, I believe, is a big road with lots of traffic. So I guess you can say freeways are highways.
When I consulted a German dictionary (my Swedish dictionary was of no use), I saw that 'highway' could be translated to 'Landstraße'. That (should) mean 'country road'.
And we all know the German word for freeway; Autobahn :D

I think electricity came to Paris in the 1880's, so it's likely that they had electric power at the Moulin Rouge 20 years later. The Moulin Rouge was surely a modern place during its time.

They wanted to include in the story, that Zidler needed money because he had spent to much money on electricity. But then the movie would have been longer .....

actually, the Autobahn is technically translated "Motorway" or "superhighway". even though, freeway in German is also Schnellstraße. straße, as you guys prolly already know, is German for street.
Landstraße you are right about: it can mean country road, but it also can mean freeway, road or country lane. it is in fact feminine.
anything else you wanna know in german?

I also thought it would be my thing and I would really enjoy it but thought it was really kinda just weird.

I had that with American Beauty. When I first saw it I really hated it, then two years later it aired on television and I thought, let's give it another try, maybe I like it now ... and now I like it because it's just my kind of movie.
Just try it again.

I love the soundtrack. It is really good. Baz Luhrman really knows what he is doing.
