Here we go with part 9. The same rules apply as before.

Basically, you take a quote and remove every second letter, and put a slash between words, and punctuation marks. A solution must include all words solved correctly and the correct speaker identified. Whoever solves the last element, be it quote, speaker, or both, posts the next one. It is not necessary for the one solving to say who it is said to, anything about the context, or what book it's found in.

Example: "I/_i_l/_i_e/_o_/a/_a_e/,/_n_/I/_h_l_/c_l_/y_u/_t_n_."

Answer: "I will give you a name, and I shall call you Sting." Bilbo Baggins (from The Hobbit)

Anything from the books: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, or Unfinished Tales is fair game. No movie quotes.

Suggestions for posting:
Some gamers find this method best, fastest, easiest and most accurate. When you've found your quote, type it all in without blanks, simply using the '/' instead of a space, as well as before and after each punctuation mark. Just after a punctuation mark can be a convenient place for a carriage return, if the spacing looks good. After typing, check for spelling and to see that all the words are correct. Then go through and replace every other letter with an underscore '_' - this goes quickly if you use the 'forward arrow' key to advance, use the 'delete' key and then add the underscore where the letter was.

Oh - and we try our best to solve the quotes without looking them up. However, if the one who posted the quote is away or not responding, a player may look up an attempted full solution to see if it was correct before moving on and posting the next quote.

I believe Earniel is up next to start us off.

Or... maybe better to have two separate threads - a special one for HoME, and then everything else. I'm just afraid those who consider themselves 'basic' players (some of who I think have only read Hobbit & LOTR) would feel sidelined when a 'difficult' quote came up.
I don't think we should split up the game, though. The players that stick to basic can still decipher the cut-up words, but they'd at least have a warning that they might not be able to identify the speaker. It's very rare for someone to solve one quote, speaker and all, in one go. So the 'basic' players would not be find themselves excluded from participating at least a little in the 'difficult' quotes.

Also, already part NINE? Whoa.

There is one point that you haven't noticed, and that is the secret entrance.
For see that rune on the West side, and the hand pointing to it from the other runes?
That marks a hidden passage to the Lower Halls.

From The Hobbit. I think Gandalf speaking to Thorin and the Dwarves.
(could be Elrond, but I think it's Gandalf)

Even Gollum may have something yet to do?
But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring.
The quest would have been in vain, even at the bitter end.
So let us forgive him! For the Quest is achieved, and now, all is over.
I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.

Dang, DPR, ten minutes. Give someone else a chance, will you? :p

EDIT: As for including HoME and Children of Húrin, I agree with Eärniel. Everybody has texts they're more comfortable with than others. Yes, I've read them all, but I read The Hobbit a loooooooooong time ago, and have no desire ever to do so again. So I'm not going to get Hobbit quotes to save my life. Or the really obscure non-Eldar related Lord of the Rings quotes, as the history of Hobbits and Men in Middle-earth just isn't my interest. But I can still have fun trying to guess these quotes - the way we have this set up here anyone can participate, even if they don't know the quote when it's finally revealed.

In addition, if people have read The Silmarillion and The UT, they have a fair-to-middling chance of being able to guess a speaker, as most characters in the HoME are in one of those two texts.

We could do a sort of a test-run with including the categories for a few months and evaluate afterwards. If most participants of the game dislike the distinction between basic and difficult categories, we can scrap the idea and go back to the way we do it now.

This is super hard to do on a small-screened computer with a super long quote like that one!

Note:
Every now and then,
when you're typing a huge quote like that,
add some returns so it's not all carrying on
past the edge of the page, just like,
after punctuation or a pause in the syntax of the quote.
Makes it easier for when you do have a tiny screen!

It needs but one foe to breed a war, not two, Master Warden.
And those who have not swords can still die upon them.
Would you have the folk of Gondor gather for herbs only,

The speaker is indeed Eowyn.

DPR - your last post is all correct except the 'for' in the third line. Here's where we now stand:

"It needs but one foe to breed a war, not two, Master Warden.
And those who have not swords can still die upon them.
Would you have the folk of Gondor gather /_o_/ herbs only,

And it is not always good to be healed in body.

The house of Hador? Ah, so you're related to that tool who stole a Silmaril and by marriage to that crazy lady who had long conversations with my half-cousin and thought she was good enough to marry his brother. Right. The word "now" is incorrect. The rest of the quote is correct, and it was indeed Gandalf.

Morgoth, Maedhros, and Maglor are the only ones who ever stole Silmarils. Beren recovered one from a crown somebody left laying on the floor, but that isn't the same thing, especially since he didn't keep it. He gave it to Middle Earth's oldest special olympian.

In all seriousness, though, neither race of children are better than the other.

Correct on the words, Valandil. Correct on the speaker, Curufin. You're up.

This is one of the great shorter quotes, IMO.

That's my boy Fingon. This quote gives me chills when I hear it.

Utúlie'n Aurë! Aiya Eldalia ar Atanatáni, Utúlie'n Aurë!
The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men,
the day has come!

I don't know if my spelling is correct. I hear it much more often than I read it. I'm a dumb audio book listener, you know. ;)

Curufin
04-13-2008, 10:59 AM
'Eldalia' is wrong. By one letter. The last one.

(special hint because it's in Elvish, ;))

Everything else is right.

EDIT: Should I let him have it? I don't know if there are special rules for guessing Elvish...;)

The Dread Pirate Roberts
04-13-2008, 01:47 PM
I'll guess it's Eldalie then. There may be accents in there somewhere but I still don't know how to do accents without copying/pasting them.

Curufin
04-13-2008, 01:48 PM
Don't worry about the accents. ;)

It's Eldalië, but the 'e' is good enough. Your go.

Hey - you quoters should try the "Riddling" thread too. It's more free-form. People just toss out riddles, more than one at a time - answer as you solve them, no obligation to post one yourself (though it's always nice). Keith K does a great job writing most of them.

They are all part of one story. Add to that the fact that there are huge volumes of work that are rough drafts of the published works and you've got a lot of overlapping stuff to sort through. Anyway, when we get Val's confirmation, (I could be off on a word or two), I'll post the next quote.

Hint #1: Until Cirdan, all the guesses so far had been in the speaker's family. That should at least narrow down the race.
Hint #2: The last missing word is a place, though that is probably obvious from the context already.
Hint #3: The "fairer things" he refers to, is a woman.

This is mostly me seeing the funny inserts we COULD put there. Until further notice, my guess is tireless.

Lucky Finrod! They have WiFi in Mandos!!! WOOT!!!

All guess are, at this point, incorrect.

diceless, dimeless, fileless (wouldn't that be nice?), fiveless (a world without FIVES???), giveless (that would stink), hikeless, kiteless, mileless...

I'll say mileless while I think of others.

Even though I bet Middle-Earth and all its surrounding areas used metres like Europe does!

Nope. :)

Wow, this is increasing my post count quite quickly. :p

Nikeless... no shox for elves!... pineless... pipeless, sineless (I know a bunch of people who'd love to live there!), tideless?

Howsabout tideless?

Midge
04-17-2008, 05:08 PM
Once we get through all these, DPR, we'll know it doesn't end in "-less" and we'll be right back where we started.

tileless, timeless!

Forget tideless.
I pick timeless.

Timeless is correct. :)

NO, not Gandalf, but the quote is correct.

There's more to come yet or I'm mighty mistook.
Lots and none at all, it is.
No burrahobbits, but lots of these here dwarves.
That's about the/ s_a_e/ of it!

It's one of the three trolls in The Hobbit. I'll guess Bert?
And is that space before the 's' in the last unsolved word supposed to be a letter or nothing at all? I'm stumped... is it "shape"?

The space before the 's' was just so the post wouldn't run out of the window. Shape is indeed the last word, and the rest of the quote is also correct. The speaker, however is not.

For the less even as for the greater there is some deed that he may
accomplish but once only; and in that deed his heart shall rest.
It may be that I can unlock my jewels, but never again shall I make their like;

slain; first of all the Eldar in Aman.

I'm going to be away until Sunday evening, so I apologize for not being able to give corrections in the meantime. I hope it is sufficiently difficult and that everyone is sufficiently busy with other things as I am, that this won't be a problem. If it is easy and someone solves it, feel free to self-confirm and move on.
