A second thread for this game, since we went well over 1000 posts. Featuring anything from LOTR appendices, forwards, etc. Picking up the action from the last several posts of the first thread:

- - - - - - - - -

The Fourth Age?

That one is correct - your turn, Curubethion. :)

Curubethion
09-17-2005, 11:44 AM
What is the Gondorian name of Mount Doom? (not Orodruin, that's elvish)

Spock
09-17-2005, 11:50 AM
Amon Amarth.

Curubethion
09-17-2005, 11:57 AM
 Correct! Thought that one would keep you all busy. :D

Spock
09-18-2005, 11:01 AM
What was the closest relationship between dwarves and elves. (parties involved).?

Telcontar_Dunedain
09-18-2005, 02:18 PM
Gimli & Legolas?

Spock
09-20-2005, 12:17 PM
I posted a reply yesterday but obviously it didn't take.

Look closely at the question and then try again.

The elves of Hollin and the dwarves who lived in Moria?

The elves of Hollin and the dwarves who lived in Moria?

You are on the right track but the wrong train. :D

Elves of Lothlorien and Gimli?

Spock
09-20-2005, 07:07 PM
Elves of Lothlorien and Gimli?

Also on the right road but the wrong exit. ;)

Spock
09-23-2005, 02:30 PM
I'm asking Rconsole to post the next question. As a new member lets give him/her a chance :D

Rconsole
09-24-2005, 01:29 PM
alright but what was the answer?

New question: Name the Four landmarks that border Eriador.

Radagast The Brown
09-24-2005, 02:35 PM
The Misty Mountains and hte rivers Lhun, Gwathlo and Glanduin?

Rconsole
09-24-2005, 05:13 PM
2/4 the Misty Mountains and the Glanduin are right

Curubethion
09-24-2005, 06:13 PM
Are the Ered Luin included?

Rconsole
09-24-2005, 06:17 PM
no,

I'mlooking for 2 mountain ranges and 2 rivers, so that leaves 1of each :)

Radagast The Brown
09-25-2005, 06:44 AM
Decided to check it:
Eriador was of old the name of all the lands between the misty mountains and the blue; in the South it was bounded by the Greyflood and the Glanduin that flows into it above Tharbad. At its greatest Arnor included all Eriador,.."Except Rivendell, Eregion and the lands west of Lune the river.
So we have it all? Gwathlo, Misty Mountains, Ered Luin/Lune, Glanduin?

Rconsole
09-25-2005, 02:08 PM
It was in the quote:

Misty Mountains, Blue Mountains, Greyflood, Glanduin

:)
go ahead

Radagast The Brown
09-25-2005, 02:49 PM
Not me, Curubethion said the last answer. :) Ered Luin.

Rconsole
09-25-2005, 02:59 PM
but Ered Luin wasn't included, it was the Blue Mountains.

Radagast The Brown
09-25-2005, 03:04 PM
Ered Luin are the Blue Mountains. And Gwathlo is Greyflood.

Rconsole
09-25-2005, 03:16 PM
oh..alright, but they are divided...ok then :)

Curubethion
09-25-2005, 03:21 PM
Ered Luin is the elvish name of the Blue Mountains.

Spock
09-27-2005, 12:47 PM
So who is the next questioner????????????????????????????????????

Radagast The Brown
09-27-2005, 03:43 PM
Curubethion.

Rconsole
09-27-2005, 03:43 PM
well RTB posted 3/4 and Curubethion finished it off, so technically Curubethion should ask the next question because he was the first with the whole answer

Curubethion
09-27-2005, 08:55 PM
Oh, nice. Ok...who is Gimli's 4th cousin 3 times removed? (does anyone know genealogical terms?...I don't know what it is exactly... :o )

Spock
09-27-2005, 10:58 PM
Sneezy? :D

Curubethion
09-27-2005, 11:19 PM
Sorry...no :D
Just so that we won't rely on my crippled genealogy terms...I will tell you this about our mystery person: this dwarf rocks! (somewhat literally)

Spock
09-27-2005, 11:29 PM
Durin?

Curubethion
09-27-2005, 11:32 PM
Well, I think you might be correct on the genealogical points, if you mean Durin VII...but not quite the dwarf I'm thinking of...it has something to do with his head armor

Spock
09-27-2005, 11:34 PM
well I think I'll make some hot chocolate and call it a night.....probably dream of dwarves :D

Curubethion
09-27-2005, 11:44 PM
All right, sounds good :D ...if someone gives the answer, feel free to PM me within 48 hours. In the event that I do not respond...well, you know what to do... :D

Rconsole
09-28-2005, 07:30 AM
Thrain II?, 4th cousin means his great great grandfathers cousin right?...and then 3 times removed means 3 people to the left?...nevermind...

Curubethion
09-28-2005, 07:27 PM
I think that's what I meant...but it's not Thrain II. Don't rely so much on that...just use that to get the general direction of relation. Remember my hints involving a pun...

brownjenkins
09-30-2005, 11:08 AM
thorin stonehelm?

Curubethion
10-02-2005, 06:41 PM
thorin stonehelm?
You got it...it's actually Thorin III, Stonehelm, but I'll let it pass...
Sorry for the confusing terminology...that's why I used the pun.

Lotesse
10-04-2005, 02:01 PM
brownjenkins? You around today? It's your turn! :)

brownjenkins
10-06-2005, 04:33 PM
doh... i missed this, hmmm gonna have to be a quick one off the top of my head... try to answer without looking up :)

about how much time (in terms of months) passed between the fellowship leaving rivendell and aragorn's coronation

Spock
10-06-2005, 08:20 PM
...good question....I have no idea. :(

Lotesse

doh... i missed this, hmmm gonna have to be a quick one off the top of my head... try to answer without looking up :)

about how much time (in terms of months) passed between the fellowship leaving rivendell and aragorn's coronation

Is this specified in the book?

Spock
10-06-2005, 08:29 PM
It may be figured out in the tables at the end but I'm too tired to look now. "L" you've got all that energy from serving java, go get 'em :D

Lotesse
10-06-2005, 09:27 PM
Four months and 6 or 7 days? These calenders always screw me up.

Valandil
10-07-2005, 01:45 AM
OK - I remember that the Fellowship left Rivendell on December 25. Aragorn and Arwen were wed the following Mid-year's Day (about July 1, by those ME calendars) - but he was already King then. I'll guess his coronation was May 1 - so it would be about 4 months and maybe 8 days - since all the months have 30 days and we'd have had 2 Yule days just after Dec 30. So Lotesse is right about there... if I'm correct on the May 1 coronation.

brownjenkins
10-07-2005, 01:06 PM
correct lotsy and val... i remembered the dates you mentioned val (more or less), so figured i'd ask for and "estimate"... which would be four months :)

you go lotesse

Lotesse
10-09-2005, 01:22 PM
The Appendix ones are always hard, both to guess correctly AND to write. Hmmm.

What were the two names the Eldar called the solar year - one way considered astronomically, and one way when the seasonal changes in vegetation were primarily considered?

Valandil
10-09-2005, 04:39 PM
I'll have to team up with somebody on this one... I think their term for the astronomical one was 'loa' - meaning 'sun-round' or something like that. I don't recall the seasonal one (except that they observed six seasons instead of four, didn't they?).

Spock
10-09-2005, 05:23 PM
OK, but either Lotesse or Val has to post the next question PLEASE. :)

Spock
10-11-2005, 01:00 PM
Lotesse
Val

Will you two please watch this thread and keep it going for a few days.
I've got to refine some dilithium crystals.

Lotesse
10-11-2005, 06:32 PM
Sure! :)

Val, you got the "loa" one right, now there's one more to get. It's specified in the Appendices. :)

Lotesse
10-20-2005, 03:03 PM
Say, Spock, do you mind taking this right now, and give these folks a new question? I gotta run right now; haven't got time to research a new question. Valandil, I am surprised you couldn't get this last question! :)

Spock
10-20-2005, 03:15 PM
Say, Spock, do you mind taking this right now, and give these folks a new question?

Thanx Spock - O.K., easy quickie -

Where did Aragorn go to lay down and die at, when his time came to pass away?

Valandil
10-24-2005, 05:33 AM
What was the name of that place... Rath Dinnen?

Finrod Felagund
10-24-2005, 05:36 AM
The Minas Tirith Houses of the Dead. And Merry and Pippin were laid beside him.

Spock
10-25-2005, 01:58 AM
I couldn't find "where" he was laid to rest, just that he was and the beds for M&P were placed next to him.

Spock
10-26-2005, 01:14 PM
HEY THERE, 72 hrs. and no response from our L.A. coffee maker; Lotesse, HELP :D

Lotesse
10-26-2005, 03:59 PM
Where did Aragorn go to lay down and die at, when his time came to pass away?

Finrod & Valandil were both incorrect - can we give this question another 24 hours for someone to answer? If you all would like a hint, it's in the Appendix A, I think (haven't got my book in front of me) the one where it's talking about Aragorn & Arwen. :) It isn't where he was laid to rest, it is where he WENT to lie down & give up the ghost, so to speak.

Spock
10-26-2005, 07:28 PM
Cerin Amroth, w/Arwen?

Lotesse
10-26-2005, 09:30 PM
O.K., this is the answer I sought - The House of the Kings in the Silent Street. I wanted it verbatim like that... ah, well, can't win 'em all.

Here's a new question:

To whom was given the first Ring of the Seven to be forged for the Dwarves?

Valandil
10-26-2005, 10:39 PM
I'll just guess that it was one of the Durins of the Forkbeards.

If I have to get specific, let me guess... Durin IV?

Lotesse
10-27-2005, 06:47 PM
Not Durin IV. Yep, it must be specific!

Telcontar_Dunedain
10-28-2005, 05:07 AM
Durin V?

Valandil
10-28-2005, 06:33 AM
I'll work the other way: Durin III?

Lotesse
10-28-2005, 04:32 PM
Valandil is correct. :)

Valandil
10-29-2005, 03:48 AM
OK - What was an unquiet never to be stilled in the hearts of the Exiles, but in the hearts of the Grey-Elves slumbered, but once awakened could not be appeased?

Spock
10-29-2005, 03:54 AM

Lotesse
10-29-2005, 08:15 PM

Valandil
10-30-2005, 09:27 AM
Correct - your turn Lotesse. :)

Spock
11-03-2005, 04:33 PM
Lotesse hasn't replied to PM's and hasn't stopped by to post a question, although on other parts of the board. How about we all PM her to swoop by?

Lotesse
11-03-2005, 08:29 PM
My bad, Spock - hey can you put the next question? I have no idea what question to make.

Spock

Valandil
11-07-2005, 08:04 AM
Lots of folks - but from the appendices, I'll guess it says he's descended from Valandil, the first Lord of Andune - who was the son of Silmarion, daughter and eldest child of King Tar-(Elendil?) - one of those early kings anyway. :p

Spock
11-07-2005, 11:30 AM

Gandalfthegray

Spock

In using the "appendix" which is what is used for this thread, I've a different answer, also in the book. I'm open to interpretation if you direct me to the exact spot it appears in your book....perhaps versions are different.

The index of names in the silmarillion second edition

Ahh, that's your problem. We're using ONLY the appendix for the Trilogy. The Silmarillion is a totally separate Topic (number four on the Main Page).

Sorry.

Spock
11-07-2005, 12:43 PM
Lots of folks - but from the appendices, I'll guess it says he's descended from Valandil, the first Lord of Andune - who was the son of Silmarion, daughter and eldest child of King Tar-(Elendil?) - one of those early kings anyway. :p

Actually Val, you got it but you just didn't distill the information above and arrive at the answer.

According to the appendix A, in my series: "Tar-Elendil, the fourth king, was succeeded by his son Tar-Meneldur, though his daughter Silmarien was the elder. It was, however, from Silmarien that Elendil was descended."

You go Val.

Valandil

Spock
11-10-2005, 07:40 AM
Who fought in chariots?

Ben Hur :D

Valandil
11-14-2005, 02:39 AM
Well... I couldn't find Ben Hur in the appendices, but as for THIS answer, the rest of their people also rode in horse-drawn wheeled apparatuses (or would that be apparati?).

Valandil
11-22-2005, 11:32 PM
Spock thinks I should post a new question since nobody has answered this. What - is it too hard? I thought for sure the hint I gave would have tipped some of you off.

I suspect it's more likely that the thread has just dropped out of sight, and 'out of mind'.

Anyone care to give this one a try? :)

Curubethion
11-26-2005, 12:27 AM
Well... I couldn't find Ben Hur in the appendices, but as for THIS answer, the rest of their people also rode in horse-drawn wheeled apparatuses (or would that be apparati?).
I'd have to guess Haradrim.

Valandil
11-26-2005, 07:00 AM
I'd have to guess Haradrim.

No - not the Haradrim. There was a particular name associated with these people from when they invaded (wherever they invaded, that is). :)

Valandil
11-26-2005, 09:58 PM
Regarding post # 94, question still not answered :(

Irrelevant. I had a post on the board and had not yielded the floor. Besides that, I had given a hint just 13 hours before you posted your question.

The question from Post #90 still stands.

The Numenoreans?

Valandil
11-27-2005, 08:09 PM
TD - not the Numenoreans

Spock - I'm sure 17 days has been done before - I just don't think so many people have been watching the thread lately. I use a "3-day rule" - but that's not for a question going unanswered. It's either for acknowledgement of an answer attempt, or asking a new question after a correct answer has been given. Apology accepted. :)

Spock
11-28-2005, 01:46 PM
It just isn't condusive to smooth operation to let it go that long, IMO.

Spock
12-02-2005, 01:48 PM
Well another FIVE days and **zip**. Has Val been kidnapped?

Valandil
12-03-2005, 01:04 AM
OK - I don't want to hold up THIS thread... I withdraw my question. I'll save it for later. I thought it was a nice one because it doesn't point you to a particular part of the appendices by itself. Sort of requires comprehensive knowledge.

So - I'll open the floor - Spock, you can re-post your question, or someone else can post another if you haven't done so yet when they find the thread.

Spock
12-03-2005, 12:33 PM
..ehhh? I don't remember my question......

OK, I'll try a new one. After King Earnil, how many more kings served?

Acalewia
12-12-2005, 05:19 PM
Funny. I'll reword it.
What year did Aragorn pass on?

Spock
12-14-2005, 12:46 PM
1541.

Acalewia
12-15-2005, 02:34 PM

hmmm, I'm referring with reference to Gondor and I'm not aware of those designations, so the answer would be...........?.............wrong ????

Acalewia
12-20-2005, 02:11 PM
God your picky :D I meant Earnil I or Earnil II

Spock
12-20-2005, 03:57 PM
Actually it is mentioned quite plainly in the Appendix. You may be referring to geneology and that can be a tricky area, however, that's not where the question comes from.

If no one gets it in another day or so, I'll toss the baton to someone else. :)

Lotesse
12-21-2005, 09:25 PM
How many kings followed Earnil?
Would it just be Aragorn? After Elendil died, wasn't it the House of Stewards who took over, while they waited for a king to re-materialise? I ask this at great risk of displaying possible ignorance on my LotR historical stuff, but oh well.

Spock
12-22-2005, 03:19 PM

You got it Lotesse. ;)

Lotesse
12-22-2005, 08:37 PM
Thanx, Spock! I was unsure. :)

O.K. - How old was Aragorn when he left Mordor & came to visit Galadriel in Lorien, and ran into Arwen there? How old was he then?

Spock
12-26-2005, 03:47 PM
Are you sure that's in there? The journey, yes, but his age ????

:D :D  OK, 49 yrs. old.

But as I'm leaving for a few days, I give it back to Lotesse (presuming I was correct) to please post a new question.

Lotesse
12-26-2005, 03:50 PM
Yeah, it's there! It's in the first sentence of the beginning of a paragraph - and that's all the clues you get! :)

12-26-2005, 05:15 PM
O.K. you guys, new question. It'll be easy for the Elf fanatics among us  :D

Who was Galadriel's brother who was once king of Nargothrond?

Gee, I finally find something and it goes from October to December, nothing listed in November and so I'm still looking. :(

Telcontar_Dunedain

You're on the right tracks Spock.

Spock

I suppose so. Your go Spock.

Spock

Gee, I got Sunday by reading: "Every year began on the first day of the week, Saturday...."

Sunday seems never to be the first day.

Valandil
02-14-2006, 08:36 AM
Correct - it's Sunday - although I was asking about the months. Two months each begin on all the other days of the week, but because of how the days not associated with months (or weekdays) fall, none of them ever hits a Sunday.

If you didn't pick up on it yet, those orderly little Hobbits have a calendar where every single date is always the same day of the week, every year. :)

Your turn Spock.

Out of courtesy to the querant, and because this is just the way we do the trivia process here, one must first await a go-ahead from the querant. Even if you know you are right, still you must wait. That is the way we have always done it. Just ask Spock.

Yes - generally so on these trivia threads. We skirt that sometimes with the Quote Game, but that's a whole different thing.

Gordis, correct. Next question is yours to ask.

Gordis
03-07-2006, 05:57 PM
That was not difficult. How about this one :)? :

What were the names of the great-grandsons of Castamir, who led the Corsairs of Umbar and slew King Minardil at Pelargir?

Udukhaturz
03-07-2006, 06:35 PM
Yes, Gordis, the question is difficult. Were they Angamaitë and Sangahyando?

Gordis
03-07-2006, 06:38 PM
Correct, Udu!

I love the names, pure Quenia, aren't they? Angamaite meand "iron-hand", but I have forgotten what the other one means.

Your turn, Udu! :)

Udukhaturz
03-07-2006, 06:52 PM
I looked the name elements up in a Quenya dictionary and I came up with "Sangwe - Poison" and "Hyando - Cleaver" for Sangahyando. I am not the best at translating Quenya, though.

Gordis
03-07-2006, 07:01 PM
I knew I read the translation somewhere, and I have found it, in the "Letters".

2. Q[uenya] names of Kings, etc. Q. was known to the learned in Gondor at least as well as Latin still is in W. Europe. [...] Angamaitë 'Iron-handed', and Sangahyando 'Throng-cleaver', were good Q. but no more so than the other names, and there was no need to assert their royal descent, as that was clear. They were, however, possibly 'aggressive' in being personal warrior names (or nicknames), whereas the other (few) warlike Q. names, like Rómendacil, were 'political': assumed by a king in celebration of victories against a public enemy.- Letter #347

So, your translation seems 50% right, Udu. :)

So, your next question.

Udukhaturz
03-07-2006, 07:06 PM
Gordis, so much for the online Quenya translator. *grins*

Here is an easy question and has probably been asked many times before.

Name the four heirlooms of the Kings that were kept at Rivendell.

Gordis
03-08-2006, 07:06 AM
Scepter of Annuminas, shards of Narsil, Elendilmir and...?

Perhaps the Ring of Barahir? Before Aragorn took it and gave to Arwen?

Udukhaturz
03-08-2006, 05:04 PM
Right, Gordis. Next question is yours.

Gordis
03-08-2006, 06:46 PM
Thanks, Udu.

Next question:
Where did the encounter between Earnur, the Witch-King and Glorfindel take place?

Udukhaturz
03-09-2006, 06:29 PM
To be exact, I guess, "...there was a great battle on the plain between Nenuial and the North Downs."

Gordis
03-09-2006, 11:55 PM
Sorry but no, Udu! :)

There was the battle of Fornost between Nenuial and the North Downs.

But the actual setting of the encounter and the prophesy was someplace else :p .

Udukhaturz
03-10-2006, 01:57 AM
Gordis, it is a little difficult to pinpoint an exact spot on this description. "Then the Witch-king, with all that he could gather from the wreck, fled northwards, seeking his own land of Angmar. Before he could gain the shelter of Carn Dum the cavalry of Gondor overtook him with Earnur riding at their head. At the same time a force under Glorfindel the Elf-lord came up out of Rivendell." Then comes the confrontation between the Witch-king and Earnur, then between the Witch-king and Glorfindel. I guess northeast of Fornost.

Gordis
03-10-2006, 05:35 AM
It is exactly this passage that I meant. :)

Interesting, I always understood it that the final destruction of the Angmarian army took place far from Fornost, somewhere in Angmar itself, just short of Carn Dum, or in North-Eastern Arthedain , near the border with Angmar.

Why? I guess that's because "Glorfindel the Elf-lord came up out of Rivendell". I thought it meant came North from the South, not North-West - and from Rivendell, North Downs are more to the West than to the North..

It seems that the cavalry of Earnur overtook the fleeing army, cutting them from Carn-Dum, and Glorfindel came from the South and the Angmarian army was crushed between the two.

Anyway Udu, you gave the correct answer and the next question is yours. :)

Udukhaturz
03-10-2006, 07:02 PM
Gordis, it is my impression, too, that the Angmarian army was destroyed within Angmar itself, but I could not say exactly where, just "somewhere northeast of Fornost." It is a big piece of territory.

Here is my question: Why did the horse Mansbane/Felaróf allow Eorl to ride him?

Gordis
03-11-2006, 10:40 AM
It killed his father, Leod.

Eorl said: "Felaróf I name you. You loved your freedom, and I do not blame you for that. But now you owe me a great weregild, and you shall surrender your freedom to me until your life's end."

Udukhaturz
03-11-2006, 05:27 PM
Correct, Gordis. The next question is yours.

Gordis
03-11-2006, 05:40 PM
Thanks, Udu.

Thee was once a young prince of Gondor, who didn't remain behind in Minas Tirith as he was ordered, but went to battle in disguise, much like Eowyn later did. He was slain, along with his father-the King- and elder brother. The crown passed to another line.

What was his name?

Valandil
03-11-2006, 05:50 PM

Valandil
03-15-2006, 08:02 AM
OK - I'll repeat one I asked a long, long time ago. This one is a bit more "comprehensive" - and not found at just one location in the appendices:

How many 'white trees' are associated with the Numenoreans / Dunedain? Give some information about each (ie, where it grew, who planted it and when, when it died and how, etc) - so we know you're not just guessing numbers. :)

Gordis
03-15-2006, 04:04 PM
OK, let us count these trees. :)
1. Telperion -

2. Galathilion in Tuna -

3. Celeborn in Tol Eressëa - The Elves brought a seedling to Armenelos early in the SA -

4. Nimloth in Numenor - burned by Sauron as a first offering in his new temple, while Isildur stole a fruit - and brought the seedling grown from it to ME

5. White Tree in Minas Ithil, planted before the house of Isildur - was burned when the city fell, in SA 3429, but Isildur saved a seedling of it.

6. White Tree in Minas Anor, planted by Isildur (TA2) before the Court of the Fountain in memory of his brother Anarion. This tree died in TA1636, during the Great Plague, when King Telemnar died.

7. Second White Tree in Minas Anor was replanted from a seedling by Tarondor, Telemnar's nephew, who succeeded him, TA1640. When the Steward Belecthor II died (TA 2852), the White Tree died also; but it was left standing 'until the King returns', for no seedling could be found.

8. The last White Tree of Minas Tirith has grown from a seedling found by Mithrandir and Aragorn in the snows of Mindolluin (June 25 3019).

Numbers 4-8 are associated wiith the Numenoreans/Dunedain. Actually, Tar-Palantir prophesied, saying that "when the Tree perished, then also would the line of the Kings come to its end."

Now, as a side note: isn't it curious that Mithrandir the Sly Manipulator :D has succeeded to find the seedling of the White Tree (so VERY PR-important thing for a new King with a questionable claim to the throne!) in the NICK OF TIME - right after the Coronation and before the marriage?

I suspect that the sly Wizard has smuggled the seedling right from Valinor, during his last visit there in February, and than made a great show of "finding" it  to give an additional trump to his protégé Aragorn. :D

How many days were there in an Elven week and what alterations did the Dunedain make in it?

Valandil
03-16-2006, 07:16 PM
The Elves had six - one each for the Stars, Sun, Moon, Trees, Heavens and Powers.

The Numenoreans / Dunedain added a day in honor of the Sea - which became Thursday. :)

Gordis
03-17-2006, 06:44 AM

Gordis

Oh, that was a difficult one. Entish Quenya!

Taurelilómëa-tumbalemorna Tumbaletaerëa Lómëanor, may be rendered 'Forestmanyshadowed-deepvalleyblack Deepvalleyforested Gloomyland', and by which Treebeard meant, more or less: 'there is a black shadow in the deep dales of the forest'.
