Gordis
03-24-2006, 05:01 PM
Come on, a simple question from Appendix A.
Who had the longest reign in the line of Anarion?
Nothing to calculate this time, it is stated plainly!

Serenoli
03-25-2006, 01:39 AM
Hyarmendacil! :)

I wish everyone would give such clues appended to their questions, for then I'd be much better at this game! :D

Gordis
03-25-2006, 01:30 PM
Sorry, Serenoli, not correct :( .
Hyarmendacil I (Ciryaher) reigned for 134 years, but there was another king (later!) who regned 162 years. Who?

Valandil
03-26-2006, 08:51 AM
I recall the occasion, but not 100% certain of the name - was it Telemnar?

Spock
03-26-2006, 09:56 AM
..... but there was another king (later!) who regned 162 years. Who?

...obviously you mean The Dr. :D

Gordis
03-26-2006, 10:12 AM
Right, Val. Your turn.

Valandil
03-27-2006, 03:55 AM
What did Fram send to the Dwarves - and what were they hoping for instead?

Gordis
03-27-2006, 11:37 AM
Fram sent them a necklace made of dragon's teeth, but they wanted Scatha's full hoard.

Valandil
03-28-2006, 04:14 AM
Right - and the necklace was made from the teeth of Scatha himself (or herself - but I've always thought Scatha was a male).

Your turn. :)

Gordis
03-28-2006, 08:24 AM
Right - and the necklace was made from the teeth of Scatha himself (or herself - but I've always thought Scatha was a male).

Your turn. :)

There should be some females, right? So it is 50:50! :D

For how long was Gandalf imprisoned in Orthanc?

Valandil
03-29-2006, 11:58 PM
Total guess here: I'm gonna say "two months"

Gordis
03-30-2006, 03:13 AM
Accurate enough for a guess. :) Actually, according to TY, from July 10 to September 18.

Your turn, Val!

Valandil

Cool your jets Spock - we're not closing any trivia threads for inactivity.

And sorry for the delay - forgot I was up.

Who were the first two kings recorded to be slain in the wars between Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur? And what was their relationship to one another?

Spock
04-12-2006, 10:59 AM
Back off jack! :(

how do you like it

Gordis
04-12-2006, 12:27 PM
Who were the first two kings recorded to be slain in the wars between Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhudaur? And what was their relationship to one another?

I would say Argeleb (1356) and his son Arveleg (1409). But weren't they slain in the wars with Angmar, not in the civil wars?

Valandil
04-12-2006, 09:14 PM
I would say Argeleb (1356) and his son Arveleg (1409). But weren't they slain in the wars with Angmar, not in the civil wars?

You're correct - on both counts actually. I noticed the Appendix B entry for 1356 - which only mentions Rhudaur. Remembering that the son also fell - I (incorrectly) extrapolated the rest. The Appendix A version says that Argeleb fell fighting both Rhudaur and Angmar - and that Arveleg died fighting the host of Angmar.

Your turn. :)

Gordis
04-13-2006, 04:35 AM
Thanks, Val. Perhaps in 1356 the men of Arthedain still believed they were only fighting with Rhudaur. :)

What land did the Eotheod come from, when they rode to the Field of Celebrant to help Gondor?

Spock
04-18-2006, 11:21 AM
Five days since the new question was posted. ANYONE guess or post a new question please?

Udukhaturz
04-18-2006, 01:54 PM
Guess off the top of my head - Rhovanion.

Gordis
04-18-2006, 04:40 PM
Sorry, but no, Udu! They moved from Rhovanion to dwell somewhere else before coming to Rohan...

Telcontar_Dunedain
04-18-2006, 04:58 PM
Near the sources of the Anduin.

Gordis
04-18-2006, 05:40 PM
You got it, TD! :)

Next question, please!

Telcontar_Dunedain
04-18-2006, 06:28 PM
Who was the first lord of Andunie?

Gordis
04-18-2006, 06:37 PM
Valandil? :D

Telcontar_Dunedain
04-18-2006, 06:44 PM
Correct, your go Gor!

Gordis
04-19-2006, 05:38 PM
Thanks, TD :D

What did Denethor's wife pine for?

Udukhaturz
04-20-2006, 03:50 PM
Dol Amroth?

Gordis
04-20-2006, 04:29 PM
Yes, and the sea :)
Your turn, Udu!

Udukhaturz
04-20-2006, 06:08 PM
Where is Karningul?

Gordis
04-20-2006, 06:24 PM
Where Imladris and Rivendell are :)

Udukhaturz
04-20-2006, 07:08 PM
Gordis, that was really a quick response! Your reward for responding so quickly is coming up with the next question. :)

Gordis
04-21-2006, 03:50 PM
What blood ties connected the Eorlingas with the Kings of Gondor?

Spock
04-25-2006, 08:48 AM
What blood ties connected the Eorlingas with the Kings of Gondor?

Gee, that's difficult to say.

Eorl was the first King of Rohan. The Eorlingas is another name for the Rohirrim. The Rohirrim considered themselves decendants of Eorl.

What that has to do with Gondor, is beyond my knowledge. :p

Gordis
04-25-2006, 01:06 PM
A little hint for you, then. :) ;)
Eorl lived around TA 2500.
Last King of Gondor went "missing" in TA 2050.
So whatever ties the Eorlingas claimed to have with the Kings of Gondor had to happen LONG BEFORE Eorl.

Spock
04-25-2006, 01:13 PM

The Eorlingas is another name for the Rohirrim. And so  I've not a clue.

Gordis
04-25-2006, 04:59 PM
The Eorlingas is another name for the Rohirrim.
I am not sure, but I believe the "Eorlingas" encompass not all of the Rohirrim, but only those of the Royal house - descendants of Eorl.

Valandil
04-26-2006, 10:02 PM
Eldacar, a future King of Gondor - wed Vidu(mava?) - the daughter of the self-styled "King of Rhovanion (Vidu... ga-something?) - probably in about the 1200's TA.

Eorl and his line consider themselves descendants of this King - and therefore, distant cousins to Gondor's Kings.

Gordis
04-27-2006, 02:53 AM
Correct, Val.

Vidugavia and Vidumavi, as far as I remember :)

Your turn!

Valandil
04-28-2006, 01:11 AM
Who claimed that Isildur had relinquished the realm of Gondor to Meneldil, son of Anarion, and his heirs?

Gordis
04-28-2006, 03:14 AM
Pelendur?

Valandil
04-28-2006, 07:07 AM
No - not Pelendur.

Gordis
04-28-2006, 08:58 AM
Then it was The Council of Gondor, led by Pelendur ;) :p

Valandil
04-28-2006, 09:04 AM
Correct - your turn

Gordis
04-28-2006, 02:47 PM
'jolly, gay' - in Westron please!

Udukhaturz
04-28-2006, 03:26 PM
Kalimac?

Gordis
04-28-2006, 03:51 PM
Yes. Your turn!

04-28-2006, 06:48 PM
What is the Elvish name of Azanulbizar?

Gordis
04-29-2006, 05:08 PM
Nanduhirion

Udukhaturz
04-29-2006, 07:04 PM
Gordis, correct. The next question is yours.

Gordis
04-29-2006, 07:11 PM
What do "hyarmen and formen" literally mean and why?

Udukhaturz
05-01-2006, 04:54 PM
"Hyarmen" and "formen" are the names of Quenya Tengwar letters "hy" and "f" and are used on maps for "south" and "north."

Gordis
05-01-2006, 05:28 PM
Hyarmen and formen mean Soputh and North indeed, but I don't think that they are names of Quenya Tengwar letters  .

I advise you to search a little further, Udu! ;)

Great new title, the Shadow Lord of Morgul! *bows*

Udukhaturz
05-01-2006, 06:56 PM
Gordis, for the answer I was going on this quote from page 401:

"The names of the letters most widely known and used were 17 n, 33 hy, 25 r, 9 f: númen, hyarmen, rómen, formen = west, south, east, north (cf. Sindarin Dûn or annûn, harad, rhûn or amrûn, forod). These letters commonly indicated the points W, S, E, N even in languages that used quite different terms. They were, in the West-lands, named in this order, beginning with and facing west: hyarmen and formen indeed meant left-hand region and right-hand region (the opposite to the arragement in many Mannish languages)."

Gordis
05-02-2006, 05:15 AM
I know, Udu.

Actually I was looking for this quote several pages further:

These letters commonly indicated the points W, S, E, N even in languages that used quite different terms. They were, in the Westlands, named in this order, beginning with and facing west; hyarmen and formen indeed meant left-hand region and right-hand region (the opposite to the arrangement in many Mannish languages).

Anyway, you ask the next question, Udu. One quote is as good as another :)

Udukhaturz
05-02-2006, 07:09 PM
*Chuckles good naturedly* I would have to go for the complicated answer. *Grins*

I have an easy, fun question. Where in the Appendixes is the word "outhouse" used?

Gordis
05-03-2006, 12:56 PM
Appendix E
"In Dwarvish, which did not possess the sounds represented above by th and ch(kh), th and kh are aspirates, that is t or k followed by an h, more or less as in backhand, outhouse." :D

Udukhaturz
05-03-2006, 08:37 PM
Gordis, you are correct. Ask the next question.

Gordis
05-04-2006, 05:26 PM
Whose was the mound in which the Ring-bearer was imprisoned?

Udukhaturz
05-04-2006, 06:50 PM
Probably the last prince of Cardolan

Gordis
05-05-2006, 03:23 AM
Corect, Udu. You go!

Udukhaturz
05-05-2006, 03:01 PM
What name did Tolkien say may have been better for the Dwarves?

Valandil
05-05-2006, 10:25 PM
Dwarrows?

Udukhaturz
05-05-2006, 10:43 PM
Val, you got it. The next question is yours.

Valandil
05-06-2006, 07:00 AM
One of the weekdays was named in honor of the stars. On which day of the week (first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh) did that fall - and what day was it?

Gordis
05-09-2006, 02:37 PM
First day of the week was named Elenya, in honor of the stars. :)

Valandil
05-09-2006, 07:28 PM
Maybe I should give it to you right there... but can you tell me what it's commonly called? :)

Gordis
05-10-2006, 09:16 AM
hmm... Monday? ;)

Valandil
05-10-2006, 08:03 PM
It wasn't Monday :( - but I see that 'winkie' - so you MUST've meant "Saturday" - right? :p Or "Sterrendie" / "Sterday" (oh - except looking those up - I see how he writes that their Saturday corresponds approximately to our Monday... etc)

Anyway - you take it from here, Gordie! :)

Gordis
05-11-2006, 03:22 AM
Honestly, I had no idea that Monday corresponded to Saturday

So you ask the next question! :p

Valandil
05-11-2006, 07:12 AM
Nah... g'head! And that correspondence had more to do with function - it was the day after the "High Day" - I think that's what he means.

I just asked - you ask now! :)

Gordis
05-11-2006, 04:14 PM
OK, OK!

What was he name of Helm's son?

Spock
05-11-2006, 09:43 PM
Helmet :D

Gordis
05-12-2006, 05:05 AM
Funny, you got very close. :D

Spock
05-12-2006, 10:53 AM
OK, OK!

What was he name of Helm's son?

I've no clue. I know that Frealaf was his sister-son but that's as far as my brain can go. :(

Gordis
05-12-2006, 02:07 PM
Then one has to take the book and let his eyes lead him further :) :p

Valandil
05-12-2006, 08:19 PM
Helmet :D

Funny, you got very close. :D

Hamlet?? :p

Gordis
05-13-2006, 03:39 AM

Spock
05-16-2006, 07:53 AM
Another 72 hours, three days, *3* have passed and no answer. :(

Gordis
05-16-2006, 08:13 AM
OK, Helm's son Haleth.

Now ask the next question who feels like it!

Spock
05-19-2006, 01:13 PM

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-24-2006, 05:15 PM

Yes he did. :p

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-25-2006, 03:00 PM
What happened just before Arwen laid herself to rest?

Spock
05-25-2006, 03:03 PM
she fluffed her pillow :D

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-25-2006, 03:19 PM
Close, but unfortunatley no! ;)

Acalewia
05-26-2006, 01:19 PM
Her husband died and her son took the throne?

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-26-2006, 01:21 PM
Nope.
HINT: This is said to have happened just before she died.

jammi567
05-26-2006, 01:41 PM
dwelt in Lorien until spring almost came?

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-26-2006, 02:10 PM
That's one part, you missed another.

Spock
05-26-2006, 03:05 PM
What happened just before Arwen laid herself to rest?

Well, after Aragorn passed away, she went and dwelt in Lorien and when the mallorn-leaves were falling she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-26-2006, 03:08 PM
I was looking for the part about the mallorn leaves so your go Spock.

Spock
05-27-2006, 11:17 AM
Who said and to whom (yes a two parter) :p

"This is our last parting, Estel......"

Indeed! Well done.

YUGO :D

jammi567
05-28-2006, 12:08 PM
who was the great, great, great, great, great grand uncle of Faramir I?

Valandil
05-28-2006, 11:21 PM
Brandobras "Bullroarer" Took??

jammi567
05-29-2006, 05:16 AM
yes, your go. :( (i thought it would last longer then this)

Valandil
05-29-2006, 07:58 AM
Sorry - and I didn't have the Took geneaology memorized or anything - but I remembered that Bullroarer wasn't a direct ancestor, but someone's uncle - so I thought I'd give it a shot, since he was so significant. FYI though - I don't think we use "grand" for an uncle... it's just "great-uncle" for a grandparent's brother and on back from there.

OK - here's one that previously lasted a long time, but maybe someone who's playing now can come up with it (it never got answered, so I'll try it again). No complaints about nobody answering it Spock... :D :p

Question:
Whose chieftains fought in chariots?

Spock
05-29-2006, 11:11 AM
Ben Hur! :D

Acalewia
05-29-2006, 08:03 PM
The Wainriders?

Valandil
05-29-2006, 09:19 PM
"Wainriders" is correct - your turn Acalewia! :)

Acalewia
05-30-2006, 03:52 PM
You posted that how many times? ;)

Who was Thorongil?

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-30-2006, 04:20 PM
Aragorn

Acalewia
05-30-2006, 06:08 PM
Yep. I thought that one might be a bit of a challenge. Guess not. Your go.

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-30-2006, 06:39 PM
What was the name of the leader who lead his people to Eotheod?

Valandil
05-31-2006, 08:03 AM
Well - I think the Eotheod was the people, and not a place, but you might mean "Frumgar"... :)

Telcontar_Dunedain
05-31-2006, 04:32 PM
I do indeed.

I thought Eotheod was the people aswell until I read this.

"Frumgar, they say, was the name of the chieften who led his people to Eotheod."

Valandil
06-02-2006, 07:38 AM
Oooo - you got me! Good one! :o :p

OK - How many years were there from the time that the Dunedain that remained in Rhudaur were slain or fled - and the time that the end came to the Dunedain of Cardolan?

Acalewia
06-05-2006, 02:57 PM
100?

Valandil
06-06-2006, 01:57 AM
More than 100. :)

Acalewia
06-08-2006, 01:10 PM
200?

Valandil
06-08-2006, 08:17 PM
A bit more...

Acalewia
06-10-2006, 10:22 AM
400?

Valandil
06-10-2006, 10:55 PM
A good deal less than 400 years.

Acalewia
06-11-2006, 03:14 PM
Ok then
250?

Valandil
06-11-2006, 03:36 PM
Less than 250 years... :)

225?

Valandil

A little more than 225 years...

Acalewia
06-11-2006, 07:19 PM
227?

I keep guessing I'm bound to get the answer, ya think?

Valandil
06-11-2006, 07:28 PM
227 it is! :D

The Dunedain of Rhudaur came to an end in 1409 - the same year that Angmar and Rhudaur launched a major offensive against Arthedain and Cardolan.

The Dunedain of Cardolan came to an end in 1636 - due to the Great Plague.

Your turn! :)

Question:

Who killed Thor and what was done to the body?

Valandil
06-11-2006, 08:15 PM
You mean "Thror"? ;)

jammi567
06-12-2006, 02:38 AM
Who killed Thor and what was done to the body?
Sauron and didn't he just through the body away?

Acalewia
06-12-2006, 01:07 PM
Nope, try again

Thror was decapitated by Azog as well as having runes branded on his face I believe.

Right, your go
and welcome to the Moot

slurktan
06-13-2006, 02:46 PM
Thank you for the welcome.

Besides Valandil, who is the longest reigning King of the Kingdoms-in-Exile?

Valandil
06-13-2006, 08:13 PM
Lessee... I know Araphor ruled Arthedain for 180 years - I don't recall if anyone in Gondor ruled longer (but I doubt it).

slurktan
06-14-2006, 02:20 AM
You are correct.

Valandil

About when... did the Fallohides and Stoors, first come into Eriador and the Angle or Dunland, respectively?

Spock
06-18-2006, 11:05 AM
 four days and zippo :(

Valandil
06-18-2006, 02:36 PM
That's not when they came, and that's not the rule.

Why don't you give a try?

Acalewia

I, we, all of us, will 'remind' others that there is an open question and try to keep the trivia going. It has always been so and shall continue to be. :(

Spock

WE HAVE NEVER LET A TOPIC GO TWELVE DAYS WITHOUT RESTATING A QUESTION, RETRACTING A QUESTION OR POSTING A NEW QUESTION.

So, let's post a new question, Val.

Sixteen Days-=new Question Please :( :*(

jammi567
07-04-2006, 02:05 PM
On what day does the book officially end?

Spock
07-04-2006, 05:10 PM
The day after Bilbo's birthday (he passed the Old Took) as they rode all day and evening before getting to the grey havens.

jammi567
07-04-2006, 07:20 PM
no, you are totally out.

Spock
07-05-2006, 09:16 AM
Well, the book is usually considered the story in any tome. Therefore my guess. The appendix, etc. are just reference and miscellaneous stuff and so shouldn't figure into the calculations.

jammi567
07-05-2006, 09:19 AM
no, i mean a day like, for example, feb 14. see what i mean. :)

Spock
07-17-2006, 10:04 AM
j-567, great question, stumpted us all. How about you do another???? Promise we'll all try harder. :D

jammi567
07-17-2006, 10:30 AM
Thanks. :D :). Wh was Faramir's great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandad, and was born in 1020?

Spock
07-17-2006, 10:40 AM
hmmm, I don't think the appendix lists people by the number of 'greats', etc. Perhaps you might reconsider re-wording this?

jammi567
07-17-2006, 10:43 AM
But if it did that, then the question would be too easy then.

Spock
07-17-2006, 10:50 AM
Well, if the question doesn't conform to the book; i.e. if the book (including appendix) doesn't list the answer in the form you posted the question, then the question isn't fair.

I suppose you can give it a couple of days and if no response, just think up a newer and more clear question. OK.?

jammi567
07-17-2006, 10:52 AM
I suppose you can give it a couple of days and if no response, just think up a newer and more clear question. OK.?
Aren't you going to have a go then.

Nah, not right now. Let's see if my prediction comes true.

slurktan
07-19-2006, 02:51 PM
Just to be clear....

The question is saying that there is 6 generations between Faramir and this fellow who was born in 1020 correct?

jammi567
07-19-2006, 03:12 PM
yeh...

slurktan
07-23-2006, 12:26 PM
My only guess would be Beregond and that would be by assuming the 1020 meant Shire Calendar, however I can't find anywhere in the Appendices where it mentions the year of Beregond's birth and I can't see him living to such a great age. If it's not him.... I'm going to have to say the question isn't valid as there is no way 6 generations of exiled Numenorean strain could last 2000 years and probably even not the 900 years between 1020 and the likely birthyear of Ondoher's second son.

jammi567
07-23-2006, 12:39 PM

Spock

Off the top of my head:

How did Elrond know Estel was in love with his daughter?

My initial problem with this is I do not remember a character by this name in the book. And if it wasn't mentioned in the context of your quesion then we need a new question.

Acalewia
07-28-2006, 01:23 PM
He refered to once being know by that name.
I'll rephrase:

How did Elrond know Aragorn was in love with his daughter?

Acalewia

Four days and I pass the torch. I'll save this question for another time.

New question

What is the name of Eomer' son?

Serenoli
09-11-2006, 05:34 AM
Eomer has a son!!! How come I never read it?

Oh, wait, this is Appendix Trivia... I probably could answer it if I looked it up. Am I allowed?

Acalewia
09-11-2006, 04:11 PM

Serenoli
09-12-2006, 02:20 PM
Sorry I confused you. I thought at first it was Two Towers trivia, and was bewildered that Eomer's son had just walked past without me noticing. In Appendix, though, its a highly different matter.

Anyway, his son was Elfwine the Fair.

Acalewia
09-13-2006, 10:39 AM
You got it! Your go, Serenoli

You didn't confuse me. That was because I didn't know if you were allowed to look up answers

Serenoli
09-14-2006, 08:46 AM
Oh, I see...

Well, here's a simple question. Who did Sam give the Red Book to before he sailed away from Middle-Earth?

jammi567
09-14-2006, 08:52 AM
His eldest daughter

Serenoli
09-14-2006, 09:03 AM
You're correct... but if you give her name you get a bonus point.

And, the ball's in your court now. :)

Spock

Elanor.

And, I'm not getting these posts until almost an 8 hr period later.

Now that i've got them in front of me: what does Nahald mean?

Spock
09-24-2006, 12:21 PM
Now that i've got them in front of me: what does Nahald mean?

NAHALD-is Mannish meaning "secret".

Deagol is a translation into Old English of the Northern Mannish name of Nahald.

That should clear it up for you. :D

jammi567
09-25-2006, 05:20 AM

... If members aren't interested in it or are busy with school, etc. I'm not going to force the topic to move. :(

Agreed. I really think that's the best way to handle the trivia threads... let them rise and fall naturally, and let people play as they please.

After all, this is the "LOTR Books Forum" - not the "LOTR Books Trivia Forum". There's a lot else here, and the trivia threads should not get any special treatment.

I will submit some ideas for our trivia threads along these lines to SGH and see what she thinks, then work up some new guidelines and post them shortly.

jammi567
