"From the green /_o_n_/ she came. Is that a sign,
and how shall I read it?"

Rían
11-17-2005, 10:41 AM
correct so far :)

littleadanel
11-17-2005, 12:02 PM
"mound" ?

And the speaker... oh, I remember, Túrin! When he finds Nienor. ;)

(Oh my, I feel so bad giving the last part after Val gave all the words but one. :o )

Rían
11-17-2005, 01:02 PM
correct, and correct!

(and don't worry - we all do that sometimes! I'm sure Val won't mind because he just did the last quote :) )

It's your go, littleadanel :)

littleadanel
11-17-2005, 04:32 PM
'right... :o

"B_/t_e/_a_/t_a_/y_u/_a_e/_o_/h_v_/l_a_e/_o/_e_a_t,/

Rían
11-17-2005, 05:20 PM
By the ? that you gave ? have leave to ?
if Thorondor is willing. I grieve at this parting;

eh, not a terrific start...

littleadanel
11-17-2005, 05:52 PM
All correct, save "gave".

"By the /_a_/ that you /_a_e/_o_/ have leave to /_e_a_t,/
if/Thorondor is willing. I grieve at this parting;/
_e_/i_/a/_i_t_e/_h_l_,/a_/t_e/_l_a_/a_c_u_t/_t,/
_e/_a_/m_e_/a_a_n."

So far. 'Night all; around 11pm here. I'll check your guesses tomorrow ;)

Rían
11-17-2005, 08:40 PM
last bit - "... in a little while, as the Eldar account it, we may meet again" ?

and last word, first line - depart?

littleadanel
11-18-2005, 03:06 AM
All correct, R*an :)

Ha, hrm, hm, let me see...

"By the /_a_/ that you /_a_e/_o_/ have leave to depart,
if Thorondor is willing. I grieve at this parting;
_e_/ in a little while, as the Eldar account it,
we may meet again."

Almost completed... all we need is 4 words and a speaker ;)

Earniel
11-18-2005, 06:38 AM
'have' and 'yet'?

littleadanel
11-18-2005, 09:17 AM
Editing post: well, um, sorry for misleading, "yet" is correct but "have" is not. :o :)

Rían
11-18-2005, 01:07 PM
I think you might be missing a word  or perhaps "have" is "came"?

"By the way that you came you have leave to depart"? or
"By the way that you have come you have leave to depart"?

speaker is Turgon, I imagine ...

littleadanel
11-18-2005, 02:48 PM
You're right, R*an... Eärniel's "have" wasn't correct, this line of yours "By the way that you came you have leave to depart" is the correct one. (Aww, I knew I would mess it up if I don't make a summary after each guess. :o )

Anyway, speaker is correct too, so it's your turn :) :o ;)

Rían
11-18-2005, 03:01 PM
Oh, don't worry :) Non-native English speakers get extra grace!

"I/_e_r/_o_/t_a_/t_o_/w_u_d_t/_a_t_r/_i_h/_e./_h_t/i_/t_y/_r_c_?/"

littleadanel
11-18-2005, 03:25 PM
Non-native English speakers get extra grace!

:D

And a non-native, but attending English faculty at uni? :p
But this I-can-only-see-every-second-letter thing is hard for me. I really needed to concentrate to keep track of things :p

And to stay on topic, lemme start guessing...

... that thou wouldn't ? with me ...

Rían
11-18-2005, 03:33 PM
All but "wouldn't" are correct. :)

"I/_e_r/_o_/that/thou/w_u_d_t/_a_t_r/with/me./_h_t/i_/t_y/_r_c_?/"

littleadanel
11-18-2005, 04:23 PM
If not "wouldn't" (and obviously not - no apostrophe  *smacks forehead*) then maybe "wouldst" ? And second sentence - "What is thy..." ?

Rían
11-18-2005, 05:17 PM
Yes to all!

"I/_e_r/_o_/that/thou/wouldst/_a_t_r/with/me./What/is/thy/_r_c_?/"

Midge
11-18-2005, 06:49 PM
Is the second word "fear", maybe?

Rían
11-18-2005, 08:56 PM
almost ... but not quite ...

And welcome to Entmoot, Midge :) This is a fun game!

Valandil
11-18-2005, 11:15 PM
'hear too'?
'barter'?
'price'?

Can't place it.

Rían
11-18-2005, 11:21 PM
All but "too" correct :)

"I/hear/_o_/that/thou/wouldst/barter/with/me./What/is/thy/price?/"

Serenoli
11-19-2005, 03:43 AM
'now'?

Valandil
11-19-2005, 08:57 AM
Is it Feanor?

Rían
11-19-2005, 01:24 PM
"now" is correct; Mr. Hot Temper is not :)

Serenoli
11-20-2005, 12:18 AM
So, do I post now, or wait till the speaker is identified? Personally, I haven't the foggiest idea who it could be...

Rían
11-20-2005, 12:25 AM
well, I'm afraid the speaker needs to be identified ...

I'll give some hints, though -

1. what kinds of beings tend to speak in the old-fashioned "thee/thou" speech? (think opening of the Sil...)

2. Feanor has spoken with this being before ... and he's not a nice being, either ...

Serenoli
11-20-2005, 12:40 AM
Melkor, perhaps?

Rían
11-20-2005, 03:05 AM
Yes - making a deal with - oh, rats, don't have my Sil with me - was it Gwindor? Whose wife was killed but he didn't know, and Morgoth said he'd reunite Gwindor with her, which means he'll get killed. Moral - don't deal with Morgoth!

Your go :)

Radagast The Brown
11-20-2005, 01:43 PM
Eh, Rian, are you talking about Sauron and Gorlim? :)

Rían
11-20-2005, 06:59 PM
whoops, my bad - sorry, that's right, Rad! :o

Well, Ainu-type baddie and guy with a name starting with G! They're all the same! :D

*goes in search of her brain*

Rían
11-21-2005, 07:21 PM
Oh, I don't know who should go now - I meant Sauron but got mixed up with Morgoth (I've been reading First Age stuff lately) - so either one of you guys go :) - whoever gets here first, Rad or Serenoli :)

Serenoli
11-22-2005, 08:24 AM
All correct Valandil and Earniel, except: No, good.

Speaker not Balin, but, of course a dwarf. Corrected version:

"I hope I never smell the smell of apples again! My tub was full of it. /_o/ smell /a_p_e_/ everlastingly when you can scarcely move and are /_o_d/ and sick with hunger is maddening. I could eat anything in the wide world now, /_o_/h_u_s/_n/_n_/- but not an apple!"

Here's what we have so far:

"If you /_a_l,/ other things will find you first. But I know

remain there, there I will find you, if I can. For I am

Serenoli

"Beware! Small love has the proud son of M*riel ever had for the children
of Indis. Now he has /_e_o_e/_r_a_/,/and he has his father in his hand.
It will not be long before he drives you forth from Túna!"

Speaker not Ulmo. Hint: The speaker does not tell the words directly to his hearers, it goes rather indirectly. Identify the person who first said them, because the names of the people who reported what he/she said are unknown.

I made a comment about it, but that was when Entmoot was acting up and I think it got lost

Despair, or folly? It is not despair, not despair as only you those who
see the end beyond all doubt. We do not. Is it wisdom to recognise
necessity, when all other courses have been weighed, though as folly it may
appear to those who cling to false hope. Well, let folly be our cloak, a veil
before the eyes of the enemy! For he is very wise, and weighs
all things to a nicety in the scales of his malice. But the only measure
that he knows is desire, desire for power; and so he judges all hearts.

Reading the whole thing again... I suppose it should be 'It is wisdom' not 'Is it wisdom'.

Easier, for me anyway, than anything involving 12-letter names from the Sil ;). That would certainly have had me stumped!

I was thinking that "whack" sounded very un-Tolkienesque :p

I'll have a quote up shortly :)

Yet all the Elves are willing to endure this chance, if by it the /_o_e_ / of Sauron may be broken, and the fear of his dominion be taken away for ever.

It sounds kind of funny, but could it be "the bowel of Sauron"?
Or the "tower of Sauron"?

Speaker is Elrond?

Rían
12-20-2005, 07:16 PM
NO, it's definitely not "bowel" :D and it's not "tower", but "tower" is VERY close...

It's not perceiving...sorry - the word was right in my original post, and in my edit of my answer to your post (does that make sense? ). But when I first replied to your post I left in the c you'd put there when you tried perceiving.

And everything else is right except "may"...

Um, in short:

"In which no doubt you will see our good fortune and our hope.
