Well... not hating him doesn't mean I actually like him. :p

I actually quite like Feanor. I have a great deal of respect for him both as an artist and a father. Raising seven sons is no mean feat, and considering how quick they were to swear that pesky oath along with him, they must have loved him a lot which points to his having been a good father.
He made a mistake in swearing that oath, but on the other hand, his father had just been murdered and his greatest works of art stolen. Personally, I'm rather attached to both my dad and the stuff I create, if I were in Feanor's place I'd probably be lashing out at everyone around me and swearing foolhardy oaths too.

He made his sons swear on oath that ruined all of their lives! He led them to their dooms.

He didn't make them do anything. He may have asked that they do it with a great deal of persuasive passion, but they were all seven of them full grown adults with free will.

I remember this thread!
I guess now is the time to confess that I have to come to a point where I empathize with Fëanor, and I blame Finwë for everything.
But, I'm not a Fëanor fangirl, and don't intend to be one at any point in time.

Quite a few times now, I've found myself in situations where I swear I react like Fëanor would have. It kind of killed my hatred for the guy.
And yes. I blame Finwë now also; especially for following Fëanor to Formenos, when his other sons and his entire people needed him as well.

Hence, my empathy. I am way too prideful myself to say I wouldn't react the same way.
Yeah, Formenos...

Yeah, Formenos...
Too prideful, and too impetuous. And part of his insanity I can understand when you look at the Shibboleth version in which he accidentally burnt his own son with the ships.
Still... I still can't forgive him for that dying wish... he knew it was hopeless and forced his sons to carry on anyway. Who can say no to a dying father? :(

WITHOUT FEANOR WE WOULDNT HAVE LOTR, THE SIL OR THE HOBBIT!
PRAISED BE TO FEANOR!
And thus I have spoken.

Indeed! Hear, hear.
I blame Feanor for getting me interested in the Silmarillion.
