For Luthien, Liv Tyler; if not her, Catherine Zeta-Jones. For Beren, Mel Gibson.

Discussion will be in the other thread, this is for the list, or feedback on my choices so far,

I think Catherine Zeta Jones is hot, but too old for Luthien.

Arien the Maia

for Feanaro, I would pick Joaquin Phoenix
and I think that Angelina Jolie would be a good NErdanel although she's not on the list..at the very least she would make a good Noldor elf

Valandil

How 'bout Arnold as Hurin?

Nicholas Cage for Caranthir?

Sheesh - what a long list though! Shows again how difficult it would be to make this into a movie. You just KNOW the Hollywood folks would insist on combining characters, etc - so a movie audience could follow along. :(

Valandil

And I don't see Finduilas - maybe Heather Graham? Gwyneth Paltrow?

And should First Age Galadriel be someone a bit more... Amazonian? (EDIT: and then could Cate Blanchett be acceptable as a First Age Melian - having played Third Age Galadriel?)

Finrod Felagund

I propose to make it a minseries, with narration on the sketchy bits.

i agree, Feanor has to be extremely handsome, yet both fiery and dark and brooding and noble.

Damn hard to cast!

I dont know if anyone finds him handsome, but the dude from Dark City, uh...I dont remember his name, but he was also in that Jousting movie with Heath Ledger. He seems to have the right build, not too big, but not small, and he is very dark and brooding. I just dont know about beautiful...

How could you not have Colin Farrel as Beren?

I can imagine Johnny Depp as Fëanor, and then I'd cast myself as Nerdanel.

Finrod Felagund
11-06-2003, 12:14 PM
Got Johnny Depp, Joaquin Pheonix just isn't handsome enough.
Changed Galadriel to Kim Basinger and Melian to Michelle Pfeiffer. Miranda Otto I think ius the obvious Nienor.

Turin and Thingol= really hard to cast. Oh yeah, Sean Connery as Ulmo! How did we not think of that?!?

My dad helped me come up with some of my ideas.

Mim the Petty Dwarf---Danny DeVito

Finrod Felagund

i agree.

Joaquin Pheonix for Maehdros, and Orlando Bloom for his lil bro, Celegorm "the fair"

She's too pretty to play Nerdanel. Nerdanel was relatively plain (by Elf standards). I'm sure there's a place for her somewhere, though. Even if it is as a Noldor extra.... :)

I think Joaquin would make a great Maedhros. Miranda Otto would work well for Nienor, too.

Danny DeVito as Mim... that cracks me up.

Not sure about Johnny Depp as Feanor. He's one of my favorite actors, but I'm not sure he has the right... erm... presence for the part. He generally plays the likeable-though-ill-adjusted good guy. Not the alluring maniac.

Jonny Dep would make a good Tuor, just because he could play the crazy situations he gets into well.

But I think...his look, at the least, is very close to a Feanor, he can play Noble and Dark and fiery all at once....That really wasn't coherent...oh well...

If I ever got the chance to make a Tolkien film all my elves would be played by very aesthetic, fine and angular featured actors and actresses. Then this look would be further perfected by CGI somehow. For me the elves in the PJ films just didn't cut it. Cate Blanchet is attractive, yes, but in a very human way. The same goes for Angelina Jolie and many of the other actresses some of you here have suggested for Elfish roles.

If he was younger I think (looks-wise) Daniel Bernhardt would make a great Turin. Turin put most Noldor Lords to shame, if memory serves, and Daniel Bernhardt is very good looking, again in a very human way. He's just too 'manly' to play any of the elves, if you know what I mean. If you don’t know who he is, he played Sirro in the Mortal Kombat tv series, and he was one of the agents in the 2nd Matrix movie (I think he’s the one who fought a lot with Morphius in the free-way scene).

For Feanor I'd have to cast an unknown as I can't think of anyone who could pull it off. He'd need Christian Bale's 'style' and a look akin to Colin Farrel...

The fact that it ends in -las should give a hint though. ;) It would be hard to come up with a cast list without [m]any known actors, mostly because there's so many strong characters and we'd need strong actors to play them (and those often happen to be the most known)

Good idea, Arty, Jude Law has a Fingon-ish look, too.

Oh, and I think the guy I was talking about was Daniel Day-Lewis. They're both dark-haired, intense-looking, high-cheekboned type guys.

Ya let's get some brits in there!! I'm Canadian and this cast looks way to Americanized... which in the end will just make it more expensive...

Some suggestions and others can put them into places:

Anthony Hopkins

Clive Owen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0654110/)

Ioan Gruffudd (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0344435/)

Keira Knightley (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0461136/)

Rupert Everett (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000391/)

Izabella Scorupco (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001713/)

Christian Bale (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000288/)
Bale is freakin perfect for Feanor as some have allready mentioned, and he's gonna be Batman this year!!! Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors and can easily play any role... but Bale is just too Feanor after watching American Psycho it just seems to fit so nicely.

Matthew McConaughy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000190/)

Diane Kruger (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1208167/)

Eric Bana (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0051509/)

Adoni Maropis (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0549539/)

Connie Nielsen (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001567/)

Kate Winslett (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000701/)

Ewan McGregor as Maglor...

Rupert Everett as Saeros.

Luthien is a hard role to cast... I'd say someone like Diane Kruger, probably with her hair brown or black.

Personally I think Catherine Zeta-Jones would be a good choice for Luthien. Remember, any actress playing Luthien would need to be able to sing and dance as well as look pretty while playing a strong-willed elf woman.

Also, is it just me or is Brad Pitt just a tad too human for Finrod?

It's his cheekbones and the jawline, they're squared and rounded at the same time and it doesn't look right, which is a pity, finding good actors that look good with fair hair is going to be a bit of a problem in casting this.

revision from watching Rob Roy, Liam Neeson could quite easily be Turgon, whilst Tim Roth could be Feanor
I would like to see John Cleese as Thingol (if he could do it in a serious way:p), he is certainly tall enough (over 6 ft at 12 years old  )
Peter O'Toole as the old Hurin would be good
Yul Brynner as Eol would work
Ewan MacGregor as Maeglin..?

John Cleese as Thingol... *snerk* That's not a bad idea. It appeals to my sense of humor anyway. Of course I'm sure he could do it seriously, but some mental images just won't be quiet.

What about Cary Elwes as Fingon? (The Princess Bride, Robin Hood Men In Tights)

I think we could find an Elvish role for Robin Wright Penn (Princess Bride).

What? Some very good-looking actors and actresses were employed in The Princess Bride.

Here is a thread devoted to Silmarillion Casting ideas.

1. Gerard Butler (Turin Taramber). For anyone who saw him in Timeline he has the look and the acting ability to pull this role off. Turin is always portrayed with really dark hair and with a temper....so what better than an angry Scotsman to play the role. ;)

2. John Noble (Hurin). Well think about it. The guy has the right look...and about ten years from now would be the right age to be Gerard (Turin's) dad.

3. Adrien Brody (either Fingolfin, Finarfin, Fingon). This one could be amazing...he is the most elvish looking actors I've EVER seen, not to mention his is an Oscar Winner and has the talent to play one of the good less tempestuous elves (in my opinion he would not be a good Feanor)

Well these are the choices I have for now....Of course if I were making films of the Sil I would at the very LEAST audition all these people. In my opinion Butler and Brody would have decent shots at actually being cast.

What do you all think? I like to think creative when casting (not just randomly pick the entertainment business most high wattage stars). All these actors are know or up and comming, however I would probably look for a lot of unknowns in theater companies around the world. The reason these three film actors are being considered is their resemblance and acting caliber for the parts.

Okay....enough of my essay. ;)

Well...time for the next generation thread I guess ;)I'd actually suggest to simple continue the other thread... since there's no point to have two similar threads. :p and it's not that old, really. Think it's the second page.

Jeff Goldblum!!!! Holy Toledo! :p

Oh, it's been a while since I read it, but... I'd definitely see Russell Crowe in Beren. I think... who was that lady in Gladiator?... Connie Nelson! would play a good Galadriel. Maybe Claire Danes as Niniel (she was in the silly, right? It's been a while). Summer Glau as Luthien. ?

Sean Connery as Ulmo is perfect, as for Feanor? with some thought, Jonny Depp works well. And Nicolas Cage as Sauron works for me too. Liam Neeson as Fingolfin I like, and Ian McCellan as Finwe, or an older Hugo Weaving

ok, Clive Owen from the king aurthur movie is Feanor, no doubt. and patrick stewart as Finwe. this is going to be on my mind for a while

Beren: Ewan McGregor
Luthien: Diane Kruger
Morwen: Jodie Foster
Feanor: Johnny Depp
Turin: Colin Ferral
Hurin: Liam Neeson
Thingol: Jeremy Irons
Gwindor: David Thewlis
Nienor: Scarlet Johansson

just some ideas, of course though it should be mostly lesser known actors that should be used, but as they are lesser known, i dont know them. also i dont think anyone from the lotr movies should be used except for people like galadriel who could be played by the same actors

Yay for Depp as Fëanor! :) :D

As for Jeremy Irons, I'm a huge fan of him. But somehow I can't imagine him as Thingol.

Feanor's my fantasy Elf, so I feel personally obligated to interject my own ideas re: casting his role - I HATE Clive Owen, Christian Bale doesn't have the feeling of true artistic depth for me nor does he come across as very emotionally interesting; Jeff Goldblum - - ARE YOU KIDDING??!?!
Absolutely, absolutely Johnny Depp. His range is astounding, he's one of the few dramatic artists out there nowadays who naturally possesses true depth and variance, who is endlessly interesting and unpredictable, who is endowed with the right look in every way, etcetera ad nauseum.

Feanor MUST be given to Johnny Depp.

and, Nurvingiel - I agree - Cary Elwes is a good idea to play Fingon.

Do you have to read LOTR Trilogy to read the Silmarilion?

Lotesse

Answer to above enormous question: No.
In fact, theoretically no one "has" to do anything that they don't want to do. One's experience of the whole middle-earth scenario might be nicely enhanced, though, by reading the Sil first, then proceeding to Lord of the Rings, just because of the historically chronological aspect of it. But do whatever floats your boat. :)

This is Final Cast List, so...

for Nienna, I'd cast Isabelle Adjani.

for Melian, Diane Lane.

Feanor's my fantasy Elf, so I feel personally obligated to interject my own ideas re: casting his role - I HATE Clive Owen, Christian Bale doesn't have the feeling of true artistic depth for me nor does he come across as very emotionally interestingI reckon Bale would be ideal. Not taking anything away from Depp, but there's something about Bale that suggests to me that he'd totally pwn Feanor's stubbornness. And any fight scene.

And:

Would you really want to blame every little thing on Johnny Depp? Shame on you.

There are those who don't blame every little, or big, thing on Fëanor, you know. :)

If Bale were to do Fëanor I would only see Patrick Bateman.

Why not use tv-actors or unknown upstarts from Shakespear theatercompany's?

I think the Silmarillion would make a very bad movie, even as a trilogy! But as a tv-series it'll be the gargantuan tv-showhit!!! If you could snatch a good director and producers for it.

Has anyone mentioned Jennifer Connelly for Luthien? I think she is the only actress who can play her part to the extreme. She has class, beauty, a little bit sorrow in her eyes, and also she is a right age (actress like Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley or Emma Rossum are extremely hot and may prove to be good choice in the future, but they are simply too young now).

I think Russell Crowe may be a candidate for Beren, but then it will be too similar to [Beautiful Mind] in which he starred with Jennifer Connelly. Plus, Russell may be just too old to be Beren. Eric Bana from [Troy] is what I think my ideal actor for Beren, though James Caviezel from the [Count of Monte Cristo] would do a good job too I guess.

Joaquin Pheonix ain't handsome enough for Maedhros I think, cause I would imagine Maedhros to be quite handsome elf prince. Patrick Wilson from [The Phantom of the Opera] would be a good choice. He is quite handsome yet carrying a bit of tragic in his eyes, as he would portray a character like Maedhros who has a kind heart yet bound tragically to an evil oath very well.

Finrod is a very interesting choice. I think David Wenham who played Faramir in [Lord of the Ring] movies is a great choice, yet since all these stories are related it is logical to avoid using the same actors/actresses as different roles. I would say Ioan Gruffudd who played Lancelot in [King Arthur] is a good choice.

I would say the best choice for Turin is Keanu Reeves, though he probably won't get everything out of this character because he ain't an extremely good actor in terms of acting skills. Colin Farrell will do a good job with Tuor, but he probably needs to up his acting skill too. But Tuor is a much easier person to act than Turin, cause his individual characteristic ain't as strong.
