Well, since it was an Entmooter who originally introduced to to NaNoWriMo in the first place, I thought some of you might also be participating in the madness. NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is November, and the goal is to write 50,000 words by November 30. It's great fun . . . but we'll see if I still say that on Nov. 15. :)
Visit nanowrimo.org for more info.
So, is anyone with me?

I would be if i didn't find out just like now! not enough time, i can write 2000 words in two hours but 50, 000 would *gets out calculator* take me.....50 hours, two days and them some! Eepp not enough time!

Is there one for December? Is there a certian topic, are all of them 50, 000 words? Can you work in partners? Do you have to start in that month or can you start earlier?

Question: Luis has the same number of quarters, dimes, and nickels. In all he has 4$ in change. How many of each coin does Luis have?
Answer: None. George snuck up behind him, beaned him over the head with an 8-pound mathbook, stole all his money and bought ice cream. George now has 15 cents left (a dime and a nickel) and poor Luis has $-60 in an emergency room bill. Luis' lawyer, however, has a large amount of money. But not change.

In answer to your lovely riddle that i happened to read.... Luis HAD 10 of each coin .25 * 10 = 2.5 + 1.0 (10 dimes) + .5 (10 nickels) = $4! heeehee. What are you going to charge him with..you can't charge him for negligance or manslaughter or even murder, i know there is a charge but if George is under 18 he can only be held partialy responsible, if he's under the age of 12, you can't charge him at all, even if there was intent! And usualy in a civil court case you wouldn't have a lawyer you usaully only have a lawyer for a criminal charge in which George would have already been charged for his criminal act and it just goes on and on and on..

Excuse me, but- what on earth? What does that have to do with NaNoWriMo?

I tried to write a novel. I really did. But I threw it in the (metaphorical) fire at 5000 words. Gyah. It was really bad.

1.) No, it's just in November.

2.) No certain topic. 50,000 words is the goal, but not compulsory.

3.) Yes, if you want. There aren't really any rules on the how-the-writing happens side.

4.) Yes, you have to start at the beginning of November and end on November 30th.

I know too many people who haven't slept for the past three weeks. My friend Jacob was in our fall play (with production week all last, and the thing going up yesterday) with night practice all week, and still manages to pump out 12,500 words a week. It's scary.

Wow, kudos to him! I'm impressed. I have no social life and have been writing approximately 20,000 words per week, but I could never survive this witha commitment like a play.

Elvishfaerie, LeniFreak has happily answered your questions.
By the way, thank you for doing my math homework for me. Too bad it was from a year ago and more of a statement on the weight of our mathbooks than anything else. You may go into law if you wish, but I'll stick to poetry and novelling. Enjoy poking holes in other peoples' logic. You sure are good at it.

*I hope that didn't come off too sarcastic . . . :D*

I'd like to know how our Moot Wrimos did. Did you get there Laurelyn?

Laurelyn
12-07-2003, 07:18 PM
Yes, I did indeed. I hit 50k and then some, and i"m now feeling a little exhausted.
Unfortunately, my first draft isn't done. I completed my 100,031th word this afternoon (Dec 7th), and I am well aware that about 100,031 of those words are rubbish, but I'm determined to finish my first draft so that I have a finished draft to edit down to something sensible. *sigh* It's starting to feel like I'm pulling teeth, though. Without the "It doesn't matter how bad it is, just write," attitude of NaNoWriMo backing me up, my December noveling is becoming harder and harder. I've almost completely given up Entmoot time, which hurts quite a lot. I miss the 'Moot. But I have to get this finished . . . .
Wish me luck if you feel like it. :)

Well, with November imminent I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

I didn't even try last year, but this year I'm doing it. I've got my plot pretty well planned out, and I think I'm staying up all Halloween night to get started. Heh.

Who else is trying?

I"ve become a bit of an isolationist lately here at school, and spend a good amount of my time doing stupid things like playing dumb online games.

I'm in...maybe I can actually start writing again.

Was it hard to do? (It would probably explain why we saw little of you. ;))

Elf Girl
12-03-2004, 07:04 PM
Eh, not as hard as I'd thought. I really haven't written much, my style is short and sweet, but edit it to death. This was completely different than I normally do, and I expected it to be more difficult.

*bumpidy*

I saw Nerdy mention it in the happy thread and thought it'd be nice to bump this thread.

So, is anyone planning on participating this year? Any ideas on what you're going to start?

I have thought about it but 50 000 words is kinda steep so I'm thinking I'd work out my own terms.

I want to do it, but I can't because I have the novel I am writing and 2 others floating around my mind...must get one of them fully out.

So instead my target is to finish novel 1 by the end of November. It's at approx 75,000 words already, and has 5 chapters to go. It is do-able. If only I wasn't working 2 jobs as well...

Noone posted in this thread last year, but as I have just joined up for another year at NaNoWriMo, I decided to bump it for 2008 :)

I've only participated twice, writing less than 8000 words in 2004 (failing miserably ;) ), and then winning (with 51 000 words) in 2007 :)

The NaNoWriMo site (http://www.nanowrimo.org/) has got a forum where people can discuss things and encourage each other - at the moment some are offering calendar wallpapers with the daily word count goal, to make it easier for us to follow our word count requirements.

I thought I would link to one of them - here (http://i363.photobucket.com/albums/oo79/ScaryMaryNease/desktop2.jpg) - (for Twilight lovers especially ;) ).

I think I might do my NaNoWriMo 'light' version again: pick one of the short stories I'm working on and type the full first draft in one month. That'll be challenging enough for me. I'm not up to novel-length anyway.

Then you can join the Rebel forum at NaNoWriMo as well - I'll be a Rebel this year and work on an old story (my NaNoWriMo 2007 one) rather than writing something new.
I won't qualify as a winner, but I'm welcome to use the fora and participate as an ordinary participant. Lots of the Rebels are writing other things than novels.

Cute - yes, isn't it? And apparently it was the big boss himself over there who decided that his rebels ought to have their own forum to discuss their rebellions in :D

I think it's quite decent of him to allow us to be as much part of the NaNo writing community as those who play strictly by the rules. He admits that some of the rules are arbitrary anyway - so he allows that, rather than changing the rules :D

I was all fired up to participate, but I don't think it's gonna happen now. I might give it a shot, because I have a story already outlined and ready to write (I got it ready for the purpose of doing NWM this year) but... ergh... :-/. We'll see. I really need to be focusing on school.

And we're nearly at the end of November - I didn't write as much as I had planned this month, so I wouldn't be a winner this year even if I had followed the rules strictly.

Are any Mooters desperately typing in their last three thousand words this weekend? :)

katya
11-29-2008, 03:05 PM
I am. :) I reached the end of the story around 40,000. I filled in some things in the middle of the story, but for the remaining words, I'm just writing a really long epilogue of silly stories. :] I'm at 41.5k or so today.

Earniel
11-29-2008, 03:18 PM
There are still a few loose knots I have yet to tie, but I'm not going to rush these last two days.

I didn't write as much as I hoped in terms of words, but I finished far more than I had planned. Aside from the RPG's, I finished an entire short story, which is far quicker than my usual pace, wrote a draft of another, gave a third story a final edit and worked on a difficult scene in a fourth. Originally I had planned to finish the entire draft of the fourth one this month, but I got distracted by the others. (And I worked on the plot of a fifth unwritten one in my head, but that doesn't count for NaNoWriMo. :p)

It's been a rather exhausting month this way, but pushing yourself is part of the deal of NaNoWriMo.

katya
11-29-2008, 03:33 PM
Yeah. I don't really like the idea of rushing, so I still write at my normal pace, but just a lot more often. Anyway though, it still better to get something out that you can work with later, no matter how imperfect it is now.

I am satisfied with my story now (besides for the tricky scenes that I more or less skipped for now), so I'm not going to extend it unnecessarily, but I am also very competitive and I hate to lose, so I'm going to win one way or another. :)

Are you aware of the NaNoFiMo (http://www.nanofimo.org/) (National Novel Finishing Month)? It runs in December, so you can just carry on from where you left. It's not run by the same company as the NaNoWriMo, though, it's quite a small thing, but they've got a discussion board for people to encourage each other. I'm Wise Queen there as well - still dreaming of finishing that novel from last year ...

It's almost that time again! I am dying for November to get here (but not before I enjoy my beloved October), I had so much fun last year. And I think NaNoWriMo was really great for me as a writer- I learned that I can write longer stories, and that writing really just takes a lot of practice and effort. Anway, I thought I would give people sort of a heads up, if you've never head of NaNo before. I only heard about it a few days in advance last year, and I didn't have any time at all to plan my story out. Most of the preparations start in October, I believe.

Is anyone else planning to give it a go this year? If you are, let me know your username so I can add you as a writing buddy. :D

I think I'll let it pass again this year. I've already finished eight short stories this year, which was enough challenge for me. I only have to finish the last one before November, and then I think I'll leave further writing in 2009 to spurs of the moment.

I'm not sure, but I doubt it. Although I might well sign up again, to be able to post on the forum and be ready if inspiration strikes. I still haven't finished an old one, which I really should.

But I've also thought about how fun it would be to write a fanfiction crossover story about Barufiniel (from Long Lost Leaves) and her youth in Narnia ...

I win! Again! :D And no one else wanted to do it with me :< But my non-mooter friends did so it was fun. :) My story was pretty awesome this year. Awesomely bad but sweet none-the-less. I'm so psyched. I'm going to get Chinese food to celebrate.

Congratulations, katya. :)

Well, I wasn't going to write anything this month, but somehow I managed to write over 10 000 words, spread over four short stories this month, RPG's not included. It's not 50 000 (but I don't think I can even reach 50 000 if I include all my already finished stories) but I'm pretty impressed with myself.

Anyone else who reached some official or self-defined goal?

12-02-2010, 10:39 PM
I was watching your progress, Varnafindë, good to see you reached your goal. :)

I managed to reach 50,000 on November 29th, despite all the obstacles in my path. For example there's a solid week where I didn't write anything, due to lots of parties and stuff and staying out late and whatever. Also Thanksgiving, etc. I was a little nervous at the end! This was the hardest NaNo yet and it was pretty horrible at times. But I ended up with a novel I actually like, more or less, and a pretty nice feeling of accomplishment. :) Looking forward to that TGOI party.

Earniel

Congrats to you both. :)

Didn't get a single letter written, despite plans on finishing two of my unfinished stories. But then it was full weekends, emergency repairs, I got sick, etc... So, yeah, not a letter. But I did get to finish my goal for NaNoArtMo, so it wasn't all bad. I write the whole year around so I guess those stories will get finished in their own time.

I find it really funny to read my last comment on here.

I just hit 50k tonight, though my story is not quite over yet. It was a very difficult year in a way, but easy at the same time. I had next to no problems at all with writer's block, I had a solid story, it went really well, and I have a lot of fleshing out I can do a little later to make this actually a full length novel rather than a novella. On the other hand, I had a severe lack of actual time to write. I have two jobs and am working around 55 hours a week. In my free evenings, I've been obsessively watching Doctor Who with some friends. I've basically had to write in every spare minute I have. So in that sense, I felt like it was a very hard year.

But, looking back at 2010, I remember that it was hard then, too. I think that's what keeps bringing me back to NaNoWriMo is that, quite simply, I forgot how horrible it was and only remember the fun times. Otherwise, I don't think I'd have the courage to do it every year! But now I do remember 2010, all those parties, all that debauchery... It was a really good month for me, but I remember how the words just wouldn't come, how my heart was off on an adventure of its own far from the world in which my story took place, and trying to write with horrible hangovers while trying to manage my social life at the same time.

2011 was the first year that I lost. My life was insane, I didn't even have a laptop to write on, but I managed about 15k in a notebook before giving up about halfway through the month. I was in between homes and sleeping on friends' couches. I was working 45 hours or so at a job that sucked my soul out (as opposed to the ones I have now that revitalize me). My social life was the biggest mess it's ever been, ever. Some of the worst moments of my life occurred in the fall of 2011 (and some of the best). So that was the hardest year, and it kind of takes some of the joy out of victory this year. I won three times, then I lost. I'm hoping sometime in the future to finish 50k PLUS finish my 2011 novel. But I don't know if that's ever going to happen.

Earniel
11-29-2012, 08:47 AM
It's not really losing, if you ask me. You just didn't finish. It's hardly losing since it's not a competition, just a creative project. Congrats on reaching the 50K this year. :) It's a real achievement to be proud of.

I've kind of lost the writing spark lately. I still have ideas but I miss the energy to sit behind the computer and work on words. Too many excuses, and too many RL mishaps (they do sap your creativity, that's for sure). I'm trying to revive it slowly but ah, there are so many things you should rather do. I guess growing up finally caught up with me. But we all need our dreams, and writing will remain one of mine.

katya
11-29-2012, 11:48 AM
I know what you mean. I was feeling the same way for a long time. I think growing up has made it a lot more difficult to write, because I'm always thinking, "That isn't realistic," or "That's a stupid idea." I have a harder time believing in the stories like I used to. But, after two years of pretty much not writing at all, I actually had a lot of fun with NaNo, and fell in love with new characters. I had characters that were alive, and did things that surprised me. That, to me, is the fun of writing. But it's also very hard to do when you're a grown up.

Earniel
11-29-2012, 05:23 PM
Hm, growing older didn't give me too many problems with silly story-ideas. For instance, I still plan to write the one story involving a thousand open fridges on an icy field in the Antartic, and I will just as happily write another story about my wizard and his troublesome sentient vegetables, should a plot present itself.

But I can't get myself holed up in my room all evening anymore like I used to when younger and just spend hours to draw or write. Food's got to get cooked, administration's got to get done, laundy needs folding and the family really likes me to spend the evening downstairs with them. Writing doesn't mesh all that well with all that.

katya

Actually my stories have gotten more silly and crazy as time goes on, so it's not so much that. It's more that the creative spark gets smothered by reality sometimes.

I feel like writing is one of the best ways to spend my free time, and I don't feel bad about that. But I just don't have much free time. It's like... when I was working at my old job (the soul sucking one), I just didn't have any soul left to give to write. My mind was too much bombarded with work and laundry and responsibility. I think you can't write for an hour a day. I think it has to be all day or nothing. By that I mean, when I'm "writing", I spend all day thinking about my characters, imagining plots, etc. When life is taking over too much for that, even if I do have some free time to write, I just don't have anything in there to write. I have a job now that lends itself very well to day dreaming, luckily. :)

This year I haven't even tried writing - and surprisingly, I haven't read the NaNo fora, either. I generally haven't written much lately - something that has made the RPG forum suffer :(

I still can do the day-dreaming in the odd periods when the mind can wonder between tasks. It works miracles too when I need to take my head off work-related things that might otherwise keep me up at night. But I also like the actual writing, the putting words to the scenes in my head, picking the structure of sentences that works best, picking and discarding scenes that won't work. It's getting to that part that is lacking lately.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for your scene in Journeys. ;) But don't fret too much, there at least we can move slowly when needed.

Just thought I'd bump this thread...

I participated in my first NaNo in 2012

I didn't think I'd hit the 50k goal. I ended up with over 68k

And I was asking myself, why the heck did I not do this before. Had a lot of fun with Night of Writing Dangerously and meeting with my fellow Wrimos. (We all now have an inside joke :D)

Already planning the novel I'll write this year

I'm deep in the process of planning out a revision/re-write for last year's novel, myself. This would actually be the first time I'm really making any drastic edits to any novel and I think that's a good sign for me.

Acalewia, we are totally both going to write awesome novels 2013 and we can do it together and do word wars and it's going to be awesome. :)

That's me as well, when writing. I have to have a day to really sink into it. Although I've done plenty of one hour sessions. But that's mostly for editing.

I wouldn't mind getting some more written this year either. I'm mightily pleased I got one short story finished this year already though. It's not much, but considering it's been about two year since that last happened, I'm hoping the dry period is over now.
