Many of the characters in my story start from what i like to call a stem character. This means that they started out as a character (or two) from another story. They of corse have a different names and some different traits. As they develope, the differences between them and the stem character grow and they end up being someone unique.

Do other writers do this?

Is this considered stealing a character?

Responses please!!!!

I certainly hope it's not considered stealing a character, seeing as that's precisely how I got some of my main characters. Mine are by now completely unrecognizable from their 'stems' except for a couple who were based off of uncopyrighted characters from some popular legends and whose names remained the same or similar to the originals.
