wow.We were just talking about this in my psych. class the other day. I find them super duper annoying too, but they repeat things so much becuase kids thrive on repetition. They like things to be the same, and like hate it when things change. So I guess as much as they suck, its alot better for kids to watch than some of the other trash out there. :)

Kids' shows aren't the only genre that suffers from repetitive annoyance. I find most TV today to be completely unwatchable.

I watch TV for about five minutes a week, and that's the weather channel in the mornings. From what I have heard kids' shows today are pretty bad. Back in my day, all the kids' programming was obviously done by people on halucinogens. They just don't make them like that anymore.

Not to sound like a smart ass, I haven't watched any little kids shows in a while. But I know that some really are annoying, especially Dora, when the map sings. For one reason or another, the majority of girls in my sophmore class sing that ceaselessely, and it doesn't end inthe first place.
I have twin little cousins that I have to watch sometimes, and one HATES kid shows. And he's 2! If his brother wants to watch Dora, he kindly asks me to change the channel when he's not looking.

I've never heard of the Dora show or whatever it is before this thread. Unfortunately, now I want to see it just to see how bad it is.
I just thought of a kid show that is *really* bad--it's on some Catholic network (EWTN?), and it features a talking doughnut. The really bad part is, it's obviously a puppet with a hand in it, and it's always positioned on something big, like a rock or trash can, where the puppeteer hides out. It's bad. Check it out.

ooooooh *shudders*
think that a lot of these kiddies programs should be banned i'm surprised they don't freak kids out! :( they certainly freak me out!
Epecially the Telletubbies they are more than freaky! So are the Tweenies and the Hoobs and Barney! argh i could go on but the Telletubbies are by far the worst especially Tinky Winky! *shudders at the thought of him*

Seriously, if I was little I'd have nightmares from it.

Caillou is an incarnation of Satan, I'm serious.
Dora the Explorer, Teletubbies, Barney.... Yikes. I think the only decent little kids show is Sesame Street. Now THAT's a good show. :)

Aih! I just remembered one I saw in Italy. For some reason, it was on the same channel, without commercials, for two days straight. (I came across it while looking for CNN.) It featured a peice of cheese (literally, that's not just what it looked like) with eyes that would run around on a white background and stop to talk to his friends Mushroom and Little Purple Furry Thing. He did this many man times; in fact, I think that only five minutes were recorded and played in loop for 48 hours. The brainwash channel.
This baffled me.

What was the Little Purple Furry Thing? Mold?!? LOL - must be scary for a piece of cheese... (ROFL - Sorry, it's early & I'm just cracking up - MORE COFFEE PLEASE!!!!)
Funny thing about the Teletubbies - my dog loves them. Yes, my dog... He's a year old, and when I leave the house I put on PBS to entertain him... and well, he's become rather fond of Teletubbies (though he likes Sesame Street and Caillou as well...)
I can sort of understand his fascination - a young dog has the focus and attention span of a toddler, which Teletubbies is geared towards. However, the one time I sat and paid attention to it, I pretty much fell into a trance and couldn't look away! Some sort of hypnotic "this is madness!" crept over me and held me powerless on the couch! LOL Now I make sure not to watch - I just turn it on for the dog.
Barney makes me flee the room immediately. Unlike the hypnosis of the Teletubbies, Barney triggers my fight or flight response...

I have two preschoolers, and I really limit their tv viewing time, partly for this reason. My worst (besides the Teletubbies) is Dragon Tales. The voices really get to me.
I do, however, love Thomas the Tank Engine. I like the animation, and the plots are interesting, but not too intense. I swear, some of the stuff they put out for preschoolers I think is made by people with teenagers or something -- the stuff is very inappropriate!
Elvengirl
10-09-2003, 04:19 PM
Hey, I kind of like Dragon Tales. :o :D
Have you heard of The Wiggles? OMG talk about scary! They are four guys who sing songs they made up..... FREAKY!!!!!! I had to watch it while babysitting and then I had them stuck in my head all day. It was traumatizing!
But still teletubbies are worse.
Varda Oiolosseo
10-09-2003, 04:19 PM
Thomas the Tank Engine is an original show that is harmless and has nothing wrong with it for kids. Bob the Builders not too bad either.
It's just the freaky ones that i'm surprised don't disturb them for life. YOu know the other day when i posted about the Telletubbies i hav had a horrible nightmare about them :(

Yep. I used to babysit some neighbor kids. A little boy(3yrs old) and girl(4 yrs). ALL they wanted to do was watch tv. (I wanted to watch tv, too...but we kind-of had different ideas about what shows were watchable:rolleyes: ) Argh! The worst one is Oswald. Maybe, just MAYBE that one is educational....but..oh no! I forgot barney! *shudders* That one so bad! Barney was NEVER educational. It only taught parents how to plop their kids in front of the Tube Almighty instead of taking them hiking or to museums or...well, you get my point. what is this world coming to. *sigh*

Those shows didn't seem so annoying (to me), once I had a baby. You start out with this totally helpless, tiny creature that does not even know how to focus it's eyes, or lift its arms! :) It is such basic, slow going for those first few years! The "annoying" repetition (to us), is actually about the only way more complex, abstract, representational thought can sink into the simple minds of toddlers.
I don't know.....Dora, Teletubbies, Blues Clues, those shows don't bother me too much. The most annoying, for me, are the smarmy, "older kids" shows like..."The Fairly Odd Parents"! EWWWW! That show is banned here! Talk about screeching , purposefully annoying voices! And the content!
"Look Timmy....my butt's in the air, heeheeheehee, I'm stupid...wheeeee!"
Barney does bug me, cause they sing so much cheesey, fakey songs, and the kids are so "staged". The voices thing does get to you though! :D Yes, Dragon tales, and Rugrats. Turning the volumn down works well! :) Still, several hours of Angelica's voice as background noise makes me evil! Fairly Oddparents....BANNED! ;)
Actually, I hate Nickolodeon, and MTV...if it was just me (no hubby or older sister) I would eliminate those channels, oh yeah, Cartoon Network too!.

Hehe...me and my other friends who can't get a boyfriend are "going out" with characters from Dora...I got the map. Lol, we were really hyper at teh time when it happened...:p
A lot of my friends are obsessed with SPONGEBOB. It's ok, and I like it (to a certain degree...), but they never miss it, and I think that's jsut kinda immature and stupid... but whatever, they can do what they want.
The Wiggle's seriously scare me. I watched their Christmas special last year, and they had some dancers in these hot pants type shorts. Well, one of the dancers was A GUY. Now that jsut freaked me out, and it's jsut plain nasty!
But my younger cousin loves all those kid shows, and when I'm baby-sitting her or something, and she watches them, I can see that she really does learn a lot from them. It's kinda funny. She jsut talks back to the TV like they can hear her...it's so cute! :)
Oh, and this thread inspired me to take acton and confront Barney. I e-mailed Barney, and asked for an apology for him pushing me off the swing... I still ahvn't gotten one, but if I don't get one in the next month, I'm sending a letter. :p

Hey, Barney! He hit me as a kid too!
I actually remember this birthday party in pre-school. He showed up in the classroom, and we played games and did a bunch of kiddy dances. We'd hop around for a while and then spin and probably jump up or somethings. Anyway he spun around one time and sent me straight to the floor with his stupid tail.

God bless the Teletubbies. Amy will sit transfixed in frount of that for hours if i let her! I dunno what it is she likes so much could be the colours or it could be the inane talk but *** damn it helps me get some rest (Makes up for any potential warping of her mind ill deal with that later i need sleep)!
Shes a little youung yet to really follow any form of plot so really its brightly coloured and nicely designed she seems intrested but i find a lot of music videos are just as intresting for her to watch!
I quite like watching X-Men Evolution (yes im 20 years old) and she sits quite happily infrount of that (result :D )!
I dont let her watch barney its just too *** for my likeing! She does like a bit of Bob the builder again a very nicely designed program which i think at her age is probably more important to them than acctual content!
As for myself i never was a big fan of educational programs found them boring and predictiable infact from a young age i would allways be much happier infrount of a documenty than an episode of playbus any day (could of murdered that f-ing bird)
I allways thought Seseme street was a bit *** and crap as well! it was just tacky and a bit weird even when i was young i never apreciated old people hanging round with kids that were never theres with some stupid yellow bird!

Ohh, I think the thing now is those caring bears.
Although I do not readily participate in the watching of children shows I babysit the neighbor kids ceaselessly.
I concur with IronParrot,
Most television today is repetitive, the same themes, ideas, etc.
I CAN'T STAND MOST REALITY SERIES. Survivor, Big Brother, Jackass, Punk'd, I hated Tom Green, (MTV the channel is permanently locked out on our TV thanks to moi) Fear factor, Crank Yankers, etc. etc. etc.
I despise most prime time tv series, Raymond, King of Queens. Any of them.
The only T.V. show I watch, on a regular basis, is the Jo Schmo Show. It's a not-so-reality-reality show. Everyone is an actor except for this guy named Matt Gould. All the story lines are made up (except for the unpredictable MATT parts), and everyone is in on it 'cept him.
My opinion.

The content of the programs are decreasing every year, but as I'm sure you have noticed, it's doing the same on the basic cable channels. :)
I guess those who are concerned about it (me) could sell the tv and house, by a log cabin in the Canadian wastelands (anywhere in canada j/k) and live out the rest of life as a hermit, wearing only white clothing and having to hunt for food, dig for water, and suffer through illness.

When MTV first came out, I enjoyed it. All they played was music videos, 24 hours...or whatever amount of time they were on. You just watched it as an extension of listening to your music, to see what artists were doing. Another way (though a bit overly self conscious, but that's another thread) for musicians to express themselves, hopefully for your enjoyment. I don't know what it's supposed to be now, I'm just glad I grew up when the fans were still calling the shots, more or less. ;)
I could have done that Hector, but my husband enjoys tv! Of course he doesn't like regular network shows...does anybody watch that stuff?....but he likes to (make that "tries to" ) relax while watching old movies, shows about Harleys, the Grand Old Opry (which suddenly isn't showing on the now MTV owned CMT anymore! ), stuff about wars, just guy stuff I guess. Well we both enjoy Seinfeld reruns, :D and must watch the news sometimes, so, I couldn't get away with no TV. But if it was just me, I'd put that $50 a month in my savings account and watch it grow!

No kidding! Ours is about $75 dollars a month ( ) because my husband is a boxing fan and we MUST have HBO. And of course you can't just get HBO, in order to get it you must get the stupid "digital package."
My kids are still very young, and I control what they watch. They watch a half hour while I take a shower, etc. in the morning, then a half hour while I cook dinner. It is always a public tv show (like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood) or a video (Veggie Tales or something). When they get older I'll revisit what shows they can watch (I wish they showed the old Spider Man cartoons! My son is interested in Spider Man because a boy at his preschool has a Spider Man backpack.)
I agree Lizra about the Nicktoons and Cartoon Network -- lame animation and inappropriate content on the ones I've seen! I like videos because they end. TV goes on forever! I wish they'd start a "classic cartoon network" with stuff that was on before the whole "gross out" phase started. A lot of the newer ones seem more teen or even adult oriented. And those voices! I never could understand why my mom hated to hear Shaggy talk when we watched Scooby Doo -- I guess I see why now that I am annoyed by the voices on new cartoons!

Hmmmm. This is a very wide discussion topic. I have to agree that Barney, Teletubbies, Dora and a lot of the new throes of childrens shows that have become so popular since parents have begun to both have to work full time jobs are absolutely annoying! The main problem that I have though with a lot of these shows (annoying or not) is what they are teaching our next generation of scientists, engineers, doctors ect....I personally love watching spongebob but there are some things in there that are definitely not appropriate for young children or conducive to their development of respect for their parents or anyone in or not in authority! It is not only tv shows though...."young children's" movies (or what parents think are for young children) are often shocking! (even to me at almost 19 yrs old!). One movie comes to mind: Shrek. I think that my nephew was bought that movie when he was two. Not only does it have profanity, also some adult references (or what i took to be adult references) and disrespectful rude dialogue. Where will it end? What is too much? I am glad I don't have any children and don't have to decide that. AHHHHH!!!! :)

Hey I like Shrek, :D ;) but I agree it has a lot of adult humor. A lot of it I'm sure little kids wouldn't even understand, they just like the talking donkey or something :) I have I watched old cartoons movie that I used to love when I was little, and now I'll understand the full meaning of the humor, whereas before, it just went over my head.
But why expose that to kids? I think children watch waaay to much tv these days. They just sit in front of the tube for hours when they should be building forts, climbing trees, creating things. TV. takes beings from being cause and puts them at effect. It's sad to see, really. :(
