i heard a rumour that Peter Jackson was giong to kill off Legolas in the ROTK. he killed Haldir in ttt so what is giong to stop him from killing off Legolas as well? i heard its a rumor but if it's something more then that i don't want to be around when he dies. i will just have to keep on using my wishful thinking technique so far it has worked.!

I'm betting that evil PJ is gonna deep-six...Frodo Baggins!!! Wouldn't it be just like Jackson to kill off another key character like he did Boromir and Haldir?!?!?! So don't be too surprised if Frodo dies during ROTK!

Yes, the last thing we see in the trailer is Sam screaming Nooooooooooo!!!!!! because Frodo fell into the Crack of Doom. Gollum pushed him, of course, right after Sauron took the Ring. I think Legalos will die because an oliphant spears him as he tries his bleeping Tarzan stunt.

anamerial
10-02-2003, 05:06 PM
he would kill him because the part in the book where he goes with gimli sailing never to return would take longer to show and thus would make the movie longer. *sigh* i just think that this is a rumor though i am not sure whether or not it will happen but i pray that it won't that would just end my world as i know it.

also thanks for the friendly welcomes. they are appreciated.
well namarieh

I'm scared about RotK. i was really frustratedwith the preview. i saw some more frodo looking to the side slowly....elrond giving aragorn some sword( )...more red faced gandalf with white hair that has extreme contrast with his face...and finnally sam yelling "nooooooooo!" as if frodo fell in. need some support here.

Kill Frodo? No way, he wouldn't live to reach fifty! But killing Boromir - now that was imperative. If he hadn't killed off Boromir nobody would have bothered going to see the secong film.

You idiot, Boromir died in the books, there was no other choice but to kill him in the movie. And I think the killing of Haldir is to bring everybody home on the fact that: this is a war - people are going to die, and those people are not necessarily going to be the ones nobody cares about.

But then there are the percentage of the audience that do not like Legolas; and it was remarked by the producers that they would stay true to the books because trying to please a movie audience is a trap. So either way Legolas is staying alive, I guess (I guess duh, too).

Um, BB was being sarcastic, making fun of the way we dislike the killing of Haldir. He agrees with you on every point, and he knows Boromir died in the books and that there's no chance of killing Frodo.

You're probably right, Elenna Alaniel. I heard Peter Jackson might be waivering on his decision to kill off Legolas so he could make a blockbuster sequel staring Bloom and JRD. It will likely be one of those stupid Hollywood buddy movies. I understand that Gimli will only be used for comic relief.

And I heard they were going to cut out the scouring of the Shire, because supposedly RotK is 4 hours long without it. And if you watch the giftgiving in Lothlórien [in the Extended Edition] Sam doesn't get any dirt or a mallorn seed - instead he gets Elven rope made of Hithlain.

Now PJ wouldn't stray that far from the text surely. You can't kill
off a key charecter THAT easily.:)

Agalayth
10-06-2003, 09:59 PM
I think that PJ will kill off Frodo because in The Two Towers, Galadriel said something that wasn't said in the book that she wasn't in: "The quest will claim his life. You know this." So I think that was a clue that PJ is going to ruin the movie and thus creating a war between the Tolkienists and New Line Cinemas.

Elf Girl
10-07-2003, 06:39 AM
*laughs* He can't. It would be one depressing movie if it didn't have a happy ending.

smaug_the_magnificent
10-07-2003, 07:38 AM
Apologies if you're being sarcastic Elf Girl, I mean let's face it, the tone of one's writing can be rather difficult to tell..

Anyway, I wouldn't go so far as to say film 3 will be "depressing" but I'm fairly confident it'll have a sad ending, as we know it is in the book.. Those who haven't shed a tear upon finishing the Lord of the Rings' book must be few & far between!

We know the Grey Havens is in the film and we know it's a highly emotional scene, and coupled with the journey we've all undertaken the past few years or so with the movie trilogy, there will be a sense of melancholy (that will hit most poignantly) at this moment, when we see the ship (& all our favourite characters) fading away into the West..

Another pssibility is combining Legalos & Gimli's departure with that of the first departure of Gandalf, Frodo, Bilbo et al.. Gimli's awe of the Glittering Caves & Legalos' like minded affinity with Fangorn wasn't explored in PJ's production so there's not necessarily a need for them to "hang around" in ME for a few more years as it is in the books.. This will also provide a neat little closure for two prominent characters & add to the cinematic effect at the Grey Havens ... (of course this is just pure speculation)

In terms of Galadriel's epiphany that "the quest will claim his (Frodo's) life", yes, it does cloud the water a little, most acutely for those who are exclusive movie fans.. Those who have read the books should understand though that Frodo taking the ship to Valinor is essentially the "Death" of Frodo, the corporeal cessation, the departure of the body of Frodo from the earth, from the mortal realm.. In essence the quest does claim his life, he cannot continue to abode in ME, principally because of the wounds he's sustained from the quest - so that prophecy is correct, however there might be some confusion with moviegoers who find it difficult to make a connection between Frodo sailing off on a ship, and his actual death.. This is something the writers will have to extrapolate succinctly (in, I'd imagine, a fairly short space of time)

Valandil
10-07-2003, 12:40 PM
Perhaps Galadriel's statement will make movie-goers who haven't read the books think that Shelob actually kills Frodo (in addition to the comments just made about his sailing west). It's something we tend to think on our first read of the book - but otherwise, those in a theater may not think he's dead (esp having already seen Gandalf return).

???

Agalayth:

smaug is quite right. The quest did claim Frodo's life in a very real way. The end is a sacrifice; Frodo says to Samwise "Sometimes someone must give up something they love so that others can continue to love it."

BB:

As for that prophesy, I always thought the hobbit (who is not a "man" slicing his tendons from behind and distracting him so the woman could kill him was the meaning of that.
