Go to TheOneRing.net now to pick up your copy! Not the official release yet, so it's not perfect quality... on the other hand, I'm still downloading mine (really slowly) so I haven't seen it yet... but I'll post thoughts when I do!

Initial thoughts:

Well, first of all, I really do have to see a much bigger version of this. There's so much going on, and it just isn't right to see it in so small a frame.

- This trailer definitely features Merry and Pippin more than any that we saw for the first two films. Hopefully this carries over to the film. We do see a shot of Gandalf riding away with Pippin, as well as Merry and Pippin parting just before.

- We see nothing of the confrontation at Isengard... yet.

- The look of the Mordor orcs is appropriately much grimier than the Uruk-hai. Very Mordor-ish.

- As I suspected, the inclusion of Osgiliath in TTT was indeed a way to lead into Faramir's flight back to Minas Tirith (as opposed to having it be a "background event" as in the book).

- More Eowyn is a good thing.

- Minas Tirith looks great. In one shot, they all ride out of Minas Tirith with Aragorn in the lead with the White Tree on his armour - this looks very much like it is after the defence of Gondor, and on the way to the Morannon.

- Eomer leads the Rohirrhim in the charge! Woohoo!

- The catapult siege looks beautiful. I can't make out if the projectiles they are using are actually human heads (not that they'd show this in a trailer, of course) as is the case in the book, though.

- Shelob's lair looks really creepy. Already makes the Aragog scene in The Chamber of Secrets look like child's play (and that was a good scene).

- Aragorn waving a torch and Legolas in the background, in what seems like the Paths of the Dead...

- Gandalf appears to be facing a mounted Nazgul on the walls of Minas Tirith rather than at the gates... I hope they don't shaft the gates, though - that's one of the great climaxes of the events in Book V.

wow! wow! wooooow!!!
I really love the trailer. Great. Does PJ direct the trailers himself? I doubt it. All the trilogy trailers have been far better than the movies... a pity :p

Sween: not here, please. TOR.N have retired it, you know :p

Actually, he's directly involved in editing the trailers, and directing which effects shots are to be rushed in post-production in order to meet trailer release deadlines. And besides, all of those shots were directed by him (or his ADs) in the first place, no? :)

I just noticed something interesting after my umpteenth viewing of the trailer.

It begins with the ring in the palm of Frodo's hand....then I realised IT'S NOT FRODO'S HAND!!!!! :)

Whoa!

As a matter of fact, the hand might be Smeagol or Deagol's! Think about it... look at the shot carefully... looks like we're getting a flashback on Gollum's past!

If anyone is looking for the trailer it is now being traded on Kazaa. There are many fakes, the real one is 30,390KB.

On behalf of LOTR movie fans everywhere, I would like to personally thank the guy who sacrificed his job to share the wonderful ROTK trailer with us yesterday.

Yes, it messed up New Line's plans but the end of July was a PERFECT time for us to get a new LOTR fix. By September when the trailer is officially released, we'll already have our TTT DVD with the 10 minute behind-the-scenes look at ROTK. We needed something right NOW. Thanks to this brave (but sadly, not very wise) soul, we have been given a breathtaking mid-summer present.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Hey buddy, if you need a job reference as you start pounding the pavement, let us know.

I'm not sure what Gimli's post means, but the trailer is most certainly being shared on Kazaa, I just searched for it and it came up with multiple users. As I said on the previous page it is the file that is 30,390kbs in length, and the file description reads:

"this is the one advertised on the empire forums and it is definitely real"

Things cannot be "removed or pulled" from Kazaa by anyone.

Did it look good? What did it look like? Someone please tell me what it looked likeIt looked wonderful and we were treated to a nice little exchange between Pippin and Gandalf. The young hobbit asks if there was still hope for Frodo and Sam. Gandalf replies "there never really was much hope...just a fool's hope." It was a priceless little moment. :)

Mark my words, in December we be treated to the greatest film we will see in our lifetime.

A recent quote from Peter Jackson
The Return of the King will be the best of the three films, and my personal favourite.

It is the movie that I want to be most proud of, so I am working very hard to make sure that happens.

I think when people look back at the three films, I want Return of the King to be the one that really lingers with them in terms of the emotional experience.

I want it to be the reason why we made the other two films.I am counting the days!!!! :) :) :) :) :)

I'm sure it will be the best of the three. So much will happen! and when you look at those screen caps the flaming projectiles do indeed look like human heads!

not to mention the Shelob scene will give me infinite gloating abilities over my sister and her puny Aragog! Mwahahaha...

There is one concern I have, which I've pointed out already, though it may turn out to be unsubstantiated.

That being, I really do hope that last shot, the encounter between Gandalf and the mounted Nazgul, is not in any way replacing the confrontation with the Witch-King at the fallen Gate. It might be, see, because they seem to be promoting that pretty heavily (not just in this trailer but in a lot of the promotional material for the video game adaptation as well).

It's not a big deal to me, it's just that Gandalf standing alone before the Nazgul at the Gate is one of my favourite mental images of the entire story. But we'll see what happens...

Dreran the Green
08-05-2003, 09:36 AM
I was worried about that too, but when you look at the screen caps for those last few shots, It doesn't look like Gandalf. I think someone in the other thread with this link said that the rider is Dernhelm with Merry. Hopefully they're right, and we were just fooled by the white horse...

Black Breathalizer

I found myself worrying about these types of things in the first two movies but I've learned to trust PJ's instincts. He has proven that he will find the appropriate drama in every scene. Even if it turns out to be not exactly as I'd pictured it, it will be well done.

IronParrot
08-05-2003, 02:50 PM
Well I don't doubt that it will be a well-done scene. By now, I'm well aware of the Jackson-Lesnie partnership's solid handling of extravagantly dramatic visuals. But these shots are definitely game for discussion, at the very least on a trivial level.

Black Breathalizer
08-05-2003, 03:32 PM
IronParrot, I love that scene too. In my opinion, it is too visually dramatic for PJ to pass up unless there is a very specific script reason why he needs to play the scene differently. My guess is that you don't need to worry and it will be included. The screenwriters would have to have a compelling reason to eliminate such a potentially powerful visual from the film.

squinteyedsoutherner
08-05-2003, 10:42 PM
Dreran, the rider with Merry in the last scene of the trailer has what appears to be Gandalf's staff in hand, I don't see how that rider could not be Gandalf unless something rather odd has been changed.

Dreran the Green
