I don't know. I've been wondering that myself. And also, what was Sirius's job? He also apparently had made a lot of money... he bought Harry that firebolt. I wonder if they all did the same thing?

I'm geussing James was an auror maybe Sirius too. But I don't even have mild geuss as to what Lily was.

James and Lily could both have been Aurors, but I get the feeling that James inherited his money from his parents.

My mother asked JKR in a virtual interview where the Potters got their gold. JKR said it will be revealed in later books.
I'm pretty sure they inherited it from Voldemort.
EDIT: So I don't think either of them worked.

Just wondering, how did your mother get into an virtual interview with J.K. Rowling?

It was one of those things where anyone who feels like it can send in a question, and people on the site hosting the interview pick the best ones.

Oh, right. Okay.
In book five Sirius said he got money from one of his uncles, but it probably wasn't enough to buy a Firebolt...

If I'm correct, I think they worked for the Order.

yah, but we know they worked for the order, what the question was is what was their real jobs. Like Mr. Weasly, he works for the order and for the Ministry of Magic

Why not? The Blacks are a very old, rich pureblood family, yes?

I thought they didn't like him though...
Maybe it was the uncle that was burned off the family tree.

sirius said that the uncle who gave him the money had burned of the list, and the reason was probably because he gave sirius the money

In an interview (maybe this is the one you guys are talking about?) Rowling said that the Potters' jobs would be important in later books, but she didn't give any hint of what they did.
I think she also said that James inherited his money. So whatever they did, money wasn't an issue.
I'd be surprised if they were Aurors... there's been so much talk of Aurors already; wouldn't it be mentioned that the Potters were Aurors?
