The family of Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien is furious that a London musical based on the books is being staged. Son Christopher Tolkien also is said to be deeply unhappy that his father's masterpiece has been adapted into an acclaimed film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. And now the three-hour musical is enraged him even further. A pal says, "He's catatonic over the success of the film and thinks all popular entertainment is unutterably low."

Then he should have been mad at his father for selling the rights for £10,000 :/

Christopher doesn't seem to mind living like a leech writing mindless books about his father's creation. Chris should be happy that he had a brilliant and subsequently famous father. Without his father no one whould care what he thought about anything.

good for him. i hate the idea of a musical and now that im rereading the books i am able to wait for ROTK. persoanlly i think they are good movies but they dont stick to the books but the idea of a musical is ridiculous. it humiliates the books

Hmm. I wonder just how close this "pal" is to him. Last I checked, Christopher was pretty close-mouthed about the movies, and I don't reckon that would change anytime soon.

How is the idea of a musical ridiculous? How does it "humiliate" the books. There are over 100 pages of lyrics in LotR alone and the idea of music in Tolkien's world pervades much of the Simarillion. Tolkien seemed more than a bit interested in music as it relates to his creation. Perhaps the production team of the musical won't have the hubris of Peter Jackson and think they can write a better story than Tolkien did. After seeing the Two Towers I am still waiting for a movie based on the work of JRR Tolkien. You attack a project as ridiculous and humiliating before you have read a single word of the script or watched a single scene.

i think of the characters dancing and singing is stupid. if you could provide some pictures you have seen i will gladly look at them

Who said any characters were going to dance? Les Miserbles is a great musical and no one danced...As you reread the books as you said you are doing why not note how many times lyrics appear...well someone has to be singing them...Of course you may have a better idea of what middle earth should look and sound like than Tolkien did.

gimli, I will cut you some slack as you admit you are canadian...I am still curious about your reference to pics...Pics of what...I was going to write out a list of the great contributions of canada to culture and classic literature but someone in my office ran out of post-it notes and asked to borrow mine.

Just becasue he's Canadian what does that have to do with anything?

I think the muical is a great idea. I can see why Chris Tolkien is mad about it, but he has probably not read the script or seen anything yet either (but I am just guessing about that, I am not sure). I think the musical will be good, because all of the fantastic songs/poems that Tolkien wrote will be incorporated into it, unlike the movies.

Ok you told him you'd cut him slack because hes canadian. Not only is that stupid and not funny, it has nothing to do with what he said in his previous post.

It had something to do with his sig. He insulted hama, and hama replied with a joke that would be insulting if not taken the right way. The point is, gimli7410 was a little rude, hama replied with a joke, and if you didn't think it was funny...oh well. I caught the humor in it. >shrug< :)

Galvenar, thank you...at least someone here shares my sense of humor...to all others, yes I was a bit insulted to have someone say that the idea of a musical was ridiculous and "humiliates" the books without backing that statement up. I spent two years writing a musical based on LotR. I may just be a god damn american but I think and have always thought LotR was a musical. Someone just had to adapt it to the stage... BTW...does anyone know if the last great canadian theater empresario, Garth Drabinsky is out of jail yet?

Gimli, stop being such a dolt. You insulted Hama's life-work, and all he did was make a light-hearted joke with regards to the FAR TOO BIG font in your sig. If it were me, I would have been far less lenient.

Edited to make more sense. LOL. :D

Now, I've had some crazy ideas before (very crazy), so y'all just tell me if this is one of them... I think that at this point a group hug/apology/whatever you want to call it is in order, just to make sure folks have calmed down and people know where everyone else is coming from. Tell me if that sounds too far fetched. :)
