Disclaimer: Okay, this has probably been done before, but I *did* try looking. Close/merge if needed. :)
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes. Inspired by the dead person thread, if you could somehow touch base with Tolkien - seance, raising his corpse, etc, etc, what ONE question would you ask him? And I DO mean ONE question!! *Frowns in the general direction of Earniel* ;) And can we please try and keep away from the Balrog....? :p
Hmm, good question -
How about "could you please give me some advice on living?" He seemed like a pretty cool guy. Not a Middle Earth question, but hey....I'm in a philosophical mood....
As for a ME question, well, gotta think on that one....
Lizra

I'd ask him why he let Melkor stink up the music so much! :p
Gwaimir Windgem
05-28-2003, 12:03 AM
Can I come and live at your place? :D
Or you can come to my place. I'll sleep in the living room, and you can have my room. I'll spruce it up for you.
PLEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!!!!
Oh I know, how about "could you please tell me a story?"
Gwaimir Windgem
05-28-2003, 12:19 AM
oooo...that's good. But I'm sticking with mine.
Yup, I'm pathetic. ;)
How about "You're dead!!! What are you doing here??" ;)
Lizra
05-28-2003, 12:21 AM
You are pathetic lately! Come on boy! Quit groveling! ;)
Gwaimir Windgem
05-28-2003, 12:57 AM
Come on girl! Start groveling! ;) We're talking about TOLKIEN! My HERO!
Hmm...well, I suppose my original question wouldn't work... :( It'd probably be a religious question, nothing interesting to many of you. :p
I suppose I might ask him:
1) for a long and lengthy exposition on his mythical views.
2) about his view of Ephesians 2: 8-9 in regards to Justification.
3) Is Eru God? :p
4) Do Elves have pointed ears? :p
6) Do Balrogs have....um...never mind....;)
7) If Gandalf was in any way related to the Witnesses of Revelation.
8) Advice on living, like Rian said.
9) If he could tell me a story, like Rian said. (me=copycat :rolleyes)
10) What does it all mean?
11) What's it like up there?
12) -faints from sheer delight-
Lizra, I could answer that question for you. :p
Lizra
05-28-2003, 01:02 AM
No, no...I want Tolkien's answer! :p Thanks anyway!

The Entmoot Gang? What's this?
Gwaimir Windgem
05-28-2003, 01:09 AM
My guess is Lin, Lai, and Jon.

Nah, I haven't asked Jon get because that would be unfair. He has to be fair in the Mud Wrestling Competitions. Being in a gang with us would show the others that he has got preferences.

I didn't say that. But usually you don't know who is in the gang. You just fear the gang. :D
No, seriously. Ruinel and Baby-K caused that idea and I thought I put it into my sig because my avatar isn't very individual anymore. ;)

Now WHAT part of ONE question did you not understand, yankee-doodle?
Anyway, I'd ask him to highlight which particular parts of his mythos' was he leaning towards, ie orks from men, or elves, and how myths transformed fits in with everything. :p
Edited to fix two typos. What can I say? My fingers are cold. :(

I'd go with Rian's "Can you tell me a story?" :D

Why do Hobbits have such big hairy feet?
Arien the Maia

I wouls ask him if Men and Elves are truely seen as equals in Eru's eyes.
Arien the Maia

ok I coudn't resist! I have to ask another:D
I would ask what really happens to men when they die?

I would ask him about his time in WWI.

Was there a piece of music that inspired the creation, and if so, can I please hear it?
I could read the books to get his stories, but knowing the music would make me happy. Mmm...music.

I would ask him to tell me stories about what happened to Gandalf before, after, and inbetween The Hobbit and LOTR, including the weird things he must've seen when he died after that whole balrog thing.
That, or "Why haven't you haunted Peter Jackson's nightmares yet??";)

Yeah, we'd have to ask about Eru's gender. So as to stop the debates between you and I, Gwaimir. :p Eru is NOT male!

Hobbits are Men; just short, fat, and fuzzy-footed. ;)
Well, people, he always refers to Eru as He. :p If He were asexual (or omnisexual) he would refer to Him as It, or Heshe, or something. :p

What's with the Ragnarok-type battle at the end of Middle-earth history and what is the fate of elves, men, dwarves, hobbits, ents, after it? Does Feanor finally stop sulking during or after the battle?
How about Glorfindel's tale?

Falagar

Of course, but I only get one question. ;)
I could have asked for a complete set of grammatical rules for Quenya and Sindarin, but it'd probably take some time and he'd cross things over, forget them, then make up new forms and endings, and then have to change the whole language...over and over again...would take centuries.

Yes, I guess you're right. Unfortunately there are some things we're never meant to know. :(

There are really 2 things I would like to know and since BoP loves me so much I am gonna ask them both :p
1) What happened to Men in the 4th age after King Elessar died and his son Eldarion took the thrown, renewing the bloodline once again?
I am most interested in the above question with the Fate of the Kings of Men and men themselves, but I've also always wondered:
2) What happened in the Far-East of Middle Earth, beyond the land of Mordor, it seems as though we only know about a small portion of Arda and certain areas are long forgotten and cannot be found, surely there was life there and what happened there with it's people, the lost races of Men, Elves and Dwarves, the 2 Blue Wizards, etc...?
About the only thing I know about the Far-Eastern part of the world is the that the first Elves and the first Men awoke there...Oh and we know that Aragorn travelled there, but there is no report of those travellings :(

I fully admit, i could not ask only one question!!! :o
- Why didn't you write more stories that took place in Numenor?
- Why didn't you tell us more about Numenorean women?
- Are "the Faithful" meant to be a metaphor for Christians?
And last but not least,
- Why didn't you finish Adunaic?!?!? :( :(

I fully admit, i could not ask only one question!!! :o
Nor could I!
One of the questions I would ask, would be, "What would have been different if Fëanor had been willing to break open his Silmarils for Yavanna to rekindle the Trees?"
The whole history of Middle-earth would have been very different, but in what way?

I cannot comment on Fred your cat (but since your comparing him to orcs, I can only imagine a semi-demonic crazed kitty with a penchant for blood-letting ) but, as far as the origins of orcs go...
I read somewhere (likely the Silmarilion) that Melkor captured some elves, took them to Utumno, tortured them, broke them and made them into Orcs! This is sometimes referred to as Melkor's greatest blasphemy. A quick Google search on "Melkor's greatest blasphemy" will give the details.
If you asked Prof Tolkien about this it would be a very disturbing and horrific conversation. It represents one of the most evil acts in the book. I think it would be a great question if you could stomach the response.

Why did you spend so much time working and taking chairs in universities instead of staying home writting? ... we wanted more! Much more! Guys like you should live twice as long as the rest of us!
