The Mouth of Sauron. I just love that scene where he shows everyone Frodo's clothes and they all look terrified and then Gandalf insults him.

Yes the Mouth of Sauron was very cool, although he did have a small part. I hope there are many songs about him. *puts on Nightfall in ME*

But I like Grima also. I can't stand Saruman, and Grima is more foolish *recalls Obi Wan's words*, but he is cool in the end and then i feel sorry for him. So he gets my sympathy vote.

Gollum's inner struggles, the possibility of his redemption, his simple delight in fish, the backstory of his corruption, all of these easily make him one of my favorite characters, period, not just in LotR.

If we're not limited to choosing only from The Lord of the Rings books, then a favorite bad "guy" of mine is Glaurung the Dragon. He was a mocking and derisive big nasty. He taunts Turin . . .
Evil have been all thy ways, son of Hurin. Thankless fosterling, outlaw, slayer of thy friend, thief of love, usurper of Nargothrond, captain foolhardy, and deserter of thy kin. As thralls thy mother and thy sister live in Dor-loomin, in misery and want. Thou art arrayed as a prince, but they go in rags; and for thee they yearn, but thou carest not for that. Glad may thy father be to learn that he hath such a son; as learn he shall. He pushes all the buttons to make Turin seem like dirt.
Glaurung sacks Nargothrond, casts a spell on Turin (the walking disaster) and lets him go, then he throws all the orcs out of Nargothrond so that he can keep the treasure for himself, casts a forgetting spell on Nienor but lifts it so that Nienor realises that she is married to and pregnant by her own brother.

If the bad guy has to be from LOTR, then I would go with the Mouth of Sauron. He was described like he was supposed to be scary but his interaction with Gandalf turned him into a buffoon.

Mine would have to be Gollum of course. I have a feeling that he would have redeemed himself if he'd had the chance. Poor guy. :(

My favorite bad guy in the LotR was Gollum. He was so focused on his goal, albeit a simple one. And nothing could sway him from it.

Of course, Sauron is the bad guy of the book. But if you look past him, you see all these other people with their own personal agendas.

I have two favorites- one is the villain I love to hate, and the other is the just an awesome adversary... Rotten to the core.... Durins Bane... flame of Udûn... the Balrog of Morgoth... bwaaaaaaa! :D

The villain I love to hate is Saruman because he's a traitor. You can't get lower than one whose been trusted but has absolutely turned because of his own arrogance. Grima is a close second. He's low and slimey but he's a bit more pitable because he's just being used. Boo, hssss! :mad:

I can't really call Gollum bad. Okay, he was far from good too but bad's too much. I think that's mainly the Ring's influence on him.

My favorite bad guy is Saruman. His pursuasive voice and his backstabbing habits make him a villian that you would indeed love to hate.

My favorite bad guy/girl is Shelob!!! She's just cool because she eats people and has webs and stuff. Her death made me sad, sniff. I also like Gollum a lot, but I don't really consider him a bad guy.

But I also have a soft spot for Old Man Willow - a different kind of bad, more natural and wild - more spiteful and jealous than truely evil (though I guess imprisoning people until they die of hunger or thirst ain't too nice either).:eek:

Mine would have to be the Dark Riders..... They are so mysterious and they were depicted brillinatly in the movies....i have to say

Theres just somthing about the costume and horses and the whole cloacked thing its just so mysterious....

sauron, of course! it always seems to me that the "bad guys" are noticably more interesting than the "good guys". they have a flair to their personality that is very likable.

Saruman's my favourite bad guy in LotR. He's like Gandalf, but evil :D. I like him because he tries to benefit from the fact that Sauron's on the way to taking over the world. That's not so stupid when you think about it.
I never liked Sauron in LotR but he was a great villain in Akallabêth, i.e. the downfall of Númenor.
GrÃ*ma was not a pleasant guy in the books, but I really liked how he was described in the film. So in the LotR films, I almost think he's my favourite bad guy :D

Since this thread is in the LotR book forum, I would have to stick to bad guys in LotR. Too bad. But I would have to say that I thought Gollum was a great bad guy. At first, you didn't like him. Then, you pittied him, like Frodo. And then, you despised him. He was so complex a character, not just black and white, not just good or evil.

Then, of course Saruman, the maia sent to ME to help bring down the evil that lurked there and corrupted, and was corrupted himself. And when he was defeated, and he was given pitty by his conquerers, he gave one last stab at the heart of his enemies. Truely evil, and truely despicable.

Don't you see that in LotR too, but? For me, I first disliked him, then pitied him (Poor Smeagol) and then disliked him again, and then pitied him again. (The Ring's power over him). He was a good bad character too.

I don't think he's truly evil as such. He was ok in the beginning, wasn't he? But he is still my favourite bad guy- the way he keeps his enemies constantly in doubt (with his voice) about their own position towards him, his lust for power and his 'evilness' to the end (Scouring of the Shire)...great! :)

My favorite bad guy is Gollum. I laugh whenever he says "My pressssssiousssss." or "Gollum". He is my fav charater on the Hobbit. (Besides Bilbo and Bombur):D:D:D

I think that my favorite would have to be the Black Riders: they give me a chill, and they're responsible for the one cool female character (Eowyn) doing her heroic act. :D
My other favorite is the mountain Carhadras (sp?) because it defeats the Fellowship - who can survive Moria, if just barely, and walk the Paths of the Dead, and lead a hopless charge out of Helm's Deep- without even trying.

I also like Smaug, although he's not really LOTR...

Gollum makes me cry and my skin crawl, and Grima makes me want to wash my hands, take a bath, and brush my teeth.

I don't consider Gollum a bad guy. First, he was just a victim (but then you can say that so were the Ringwraiths) and he also saved the day at the end... :)

Saruman was also cool.

my favorite bad guy would have to b sarumon or sharky as i like to call him. because he took over Theoden decieved the whole wizard councel, all his friends, and then tried to even become stronger than sauron but in the end gets shut down by HOBBITS!!! very comical

I liek Gullom, the best. His inner turmoil (if it can really be called that) is interesting to read about and gives his character more depth (or so I think), becasue he has a kind of split personality.
